ROM Manager Help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an issue with ROM Manager not installing the ROM I just downloaded. I downloaded the Fresh 0.2 ROM and after it finished I chose to Backup Existing ROM & Wipe Data and Cache. I hit OK and nothing happens.
Isn't the phone supposed to automatically turn off and do it's thing? If you can help me I'll send a Google Voice invite your way. I'm dying to install this ROM but I want to know what I'm missing. Do I have to flash a new radio with this ROM?
MrDSL.... anyone help

I'm no expert..make sure youre fully rooted and have the latest copy of clockwork installed..
Sent from my EVO via Tapatalk

I have version: 1.8.2.1 DSL. I did the trick mentioned in another thread where you choose and older version and revert back to the current.
My question is when I run ROM Manager and flash is it supposed to automatically restart my device and do the whole process? Do I have to put it in recovery? Thanks.
By the way I payed for the ROM Manager 3.99 since it includes more options.

Do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699100&highlight=reboot+chmod

I tried that and I'm stuck at the last 2 commands. It's saying:
# chmod 755 reboot
Unable to chmod reboot: No such file or directory
# chmod 755 reboot
Unable to chmod reboot: No such file or directory
# chmod 755 reboot
Unable to chmod reboot: No such file or directory
# chmod 755 /system/bin/reboot
Unable to chmod /system/bin/reboot: Read-only file system
#
The Evo is in debugging mode and plugged in for charging only. What am I doing wrong. I placed the file in the right spot. By the way I used this rooting method:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/17766-how-full-root-evo-4g-mac.html

The fact that /system is read-only means that you are not doing these commands from within recovery. /system is read-only when the device is booted in to the OS.

Ok so I put it in recovery, plugged it in and opened terminal. Ran commands and everything seemed to go find although it didn't reboot on it's own.
/system/bin # chmod 755 reboot
/system/bin # chmod 755 /system/bin/reboot
/system/bin # exit
new-host:tools gQ$
I chose the option for reboot now and the phone turned back on. Tried to flash rom and still won't reboot on it's own and flash the ROM. What did I do wrong? What is the exit command?

exit just exit's the shell.... I don't know man, looks like you've done it right, maybe it's a problem in ROM Manager? Go grab QuickBoot from the market; That's what I use. When I want to flash, I just hit the 'reboot recovery' option, and then select the ROM from within recovery.
Sorry I can't be more help!

One last question:
When I downloaded the ROM from ROM Manager where did it store it? If I use Quickboot will it see the ROM I already downloaded in ROM Manager? The ROM that I downloaded was Fresh.
Sucks that I paid for it and it doesn't work.

I believe they are stored in /sdcard/clockworkmod/download.
Flipz's recovery will only look in the root of the sdcard for ROM zips. So you'll have to move it to the root.
And actually, now that I think about it, that may be your problem... The method you followed installed Flipz's recovery image, whereas ROM Manager was intended to be used with ClockworkMod's recovery image...
Maybe this thread will address your issue? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702214&highlight=clockworkmod

Its hard to say what you did wrong really. ROM Manager does everything for me just by clicking inside the app. The only time I had problems with it was because of the ROM.
It stores the downloaded files on your SDCARD under clockwork/download/
If you can get into recovery then flash from a zip and flash the fresh rom and try rom manager again.
If you're fully rooted you can do this also.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702214
Like I said though the problems you're having could be your rom cause when I had a older rom it didnt work right either..When I switched to the newer ones like fresh it worked fine.
with rom manager i can backup/restore try new roms in a matter of minutes and it does the work for me.

I'm taking the easy way out. I found the ROM, moved it to root of SD, flashed from zip. I'll work on flashing the correct recovery tomorrow. This is crazy but I'll eventually get it down. Thanks for your patience both of you. PM me CENT & DSL I'll send you a Google Voice invite if you need one.

Already have a GV account, but I sincerely appreciate the offer!
This is what it's all about man; Testing, tinkering, and learning!
Personally, for what it's worth, I keep it simple and download the ROMs myself and flash them myself. Let's be honest, flashing ROMs can turn your $500 phone in to a shiny paperweight. I don't like having extra steps, and relying on a middle-man application that could possibly have a bug in it and result in a dead device. I'm not saying it's not a proven reliable method for flashing, I just personally don't want to rely on a piece of software when I can do it myself.
And you're learning, you've asked questions, gotten answers, and now have a rooted device and are already flashing ROMs in a day or two. Keep it up man!

I'm good here to thanks..
I normally download the rom on my own end to avoid any corruption but use the program for everything else.

Just woke up and looked at my Evo. The phone just keeps rebooting at that Sprint 4G animation. It won't boot up at all. I can still get it in Recovery mode. What do I do?

you probably didnt wipe your cache..do that and reflash

Ok weird fix. I'm sorry I'm being such a pest by the way but anyway I fixed it!!
I did some searching on google for infinite reboot because it would keep playing that 4G splash screen over and over. I did a hard reset on the phone and all of a sudden it turned back on and I see my new ROM!!
The crazy part is that after I hard reset I'm able to use Clock recovery and I don't seem to have that bug that everyone else seems to have. I even updated to the new version of fresh's rom from within ROM Manager and it worked perfectly.
Thanks guys for the help.

[Q] Concern before continuing install of custom ROM....

Alrighty..... I've read / had open the posts regarding ADB, Unrooting, Nandroid, etc multiple times, and I want to make sure things are OK / voice some concerns before I continue.
I've installed the USB drivers needed (installed those only, did NOT install the rest of the components).
Ran SDK setup, edited the android_winusb.inf (have original as .bak)
Had USB Debugging enabled
Confirmed Android Phone listed in Dev. Manager as Android Bootloader Interface
Ran UnrEVOked3 reflash tool, without difficulty, and phone finished in koush clockworkmod recovery, and rebooted.
Used Nandroid Backup to backup to SD card, later confirmed via exploring SD card for confirmation with observing clockworkmod folder. Afterwards, reset back to "Charge Only"
At this point, I wanted to confirm root, and using ADB shell in command prompt typed in at $ su and was rewarded with the response of su / Permission denied / $.
A bit concerned, I rebooted the phone, everything works (well, I don't directly observe any issues, can make / receive calls, texts, etc).
Under "Software Information" I see:
Firmware Version: 2.1-update!
Baseband version: 1.00.03.04.06
I'm very much aware that I need to update the radio, plan on using unrEVOked Forever. I have the option to use Clockworkmod "apply sdcard:update.zip" next.
I'm wanting to make sure things are "OK" and the phone is sucessfully "rooted" before I carry on.
I have no doubt this is the "umteenth" thread, but it's my first "smartphone", and my first time doing this, so please be gentle, it really is my first time
Thanks for any time on this, and posted responses.
If you got permission denied when running su in adb shell the your root didnt go correctly. It should of just dropped you to a # prompt. When you typed su did you then go to your phone and get the popup by superuser asking if you allow or deny? Did you select allow?
while in adb and typing su it should look like this
Code:
$su
#
I never got the option, or I didn't see it. ::Confirmed::, I still get the $ after typing in su
Another question: Should I install the packages listed in the SDK update as well? I have 2.2, API 8, revision 2, 2.1-update1, API 7, revision 2, and 1.6 listed, and 2.1-update1 is listed as my latest firmware
**Update** Via unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:adb_in_recovery, I see device listed with (recovery) next to it. I presume with the 3 files listed to download, I place them in the root of my SD card?
I think that $ is normal on the stock rom with the phone booted up. Your nand is still locked because you haven't done the unrevoked forever, yet. Boot into recovery and do it and you should get the # root prompt. Sounds like you're on the right track.
Typed on my Incredible phone!
Last question (I think)....
I'm assuming that I rename unrevoked-forever.zip to update.zip, and thats the file that I place in the in the root of my SD card, reboot into recovery and select apply update?
#
The update can be installed like any custom .zip file. Simply flash it from your custom recovery. Both Amon_RA and Clockworkmod Recoveries support custom .zip installs from the sdcard.
#
Either select the option to install a .zip from your SD card, or apply it as an update.zip as follows:
#
Place the update.zip file into the root of your SD card. You can do this with adb with the command: adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/update.zip
I have a feeling I'm misunderstanding some part of that, but I want to make sure before I finalize this.
Does this look good for a final step?
***Update****
Applied Forever Patch, no issues what so ever. Phone loads back to previous states, now I get the # after su request in shell.
I"m still seeing a Baseband Version of: 1.0.03.04.06. The next step is to update the radio, then off to a custom ROM of my choice?

Correct. Be sure to do a nandroid before you do each thing. I know it sounds silly and like a lot of backing up, but you'll be glad you've got it if something goes wrong. You can almost always get back to good with a nandroid backup.
Isnt that the truth
Takes 5 minutes to backup, and 5 seconds to break lol. NANDROID
I have not had a chance to flash the radio / install a custom ROM, but everything works!
Big thanks for the support / guidance through this!
Next question, obviously asked in several previous threads, but I'm unable to resolve the next issue at hand with that data.
When I power on, and hit hboot, I'm still seeing S-On, yet if I log into abb shell, su, I get "#", as well as now having the icon for "Superuser Permissions".
I've attempted to install the radio update "PB31IMG.zip" via root of SD card. I'm able to see / install it, yet baseband is still showing 1.00.03.04.06.
I have W7, and have the option to "Hide extensions for known file types" off (Can't stand not seeing exactly what files are what).
What am I missing? I've seen that others have had to do the "*22899 then *228 option 2", yet If it doesn't show it as being a valid install, I'm hesitant to try and reinstall it
****Edit**** If this is the case, then I will wear the obligitory "dunce" cap for a bit.... Do I need to rename PB31... to update, the port over to root of SD and install then select "apply sdcard:update.zip"?

Getting Started [Update 12/23 - OTA Update Install fix for root]

[Update 12/23] For those of you unable to install the new system update, I've found a solution -- scroll down to the update! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY OCCUR!
So I figured I'd at least get things started - Credit goes to whomever first tried z4root on their Droid Pro - and to mahst687 for the deodexing.
Lets Begin!
Resources:
Motorola ADB Driver
Android SDK
xUltimate V2.2.2
(Can't post links apparently, sorry -- googles your friend!)
#1 Root:
As seen on numerous android sites already, root is obtainable via z4root in the market. It may not work the first, second, or even third time -- just keep trying, it works I promise.
#2 Bootstrap and Clockwork Recovery
Download and install 'Rom Manager' from the Market. Once installed flash the Droid2 Clockwork Recovery. After flashing, obtain the Droid2 Bootstrapper and install it. Confirm Clockwork Recovery works by booting to recovery via Bootstrap.
#2 Deodex:
Download Android SDK for ADB, as well as the Motorola ADB Drivers posted above. Second, download xUltimate - also posted above. Once everything is downloaded and installed we're ready to begin.
1. Run Main in the xUltimate package - if the ADB drivers installed successfully you should be greeted with a menu containing several options - great!
2. Next run option 1.
3. Run option 2.
3. Run option 3 - sit back and relax for a bit
4. Once option 3 is done doing its thing, navigate to the xUltimate folder, more specifically the "origi_frame", and delete guava.odex
5. Run option 4 - it'll be a short wait
6. Exit the xUltimate
7. Enable USB Mass Storage on the phone and transfer both "done_app", and "done_frame" to the ROOT of the SD card.
8. Once both folders have transferred disable USB Storage, but keep the phone plugged in via USB.
9. Open up a command prompt and browse to the android SDK Tools folder (or where ever your ADB executable is located).
10. Enter the following commands:
Code:
adb shell
su
stop
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/done_app/* /system/app/
cp /sdcard/done_frame/* /system/framework/
rm /system/app/*.odex
rm /system/framework/*.odex
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
reboot
11. If all went well your phone should reboot - which may take a few minutes. Enjoy!
[Update]12/23/2010
For those of you unable to get the new Droid Pro OTA working I have found a solution! You will need:
1)Root
2)Clockwork Recovery
3)System.img from update
4)Current Nandroid backup of your phone
5)ADB drivers and ASDK
So lets begin.
1)Boot into Clockwork recovery and create a backup of your phone.
2)Once complete, mount the phone as USB storage and pull the system.img file from the nandroid backup folder, as well as the nandroid.md5 (KEEP THESE FILES SAFE!!!!!)
3)Obtain the system.img file from here (Compliments of whoopsiedaisy).
4)Replace the system.img file in the Nandroid backup folder on your PHONE.
5)ADB into your phone (preferably still in recovery) and do the following:
Code:
adb shell
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-xx-xx.xx.xx.xx
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
6)If all goes will it should create a new MD5 checksum file utilizing the new system.img
7)Go to the 'backup and restore' menu in Clockwork, and select 'Advanced Restore'
8)Select the correct nandroid backup folder where the new system.img file is located, and then select 'Restore System'
9)Assuming all goes well, go to Settings, About and check your new system version!
Nice, can't wait to try this on my wifes phone after work.

Not at all. Simply run z4 if all you require is root access (and a host of apps like Wireless Tether, DroCap, Titanium Backup ...)
Can you please post the quickoffice apk from the Dpro so I can put on an DX? Same would go for the software that allows me to Invite attendees to meetings using GAL. It be copasetic if you can.
Thanks a ton! Freaking worked flawlessly on my Droid X.
Nate
Cool. Cant wait to try this on my wife's phone.
I downloaded everything you said and i started my deodex but when i select option 3 in main it tells me "error no odex file" have i done something wrong please advise
Is it really that simple?
I feel like I must be missing something. I just download an app from the market and reboot and I'm rooted?
Also, what is the deodex for? I want to root my phone to install the apps I want and I want wifi tether. Do I need it?
Also, I really want to understand what is going on under the hood, but I don't know where to start. Is there a 'for dummies' tutorial somewhere that I can go to to start understanding what all of this stuff is, so I can make informed decisions for myself about what I want instead of begging for help on internet forums? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Is there a way to unroot? I am not rooted but just curious.

Yes, Z4Root app allows you to root, re-root, and UNroot.
I see no uproot button on the screen. Only a root button

You'll only see the unroot button once you've rooted. Otherwise, it will first show only the "root" option.

I was rooted. I had titanium installed and superuser. Z4 ran fine but I had an old version of it. I dont know if that matters but thats all I did. I downloaded the 1.3 version and I now have the unroot button. On the old version there was no option for temp root either. Just root. On the version I have now there is a temp root and perm root button.
Would just like to let people know that your method for "updating" via nandroid backup would not work for me. Followed all the instructions to the letter and during the advanced restore I continually received md5sum mismatch errors.
So I took the chance and updated through the OTA update, it installed fine but lost root. Ran z4root (twice) and gained root access again .
Looking forward to some real custom daily driver roms for this guy.

Kinda new to the whole rooting thing, just got a new Pro and rooted successfully with z4root, got rid of bloatware and installed titanium backup, wifi tether, etc. Am I correct in reading your post that I can unroot, OTA update, and re-root again? If so, will I have to uninstall bloatware again, or reinstall root apps? Or any other repeats? Any danger in doing this?

No need to un-root. This update is for the system portion only and does not touch the userdata. I simply went ahead on the rooted phone, let the OTA update download and install. In doing so lost root, but had no trouble gaining root access again via z4root. Did not have to re-remove any of the bloatware, at least if I remember correctly. Root apps will not need to be reinstalled but you may need to re-give them permission for root access. No danger that I have noticed or can think of.
For anyone doing the update the android method....
For it to work
You must do the adb "new" md5 creation portion with your phone in clockwork recovery for it to work and to not receive the mismatch error...
To do this, reboot recovery... then plug in usb from your computer... during the phone boot into recovery you should hear the alert from your computer that something from usb was plugged in. Finally, use the mount option in recovery to mount sd card to be able to transfer the .img file over to the correct directory then unmount sd card and do the adb commands in terminal window...
I had the same mismatch errors using my windows 7 machine and creating the md5 with android booted
Hope this helps

Confirmed working on a phone donated just for this purpose!
Started with stock firmware, Android 2.2.1, baseband VM670ZV4_60401001, generic android recovery
Flashed the VirginMobile Security Update from their website, became VM670ZV9_60401001 ZV9.479A6632
Manually walked through above script by jcase via gtalk, and using the exploit, was able to flash BobZhome's CWM for the VM670, reboot into it and made a backup.
Flashed the su zip, and all is well in Optimus V land again.
HUGE THANKS TO JCASE FOR TAKING THE TIME TO RE-ROOT THE VM670!!!

Hey! Sorry, I'm a ET4G user, just trying to put ICS on my girl's phone so she stops whining
Anyways, I presume there's an update being pushed to all optimus v's? If so would you happen to know how I could update hers? Or would it be easier to stay on the current version ( i belive v5???) and root a different way??
Also, great work on an exploit so soon after a release! Happy to join (kinda) the Optimus family!

The update is not being pushed, because the OTA mechanism doesn't work on the OV. You have to go to the VM website and download the update from the phone FAQ.
The only advantage is a new radio, which give slightly improved performance.
Thank you very much!
I installed the update to my (unmodded) backup phone without thinking about whether or not I'd be able to root the handset after applying it. DOH!
I have just been using this phone as a WiFi device so far. I have run the battery down and recharged it once and installed a few apps on it. So I will run it down, recharge it again and then do a factory reset before I try rooting it just to make sure that I don't hose it.
It's a good idea to check all the steps before you start ...
Finally ran my battery down for the second time. So, I recharged, ran a factory re-set and ran the shell script on my Linux box to root the phone.
Oops!
The file VM670NH_recovery.img downloaded as VM670NH_recovery.bin and the system can't find/stat it! Hit ^C and bailed!
Hoping, hoping, hoping ...
Good! It's not bricked!
Renamed the recovery file, re-ran the script. Success!!
Rebooted into recovery, flashed rootme.zip
==> Did a nandroid backup.
Downloaded root check basic app and confirmed that it has worked.
So, for other modders trying this out:
Check your files and file names before you start! When I looked at Gordita.sh the first time I found that what I had downloaded was an HTML file with the script embedded in it. Copied and pasted from the OP and then checked again to make sure I had the right content.
Of course if you are running the adb commands manually then this won't happen to you.
But, as I noted above, I didn't cross-check that the recovery file that the script would be looking for had the right file name extension (.img, not .bin), so don't be me.
That said, jcase: Thank You Very Much!! Not only for developing this root exploit but also for making one that is robust enough for someone like me to goober it up and still come out unburnt!

Once I rooted my phone I installed a modified ROM. And then another one, and then ...
I saw your question a bit ago and since I no longer had the stock ROM installed (and had never used Quick Settings to enable the hotspot feature before) I didn't know. I still don't. Here is the story on that ...
I just restored the ZV9 ROM from backup today and then installed the Quick Settings app. I can say that the app still has the option to enable the hotspot available and that it tries to set it up. However the phone I am using hasn't been activated yet and the 3G network isn't provisioned on it. So all I get is a message saying the network isn't available.
So, it looks somewhat promising. Maybe someone who has an activated phone with the ZV9 ROM can test it out and let you know.
And if I activate this phone before you get a useful reply I'll test it to see if it works.
So happy to see this

Software Update Loop Bricked FireTV

OK here is the story
FireTV 51.1.0.2_user_510058520 2 days old
Rooted and installed busybox everything was fine. So I figured I wanted the latest Rootable version.
Followed this guide (http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-manually-upgrade-or-downgrade-the-amazon-fire-tv/ )
Problems started here: at the end trying to push update.zip to cache got error "cannot stat ‘update.zip’: no such file or directory"
update.zip was in same directory as adb
So I went and Installed Clockworkmod Recovery and pushed it using "adbfire" since it can push files to /sdcard (used this other guide http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-clockworkmod-custom-recovery-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/)
Went and rebooted into clockworkmod and that's when I saw the Previous command running trying to install update.zip wich was not there cuz I was never able to push it in the first place.
Well I could not get out of there by any means since I don't have a USB keyboard with me anymore
well I pushed the update.zip to /sdcard (again using adbfire) and used the mv command to transfer the file to /cache aaaaaaand reboot
Now I have my android logo updating the firmware and rebooting the FireTV when reaching the middle of the process just to start again and again
note: I can still connect to my firetv via adb while the screen is on and lose connection when reboots.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

Well you can do
Code:
adb reboot recovery
to get to recovery, Then in one window run
Code:
adb shell
and in then run
Code:
/sbin/recovery-input
and then in another window run adb shell again and this time run killall recovery. Then you can use recovery-input to control recovery. I would recommend pushing one of the prerooted updates, flashing it, doing a factory reset, then reboot and it should be fine. Another option is to use adb sideload.

First thanks for your quick reply
the thing is my current state is Recovery looping while the firetv tries to install the new software so what I see is
Amazon logo
Android logo updating but just the blue bar filling
then shuts down
then android logo again and again
the commands you recommended were adb reboot recovery ----> /sbin/sh: not found
adb shell ---->/sbin/sh: not found
/sbin/recovery-input ----> Welcome to recovery input (this one works but I'm not quite where I need to be to control anything)
killall recovery ----> This command just reboots again into the same state
You also mentioned adb sideload but that's after I regain control of recovery right???
Please let me know other options to get out of this loop
Thanks again

If recovery is still in some kind of a loop, doing rm /cache/recovery/* while in adb shell should clear that up.

I tried rm /cache/recovery/* and I think it erases that folder cuz when trying to run same command again it states as no such file or directory but then I wait and reboots again into same loop
again ran killall recovery and nothing reboot again looping T_T

I dunno. Recovery shouldn't be doing any looping... With an empty /cache/recovery it should just sit there and do nothing. And it makes it more difficult without a usb keyboard.

Well yesterday I couldn't bring the keyboard but now I have it in front of me but I haven't been able to reproduce the recovery mode with the keyboard combination.
I know it works because the firetv reboots but sometimes goes to the initial amazon logo and sometimes just the same updating android logo
So any suggestions now that we have the keyboard here???
OK I finally figured it out.
All started when I ran the command "echo --update_package=/cache/update.zip > command" to update to a stock ROM but was never able to PUSH the actual file... kept getting error "cannot stat ‘update.zip’: no such file or directory"
THEN
I successfully installed Clockworkmod Recovery (luckily) and when rebooted to recovery I was presented with Clockwmod Recovery asking if sure to install the NON PRESENT "rom.zip"
BUT i didn't have a keyboard with me at that moment and didn't know the "control recovery" command either... SO I thought to find a different way to PUSH the file....
So I used push file function in adbfire to get the file into /sdcard/ and the the mv command to get it to /cache
SO I got my problem right there wich I was able to reproduce today: When you connect to adb during recovery or booting the FireTV you will get this error for most commands including su ----> "/sbin/sh: not found"
NOW if you try to push a file it will say it got pushed but only half of it or some shortcut of it I'm not sure
The thing is with that half pushed file the system now obeys "echo --update_package=/cache/update.zip > command" and starts updating and shuts down reboots and update again, whatever you do it keeps on booting again to the same state(trust me nothing works)
What I did basically with the few seconds I got between reboots I ran "rm -f /cache/*.bin" and rm -f /cache/*.zip to erase all cache folder and then I was again asked to install the file (not there again) and disabled recovery flash
Anyways thanks for all the replys I got really appreciated all your help and keep up the good work ppl I hope this helps someone out there besides me.
I'm now running the latest prerooted rom from rbox thanks again for that
have a good one
question: Is there an actual gui windows app to transfer files to FireTV???
2: Do I need to block updates for this custom rom also or that's already implemented?
The pre-rooted ROM blocks updates. You can check using TiBU. I think three files are frozen.
Glad you pulled out of your crash.

It doesn't. But if you had dcp blocked before installing it, it'll remain blocked. You should always have dcp blocked.

I did do the PM disable thing but thought your rooted ROM would undo it. Guess not. Anyway, I'm happy. Thanks.
Think I bricked mine
Just got my firetv and did the usual ie. rooted, su added , then I Installed Clockworkmod Recovery and tried to upgrade to the latest rootable firmware, using update.zip to /cache and then it just keeps rebooting.
No amazon screen, goes to Andriod loads 1/3 of the way andf reboots, over and over.
picture attached
Cant adb to it , when doing the alt+print screen+i with my keyboard just reboots it faster
Think i'm offically bricked and its a bummer , be careful when changing firmware with CWR and sending your update.zip .
I dont know where it went wrong but it did

Don't use update.zip and don't put it in /cache. Since so many people seem to be screwing up by doing that, I'm going to disable the automatic flashing in the next version. As for not being able to adb to it, it's probably using a different ip than what you are expecting. In every instance of people doing this, adb has always worked. Then just rm whatever you put in /cache. Next time use sideload or put it in /sdcard.

I send the update.zip to the ftv with Amazon FireTV Utility App and it looked like it went all the way through , by default isnt that where it send it to ? /cache
Ive been trying to ping the ip , or shell to it but how much times could I have when it just keeps cycling. I dont think its possible to adb to it at this point as I get the attached screen for like 10 seconds or something it will just hold at the all white amazon logo if i'm screwing around with the keyboard combantions , i'm just stuck at this point and dont wanna keep burning hours if i cant go further.
I'm assuming its trying to load whatever is in the /cache folder which is either nothing or ave an update.zip file no idea
thanks for the reply as i will try some more to adb in
I am in a similar boat. I tried to install "rom.zip" per the instructions here http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-a-custom-rom-image-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
but it would not install it from CWM. It would abort the installation instantly. I read another thread where someone wasn't able to do something through ADB Shell because of SU permissions. I tried to uninstalled it and sideloaded SuperSU again. When I accessed it instead of clicking on "Normal" I chose the other option. Well, it's not stuck in the same loop as mentioned here.
I see the Amazon logo briefly, then it shows the android logo and reboots. It disconnects for a few seconds with the TV saying there is no HDMI connection and then shows the amazon logo shortly after again. I can no longer ADB into it.
Please help.

Hey your problem is really similar to mine and what I did was connect to adb in between the loops and erase all cache
try searching on your router or do a scan on your network and find the correct ip address for the firetv
also don't worry about not being able to SU just erase cache using "rm -f /cache/*.bin" and "rm -f /cache/*.zip"
then it will ask for the actual file and just choose "not to install" then "disable recovery flash"
pd: Don't try to enter recovery by keyboard combinations it's useless trust me I tried A LOT

Question Help with bootloop after editing settings file

Hey folks,
Last night I was editing a file located under "data/system/users/0/settings_ssaid.xml" and upon rebooting my phone, it's been stuck in a boot loop. I have an original copy saved in a different folder, but unable to access anything to replace it.
Is there any specific fastboot command I can run to swap the files (adb push, pull etc)? Only boot slot A is giving me an issue, and I was reading flashing system.img would be able to help, but I don't wanna do anything I'm unsure will wipe any of my data where I'd have to start over unless I've recovered some of that data first.
If I do have to flash any stock images, pls post the instructions for clarity.
Thanks in advance.
Assuming adb can actually access your device, while it's stuck in a boot loop (test this by running 'adb devices' and see if you receive a response)
You can run the following command to list all the files in your specific folder.
adb shell ls FILEPATH
Every file in your specific folder will be listed. You can then do the following to pull/push your file
adb pull FILEPATH
adb push FILENAME FILEPATH
Of course you need to place the file that you want to push in your ADB folder.
Mind though, that simply replacing your edited file with the backup might not solve your bootloop.
You can always look up available commands here
adb shell ls - Android ADB Shell Commands Manual

Yes, I can access adb and my device while it's booting up, but once it reboots I lose connection. Unless I can interrupt the process I'd have to be very quick in my typing to copy files lol.
Even with the few seconds I have to type some commands to access the directory of the file I edited, I do get a permission denied error.
Would swapping to Slot B during boot allow me into the system, or even flashing the system.img file?

No because your file is on /data.
The issue is that you can't push your file to /scard since (I guess) you can't even get beyond to the point where /sdcard is mounted.
So copying it from /sdcard will likely be too late in the boot process.
Pushing directly into /data does not work either as you would have to be root. In the old days you could run and in root mode but I'm not sure that is still possible.
Factory reset will work.
On devices with separate recovery partition it would be possible to change recovery to allow adb access to /data so then push old file via recovery... But I would not know how to do that on Pixel as recovery is s part of the boot partition.
So effectively, it's likely you're only solution is to do a full firmware flash along with wipe.
I would first try a full flash removing the -w to avoid the wipe. It may work.

Ok, I'm rooted so to be sure I don't mess anything up, lol can you list the steps just as a precaution?
Obviously I'd be in fastboot / recovery mode, then perform a flash-all but remove the -w so as to not erase my data?
Once the system boots, all of my texts and setup should remain as is, or do I have to go and recover it?
Would I be able to install the OS again on the inactive slot to recover data, or does that not work that way?

Nope ... there is only 1 data partition, so even when you flash the OS to the inactive slot, it would still use the same data partition. Moreover, it is then likely to upgrade/convert some files on /data which might result in not being able to go to the previous version in the old slot.

See https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...thout-wiping-data-and-retaining-root.4356065/
so, unfortunately doing a full flash without wiping data didn't work. I'm almost inclined to believe that if TWRP was available for the P6/P, that I could go and push the file I had saved back into the directory of where it was and save myself from this mess.
I'm kicking myself because I'm usually backing up my data before I modify any system files, but this one time I hadn't done so and I had Google's backup turned off at the time, so I'm gonna have to lose some text messages over the last few days with some folks I enjoy speaking to. I do have some saved from late last week, but nothing from the weekend up until now.
As you said you can access ADB while booting, why not push/remove/replace the file while booting, even if this takes multiple boots to perform all commands, it should work assuming you can also use SU, if you can't, none of the below will work.
Code:
adb push <backup file location> /sdcard
adb shell
su
rm data/system/users/0/settings_ssaid.xml
cp /sdcard/settings_ssaid.xml /data/system/users/0/
chmod 600 data/system/users/0/settings_ssaid.xml
I don't know why it's affecting your boot though, there's a .fallback file that the system should fall back to when the system notes that this file is corrupt.
If the above doesn't work, and you could try:
Code:
adb shell
su
rm data/system/users/0/settings_ssaid.xml
cp /data/system/users/0/settings_ssaid.xml.fallback /data/system/users/0/settings_ssaid.xml
If that doesn't work, try:
Code:
adb shell
su
rm data/system/users/0/settings_ssaid.xml
And reboot, but again, I don't know why you're bootlooping from this, that file shouldn't be integral to booting.
Also, if you need to back up your data, why not just boot to boot_b, if it's not causing you issues? You really shouldn't have to reset your device to fix one problem - you could do a /data & /sdcard pull while booted to boot_b, or just run something like Titanium & SMS backup/restore.

I appreciate the help but I can't go back as I've already wiped everything minutes before you sent this. If I had the above commands sooner I would have loved to try, although I'm not really sure why this became an issue in the first place. I tried booting to slot B, using both patched and normal boot images but it wasn't working, unless I did something wrong.
All I remember is installing an app to edit UDID for individual apps that I've used in the past, but because it wasn't identifying root properly, to which I'm assuming is an Android 12 issue, I decided to follow instructions for manually editing such IDs in the file I edited in my OP.
After I rebooted, I remember the main system about to start and seeing the Google boot logo with a percentage # go all the way up to 90%, then that's where the boot loop started. My guess at this point is either the app or the file I edited caused an issue, because I did nothing else up until that point. What's odd, is that after I formatted the whole system and rebooted, I saw the same percentage appear on screen after installing the same app to see if that was the issue, but it booted fully just fine.
I was going to just keep fighting this and keep the phone the way it was until I could maybe fix everything, but figured there's nothing I could do at this point since trying a flash of everything failed. I was up until 5am last night and it's almost 4 am with me trying to fix this. I feel defeated and upset because I don't believe I had to wipe this in the first place, and could have likely saved all of my data. I didn't have Google's backup option turned on and hadn't backed up my text messages because I was dumb. I'm more upset with myself than the phone honestly.

Ah damn, I was too late!
The 90% thing sounds like the November Google Play services updated - mine updated yesterday and I got the same thing when I rebooted, maybe something between the two got corrupt.
Yeah, I get that, I've had more than my fair share of self inflicted (and not so self inflicted) problems that have lost me data but you live and you learn I suppose
