Is It Possible to Run with Battery Removed? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there such a fixture to install in place of the battery that would power the phone while it's connected to wall-power or a computer? I keep hearing batteries last longer on laptops when connected to power and have their batteries removed.

What you are referring to is using the laptop while the battery is plugged in and charging. I think it depends on the laptop and the battery, as it's not a 100% thing, may even by a myth.
As for the EVO, no, you can't power it without a battery. The USB power doesn't provide enough power to keep the phone active, that or HTC just didn't make it that way.
Also, the batteries for phones are cheap. If in a year you need to replace it, fork over the $20..or for $10 you can get an AC charger and 2 spare batteries off ebay.

The problem with usb through the computer is that it throttles the power being pulled to not damage the computer, when plugged into the wall it's full power.

I have done it, but it doesn't work all the time, I had to do it like when it was booting and stuff.
I only tried from the wall.

[Q] ac adapter with battery backup, two usb ports that plugs straight into the wall??

Anyone see anything like this? I thought I saw something like this once. What I'm looking for:
* plugs straight into the wall: doesn't rely on any extra cables, or micro/mini usb cords
* has *2* usb ports
* includes an internal battery that charges when your phone is charged so if you're away and you have this little box you have extra power
again: no extra cables (aside from a usb cable for your phone, but no charging via mini/micro, charges through the wall ac), battery backup, and 2 ports
Thanks for any input!

Power Jack
You should be more things with you.
Or I could get a device that fits my needs (and exists) .
So the OP confused the hell out of me.

Lets cover the basics first. You essentially want an AC powered external battery for your phone, that has an additional 2 (full-size?) USB ports (assumedly just for power purposes - not as a data hub?).
However, you want it to charge your phone, but without cables, but with a USB cable...
FFFFFFUUUUUUUU!
So do you want a hardwired cable and then 2 spare ports? Or do you want 2 USB ports to be used with normal phone USB cables?
TO CHARGE THE BACKUP BATTERY: no extra cables, plugs straight into the wall, no charging via mini/micro usb charges through the wall ac
TO CHARGE YOUR PHONE: just use your usb cable (standard size, not for data) for your phone and plug it into the unit
So nothing like these:
http://tiny.cc/xj3ow
Hope that's more clear.
I saw someone using something like this once, but I can't find it online.
http://www.amazon.com/Charger-Battery-Motorola-Samsung-powered/dp/B004FEMDXY
Getting closer. But the one I saw had two ports
So this then: http://www.puroitalianstyle.it/en/batteria-demergenza-2-porte-usb-emergency-battery-2-usb-ports
Pretty crappy capacity internal battery, but looks to be the best you can get.
Its not the same as I've seen, but its best I've seen online so far. I'll keep looking but I'll probably try and go for that one.
The benefit of these things is that you can charge your backup battery and phone at the same time and you only need one cable so no mix up with micro/mini cables. With those other batteries I always had to have two different cables (if my phone used micro) and then make sure I charged both.
Thanks!
Search for "Revolve Electronics xeMicro Hybrid USB Charger and Battery Backup with Emergency Squeeze Dynamo" and follow Amazon link. The internal battery is only 1,350maH on the unit but it looks like it meets your requirements. I'd post the Amazon link directly but being a new user on the forum, they won't let me.
Thanks pas,
I actually got this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Digipower-EBP...6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315323836&sr=1-6
PROS:
* no need to carry other cables (aside from a standard usb cable that you would use to charge a phone anyways)
* two ports
* flashlight (only useful if you dont have one--like me)
* plugs right into AC (don't have to plug some usb cable into a usb port to charge)
CONS:
* not high capacity (1700 mah I think)
Frankly, I don't think the last one is a big deal. I sold a (actually two) XP18000 with 18,000 mAh (yes that's thousand mAh) but it was too bulky and required extra cables. For 90% of users, you only need an extra battery if you didn't charge the night before, an emergency, or unusual heavy use. By the time your phone's battery and this one is dead you'll be next to an outlet where you can charge again. I have *never* needed more capacity, it might be nice, but the point for overkill isn't that far off from this battery.
That's a nice unit. I ordered a 6,600 maH battery pack (New Trent acd66) with dual usb ports the other day. It uses the same microUSB cable as my phones so I won't have to worry about carrying extra cables. Hope it works okay.
That one does look nice. The only reason I asked for an ac charging solution is that 1) usb-charging tends to charge slow (my old 12000 mAh wouldn't dare resort to a usb charging port) 2) it assumes you are next to a desktop. You are more likely to find an electrical outlet than a usb port. If you wanted to charge it so that you have a backup for your phone before a flight, say, you end stealing power from your laptop (unless your laptop happened to be at 100% and plugged in) just so that you have a backup for your phone. Of course you could bring a wall charger with usb ports, but that means you have to lug around something else.
It's not *that* big of a deal, the main reason I went with ac is because I kept forgetting to charge my phone at night, so I just plug it into this battery and if I happen to forget to charge it, the battery will be charged and I can charge it during my commute.
I'm pretty sure you can charge the acd66 using the same usb cable and wall charge plug that my HTC EVO uses. That's how I read the specs anyway. I had the same concern you have about not wanting to be limited to a PC usb port for charging it up. Hope I'm not disappointed when it shows up.
Not sure if this helps....

Take a look at this: Its at Seidio online and called the Multifunction battery charger. I am not allowed to post outside links since I'm new so I'm sorry I just could give you the link.
Good price and Seidio is a pretty good company. I've purchased items from them and been happy. Sometimes a little expensive on certain items but this is only $29. Might be worth looking into. Also take a look at Gorilla Gadgets, they may have something and they have excellent customer service and ship quick. Hope this helps and good luck.

But then you have to carry around the charger AND an extra battery AND you have to swap it out. I don't see the benefit unless you're planning on going through lots of batteries over a long period of time. But if that's the case, just go to ebay and buy tons of battery and associated charger either from Hong Kong (or even in the US). I could get 4 batteries and 2 chargers for for the price you're quoting:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?rt=n...y&_dmpt=PDA_Accessories&_trksid=p3286.c0.m301
What about the ZAGGsparq for $99.99!!! But it has a 6000mAh battery.
That is what you're looking for isn't it?
ac adapter with replacement battery
I got this one: (see attached file!)
for my sgs2 along with a replacement battery. Only one USB port though!
Yeah I had some of those. BUt you end up carrying around extra batteries. I was looking for a external battery, not one you would have to turn of the phone and replace the battery with. But those work depending on your needs.
Have you found it yet???

Drained Battery ONLY charges from wall charger?

Anyone else notice that our Nitro is rather fickle about the power source it receives?
If my battery is completely drained, it MUST be plugged into a higher power source than USB (so far a wall charger that ouputs 750ma works) until it gets an initial charge (usually needs at least a couple of %)...Then it will accept charging from USB (USB provides 500ma).
I can tell when it's in this "state" because it remains dead if I plug it into USB and then if I plug it into a wall charger the touch buttons at the bottom flash for a few times and then the LG logo pops up and finally a charging battery icon comes on. Considering this sequence, this seems like a functionality of the phone. I wonder if this is common, my Nexus One certainly didn't have a higher-initial charge rate requirement when the battery was dead.
I've experienceed the same scenario.

I only have chargers that operate 1.8amps and higher.
As the battery is an issue the higher the amps the faster it will charge

Well I did notice that if it was on usb...and I had bluetooth...gps, and wifi...plus running some apps and stuff...the battery actually continued to drain I think they have the usb thing as a safety measure...for some reason...I think it's odd...but meh
try a usb cable that has 2 jacks plugs to connect to tyhe computer. These cables are often supplied with external hard drives as they they require more power than can be supplied by just one usb connection.
I was also having the problem of my p-930 discharging while plugged into compute usb jack - even when screen off nad only in charge mode. I have since bought a dual plugged usb cable and it charges now. Although I haven't tried it from a completely discharged state.
my spectrum is the same way.. i can charge it with usb.. but it takes about 15-20 minutes to get enough charge to turn on

This! I only charge with a wall adapter now. I had a hard time charging it until someone here recommended this to me.

Charging the E4GT with non oem adapter

The original Samsung charger outputs 5V---1000ma, I have an extra blackberry micro usb charger that outputs 5V---750ma.
I want to use my old blackberry charger in my office, will this different current output affect my battery long term or short term?

One of the immediate side effects will be that your phone will take a longer time to fully charge your battery.
If I helped you out in any way please thank me. Thanks.
Not sure how the blackberry chargers are. I know some of the Motorola chargers are accepted by the phone for high current charging (any charger that doesn't puts the phone in low current mode).
I charge my phone every night on my old 700mah Samsung charger and while it does take longer youd hardly notice unless you were trying to get as much charge in say an hour as possible. So as long as the phone doesn't limit it you should be good. <500mah is very noticeable.
I know it will take longer to charge. But Im not as familiar with appropriate charging output for li-ion as i am for ni-mh Sanyo eneloops for example that ideally should be charged at 220ma to maximize cell life.

The rule still applies the less current used to charge the better the lifespan. The phone was paired with a battery with the intention of using a 1 amp charger. The phone will only allow high current charging mode if it thinks the charger is Samsung. Shorting the data pins is a way to fool it and many aftermarket chargers already do this.
With your phone on and the phone in low current mode (320 mah i believe) you will have a hard time charging the phone if anything is wake locking the phone even screen off. You will even have trouble charging and using the phone at 500mah depending on whats going on.
The phone will be eating some amount of power from the charger, the battery is not always seeing as much current as you might think. I always stick by the practice of not deep discharging it, LiION would rather be topped off then not charged (geeze remember NiCad laptop batteries.... lol). I feel this battery will be the shortest lifespan of any phone or laptop I have ever had. Just due to how much use it sees.
Charger
Any micro usb charger should work. I've had a dozen or so different gadgets that all use micro usb from Blue Tooth headsets, to speakers. I use all chargers interchangeably with one noteable exception. My wife's Nook Tablet will only charge using the provided Nook charger. Found that out the hard way.
I have also found that not all micro usb cables will provide data transfer for all phones. I'm guessing different pin-outs? For instance when I was trying to root my ET4G, I forgot my OEM cable at home so I tried to use my EVO cable. That dind't work well at all.
My old blackberry chargers seemed to work fine but I started seeing some strange jumping around of the battery while using. For instance it would all of a sudden jump up to 100% charged then if I unplugged and plugged back in it would go back to 70% or whatever. I went back to only samsung or just charging off usb. I use my pc, printer, cable box etc to charge my phone.
I charge mine with either the stock charger that came with my E4GT, or an old 700MAh charger that came with my old Samsung Rant. Occasionally I use the charger that came with my HTC Evo 4G. I really can never tell a difference. Although, like someone above said, it seems as if non-Samsung usb cables will not charge when plugged into a computer. That's how it is with the HTC cable, and I've also tried an LG usb cable and got the same results.

I had the exclaim, the replacement to the rant and thats where my 700mah charger came from.
All of my other Micro USB cables except the one are non samsung and I use them all for charging, data and they charge while connected to pc. But none of them are from other phone manufacturers or anything. The Micro USB spec is what these phones are using there is no difference.
The difference that matters most of the time is tolerances. Its easy to end up with cables that will work well in one port but not another. The rest of the cable may also be out of spec and not work well or at all for certain purposes.
I've ruined two batteries because of non-OEM chargers on the ET4G. (Actually, ruined two, and made a third battery just render terrible performance.) I definitely don't have the problem with other devices I own, and it's definitely happened with two separate ET4G's I've owned.
So, "be very careful using alternate chargers" is all I would advise.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't electricity the same no matter the source?
If the phone is looking to pull 1A and your charger is rated for .7A I'd be worried about the charger not the battery, which technically is a cell not a battery.
Tolerances were mentioned before and I think that is most of the problem with certain cables working fine for some people and not others. All connectors and cabling are supposed to meet the USB spec and many cheap ones don't. Also the supposed 10,000 insertion rating for micro USB is a bit optimistic imo. I replace cables after a couple months max because of loose connections.

Not really because these chargers are doing AC to DC conversion and voltage regulation is a huge factor in its job. With a bad charger design not only can charging be affected, possibly even hurt the battery. Since the phone will consumer charger power to run while on the charger the phone can become unstable. Not talking a defective charger, just bad and cheap designs.

I think about that alot actually. Coming from PC power supplies you never want to overload the unit. But I know for a fact I have devices that demand more from chargers than can be given, and do not have the low current and high current modes like this phone.
I am no electrical engineer and am only familiar with AC to DC and DC to AC circuits and various voltage regulation techiniques. But it is possible to current limit as well right? You design a half amp charger, with the data pin short to put the Samsung into high current. You limit the current to 500 mah but over build the components just a little to increase lifespan.
Anyways, I bought a 2.1 Amp RCA wall charger from walmart last night on a wim. 9 bucks, might come in handy when i get a tablet. Has a 1 Amp side and a 2.1 Amp thats shared with the 1 Amp. Phone didn't show any ill will to it and I had my Schosche GoBatt on the 1 amp end. If the phones drawing too much current could be bad in the long run but its working so far. Charged at the normal speed of the stock charger.

I agree with you on bad and cheap designs. How many tv's and other electronics have been rendered useless by a few substandard capacitors that saved the manufacturer $.02 per unit?
I try not to use any charger that doesn't have HTC, Samsung, etc on the label. I figure if they were willing to back it warranty wise for the original device it should put out clean enough power.
I'm far from being engineer but I do quite a bit of hardware hacking and learned a little bit about electronics when I was at Ft Gordon. So I'm not completely lost around a multimeter
I would imagine that there is some protection built into the charging circuit of the phone itself. How effective or what kind of tolerance Idk suppose I could look for datasheets if anybody really cares.

Question and accessories?

I am have Dinc2 from Verizon. In the last week, it has stopped charging normally. Even when it is plugged into AC power it thinks it is plugged into USB power (this can be confirmed from the about phone menu). Also, the charge port is very, very fiddily (which I understand is an issue with this phone). The phone is well over 1 year old. So, I have two questions:
1. Why is it only registering USB power?
2. Anybody know of a decent price on batteries and an external charger for them? This way we could constantly be charging batteries and have one is reserve for when one dies. Thanks.

I picked up a set of two batteries with a wall charger for about $13 on ebay. They lasted about a year, then they seem to have died. I haven't bothered replacing them, since the OEM battery is still fine. One other note: I have dust under my screen and in my camera lenses. I wonder if it was because I took the back off so often to change batteries, but I don't know if that is the case.
Also, a lot of people have replaced the charge port for a good price. You can find a how to somewhere, but I don't have the link.

Is it safe to use this cable for charging my phone?

My phone is nokia X1-01 basic phone
It comes with AC-3 charger
I live in a home and office where power plugs are very rare to find but lot of usb ports. Those days i use smart phones they are easily chargeable as they had micro usb. Can i buy the below cable to charge my phone? I know it is compatible with my phone but my worries are will it reduce the life time of phone or battery? I don't worry when i charge my older phones because they had micro usb that as every one know always same voltage and amp.

I have three phones with microusb
I have three phones with microsub, and i charge all with diferents microsub cable, sometimes with the microsube of my digital camera. My phones are lg,sony, and one chinnesse phone. I don't see problems with the microusb and don't feel something strange in the life time of the battery.
Don't worry about battery life. Perhaps it will charge a little bit slower than with a real power adapter, but there's most likely no difference at all.
