FroYo A2SD question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running OpenDesire 1.6a and wondered something.
I've been getting a number of "Do you want to scan for errors" messages when connecting via USB and enabling USB storage mode to xferfiles over and 99% of the time no errors are found.
This is on 2 different memcards.
I am waiting until write ops have completed before turning off USB storage mode and returning to the phone.
I think it might be the EXT partition interferring with the card and causing Windows to think the card may have errors?
I'm wondering, if I reset factory defaults then, in SpareParts enable the external storage so all apps I install go into the SD card folder .android_secure will this mean that if I factory reset next time round or need to wipe if I want to try another FroYo ROM that my installed apps will remain as is and I won't need to reinstall them because FroYo will see the contents in this folder?
This seems like a safer way of doing things perhaps?

[Q] Epic 4g Microsdhc issue and One Click Root & Recovery v2.5.5

Hi,
Please forgive me if this is a noob question. I recently developed an issue transferring files to the sd card. Using the usb storage method, after transfering 2 or 3 mp3s, the phone would shut off and reboot for no reason (This caused the Zeam launcher to crash apparently? for at least 15 tries)
I tried using the SD adapter, the transfer rate is extremely slow or to no transfer at all and causes windows explorer to crash or hang (tried at least 15x).
I figured my sd card was corrupted so I tried formatting the card. If I used the SD adapter, it would say the card is write-protected even though clearly, the locked was off. I even tried another SD-adapter to no avail.
Finally, using USB storage, I was able to format the SD card.
Since I mentioned earlier that the Zeam launcher crashed, (yes, I selected always use "zeam launcher" even after it crashed causing the error message to loop) I resetted the phone with the wipe data/factory rest option in clockworkmod (I'm using ViperRom 3.03).
I wasn't sure if the 1 click root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388) installed any folders into the sd card so I ran the 1 click root in windows just to make sure. After rebooting from the 1 click root, all the files that were previously formatted were back.
I guess I didn't read too clearly but
my questions is
1) how am I able to disable that backup function? I had a bunch of files (which I have no idea what they did) from when i first started playing with the phone and I want to start off fresh with just the files I need.
2) anyone have any idea why the sd card was unable to accept files through the SD adapter or USB storage method?
3) what to do when the launcher crashes (this happened to me 2x already where I lost all my data)
Thanks to anyone who can help. This will help me close some gaps in my limited Android/Epic 4g knowledge.
definitely something is weird. Using usb storage, I ran the scandisk to fix errors and some errors were found. I formatted to ntfs just for kicks and the sd card read blank and in properties the drive had nothing in use. I turned off usb storage, turned it back on and voila, all the files that weren't there are now back. It this a sign of a corrupted sd card or am I going crazy?
Which files/folders are you referring to? Because as soon as your phone mounts your sd card, it will write about 4 folders (I think) if they are not already there...
.android_secure
Android
DCIM
LOST.DIR
if I recall correctly. The other thing you can do is use your phone to format your card instead of doing it on a computer... go to 'Settings->SD card and phone storage->Unmount SD card' then after it is unmounted, use the 'Format SD card' option. If this doesn't work, then you may need a new sd card/phone.

[Q] Installing new SD card

I am going to replace the tiny SD card on the DInc in order to avoid the "not enough space..." messages that appeared on the recent update and to put more stuff on it. Do I need to do anything special to switch them out? Back-up and format are the only things I can think of.
if you're talking about the "low on memory" warning that relates to the space available to install apps, I don't think replacing the SD card will fix that. There are some ROMs in the Dev section you can try, if you're rooted, that have that solved.
But as for setting up the new card, you can either make a backup of the original, or just copy the contents to your computer then move them to the new card. Check that the format is FAT32, as well. It's pretty painless.

+1 the NAG is from the phone being to full you can start to clean some of it out though. SDmaid and 1 click cache are both good apps to have to do some "spring cleaning"

Samsung Galaxy S i9000 internal sd card not working and touchscreen not responding

Hi. I have a Samsung galaxy S i9000 running a Jellybean 4.1 custom ROM. androidadvices. com/ update-galaxy-gt-i9000-stable-jellybean-411-firmware/#.UDJOV91mT9d
Everything's working fine until today when my laptop (Win7 OS) froze up while I was formatting the internal sd card of my phone.I restarted the laptop and phone and the internal sd card cannot be detected by either device anymore.
I tried to format the sd card multiple times to no avail. I tried to flash stock GB ROM. ODIN can detect the phone but cannot complete the process. It fails on "Setting Up Connection".
Up to the above process I was able to use my phone (it turns itself on, just can't use internal sd card). However, I made a stupid mistake of doing factory reset, cache wipe, and dalvik cache to reflash the JB ROM in hopes that it will fix it. Now, my phone is stuck on the Welcome screen (one with Choose Language and Start to setup) but the touchscreen isn't working so I can't select Start. The buttons on either side of the center button works, though. Only the touchscreen function is not working.
Now obviously, USB Debugging is not set up on my phone so I can't do a lot. My first question is: Is there a way to setup USB Debugging using ADB or from Recovery?
Additional info:
Recovery and Download mode are both working, although like I mentioned above, I cant reflash stock ROM because of no usb debugging and it fails in Odin. File Manager can be accessed from Recovery but it has no internal sd card directory. External sd card is ok, though, as well as the system files. But cannot install from internal sd card (obviously), cannot format sdcard, or do anything that has something to do with sdcard. It gives an error "E:\ can't mount sdcard"
When I connect the phone to the computer via USB, the phone "knows" that it is connected because the notification beep sounds and on Computer, it shows a new drive name (F but it says "Please Insert a disk into Removable Disk F.", which I believe, means it can detect it but cannot mount the storage.
I can also use adb.
So my questions are:
-How do I get the touchscreen functionality back?
-How can I enable my internal sd card to be mounted on the phone again?
-(same as above) How do I enable USB Debugging from adb or recovery?
I know I have a lot of issues on my phone but I would really appreciate it if you can help me. Thank you.
Did you find a solution?

[Q] Internal Storage lost after changing ROMs to CM10 - Need help getting back photos

So I planned to update to a JB ROM this past weekend and thought to try CM 10. I didn't do a backup of my photos siting on the internal storage. I kept getting a status 7 error so I performed the below steps to successfully complete loading the CM 10 ROM. After though I lost all my photos.
Performed the following:
a. start from stock
b. wipe data/factory reset
c. wipe cache partition
d. wipe dalvik-cache
So I have CM 10 up and running. I looked on xda and google for a way to retrieve files from internal storage wiped away on an Android OS but the two or three possible Windows applications want the phone to run in USB MASS STORAGE when connected to a PC.
CM 10 has 3 options under System Settings->Storage->USB computer connection; including MTP, PTP and Mass Storage. However, when I select MASS STORAGE in the phone and connect it to my Windows 7 PC it automatically moves back to MTP or PTP (depending on which was previous selected before selecting MASS STORAGE).
So if anyone knows how I can make sure USB MASS STORAGE stays enabled when connected would really help or if they know of a way I can retrieve my files some how.

If you did these steps above with Stock Recovery, then I am pretty sure that erases your internal (/data/media) file. I know that TWPR and CWM don't touch the internal SD unless you ask it to. Might be SOL.
Something you could try is a PC program like Recuva. It has worked for others in the past.
Also moving this to Q&A and out of General.

I've tried Recuva. It gives you the option of where the file location is... but there is no option that allows you to see the connected Android Phone. There is one option "On my media card or iPod" but that doesn't prompt or see the phone and there is another option "In a specific location" but that also only shows drives under "My Computer" and any other drives on the network but not the phone.

So I installed the least nightly build from CM (Nov 19th) and USB Mass storage is working.
I can see in Windows Explorer 2 drives... E and F. E shows my External SD card and I see my files.
However, the F: when I click it says please insert disk. This has to be the Internal storage (/storage/sdcard0) but I can't seem to get it to mount to show the system in Windows. Any ideas?

The internal sd is in ext format; not FAT32, so there's no easypeasy way to simply undelete files, but you can try utils like photorec from testdisk that scan every byte for image header fingerprints (which only works on partitionimages or directly in USB masstorage mode; not MTP).
IMO, you should learn from the pit in your stomach to always, Always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have BACKUPS in any case, especially when you're mucking about with stuff you don't understand yet.

Internal Disk & MMC Gone !!

Firstly Happy New Year to all on the forum, my phone has just had a disaster can anyone help please.
My AT&T Glide crashed today in town, and on reboot I couldnt see the MMC 32gb card, which I thought had been corrupted. Well it was, when I put in another 16gb card the phone wont mount it, then I noticed that the internal usb disk isnt mounted either or even recognised ??
Hows this happened and can it be restored simply do I have to download a new dev rom and re flash from the 1.18gb I have left shown on phone as I cant put it to MMC card.
My phone has custom firmware Osimood.0122.RUXKJ5 which has been great up until this MMC sd card crash.
Any help gratefully received as its my work phone and I need it up and running asap.
Many thanks
Paul
Can you boot into cwm? I assume you have it installed. See if you can access the internal sd card from there. If yes then most probably a simple flash will fix everything, or even a nandroid backup assuming you have that as well. If no its not seen in CWM, then I do not know someone else will have to chime in, seems like something is very wrong for it to suddenly lose its memory. Could be some type of controller our buffer that went.
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Thank you for your reply, I went in to CWM and can see an update file on a the sd card so technically if I get the Osimood zip file I could reinstall the system but I am unsure which disk it is seeing this file from I dont think its the external MMC or internal USB so how to I get the file on a storage area that the phone can see.
On the phones settings, under storage pane, USB now has the option to Format USB storage, this has appeared since mounting the system files etc within CWM as most were set to unmounted, but it would not let me mount the sd card as far as I could tell from CWM, when I go to update system menu the option to install update.zip but which disk is this as I could not mount any disk from CWM to view mounted files such as directories etc.
I am in the process of recovering the MMC card that the phone crashed so not all is lost, but I am pretty sure there were files in the Glides USB storage that I would like to save if possible, if I format this storage I am unlikely to recover whats on it, but would a straight reinstall of Osimood format this disk anyway ?
One last question does anyone know what the option "download" is on the power off menu on Osimood it is along side recovery, reboot and power off etc.
ATB
Sorry one last thing I have noticed, when in storage settings SD card has the option to mount when selected it says preparing sd card but nothing actually happens the notice just goes and I'm back to square one, USB has no option in the menu to mount just to format.
I hope that the above is significant in what has happened here.
Thanks
Boot into CWM, enable "mount USB storage", then use a PC to check the internal storage for filesystem problems.
If that doesn't fix it, next step is to factory reset I'm afraid.
Hi everyone, thank you so much for all the assistance I have been at work and therefore forced to format the internal disk which once down the ext sd card became visible again ??? once reinstalling the apps again all is well again, my biggest issue is that all the sd card app back ups failed me as it wiped the ext sd card the internal was wiped on reformat so had to start again.
Note to self back up apks to computer is much safer the ext sd card.
Just hope it doesnt happen again the apk shopper was the culprit that crashed it all.
Many thanks brilliant forum.
