Noob Questions on Rooting - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK i have a couple completely noobish questions about rooting. I have a EVo 4g and wanna know what do I need to install and the free "root-needed" android wifi tether app. I know I have to be rooted to use it but I would like to keep my stock rom and sprint apps, is that possible? In other words, can I have root acces on my stock rom? And if so what the Easiest and safest way to root my Evo. Will I need to reset/wipe my data to root my phone? Also if I root my evo and install these "Root needed" type apps what happens when I installed the OTA updates? Will it just stop the app from working or brick my phone(doubt it)?
Sorry for the noob questions but I havent rooted or add a custom rom since my ATT fuze and forgot how.
Thanks.
Also is this the best wifi tether app for the evo? http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?q=label:Experimental

I have read in places that unrEVOked will allow you to use WiFi Tether.

Rooting Problems

I had my phone rooted and decided to unroot to get the OTA update which I did, but I tried rooting the phone again and I can't no longer root the phone.
Has any one experience this before?
Can I use unrevoked?
i dont know about unrevoked. if you do the factory reset and reroot using toasts method, there is a stock rom you can flash that has the OTA update biult in that will allow you to keep the root. all of the info is on the first page where toast describes the rooting process. hope this helps.
I guess there is no way to revoked so I can root my phone again. I like to learn if this is possible I guess, I will miss the tether app that I enjoy so much.
Please any one
I am still trying to root my evo after installing the OTA and have not been able to root it again.
Can anyone help if possible?
I will appreciate any suggestions at this point
Thanks in advance
how to unroot
i tried rooting my phone last night and it messed up, i think.. i know the root didnt work. how can i get my phone back to stock? I am new with androids and not sure what im really doin
You can use the unrevoked method if you are just mainly using it for the tether app.
http://unrevoked.com/m/
then click the image to install it.
un root
i just would like to get my phone back to stock, i did the unrevoked root, then tried to do a ROM, and the rom part did take all the way. I still have the ROM Manager app still on my phone.. should i delete that
Just use this and it will bring u back to stock - remember google search is your friend

[Q] Couple of small questions

Hello,
Quick question for you talented folks. I had previously rooted my EVO using Unrevoked. Then Sprint pushed out a update that made that not work. I now have uninstalled Unrevoked and did the update to Froyo 2.2.
What I want to do is use the wireless tether function I had before with the first root.
So the question is...how do I ( A simple slow person) root my phone so I can use wireless tethering.

1. This should be in Q&A.
2. I don't believe there is a root process in place yet for 2.2. It was highly stressed to people to not take the OTA update other you WILL lose root. Now you have to wait for the developers to figure out a new root process for 2.2
questions go in the Q&A section but to answer your q there is no way to root 2.2 as of now
Moved to Q&A.
Thanks for the quick (and mostly friendly)reply's.
I did a quick Google and search.before posting. However I did not find what I needed.
Since this seemed to be the place in the know I asked here.
Sorry I put the question in the wrong forum

[Q] Rooting advice

I have an EVO running 1.47.651.1. I used Unrecover3 to root it and have the WiFi tether app working. I don't think this took care of the NAND unlock though.
I'd like to get to a stock 2.2 ROM that's rooted, just to keep wifi tethering working and get some of the Froyo improvements, but don't want to lose camera functionality (3MP vs 8MP), break any of the radios, etc. along the way.
Unrecover3 installed the ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1 recovery ROM, which enabled me to do a nandroid backup of my current environment.
My understanding is that from this point I need to NAND unlock and flash a rooted 2.2 ROM (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Is there a single comprehensive guide that will take me from 1.47.651.1 to 2.2, preserving ROOT, without any fancy ROM hacks other than the minimum required to keep wifi tethering working?
Sorry for the n00b questions; there are a LOT of guides and threads here and I just don't want to follow the wrong one and brick a new $500+ phone.
look into unrevoked forever, i think this might help you, if not then correct me.
Simple Root
I don't know too much about unrevoked. I rooted using Simple Root. It is very easy. I would suggest you reroot using this method, which will give you nand unlocked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565
After you gain root, you can flash a stock 2.2 ROM (search dev forum) I rooted a long time ago so I'm not sure if the newest version of Simple Root will update your radios (Read the thread/site, it may mention it). Search forums to find the latest radio verions and confirm that yours match.
After your have 2.2, I highly recommend that you flash netarchy's custom kernel, which will fix audio streaming, as well as significantly boost FPS, which will make your phone feel like a new phone. You can find that kernel here:

Good luck.

+1 for simpleroot
I highly recommend: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741294. There have been people stating they've been having problems with simple root.
This TUT looks overly simple. If you are unsure about how to get adb working or how to work with it...just reply here or feel free to PM me.
"You will need to have the android sdk installed, as you will need to use the adb tool."
I'm a lost noob looking to do exactly what rjhollan was asking for. I followed your link to that thread but was lost immediately. I've been reading and searching to try and avoid asking dumb questions but I'm lost on this now. Any help appreciated. I was at least quick enough to deactivate OTA updates so I'm at 1.47....
You got Root and NAND unlocked

Perhaps you used "unrEVOked3" not unrecover3...
unrEVOked3 will give you Root and NAND unlock.
I would suggest doing the unrEVOked forever now.
Look at your ROM Manager and and DOWNLOAD ROM in the program. I would suggest "Fresh".

[Solved] Temp root stock rom tether

I temp rooted with visionary v14 and downloaded both barnacle wifi tether and wireless tether and tried both and neither were able to connect to my ubuntu laptop. Both apps said they were broadcasting and has superuser permissions but my laptop couldn't get internet connection.
I assume this has something to do with the stock rom/kernal, but i'd like to know if I can wirelessly tether without getting perm root and flashing a custom rom (don't have the courage to attempt it yet)
Sent from my stock G2
Isnt there a stock wifi tether that you dont even need temp root to use?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Flashing a ROM is noob friendly and has great benefits! But that is the only way i know of wifi tethering without your system blocking it. ROMS come stock with a wifi tether setting that works everytime.
I know flashing roms are easy (I'm coming from the g1), but I don't have perm root yet, and id rather not mess with gfree until I have no other option because there are more steps to mess up.
But I guess I'll have to muster up the courage to perm root and flash cm7 or some sense rom.
P.S. does cm7 have fm radio support?

he should be able to tether with temp root as long as the temp root was actually successful... doesn't really have anything to do with custom roms.

yes, CM7 has the fm radio app.
check this thread out. and this one.
for the record, I was able to tether wirelessly on the stock froyo rom (granted, I was permarooted with gfree/rage, but again I don't think this should matter... if you're temp rooted, it should work unless something has changed in the past few months) with the wireless tether app. now I just use the built-in Cyanogen tethering solution.
Thanks guys, I'll try the newer wireless tether app and if that doesn't work I'll try gfree perm rooting.

It turns out all I had to do was get a new version of Wireless Tether to get it to work. I was using the old 2.0.2 version from my G1, so I updated to the 2.0.7 version.

4.2.2 Root problems?

Hey everyone! I recently (yes, just recently :/ ) updated the Verizon Galaxy Nexus from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 this past weekend and I used the app "Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper" to keep root access while downloading the OTA. I didn't want to update to 4.2.2 but long story short, I did. I was unwilling to update since many people have had troubles getting wifi tether to work and I wanted to avoid that and keep running on 4.1.2 to keep wifi tether with no problems (Don't fix what's broken, right?). Well, I used another app "Root Checker" to validate my root access, and it says "Sorry! This device does not have proper root access." and I was wondering how I lost my root access in the process? Would anyone know by chance? I'm not too familiar with root anymore since I've had my phone rooted for over a year now using the 1-click toolkit that many people dislike. I was wondering what I should do next, in order to have root access once again. I don't want to run the risk of bricking my phone and having to pay big bucks for a new phone. Anything helps!!
