Weather location - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here's my question: Why are my 3rd party weather apps (beautiful home, weather & flip clock) able to locate the city I'm in, but the HTC widget always switches between 2 cities about 15-17 miles away. EVERY once in a while it will show my city, but only for a very short time.

I have found the exact same thing. I ditched HTC clock for Beautiful Home, much more skinnable and really no loss of functionality other than inability to swype through several pre-determined locations. I'll give that up for more accurate locations though.

HTC weather widget locations

Moved up from G2 to Desire yesterday and was trying to replicate how I had my G2 (and liked it). I noticed straight away that the weather widget from HTC is now limited to purely locations pre installed on the Desire.
On the G2 you could pick your "current" location where it would open google maps and you could if you wanted you zoom & scroll to your "desired" (no pun intended) location & pick virtually anywhere on the globe and use that.
Just wondering why on the updated UE with more advanced ROM I can't do this?? So my question is to those who know alot more about the backend of these apps/phones, can the location data I have created on my G2 be located easily enough and possibly moved over to my desire??
Thanks
From the manual.
If you consented to turn location service on when you were setting up your phone for the first time, you’ll see the weather of your current location right on the HTC Clock widget of your Home screen.
You can also use the Weather application to check the current weather and weather forecasts for the next four days of the week. In addition to your current location’s weather, this application also displays the weather forecasts of other cities around the globe.
If you declined to turn location service on during first-time setup of your phone, turn location service on in your phone’s settings so that you’ll be able to check your current location’s weather on the HTC Clock widget, Weather application, and the Weather widget. Press HOME > MENU, tap Settings > Location, and then select the Use wireless networks check box.
Location services are on and it works as described for the "current" location. My question was with regard to other user defined locations, which I could do with the previous version of the widget on the android OS on my G2.
This way I can check the weather say at a destination later in the day which isn't contained within the database within the handset.
Is this what you are looking for, although it sounds as though you are limited to the cities listed on the hand set.
Adding a city to the Weather screen
Add more cities to the Weather screen so you can instantly check the weather forecasts in these cities. In addition to your current location, the Weather screen can display up to 15 cities.
1.Press HOME, and then tap Weather.
2.On the Weather screen, tap +.
3.Enter the location you want to add on the text field. As you enter text, the list is filtered to show the possible locations based on the letters you entered.
4.Tap the desired city to select it.
It annoys me that they still don't let it access the weather service online and use your location from there as my location is still no there it was the same with the hero i had.
The locations you can add aren't brilliant I have admit.
I was searching for Basingstoke (someone has to) and couldnt find it until I noticed it under 'Baskingstoke' !
I'm in Reading and it can't find any weather data, it's because we don't have weather here see. That's what it is.
I emailed them over this back when i had my htc hero like 6 months ago and still no fix to this issue.

I can get Reading OK on mine?
I have exactly the same problem, it wouldnt let me puck my own location...except the one picked by the phoneitself. For instance I live in bromley and when HTC set bromley as current location, there is no data available, however If I look for bromley myself and and add as a second location, the weather infor is available for that but the phone will not let me set that one as my current location.
sometimes the current location is unavailable for some reason, however if you add another city and use exactly the same location as for current location it will work fine and then you can set it as your default weather status
I like "Jabbypants" have emailed HTC as from what I can see it is a backward step not allowing us to use the map to pinpoint locations we want to know the weather for.
Maybe if enough email we may get a response?? Or somekind soul from HTC that reads these post will put up an "unofficial fix"??

I have tried that but it did not work..
I too had an oddity with the weather widget last night.
I'm in Leeds in the UK. That's the Leeds in Yorkshire, not in Kent. The weather widget only offers one Leeds, but doesn't state which one it is.
That seemed fair enough until last night. The weather for current location (Leeds) was different from the manually added city (Leeds also). I'm talking major difference - one said snow/rain with 2 degrees and the other said sunny at 8 degrees.
I'd like to figure out which Leeds is actually the one listed for manual selection. It obviously recognises both locations as showed the different weather for them both, but only lets you choose one manually.
Dae.
Edit. It's doing it again now. Leeds(current) shows 7 degrees, sunny and tomorrow (Monday) at 12 degree high with rain. Manually added Leeds shows current 8, cloudy with tomorrow being 11 degree high with Sun!!!
Well I have had a response from HTC, directly via email and via facebook.
Basically the "pinpoint" method employed on earlier android UE's has been removed due to a lack of customer trust. People didn't believe the weather it displayed for locations.
Email conversation is below
"Thank you for contacting HTC regarding the weather widget for your new Desire.
The Google map pinpointing technique you describe is no longer available. However, you can still find your location by doing the following:
- From the home screen, tap on Weather (or click menu and then Weather).
- Once in Weather, tap Menu. This will give you a keyboard so that you can type your preferred location.
I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required.
Kind regards"
I then tried a different tack
Thanks for the reply,
though the technique you describe
- From the home screen, tap on Weather (or click menu and then Weather).
- Once in Weather, tap Menu. This will give you a keyboard so that you can type your preferred location.
is flawed in that it is limited by the locations stored in the UE's database? I can't say for instance pick "Famagusta" in Cyprus as a location I want the weather for, as the UE only brings up Limassol or Nicosia in Cyprus (2 locations for a large island). I know that is a wide of the mark example, but I spend time there, though is is the same for most European countries.
Is there any way to expand the geographic database or do we have to wait for someone to hack it, like they did on Windows Mobile based devices such as the Diamond, where we could edit the database with locations from accuweather.com
Any further info would be most welcome as it has somewhat taken the shine off my progression from handset to handset (last 5 all HTC) which seemed to offer more to the consumer and be more customer orientated in that we could personalise them.
Many thanks
"Unfortunately, there is no way to expand the database. We cannot offer support regarding 3rd party applications, such as you describe. However, you are certainly free to investigate this avenue yourself.
We will feed back to HQ with your comments, but at this time, the locations in the list are the only ones available.
Kind regards,"
I'll be keeping an eye on any developments for this because I'd like it to be able to tell me the weather in Ipsos on Corfu. As it is, Corfu island is omitted altogether.
Anyone with this problem?
My current location displays Portugal instead of Lisbon.
My HTC Hero displayed my location correctly, local city detail instead of county detail.
The weather widget really annoys me. My location is not on the list and if I tell it to current location it knows where I am but says no weather data available. I can view the weather okay on accuweather.com so it's just the widget that won't show it for some reason.
I also asked :
I cannot set MY LOCATION manually. Strange, but I live in Bucharest which is the capital of the country and the weather program from Sense UI finds the city but in the HOME screen the weather it's different (not Bucharest). So my location it is not set manually, the GPS and google settings knows that I'm in Bucharest but the weather shown in HOME Screen it's not Bucharest - instead I have (I guess) Weather for Romania (no city , only Romania). Before writing this e-mail I did some research on the net and the user manual, and I find out that My location it is taken from network settings or something like that. This is not normal and it's very annoying. All I'm asking it's a way to set my location manually or a real automatic setting for this! Romania it's quite big you know ????? Thank you and I'm expecting your answer urgent! Kind regards!
This is what they answered:
Thank you for contacting us,
Regarding the issue you're facing, kindly be informed that if you disable the automatic location settings your location will be determined from the world clock that you can set manually but you will not receive any weather updates, you can try to use another SIM card from a different operator to check if this issue will persist or not, you can also try to searching the Android Market to check if there are any 3rd party applications that might help you with this issue.
Same issue here, weather for Paris works great, but I would like to add the small village where I spend my week-ends, and I can't find it in the database...
Looks like the cities are stored in an xml file, but I don't where to find it...

Weather app issue.

I have the stand htc weather app, i was one of the first to get the htc desire a fair number of weeks ago now, and i have been in birmingham uk for a while, with the weather app on the main screen ( the joint widget with the clock) fine.
However i recently came back to uni in Leicester, and the weather will not download, just say its unavailable. I can add Leicester as a location on he weather and that loads fine, but "under current location" weather tab will not load.
Any suggustions? I hope i explained myself clearly .

This ia a known issue. Try adding your city and then in the widget options pick that city instead of the current location and see if that works. You could also try downloading the Weather Bug app, its accurate and doesn't use as much battery power as the htc widget.
Thanks for advicing.
Basically i want to keep the main htc clock, with the weather app joint so when i unlock the phone i get the nice weather animations. However i cant see the htc clock on my widget list anymore so i cant add it or change settings etc..
I can add another seperate weather widget but looks ugly i think.
Hope htc get a fix soon!
A fix,
Just been fiddling about with the phone and found a fix for my problem.
You have to remove the htc clock, then go to add > widgets > clock (htc) > then click the clock with the weather > then you get settings of where you want weather to be from > add city> where you are.
This is ok if i dont move around much, which i do, so i just had to save this as a seperate profile, and i can swop profiles when i move around to make weatehr current location.
simple.
Hope this helps

Weather Widget

Is no longer detecting my current location.....it won't update (other cities are working fine). The banner int he Clock/Weather widget is empty and says "My Location" but nothing there.
any clues??
I've had similar over the last couple of months, also it showing 'United Kingdom' and weather info, rather than a specific place.
I did wonder (pure speculation alert!!) if they've been having problems with getting locations right - I've definitely had weather for somewhere of the same name as where I was, but with completely different weather conditions.
Not an actual example, but along the lines of showing 'Newcastle' and giving you the weather for Newcastle-Upon-Tyne or Newcastle-Under-Lyme but not knowing which one it should be (In the case of the Northern Newcastle it does display Newcastle-Upon-Tyne - which to me reinforces the idea that it does know and differentiate some similarly-named places.
have a problem with mine for a few weeks now it just gets stuck at my house's location.. when i get to uni it still thinks im at home :S and i cant get it to change.. it was working before..
i have the same problem. the "fix" in my case was to remove the weather widget and add it again.
I gave up after it stopped working for me months ago. Not using the HTC weather widget anymore but yr.no instead.
In program click on weather icon then Menu and select Rearrange
Drag ur current location on top position
To remove and put it back as new solved this in my case too..
Btw, Yr.no is the most reliable app (personal think as well), after a hard-reset, wanted to install it again from the market, but it was no longer available there(?) Does anybody know what has happened to it?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I talked to HTC hand the currentlocation is the nerest city not the palce your in like the function on HD2 Weather Widget. (cant understand why it shows the place if you add/remove it, but it will cahange back after a while to city again)
No updates will come from htc...!!!
So change app to snowstorm istead!

Newcastle upon Tyne is a good example, I work in Newcastle so I have My Location and "Newcastle-Upon-Tyne" (it shouldn't be hyphenated and upon shouldn't be capitlised!) and there are always a few degrees difference between the temperatures, it's very strange.
Mine did this a few months ago but sorted itself out after a while. It shows my current location as the town I am in and never has a problem updating when I move around

Tomorrow's weather shows crescent icon???

I just made the following simple experiment: created a weather icon using Meteor Weather Icons set and set it up to show "Tomorrow's weather". And for some unexplainable reason it shows a cresent particlaly covered by a cloud.
Why does it work that way?
AFAIK, weather icons that contain nighttime elements (like cresent) are supposed to be used by entries that show "Current Weather" during night hours only. Entries, which are set up to show weather for the entire day (like "Today's Weather", "Tomorrow's Weather", "2 Days Weather" and so on), are supposed to use generic weather icons only, independent from time of day (i.e. they shall never use nightime icons).
So, is it is bug in Zooper or is it a bug induced by a bad data from weather provider? And even if it is bad data from weather provider, why doesn't Zooper catch the error and filter it out on its side?
Its just how the config for the iconset is written.
Sent from GT-I9505 via Tapatalk
I've already contacted the developer for this reason.
The response was basically that this is how it should work...
Now I feel retarded...
Having zooper widget on your phone seemed like a good idea, it had so much potential, but now nothing happens and we're stuck with some things that make no sense.
It still has a ton of potential, but what's the point.
Just post the iconset and i will look into it.

Weather for the entire day
I have the same problem, I want entries which are set up to show weather for the entire day (like "Today's Weather", "Tomorrow's Weather", "2 Days Weather" and so on) use daily weather icons only, but that's not the way ZW works.
So I've renamed all night icons in my config file to their daily equivalents. The iconset is recognized and works, most of the time. But sometimes, after the widget updates, some icons dissapear (eg. tommorow's weather and 3 days weather), and some are still there. What to do? Here are original and my own iconsets

Accuweather

Is it possible to change the provider on the stock weather widget on the G4 from Accuweather to another one?
Accuweather gives a totally incorrect forecast 90% of the time in my case.
It's been saying all morning heavy cloud and to wrap up and its been sunny, blue skies and 22 deg for the last 2 hours.
Cheers
Have you tried changing the update interval in settings to 1 hour instead of the default 3?
Yes that was the 1st thing I did, I like the widget itself I just don't like AccuWeather as the provider but I can't see a setting how to swap it

How could this be possible, without having any option to select weather service providers? Stock weather app is very basic and is tied to Accuweather, as their services are default on all Samsung and LG devices, because it's official weather provider on these devices.
Whilst I am in agreement with OP, unfortunately Accuweather is the only service provider LG use as stock, it's all built into the smart notice etc. There's no way of changing it from the front end, and changing it back end in the code would be just messy. I tend to use Google Now for weather as it seems to be more accurate.
That's unfortunate. Thanks anyway. I'll just change to another weather/time widget that I can choose, and that is at least somewhat accurate.

There are some weather applications available on Google Play store, that allow you to switch between weather providers such Weather Timeline, and a few more. I've tested a few applications, and these weather providers are all you get to choose from: yahoo.com, yr.no, forecast.io, weather underground, openweathermap, world weather online. Most of these apps, gives you between two or three providers choice, but Weather Timline has max. no of providers. You can check them out.
