Hi!
I have had a suggestion in Diamond ROM Development section to organize all developed ROMs in a pinned section. Which is almost have been done anyway. The thread can be read here. All I've got to stop pollute the forum which I think in this case is not true. Probably u mods&admins are tired sometimes what I totally understand. I don't want to ruin all this extremely good site with my under leveled posts so if I'm mistaken please excuse.
I think if you read carefully I didn't want any "chefs" to do more jobs as all is written in there. Just organize info in an easy to use manner. I just want to help with ideas.
Skip this if not valuable anyway. I'm disappointed.
i second this notion
seriously, folks....
Did you not read any of the forum guidelines before you started posting? Did you not understand them? IF YOU AREN'T POSTING UP DEVELOPMENT MATERIAL (e.g a new ROM, a new kernel, a system hack, a new radio) STOP STARTING THREADS IN THERE.
the q and a forum is for questions.
and, if you are having an issue with a particular kernel, rom, radio, troll the thread concerning that particular item. chances are that someone else has had the problem, and that another person solved it. if it hasn't been solved, post in that thread, with specifics to your issue.
you do not need to start a thread. in fact, when you start threads that have to be moved, your leftovers have to be cleaned up behind you.
/rant
and no, i don't need some person (db, i'm looking at you) to come in here and say "blah blah blah you're just a wanna be mod", or some other non-helpful comment. the fact of the matter is that there is a place for everything. please keep it in its place. you're more likely to find your answer by searching first, and posting in the correct place. you will also find that you are not starting a load of silly flaming as people bicker and fight about stupid crap.
Wanna be mod.
Thanks.

I agree with you. But why do you always have to be that guy who complains about eveyones posts. It gets kinda old also.

If more developers came in here instead of developer wanna b's answering in such a way as to post boost, then we wouldn't have to...
I personally think the PRI question should be a sticky over there until resolved...but that would be too easy I guess?
nvm.............

why am i complaining? because why should i have to sift through 8 tons of crap because someone else can't read? the development forum is busy enough. if 15 threads weren't moved every day, you'd have to sift through page after page after page of complete nonsense just to find the actual things that belong in there.
sorry. i don't have the time to baby step someone through a complex process when they don't bother to read the simple things.

But "that guy" isn't alone. Lately I've noticed 8+ of us that are "those guys" and growing.
A simple analogy would be comparing parking in the handicapped space at the mall, not worth the risk so you don't... on XDA there is no risk so people park their Q's in the handicapped space (dev) all day long. Neither scenario is right, nor should be tolerated.

I could honestly be missing the point here, but by posting your complaint in the Q&A aren't you just griping to those of us who are already in the correct place for general EVO questions instead of in the dev forum where the offenders actually are?

yes, but what point would i be making by posting it in there? and, as mauldin pointed out, i answer enough of those threads.
however, unless i'm grumpy, i try to both answer their question AND point out that it should be posted in the appropriate place.
I'm with you OP, its irritating and actually disrespectful to the community
BTW, this should have been posted in dev.. lol

I hear you and I just joined XDA not too long ago at all. A few things I learned right away:
- USE THE DAMN SEARCH BUTTON
- READ READ READ READ READ READ
- If you can't find an answer using the search button, open a new tab and Google it
- Still can't find an answer? You'd better search through the other threads before starting a new thread
- These threads wouldn't be so long if people would simply read the OP
- Kittehz r dyin cuz u dont no how 2 reed
Seriously though, I hate to see a great community become angered over lazy people. It ruins it for those of us who do heed the rules.
I am with the OP and to the persons aying if more devs came and answered there questions in QA they wouldnt ask in dev .... most of the people answering questions in DEv arent the DEVS. the DEVS are busy developing things and shouldnt be expected to waste there time answering the same 3 questions everyday all day.
Many people on the forum DO come to the Q&A and try to provide insight. Some are less helpful then others but in general you will get flamed less, you will get the answer and you wont cause issues with the "neatness" of the forums.

Fair enough. As a seasoned XDA vet of a whopping 3 posts (including this one), I would defer to you on this issue, but I just think it looks like you're complaining to the wrong people. We're already in the Q&A which means we're already doing what you devs have been trying to get the offending posters (who are over in the dev forum) to do. They're not gonna see your OP in here because they're too busy bypassing the Q&A and heading over to Dev to annoy you guys with generic questions again.
Basically what has happened is the Evo and other somewhat likfe phones have blown up. Word spread like wildfire that XDA was the place to get any and all help with your phones. (Which don't get me wrong 99% of the people here are more then willing to help.) This brought a lot of new people on the scene and wanting information and help. Unfortunately some of those people don't want to play by the rules of the road.
Maybe it's just me but it seems like over the past couple months this is what's happened. I seem to remember another thread this was brought up and a suggestion was made about being a member for a certain period of time before being able to create a new thread. I'm not saying this needs to happen because I don't think that would solve anything actually.
Ok...my rant's over now too.
*Just my 2 cents*
I went to Android with the sweetest phone on the market (Samsung Galaxy S) and never looked back. However I still have my Tilt and Tilt2 and I thought I might try and install Froyo or something tastly on my old phones...
THESE FORUMS ARE A MESS!
So here I am, and by the look of it there is nothing going on but people flooding the forum with cries for help and people waving the white flag. I assume the big boi dev's moved on to better devices as I did or they got tired of you clowns flooding this forum. ANYONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT THE DEAL IS. IF THERE IS ANYTHING GOING ON MAYBE WE SHOULD STICKY IT OR MOVE ALL THESE QUESTION THREADS, THIS ONE INCLUDED TO A SUBTHREAD.
If they have it working on my Tilt half way decent I cant belive the Tilt2 is getting ditched.
What are you talking about dude? There's a sticky thread already. There's just too many people who can't read FAQ's and are asking the same questions again and again. As this project gets more popularity, more people flood the forums.
how do you have almost as many posts as I, and not even know about the biggest project on rhodium?
do you even read anything in these forums?
and as far as i know, we have the best devs right here on site giving constant top tier advice, updates, software, hacks and mods.
what white flags do you see, besides "iphone" users who try their hand at a real device.
stick to ur samsung, this is HTC.

So, you open a new thread to ask a question which was answered in the very first thread on the forum, that was also stickied. Then you begin to use vulgarities to debase other forum members? I'm glad you use another phone, and don't come to this forum anymore.
Not to pile on but that first stickied thread has over 9,000 posts and 1,000,000 views. Even a noob like me knew to go there first.

Thanks Senior Mod.
Wondered whom the person was calling clowns. Unless we have an apology, the person should be suspended.
I'm sure all of you are getting sick of the flood of questions that come in and the single question and answer thread is just too long to go through to find questions let alone answer them. Hopefully we can get enough people on board to let the moderators know that this is a welcome addition. Seeing as how many phones have highest number of threads in the Q&A section, I think it is a worthy addition.
Problems:
1) Lack of moderation - the volume of posts, especially from new users is higher than the what can reasonably be moderated by the current number of moderators.
2) Relevant threads containing real information are buried by new threads (many which are off topic or not posted in the correct forum)
3) The forum is disorganized, which exacerbates the issue of new users asking duplicate, off topic, poor, misinformed questions.
4) There is an incredible lack of information for new users on usage, which creates a contentious atmosphere between new users and senior members who re-answer the same questions over and over, most of the time about HOW to use the forum and search features.
5) User modifiable resources like the wiki are unknown or obfuscated from new and long time members alike, thus rarely used. (On a side note....we should all be using the wiki to push pertinent information, valueable posts, references and guides up so that noobs (and experienced users also) can find them easier.)
Proposed Solutions:
1) Create additional subforums to help organize posts into relevant categories. (I vote for at least Q&A. MOST popular forums on XDA have this, so there is certainly precedent.)
2) Better sticky posts, with clearer titles. "Hello from your moderator." is not as clear to a new user as "[MANDATORY README]-[FORUM RULES][QUESTIONS][INSTRUCTIONS][If you don't read this you will be flamed, harrassed, possibly shanked in your sleep!]" You are reading this thread because of the title...that or you saw the DVDA postfix...you sick sick bastard...either way I win.
3) More moderators. It is far too hard for Whosdaman to constantly update sticky posts with relevant info. It is up to everyone here to get that info out so we aren't bombarded with questions that have been answered a hundred times. Wiki anyone?
4) We have a great resource in user editable wiki. There is a lot of stuff that can be done BETTER on a wiki than in a 1000 post thread, like reference material, guides, and instructions. We need to make it obvious to ALL users that the wiki exists and get people on board with updating it. Threads are a great way to hash out possible solutions and have a group discussion, but a lot of times what people need is a reference or guide and they shouldn't have to search a 1000 post thread to pull the relevant information.
5) Original posters need to update their OP when new information is revealed or when there is misinformation in a post. Having a post that's title says your flash cell is about to explode only to have to read 600 posts to find out that this information is untrue helps no one. Discussion is GREAT. Misinformation is NOT, and only fuels the confusion and duplicate thread issues.
From The Front Line:
Thanks for the outpouring of support and ideas to help get the ball rolling. Several of our ideas have been recently implemented so I am really hoping for some good news next war update.
20110109: Woot! We now have Q&A. Thanks mods and supporters!
20110109: My social experiment of double entendre "sticky posts" has 2000 views in only a couple of days. I'm not going to call this one confirmed, but if it stopped even 1 bad thread it was worth it.
20110109: We have sticky wiki in all the subforums. Now we need to add content to the wiki before people stop using it.
One Last Thing:
There are very few things we can change with regard to how many new users visit this forum, or the knowledge level of these users. The only thing we CAN do is make what they need to do as obvious as possible to these users, so that we can spend more time coding and writing relevant posts, instead of redirecting people to the search button, or frustration flaming newbies.
+1 agreed. This is ridiculous, it's a clusterf**k in these forums. Q & A is exactly what we need.

No, Q&A IS the general forum. What is needed is a sticky in the general forum with a CLEAR and concise description of how to:
root
use Odin
use clockwork
flash themes
flash roms
battery saving methods
airplane mode trick
DRM services and how to stop them
and ANYTHING else that gets asked multiple times a day. I dont know if some sort of limited moderator status can be granted, but if so it would be nice for noobnl, Daemon and a bunch of others to have said status and be able to update this sticky at any time. I am sure there are a ton of people who would be glad to do it.
Then, what is needed is a sticky called FROYO SPECULATION, where EVERY thread that deals with speculation of the coming Froyo release is moved, and all discussion of that topic is directed.

That is EXACTLY what the Wiki is for. But people either don't know about it, use it, or update it. Anyone can update the wiki. Leaving all of the cleanup to moderators isn't fair, or effective at getting stuff up quickly. There should be better indication to go to the wiki and more people need to start using it.

Thats fine, but where the eff is the wiki? A person who just bought their epic and signed up would NEVER find it. There needs to be like a flashing light and have the font in size 4.2 million saying "Epic 4g XDA User Manual" or something like that.

I agree. Or a sticky at the top of ALL of the subforums linking to the wiki. There used to be a STICKYWIKI post, but the title got changed.
I agree the wiki needs serious editing and updating, and we should all be somewhat responsible. Maybe if you flame a newbie, you have to add a paragraph, like a swear jar smoothone, get typing hahaha.. sorry... had to... but I get the feeling you dont mind.
Honestly, I wish sprint would just say screw you, no froyo. This way, people would move on, keep developing, not thinking to wait on that elusive source code... and stop *****ing. The repeat questions, etc werent that bad until that stupid 26th thing brought a bunch of new people at once, so everyone here who was already waiting and annoyed, then get bombarded with new people who heard about XDA from engadget.
BTW... wheres those two who had those super secret sources?????? Kinda quiet....
Bloggers: do not cite an XDA member, or their word they have a good source unless they show you the goods! Somehow, everyone thinks XDA really knows more than the average joe... and dont trust Sprint sales info or personnel!!!!
Sure, let's create yet ANOTHER ignored forum that the mod(s) get to monitor and spend more time on while every single new user here ignores it and the search button just to post the question anyway.
Instead of making a new forum, we need another moderator added to help manage the forum.
And make a post count minimum to START a new thread!! Too many ppl coming over straight from google and, not knowing how to use xda (or their effen owners manual) to its fullest.

Dumping questions to a Q&A forum creates less clutter for the other forums, thus relevant threads will more likely be in the first two pages.

I love that idea, but there are occasionally relevant posts from new users. I would like to think that not EVERYONE that initially comes to XDA is a moron. But I guess I'm a glass half full kind of guy.
It looks like a lot of people are in favor of it.
The Q&A forum will just be full of people asking the SAME QUESTIONS over and over and over again. Why not just create a sticky that either links to an updated wiki or better yet that lays out nicely how to do basic things with the Epic4g?

That's ok, as long as the questions aren't in the other forums. But I agree, sticky to the wiki should be on all subforums.
Personally I don't care if the Q&A forum is filled with spam repost topics. All I, and others, want is for the it to be quarantined.

That will happen in any forum. We do need a sticky, but don't expect that to stop the noobs from asking before reading.
I see that some of the other Galaxy phones here on xda have a Q&A in addition to a general section. General is used for general discussion and Q&A is for all questions. It seems like it would be more obvious for noobs to wander into the Q&A section to ask questions and hopefully save the mods some effort while also cleaning up our little corner of this website.

Exactly my point. Also, as someone mentioned...the cycle of useless questions that cant be prevented will at least be quarantined.
I've been a member for over a year and been fairly active in the Epic 4G forum.
It has been my experience that a myriad of questions are constantly re-asked & re-answered by ROM devs and other little elves b/c people are too lazy to search/read-back the threads, or are simply too daunted by 10's & 100's of pages of posts.
This has become a problem to the point where on a couple different occassions we created off-site Wikis just to help redirect people to answers to common problems. The problem with this is people have to be told each time..."Go to the Wiki [here]". It would be grand if you would enable Wiki-posts. It would allow each thread to have its own little ecosystem so that Devs wouldn't have to micro-manage & update OP with Q&A on every little bug, the little guys could keep it up to snuff. It's a great way to crowd-source troubleshooting. I've seen it successfully done on a number of threads.
What's more, I believe the OP can disable it if he prefers not to have one.
Thanks for listening!
.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.

Very aware of the XDA Wiki, in fact, we are using it at the moment (albeit it, somewhat unsuccessfully).
One advantage of in-thread Wiki is that it's all right there, right below the OP, right after all the other instructions. EVERYONE sees it, instead of a link to another page.
Another advantage is that it's generally easier for people to edit the in-thread wiki posts than an actual Wiki-page (I know neither is difficult, but this comes from my experience helping to maintain a ROM-devoted Wiki).
As far as the drawbacks of in-thread Wikis, perhaps spam, or it being forced after the initial Post?
I'd like to throw the idea around. I know it would help troubleshooting/Q&A in the forums I participate in, thought I'd throw it out there in case others would be interested.
Thanks!
P.S. Thanks for moving my thread (and shame on my for not reading the forum descriptions more closely)
I second this. It's borderline vital in long development threads. The off thread wiki doesn't do a whole lot of good if the link to that wiki needs to be hunted for, same as everything else.
Too bad the wiki doesn't even work on my computer...I think it's something with my wifi but idk.
Years on and this is still something I wish we had on this forum. In thread wikis are essential, especially on a website as big as this with threads that run for hundreds of pages. When you come to a thread months or years after it started, the OP is often irrelevant, and the links broken. It's not reasonable to expect someone to read hundreds of pages in a forum thread to find out what the current situation is.
So people ask the same questions, over and over. Eventually people get annoyed and stop answering, and just say the ever unhelpful "go read". I'm always willing to read and learn. But wading though tons of outdated data doesn't have to be a necessity. A simple thread wiki post would make this so much easier. If you're not familiar with the concept SlickDeals.net has one (it's available to every thread but not always used). A deal is posted, people chime on on how to improve the deal. The thread may go one for a few pages, but the wiki means you can get all the relevant info in one place. The info from the OP can change, the OP doesn't have to answer basic questions over and over, or any questions. Another person can take over the thread and keep it relevant.
I checked out this wiki https://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung but it's not updated. So why not a wiki post, it's right where people are looking for the info, so more likely to remain relevant and updated.
Years on from this OP and still no in-thread wiki post? Any reason why?
I'm a PHP developer, and have been for more than a decade, if any techs want to talk more about this, I'd be happy to chat.
My favorite is when people start belly aching and go on a tirade if a newcomer hasny read the entire thread. 1/4 of which is people asking for ETAs, and the other 1/4, people getting pissed at people asking for ETAs. Like they are getting brownie points from the Dev or something X^D
I have wasted so many people's time because I've had to ask questions that have been covered a billion times. I've also had tips/tricks get buried and never come to light again which is a shame.
XDA is all about development and progression, and yet the absence of a wiki post prevents a lot of knowledge from being readily available and wastes Devs time.
