Maybe someone can answer a couple questions I have. I finally grew a set and rooted and flashed CM7 to my phone. I noticed that videos I have on my phone are choppy when playing back now. Any idea why?
Also, maybe I just don't see it, but is there a way to turn off the shutter sound in the camera?
Anyone also have any suggestions for a first time rooter/flasher?
The choppiness may be because CM7 is not 720p and the quality isn't as good, that is my guess at least. This is because CM7 is AOSP not Sense.
As for the shutter the only way I can find a way to rid it is by turning my volume down, if there is a solution I would like to know as well.
And some tips for first time rooter/flashers is make sure to back up everything! Make a nandroid backup before flashing anything. That way if any problems occur you can just revert back. Also check out different types of ROMs to fund one of your liking. Try AOSPs (CM7, UD) Sense 2.0 (WarmZ 2.2, IncROM, Re-Engineered, SkyRaider) and just anything you find intriguing. Free Wireless Tethering is a huge plus for being rooted too. Just have fun and keep nandroids!
People have made flashables that remove the shutter sound entirely, not sure where they are as I've never used them.
The video playback shouldn't be choppy, lower quality shouldn't mean lower fps- not to mention that they are still very nice quality vids.
Check to make sure if it's only choppy when playing back on your phone or if it's still choppy after you've uploaded it to your computer and play it there.
If it's only choppy on your phone it's possible you may have tried to watch it while your phone was doing background processes that ate up cpu - or - you considerably underclocked your phone.
Playback for my vids are smooth on the highest setting, and I underclocked my phone (CM7)

Stagefright isn't able to handle 720p on our phones yet. Came from CM himself.
You can get replacement camera sounds here. There is one that is silent. I did this by extracting the camera_click.ogg file and used Root Explorer to overwrite the file in system/media/audio/ui. Once I did that the camera no longer makes a sound when taking a picture.
Hope this helps.
Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anybody here has used any of the custom roms that offer 44khz sound in the video recording app.
I'm currently using the stock froyo 2.2 and am getting good battery life after disabling network data and sync. So the rom will need to be as good or better.
I was using Insertcoin 2.0.0 A2SD+ for a while, before switched to data++ (same Rom, with some internal memory tweaks).
Fast, battery life was better than stock (thanks to the modified kernel) - 44 khz sound works except in 720p (Gingerbread based Roms will have 44khz in 720p).
Sounds good, so what datarate does insertcoin offer in 720p, is it that ****ty 8khz crap?
Also, what is data++ like compared to insertcoin, what audio sample rates are offered on data++?
Yes, in 720p it is that 8khz recording sound.
Data++ compared to A2SD+ shortly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12920444&postcount=2
So, phone feels smoother than with A2SD+. But also it requires your phone to be S-OFF and having a custom NAND partiton table.
P.S.: There are already good Gingerbread ROMs in the developement thread with 720p and 44 khz (as I heard). But I'll wait a few weeks, till they will be perfected
ALL THE CREDIT FOR THIS FIX GOES TO GALNET
Galnet posted a fix for 720p choppy recording in the MIUI post.
The problem I found was that it didn't work for everybody.
So, after doing a tkdiff on the changed file for the fix: media_profiles.xml, I saw that the 720p fix is a change of the recording bitrate from 12,000,000 to 10,000,000.
For my phone it wasn't enough and I was still getting choppy recordings, so lowered the bitrate even further to 5,000,000 and now I have flawless 720p recording!!!
How to fix the issue:
1) Make /etc/ R/W (use root explorer)
2) Edit the file: media_profiles.xml and change the bitrate line:
<CamcorderProfiles cameraId="0">
<EncoderProfile quality="hd" fileFormat="mp4" duration="60">
<Video codec="h264"
bitRate="12000000"
to:
bitRate="5000000"
3) save the file
4) make /etc/ R/O again
5) enjoy 720p recording
NOTES
1) HD playback is still choppy -- so you have to transfer the file to your computer to test!!!
2) You can try and increase the bitrate from 5000000 to 10000000 (which was GALNET's original value) -- and if it is still good for you great.
THANKS A LOT GALNET!!!
Somebody knows what the bitrate is for 720p videos in Samsung roms?
JVP:
quality = 'high'
fileformat = 'mp4'
duration = '60'
video codec = 'h264'
bitrate = '10000000'
width = '1080'
height = '720'
framerate = '30'

On XXJVP rom the bitrate for recorded 720p videos is ~12mbps
When on cm7 i found out that playing with different cpu governors influences the 720p choppiness more or less as well. Conservative governor messes 720p up, while on demand improved it....but didnt get rid of it.
Havent tried galnet's fix or their latest miui but on a pc the reported bitrate of 720p material from SGS is ~12mbps + ~2mbps audio track
Im on Doc kitchen jvp rom now with SGS2 camera app and works butter smooth. Its not just the recorded material that is smooth but also when panning around just after starting the camera app is very fluid (as opposed to cm7/miui)
Thanks! I also found out about this workaround by looking at the patch to 7.7, which diff showed a change from 12,000,000 (in 7.5) to 8,000,000. I don't recommend lowering that value to 5,000,000 because more kb/s = smoother video. Though I noticed something strange:
1. After upgrading to 7.7 (8,000,000 bitrate), I tried catching a HD video with MiuiCamera, that produced a very choppy video (still...) with unsynced audio.
2. I catched another 720p video with Android Camera, and the result was better, though I don't like the m4v container for the output files.
3. I used MiuiCamera to record another HD video, but this time it was perfect!
4. The following videos shot by MiuiCamera were still as good, even after a reboot, for now.
So, I don't think we require the Camera.apk to make MiuiCamera.apk work as it should. There is probably something about the governor or kernel ticks (HZ) which is clashing with the 720p recording. For the "record" (lol), I'm using the smartass governor on Zach's NEO 08, while scheduler and OC/UV don't seem to have a high relevance.
Also, why does MiuiCamera produce a 3gp video for 720p recordings, while it's clairly specified to use the mp4 container? I also used Avidemux and ffmpeg to check the video, and it has a 1280x720 resolution with H.264 and AAC codecs. So, why the 3gp extension?
EDIT: I forgot, have you understood why the m4v max bitrate was lowered to 2,000,000 while stock JVP has 12,000,000 ?
Any other feedback aside from this comment?? I would appreciate if you guys found a way recording a nice 70p vdieo from my phone
Currently on CM7 recording is bad, doen't work properly. Users from galnetMIUI forums claim that recording works fine with Chameleon release. Fix is not public, so... CM7 hasn't got proper 720p video recording
It isn't the unique change...
Probably some more changes in the kernel also.There was a thread on their forums, where a user said thar 720p recording works only with default kernel, while with custom kernels doesn't. It's quite annoying, using a stock/custom ROM based on official looks really slow for me, using CM7 feels really good and fast... but with the loose of recording, which I really need for my little girl's unique moments in life recording. The High setting for camera in CM7 makes recording possible, there are very small glitches sometimes, but it's a pitty to not use it a fully potential.
Thats not a "fix"? It just lowering the bitrate which means less smoothness and worse quality.
That aint a "fix" for the problem to me
Actually looking at the xml file mentioned in the first post, in the case of latest nightly of CM7 the value is 10000000. But, keep in mind that the post is from june, and in the meanwhile the real fix came with galnetMIUI chameleon (or something) which is later. So, they must have figured it out in the meanwhile...
worked for me
Worked for me.
I decreased HD bitRate from 10000000 to 5000000 bps
also decreased HIGH bitRate from 3000000 to 2000000
my video is now playing quite smooth.
Thanks
SGS I9000, Cyanogen 7.1.0
is this applicable to galnet miui weekly?
screwing around with the lgcamrecorder app settings may help?
on HD i' 10000000 too, but had ploblems on recording. record in format M4V, but look mediaprofiles it wrote as MP4. why it record different format?
The homescreen is quite noticeably not a smooth 60fps, it stutters and with the overlay enabled in developer settings, can see the framerate drops alot. Especially in freestyle layout mode. Also a lot of games stutter and don't run at a smooth framerate - for example monument valley. Does anyone else get this? Im on stock rom latest update

This is completely dependent on your OS, applications, widgets on screen, running apps, cpu state and the speed you're using your device.. If its really congested and you're running a tonne of apps then you'll perhaps have some slow downs, if you're using a custom kernel and you've lowered the up cpu threshold then that will too have an impact, honestly I'd leave it on stock and minimise the amount of widgets (especially lives ones) you have on your desktops, anything with transparency will have an impact too.
Gaming wise, I have to say this phone is rock solid.
The only game that it couldn't run is dolphin which is a gamecube emulator, running zelda the windwaker.
But I think that's down to optimization rather that anything else.
What set up do you have? Custom rom? Stock? Kernel? Lots or not a lot of apps?
my runs smooth on games, emulators, home screens, videos, taking and recording pictures and video, everything. ive been very happy with its performance, completely stock and running custom roms on my Verizon Variant, viper is my favorite now after last few updates.
I'm also satisfied with my HTC 10 performance, runs smooth (everything stock), but I notice that some games are a bit laggy (like Realracing 3, even if I lower the resolution to FullHD in the Boost+ app).
I wonder if I would get better framerates with the CleanSlate kernel that has Adrenoboost feature, but I'm not to keen on rooting my device because then you can't install OTA updates anymore.
Im running on the stock rom straight from the box, no custom rom or everything
, every game I have tried so far runs awful, massive framerate drops with or without boost. I have compared my framerate in asphalt 8 to this video, with an fps counter, and I get much worse framerates, usually around low 20s, dropping to teens. I don't have powersaving enabled

Anything in HTC's ROM seems to cripple Adrenoboost of the GPU. While on other devices it works perfectly and is reaching up to 60 fps, it doesn't on the HTC 10. It doesn't bother me, as I'm not a heavy gamer, but if you're in need to change it, you could use a custom kernel, as e.g. CleanSlate by @tbalden.

I hope HTC fixes that with some OTA.
Anyway, would the High performance mode in the developer options help the framerate?

As I'm on Viper10, Stock, pnp thermal tweak, or Viper 10 and CleanSlate Kernel. So I can't tell if it would work. The CleanSlate kernel fixes the problem quite well, so I'll use it until HTC maybe fixed the issue as long as I'm gaming and the other config I'll use as my daily driver.

Can anyone that has no custom rom test the framerate on the first map of asphalt 8 and report back?

Do u use sd card
If yes which class, coz i noticed that it can slow the device
I hope htc support team improve the performance and fix the lag issues by updates.
This is an awful bug .May htc solve this in the android 7 update .
Slow SD card like someone else said.
Try it without one.
Maybe your hardware is faulty in some way.
Also try to set all clocks to a constant maximum. So you see if you have the power or not.
Maybe a fake device?
Why is it that despite of having same configuration as OnePlus3, ZUK can't play 4KHDR @60fps as smooth as OP3? Though it can, after some tweaks, but not as efficiently & smooth as OP3(unrooted). I used same Version of MXPlayer and same file for comparison.
I tried all custom kernels available (Heliox,Jaguar,Darkmoon) and Latest versions of major ROMs(RR,AEX,ViperOS). And still didn't match the playback quality of OP3.
Please tell me if there are more kernels or ROMs yet to be tried, which can bring substantial step-up in performance, or which will just Play 4KHDR @ 60fps.
Overall, the User Experience is super-smooth but
this small thing is eating my brain :crying:

First of all, You are comparing "THE BEST" SD820 phone with probably the 3rd or 4th best SD820 phone (antutu wise). Secondly, even on the OP3, why would you choose to play 60fps 4K videos that too HDR ones?! That's ridiculous for anyone. I'm hoping the logical explanation to why you're doing this is to kinda benchmark the phone. But even then a lot of SD653 and SD810 phones can breeze through this benchmark easily. It's even more ridiculous that you've tried almost all roms and kernel combos just for a luxury video playback.
Anyways coming to the point, I tried the Sony 4K 60fps HDR Swordsmith video on my Z2+ (AEX4.6 Official with HelioX 3.18.80) via MX with HW (not plus) decocer and the video was running smooth AF. Infact, compared to playback my friend's OP3 running OxyOS 5.0, my Z2+ had zero hiccups throughout the video while the OP3 had 2 or 3 towards the middle. The interesting thing is that I achieved these results while running CPU underclocked to 1996 & 1401. But technically speaking that shouldn't be a problem in the video playback coz HW decoder runs exclusively on the GPU. Concluding my point, don't watch ridiculously high quality videos on phone and don't change roms and kernels to achieve desired playback, just adjust and optimize them.

My point on playing the best video quality I have, bcz ZUK can, why not. I tried LG Cymatic Jazz HDR to test the playback(details attached).
Back when I had ZUI, it could not play the video at 60 fps. But when I flashed first RR, I was surprised by the result. In MX Player Pro with HW+, it could play super smooth with absolute 0 lag.
Then came updates and further more I flashed many ROMs but never got that playback. Changing kernels didn't help. And now I've same ROM and kernel as you do, because you know.
The fact that you can play 4KHDR @ 60fps, may be bcz ur video isn't having 10 bit color depth. Please attach your video details, I wanna see. If our videos are of same quality, then I may be having some other issue.
Its strange however, you're playing 4KHDR on HW.
Also, do you have Substratum theme or Xposed modules installed? Just curious if these affect performance in any way.

Is it possible that Xposed and Substratum are somewhere causing pain to the system?
Also, I once changed some screen values through Kernel auditor and tried to undo that. I don't know if they're default now, I'm attaching SS just tell me if they're same. I'll try uninstalling Substratum and Xposed and keep system as Lite as possible and then check.
Thanks for your attention and help

Substratum can have some slowing effect on GPU due to its theme engine but that'll be possibly unnoticeable in a SD820. Xposed should be harmless (afaik with my previous phones) unless you are running GPU affecting modules. I don't use substratum because I was perfectly happy with CM theme engine and now that it's gone, I'm not so keen for a replacement. Xposed went meaningless after Lollipop & the birth of Magisk (for me atleast). And lastly about Screen values in KA, they don't have any effect on GPU unless ofcourse you're running grayscale which might actually save you some power (but might be unstable). If you want to reset the values, just uncheck apply on boot under screen settings and reboot. FYI, I ran almost all KCAL profiles I found online and "Perfection" (that's the name of the KCAL profile) for OP2 is giving the best visuals in my perspective. Try it if you want. Happy to have helped you ?✌?
Imo the zuk z2 is not as good at playback than I expected. Even 1080p60 video drop frames constantly at 2x playback speed
Also the phone dont have a hdr screen so why even try to play hdr content anyway

Playing a 60fps video at 2x speed would mean 120fps, that's out of our screen limit. For that purpose display needs 120Hz refresh rate as in New Razer phone, or some frames will get skipped(frame drops) as you noticed.
And the reason why I wanna play that, I search of playing that thing smoothly, I've learned many things. It simply gives me satisfaction.
