hi guys,
help needed please...
my desire shuts down at 15% battery, which is doing my head in! im out all day at work, and i need to use all the battery, not 85%!
i noticed another thread mentioning it but couldn't see a solution.. is there a setting i have to change or something?!
many thanks
Format battery.
Drain it completely down until phone won't start. Than charge it. I usually charge the phone when its off. Also you can find topic with battery calibration that should improve it in your case.

thanks for the reply,
i have previously done that calibration method, dont really see what it did to help though.
is format different or is that what you meant?
so does your android switch off at 15% to?
thanks
I have this issue once in few charges. Every time when I swap my sim cards with charger on after some time it happens. Than I discharge the phone and charge it while its off. Always helps. Usually turns off at 1-3%

ok, thanks
i will play fruit ninja all night long to run down my battery and charge while the phone is off, and see what tomorrow brings.
Umm. The Li-Ion batteries prefer lots of small charges instead of one time deal 0->100. And they dont like being run dead. Sure, theyre not completely dead when the phone shuts off but still.
Instead of trying some tricks to keep the % higher, find out whats using all your battery. The % doesn't matter, its how long the battery lasts, right?
yeah i agree, but however long the battery lasts i want to use it longer than 85% off it, its crazy that it shuts off at 15%!
right now im on jury service so need my phone to entertain me for 95%!
but this doesn't seem to be happening on everyone elses desire which makes it even more frustrating...
HTC Desire bad battery, how do i improve it?

trying this now, but any other?
Actually this article from androidcentral is really complete in terms of settings to reduce battery consumption:

You can also have a look at this one from howtogeek:

When battery drains a lot it is important to find the cause, in this case tools like systempanel are useful, but keep in mind that it is a good thing to stay away from task killers as explained on lifehacker [what are task killers and why you shouldn't use them]:

Hope this will help !
A bad battery is mainly due to either it being faulty or by a stupid amount of usage. Remember that using 7 home screens, live wallpaper, widgets, apps running in the background. All of this counts towards usage. I don't know about calibrating a battery. Some people say it works, some say it doesn't.
I did a little useless experiment the other day where I had my phone at 55% battery and I decided to see how much battery would be used over 24 hours with as little usage as possible. I managed to get 8% of the battery used using 2mA. Hope that puts something into perspective for you.
I tried CPU tuner on the stock ROM and it gave some life to my battery, but I've just flashed a new ROM recently, so hopefully it'll work better.

Can you clarify "as little usage as possible" to get that 8%? Do you mean like switching off everything, or simply not using the device but keeping all the apps as they were?
Can someone explain why my battery sheds the first 10 percent from full charge within a half hour or direct me to a post that could explain this?

From what I've read, there's a chip inside the OEM batteries (the ones sold by HTC and included with the Evo) that prevents the battery from maintaining a full charge. This is because maintaining a full charge can overheat and overvolt the battery and cause problems.
Thus, when you unplug, your battery drops to where the charge actually ends up when the chip stops the charge from destroying the battery.
We used to have SBC kernels that rectified this problem, but after a couple of idiots forgot the part where it says "this may harm your phone, use with caution" they went on a terror-filled witch hunt and had them all taken down.
So, until there's another way, you're stuck with that buddy. Best of luck.
this is one of the more discussed topics nowadyas, or more the fix is.
so, li-on batterys like the evo one, can be damadged/metallic plated by containing a full charge for an extended period of time. so, battery manufacturers made charginng cycles, so once the battery is full, the charger will fully turn off until it has reached 90, and then power back up again.
recently, ms(numbers i cant remember. confusing username) made sbc (superior battery charging) kernels, that trickle charged, so your phone would sit at 4.2mV and not cycle. there has been much controversy about these, including some finger pointing and borked batteries (mine has never been the same since using these, but i really dont want to blame ms########) have lead to most if not all links being removed from the xda. too bad.
Thanks for the info guys, I just flashed a different kernal and did some set CPU clocking tweaks that have made me over joyed but for now it seems that the first 10 percent will have to be sacrificed, before I rooted my phone I got almost 18 hours out of my batt using juice defender I'm hoping for similar or better scores but I can't complain too much with the performance now

Easiest way to fix the instant drain is to unplug your phone when it has a full charge. Let it drop to around 92 percent <---My personal preference or you can wait about fifteen minutes. Plug your phone back in and wait for the led to turn green and unplug it right after it turns green. BOOM! All problems solved!
Good humor man....
If your phone was at 100% for a period of time, you would feel more at ease about using it. That would bring about three things.
First increased network usage. Secondly increased phone position among its competitors because of one. Thirdly an increased consumption of batteries, since batteries are based on a chemical reaction which is limited by design. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand it. Go to a university chemistry department and they will point you in the right direction. No flashing of internet credentials.
So you want a solution? You can't handle a solution.
Why not give this a shot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701567

Some advice I can shed on this is having Wifi on all the time, (by all the time you mean at least 24/7), that could be a strong point why your battery life is low. Another thing is the number of apps that require data being pulled running in the background
1. Having Wifi on for the time you state is bad if you don't have a signal. Reason why is that since there is no signal for your Wifi to obtain it will continue to search and fail, search and fail which actually drains some good amount of battery being forced to repeat such a task unlike when having a steady signal it's usage becomes minimal
2. High number of data pulling apps also works the same except then have the option to change the time they pull data which can be usually found under settings/options tab
Try these out and let us know how it goes =]

Hmmmmm
I barely noticed that you are running a custom rom. After flashing the new rom did you wipe battery stats? If not, that can actually affect battery life as all roms run differently and different data is applied to the battery stat
There are two ways to go about wiping the stats. You can boot into recovery and Wipe Dalvik Cache under the advanced settings or you can download Battery Calibration from the marketplace which in my experience is a lot easier
Battery Calibration
The instructions are inside the app on how to implement the process
I had this rom for a while but when I flashed it, I did not wipe data or anything. I decided to wipe data to give it a try and reflashed it. I charged it completely and calibrated it. I am in the process of running the battery until it dies so I can recharge it to complete the calibration process.

DO NOT drain the battery until it dies!!! Just down to 15-20%, then charge to full, repeat a couple times. Over-discharge is not good for Li ion batteries.
People on here keep recommending it, or saying they do it. Its NOT a good idea, and proliferating this bad advice needs to stop. Draining the battery to dead is bad for the life of the battery. Also over-discharge can possibly render the battery unable to take a charge, requiring you to buy a new battery. It doesn't happen often, but its happened to a few different people on this phone, and other phones as well.

You seem to know a lot so i'm gonna ask ya redpoint. People say there is a built in safety zone so even when the battery is reporting as 0 it really isn't. The batteries do not allow themselves to get below a certain threshold for the reason you are explaining. Is this not true? Lots of people who know nothing of xda or cell phones in general let there phone run the whole way out for whatever reason. I would think that cell/battery manufacturers would take that into consideration.
the reason people used to tell you to drain the battery complete was based on an older battery tech that has what you would call a "memory" it needs to "memorize" it's lowest and highest point in order to calibrate the battery. Li-ions do not need that. They actually keep track of your charge cycles.
suppose it can handle 1000 cycles. on the first day, you used up 75% of your battery and put it on the charger to max. then the next day you use another 75% and do the same thing. at this point what actually happens is that the battery will count this as 1.5 cycles rather than 2 cycles. But redpoint is right.
Do NOT drain the battery completely when it's a Li-ion battery. it's old advice for old tech battery that is legit for that type of battery but not Li-ion batteries.
To calibrate your battery, you just use your phone normally. It will figure out where it is supposed to be as you use and charge it over the course of a few days.
better battery life
Notice on the graph, the screen was not on for a while though...

It is true that there is a built in 'safety zone' so that the battery does not drain completely to zero.
However, it is also true that this 'safety zone' can and HAS failed for some users (including some who are on these forums)
With the way that Li-Ion batteries work, and 'calibrate', there is no added benefit to draining it completely to zero. If there is no benefit, then the risk is not worth it.

These ideas ran through my mind reading your post:
I. You might want to calibrate your battery. I've run into many instruction how to do this (just google the keywords: Desire Z calibrate battery), but basically the ones that do NOT require you to drain your battery to zero first, came down to this:
0. Turn Fastboot OFF!
1. Power on your Desire then connect to your Charger and Fully charge until the LED changes Green.
2. Disconnect your phone from the charger and then power off.
3. Reconnect your phone to your charger with the power off and wait for the green LED.
4. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on.
5. Once the phone has fully booted / ready to use ... power off again.
6. With the power off connect the phone to the charger and wait for the green LED.
7. Disconnect from the Charger then power on and use normally.
Many people seem to have greatly increased their battery life just by following those simple steps. I am currently in the process of trying it myself, but will probably need some hours before I can verify if the overall life has significantly increased.
II. You might want to install an App like "Watchdog lite" for a longterm check if you have any apps or processes, that work as a battery eater in the background.
III. if the above tips should fail, you might want to upgrade your radio and maybe also align the radio library (RIL), to match it best with your radio and ROM. But do a lot of reading and research before actually performing that task, since this is nothing for beginners and might even make things worse. This thread might be a good point to start your research.
hope that helps,
Tronar
Okay I have a question for the masses here. Why are YOU obsessed with battery life on your SGS3?
I've been through my fair share of cell phones with the latest 3 being the Galaxy S, SII and now the SIII. I've been through a long list of custom roms as well as time spent on stock roms and not once I have I installed a battery monitoring app like Juice Defender, nor have I been interested in undervolting or underclocking as I don't feel the extra battery life outweighs the instability of the phone and the time spend finding the exact perfect values to prevent reboots. As long as I have battery life to get my through the day (which I always have MORE than enough, I'm happy. I'm not a heavy user but my phone gets a workout during the day and I'm never far from a charger which is the awesome thing about having a USB connector to do the charging.
So I ask the question, what is the obsession with battery life? Are you trying to go green and get the most between charges as to not waste power recharging? Do you use your phone so much during the day that you can't make it through the school or work day without it going dead? Are you off the grid living in the bush and only get to charge when you are in town every couple days? Is it bragging rights you are looking for? Why did you spend big bucks to buy an extended battery? Why don't you use the phone the way it was intended to be used and turn off syncing apps just to save a bit of battery? Why do you turn screen brightness down to minimum and leave it there all the time when we have big beautiful screens that look so much better when they are correctly lit up for our surroundings?
I just find it interesting that every ROM thread and every kernel thread and a good portion of the threads in Q/A sections are littered with questions and discussions and arguments about battery life. How to get better battery life, why is my battery draining so fast on such and such rom, what is a good screen on time amount per charge. I don't understand nor can I find an interest in spending time to dissect and analyze everything just to squeeze an extra half hour of screen time out of my phone.
So why? Why are YOU so interested in the battery life of your phone. I'm not looking to make fun of anyone here. Just curious what the obsession is all about and why you are so interested. How does it make your phone or your life easier and better. Maybe I'm missing something.
Well for me, my battery life really sucked and didnt understand why so I started researching and i found out from stock you can do tweaks to improve it and so on and so on.
When I say my battery sucked on stock though it was really bad. I couldnt go a whole day. I would get about 10-15 hours of on time with less than a hour of screen time and my phone would be dead.
I dont care for going 2 days without a charge, I just wanted to go morning to night and still have some juice left. which i wasnt able to do before.

Actually, battery life can have quite a few hours difference depending on your settings, apps, kernel settings and ROM you run. So yes, it does matter if you can get 3.5hrs on screen instead of 1.5hrs.
People don't want to have to carry their charger with them all the time in fear of their phone dying on them in the middle of the day.
For me it is just the simple fact that I can run my phone for almost 2 full days without a charge (not kidding either). But I would venture to say that for most, it is because of the whole reason why many are here. We're Tweakers and no I don't mean Meth addicts. We do it because we can. I don't undervolt at all but I do overclock my kernels a bit (not max) but have found a really nice balance that will give me plenty of time using my phone and not having to worry about charging. Yup, I use my phone.
I smile to myself when I see these screen shots and the line is smooth and flat. Not sure if you are a skier or not but a good analogy is if you see a Double-Black Diamond (expert/steep), there is something wrong. If you see a Blue-Square (intermediate/nice slope) then you are good to go. Green-Circle (begginner/very low gradiant) means that noting is running.
Btw moving to Q&A
I feel the same as the OP. I don't OC/UV for pretty much the same reasons. I don't care. I have run Juice Defender in the past on stock setting values because I was basically lazy and didn't feel like tweaking the sh*t out of it to get the "best" battery life. Not to mention I don't like that it literally turns off your cell radio and initializes it in incremental intervals. I have actually been running an app called One Power that is free on the Play Store and have found it does improve my battery life mostly when my device is idle. But I, like you, am hardly obsessed with getting the best battery life. I don't use extended batteries because I hate how they make the phone twice as thick and I tend to avoid anything non-OEM for obvious reasons. I'm basically happy if I can get through a day on a single charge. I do have a 2nd OEM battery I keep charged in case I don't have time to fully charge up. Our expectations of getting days worth of use on a single charge is just ridiculous and unrealistic. If I cared that much I'd switch to Verizon and get a RAZR Maxx. But that ain't happening anytime soon! Besides, not all phones are created equal so - what works for one person may not work for another. I feel discussions of battery life in ROM development threads are a waste of time and serve only to clutter and detract from development of the ROM. Apps, use, etc are huge variables and will vary greatly from one user to the next. So, when people say "battery life on this ROM is great!" I usually roll my eyes and ignore the post.

Hey, can you shoot me a PM with more about that App. I'll check it out tonight but can you give me more info on it from a real-life user and not some Market desc/review.
Also, report those stupid posts in the Dev threads and we can delete those. I saw one the other day about 5 hours after a ROM came out (new thread and all) stating that the battery life was "Awesome!!!". How in the heck could you know after 5 hours of the ROM being posted (he was not a tester either), let alone being flashed. Rediculousness.

I'm generally indifferent about battery life and attempts to prolong it for 2 reasons.
1. The settings and customization done by the manufacturer are stable values tested and balancing between battery life and the features of the phone.
2.Everyone know what they're getting jnto when they buy a phone with ~4 inch screen, has LTE and top of the line features. It's rather obvious that battery life won't be great, if it isn't then you might as well just go back to the candy bar phones, if you expect the best and the newest AND battery life.I certainly didn't expect my phone to run for 10+ hours when I got it... and besides buying the best phone on the market and then turning everything off to conserve battery life just defeats the purpose. Just buy an extended battery, buy the extra battery OEM and bring a spare along, or have an external charger as well as a 2amp usb charger.
Edit: When I initially got the phone, it was getting 6-8 hours on a charge after a couple of months 12-14 hours per charge. The same thing happen on the JB OTA, Im getting between 10-18 hours depending on my Reddit, Twitter, Gmail and Engadget usage, though I have to admit there are sometimes problems with some apps preventing deep sleep and occasionally what seems to be memory leaks with apps constantly using the data connection.

I like pushing it to see how far the battery can go. I could make it through the day before, but with some compromises. I bought an extended battery and flashed a new rom (which came with some good kernel settings to mess with), and now I can keep everything on and go two days without a charge.
For me it's more about getting what I'm used to--recently switched to gs3 from an iPhone 4, which had amazing battery life. I got around 8 hours screen on with that and initially only 3 with the gs3. So I tweaked away and now it's back to what I expect!
Edit: also I tweaked my way to better battery life because I can--why settle for something that could be better?
