Only use it at night.....
Or turn the brightness up.

It's clearly visible to me in direct sunlight on a clear, sunny, 28 degrees C day above 67% brightness. I used it for navigation in car in such a state for 3 hours. But... my eyesight is still working sharp in both eyes.

I know the Desire screen don't have any problem in daylight.
If you can't see the screen in daylight use auto-brightness instead of low brightness so you can see the screen
I don't have a problem with my desire in the sun, it very visible. Try seting the brightness to auto.

Crack da' brightness!
I pulled my battery the second day I had my desire, I thought it had crashed but I just couldn't see the screen.
While the Desire's screen isn't great in daylight, it's never been so bad that I've been unable to type, make calls etc.
Watching a film or playing a game in broad daylight wouldn't be much fun, but as far as normal usage goes on sunny days, I've had no real problems.
The auto brightness feature isn't completely reliable in my experience. You could always use a brightness widget to set 100% brightness for outdoor use.
Maybe my eyesight is really bad... how do you turn on Auto brightness?

Maybe you don't have auto-brightness enabled or have a very low brightness - and yes, with little brightness you can't see a thing.
But i live in a very very sunny country, and with auto-brightness i don't have any problem with the Desire screen.
I don't have any problems with screen brightness on my desire. I leave it on auto and can sweetie perfectly well when outside too

I've found an anti-glare screen protector helps outdoors. I'm still not sure I like how it makes the screen look though.
Are there different screens out there : ???: I purposely used this phone in direct very hot sunlight and I could clearly see all that I needed to see... perhaps you have dodgy sunlight up your way?

I would suggest some kind of head torch.
It must be very dull where some of you live. The screen is not good in full sun.
And yes, I know how to turn the brightness to max.
After I turned on auto brightness, I found I didn't have an issue

i think it depends on your screen protector.
I think the users complaining mean this problem: http://images.anandtech.com/doci/3764/3430-9329.jpg (lower left screen)
And if you're in that situation with very strong, direct sunlight then your screen brightness is still below 25%.

I use the stock "power control" widget which is consisting of 5 different switchers including brightness to maximize brightness level when under daylight. However, when you use this, auto-brightness will no longer be in use (to enable it back you have to go to the settings manually). Alternatively, i use a 3rd party app called "brightness profiles" that is available in the market. With this app, I can use auto function whenever i want thanks to its shortcut (a nice widget) on my home screen, as well as various pre-determined brightness levels; low-normal-high-max, etc. You can add more profiles to existing three as default and customize them as per your desire i.e. adjust level and rename profiles. However, the main disadvantage of this nice prog is; when you use it in the lowest level profile, then switched from it to "auto", then -after a while- when you need to use it in max just because of you are under the sunlight, as soon as you unmark "auto" checkbox in the app window it will go to the lowest level since you have used it most recently. in this case, you just need to set to normal before activating "auto" via this app, at least until its dev solve this issue. Anyways, it is worth to give a try.

Hi Guys,
So I finally got the desire after being with an iPhone for the past 18 months. Lovely phone so far, even if it feels a little 'work in progress' in some depts.
Anyways!
Have any of you with the phone enabled auto brightness? Does it work? When I jump into the settings to enable it it seems to kick in (once i tick the auto brightness checkbox) but once I actually hit OK to save the changes the screen brightness shoots up again and then doesnt seem to react to ambient light.
weird.
I am running the t-mobile android (uk)
Yep, I have the same thing, glad it's not just me then!
I don't think I've seen it adjust by itself at all...
It works for me and I have seen it adjust.
im not sure really if it works because it always seems the same? i have changed it to 30% now which is just acceptable and we ll see if it gives any battery boost

That's the idea, auto brightness adjusts so that the screen looks the same brightness to your eye at any light level. When it's dark the brightness decreases and when it's light the brightness increases thus you see it as thee same due to the way your eye is already adjusted.

yeah Lol exactly, thats the whole point of auto screen adjustment. if you are indoors all (or most of) the time like me than keep it manual to 30-50%. otherwise leave it auto
Mine works a treat the only thing i do is when i go out the house i turn the brightness to manual and put it on full, as this is the only bad side to this phone the led does suffer in direct sun so full brightness is required.
I haven't seen any change in my screen brightness, whether in full sunlight or middle of the night in a dark room!
Is a bit annoying, would like to know if it can be fixed or we're waiting for the next firmware...
Where's the sensor ? With the Hero, placing a finger over the top part of the phone tricked the sensor but it doesn't seem to on the Desire. Interestingly though, there must be something there, the way the screen flashes up when you remove the phone from your ear

Works fine here
It seems that on my Desire the only time the automatic brightness actually tests the light is when I unlock my screen.
I can actually see the brightness change then, but if I switch lights on/off while it's already unlocked it doesn't automaticly adapt to the light.
I only checked it through the Android SDK using Dalvik Debug Monitor and the phone certainly did continuously check and correct screen brightness according to it. Visually, it was too difficult to discern what was happening and when due to my own visual limitations when the amount of light changed.

Been playing with my new phone and love it but man is the auto brightness a piece of crap. It sets the backlight so low you get weird banding on solid colors and off whites. Just turn brightness to 30% or so and boom its a whole different screen, colors pop and I don't notice any banding. Whites are great too.
They need to fix this fast since it comes with auto brightness on and its going to give people a bad impression.

That's the first thing I did.
auto-brightness is always a little too aggressive for my liking..
It was a problem with the Nexus S as well. Drove me nuts.
Seems AOSP roms are very aggressive with dimming.

known issue. Manufacturers tend to be really aggressive with this so you can get better battery life (yea I know.. pointless right?)
Just wait for custom ROMs. Or go download paulobrien's tweak for the automatic brightness settings. (of course, as others have said, you can just turn it off)
auto brightness has always sucked on Android, iOS has a customizable auto brightness that adjust to the level you put it on initially, where as on Android there's no option to adjust the default brightness when auto brightness is enabled.

Not just iOS, even my 3 year old Nokia allows you to adjust the level of auto brightness. Wish this is native to Android. I found my Nexus One too dim on auto brightness too.
Edit (deleted): redundant post about paulobriens fix
The auto-brightness doesn't just seem too low to me but also buggy. Most of the time it's really dim, but occasionally it will suddenly shoot up to a decent level
Has anyone tried this app? https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nnevod.loggraph&feature=search_result
I find it too bright.. the display is perfectly usable on minimum brightness in a normally lit room bit it keeps winding the brightness up, draining the battery. It seems stuck on about 50%.
My Nexus S did the same thing.. Drove me nuts. I had to switch it off and force it to minimum half the time.
Hopefully the ability to tweak the levels in detail will be ported over from CM7 later. For now, you can use PaulOBrien's kernel where he adjusted it.

Same here, with my Nexus S, too bright.
This is one of the first things I do when flashing a rom on my incredible. They usually have to ramp down the brightness very quickly, probably for battery life. Cm has the tool hopefully it will be loaded soon.

It would be nice if google added an option to set the max and min brightness used during auto. You could just raise floor a little.

Problem I've realized is on SAMOLED devices the screen is an absolute battery killer so there's no wonder they are aggressively keeping it dim. I bet if you ran this phone at 100% brightness just sitting idle it'd last like 10 mins
Has anyone noticed stock auto brightness is equal to the LOW setting? The only thing it does, whether it's a dark room or bright room is flip the brightness to LOW.

I agree that auto-brightness is too low. I manually set the brightness.
I agree the auto brightness is pretty low. However I like it, and it saves battery.

The auto brightness is to high for me too. In low light conditions if I turn off the auto setting I can force the screen lower.

I notice when the screen dims especially on auto dim that the screen flickers or strobes like the tail lights on cadillacs, I cant read any thing easily. The best way to see it is to quickly scan from the top of the screen to the bottom or vise versa in a dimly lit room, you will see a stepped image.
That's why I haven't used stock auto-brightness since my last HTC phone. I've used third party apps to control my brightness, since I had the original Note. Lux is my favorite. So much control over the brightness settings. You can control the lowest brightness setting the phone will hit in addition to numerous other variables. Works really well for me.
Mine works flawlessly. It usually is set at the lowest setting until needed to be boosted.
This gorgeous screen still suffers from being too damn bright in the dark! Needs a filter on it so your retinas don't burn in the dark.

I had to use lux auto brightness to lower mine it was very bright. You might want to use it to increase yours if it's low .
Hi guys,
Does anyone's screen tone change markedly when they take their tab out into the bright sunlight? The screen tone seems to change completely to a more washed out picture. You can actually see the screen change as you move from a lower light into a bright sunlight.
I notice that this only happens when the screen brightness is set to "auto". If you toggle auto on/off in the bright sunlight you can see the screen tone change.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is there any way of changing this behaviour on "auto brightness"? I like to leave my screen on auto brightness but not if the screen washes out...

Most likely it`s the Adaptive display set to Auto, you can manualy make your own selection in settings/device/display/screen mode.
Also try the auto adjust screen tone in the same screen mode section.

It happens irrespective of the screen mode (adaptive, basic etc)
It only happens when I'm outside in bright sunlight and display brightness is set to auto. If I turn off auto and set brightness to max it looks normal.
Have you seen this behaviour?

I dont use my 10.5" outdoors, phones/tablets are hard to see the screen outdoors so i dont bother, just answer calls on my phone nothing else.
You Tab will eat the battery outdoors as it will have the brightness set to 100% so you can see the display, try and find some cover/shade before using it.

I appreciate that you don't use your tablet outdoors and I also appreciate the advice on changing my lifestyle to suit my tablet use but I live in a country where we spend the majority of our days outside near pools in bright sunlight and I'd like to use my tablet in these conditions without losing screen quality & colours. I'm well aware the screen will consume more juice but that's why I've got a portable usb battery charger.
I am just asking if anyone else has noticed this behaviour...

I have seen this! Yes the colors are werid in sunlight. Its not what you normally see. This happens because of how samsung wants the screen to be visible in direct sunlight. Its like the max brightness amoled can go on auto. Meanwhile if you set it manually to the highest brightness, the colors are normal. Its a feature from samsung in which why it looks werid in direct sunlight on auto.
(Most amoled devices have this too like the S6. Putting the device in direct sunlight with auto brightness enabled maxes out the colors and brightness to live with the claim of how samsung says it can be seen in direct sunlight.)

I've seen a couple posts about delays with adaptive brightness, but this is a different item. I'm seeing that the adaptive brightness alters the brightness a little too dramatically. In a somewhat dark room (not pitch black) the brightness will be at absolute minimum even when the brightness is about 1/3 up on the slider. In a moderately bright room that same brightness setting will be near maximum.
Does anyone else notice this as an issue? I'm just wondering if it's normal (ie, software calibration issue) or if the brightness sensor might not be seated correctly.
It's normal. Or at least it sounds like it is working the same way mine is. And yes, IMO it is a little too sensitive. The Lux app works beautifully if you want an alternative. Also, the goog is known for tweaking this feature over time with updates.
I've noticed this too. The biggest thing for me is walking down the street at dusk (so not dark out yet) I can't read the screen as it turns it all the way down, then, when I walk under a street light, it turns it all the way up to full! It's one extreme or the other, there seems to be no middle ground.
In other words "adaptive brightness has mind of its own!"
This is why I have always kept this setting off. The brightness just changing on its own always annoyed me.
When it works properly (and it should) for ones uses, it's great, it's automatic, what's not to like? It's a pita to always have to change brightness manually just to see a phone display depending on ambient lighting which varies immensely for many users.

I agree. I have it set to maybe around 15-20% (centered over the WiFi symbol below it) and I never need to touch it. Gets dark enough for night driving and bright enough to read outside. Never found it stuck on one or the other when it shouldn't be.

If you buy the app Lux you can customize how it adapts your brightness. The free version is good to but you have to use mostly default settings. By default it only adapts brightness when the screen turns on.
