Hi folks.
I just rooted my desire, which worked pretty well.
However, I'm unable to boot into recovery mode now. If I try I only get a thumbnail of the phone with a red exclamation mark. I can still do adb reboot from a terminal tho, just the recovery mode wont start.
Any ideas and advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I am not sure which method you use...but once you get that thumbnail you need to "push the files" before you can get into the "flashing and wiping" screen. You need to be patient, cause "pushing" those files can take few minutes.
Erm not sure if i get you right, i finished the whole rooting procedure already.
Now, I want to just modify the wake from sleep behavior, actually just a file.
Like I said, it boots just fine, but the recovery mode wont start. Also, I dont have /sbin/recovery, which should be there shouldnt it?
boot into the mode with the red triangle, the rund recovery-windows.bat inside the rooting folder
recovery-linux, figured it out, thank you sir.
General section for these questions, please.
And always worth understanding exactly whats happening when your rooting. Most guides i have seen tell you how to get back to recovery again after.
Rooting your phone is not for someone that doesnt understand the risks and have some knowlage into the process.

Hello.
I'm pretty sure i bricked my HTC desire yesterday when trying to flash LeeDroids Mod. My phone hangs at the three green HTC letters and it has been like this the whole night. I've tried taking out the battery and things like that but it still hangs. Even when triyng to do a recovery. So i searched the forum to find out how to unbrick the phone and i found a nice thread that explains how to get acces to the SD again and then how to unbrick the USB connection. But I havent been able to try this out yet since i cannot find out how to enter commands when in fastboot. I know I need to be connected with a USB-cable to the PC, but what else do I have to do?
Hope someone can help 'cause I would really love to have my HTC Desire working again so that i can try out more cool FroYo mods from this lovely forum.

you have to use adb, google the android sdk and start there
All you need to do is boot into FASTBOOT, plug in your USB and run an RUU to get back to stock (assumg one is available for your phone) and then root again, had to do it myself the other day
you do not have to do ANY of this
if you are using clockworkmod or any custom recovery then there is the option to mount USB storage in which you can put on a backup or any other rom onto your sd card, unmount usb storage, and flash it, all in one.

How do I do that when my phone doesnt boot? As i wrote in the first post it is stock at the 3 green HTC letters. I was using clockworkmod to flash, but as I wrote i cannot boot into andoid atm.
@AndroHero: Can you please give me a link or something? I have tried a lot of things, but i doesnt seem to work, so I would like to be certain that the link and guide im using is right.

Do you have the fake-flash zip file renamed as update.zip and at the root of your SDCard?

Have you booted the phone while holding the volume down and then selecting recovery, then when recovery boots, press volume up and power then select "apply update.zip" ?
The problem is that when i choose recovery it freezes aswell. The screen with the phone and the little red triangle freezes, so i cannot choose recovery.

So do what I said here...to get into FASTBOOT hold back and power it on
What is RUU?
Edit: Maybe I need someone to make a step by step noob guide? Im totally lost. Ive flashed my Desire lots of times before and ive never had a single problem, but right now i really dont know what to do and how to do?
If you're asking questions about RUU's then maybe rooting wasn't for you. It's basic stuff. You need a grasp of the basics before trying something advanced!
Basically it's the official ROM file from HTC/your phone vendor...
Okay. Thanks. I thought that RUU was something like that but I just couldnt see how i should be able to acces any files right now. As i wrote before the phone freezes at the picture of a phone with the red triangle, and i am not able to get any further that that. I would really appreciate if anyone could tell me how and what to do next?
I had the same problem a few days ago. For me it worked to just go through the rooting process again, you can find the steps on modaco (just step 1 of r6), I can't link them at the moment I'm at work and it seems I can't open modaco from here.
Anyways if you follow step 1 you can access the recovery again and the phone will boot past the HTC logo screen.
Also these steps are well documented on modaco.
Try this first since it will save you the step of running the RUU, which I wasn't able to (somehow the software complained my battery was below 30%, which it wasn't)
Good luck hope this solves it for you.

You don't need to go into recovery! boot into FASTBOOT and then leave it at that. Plug the phone in and it will then say FASTBOOT USB. Then run the RUU your phone came with originally. You don't need to go anywhere near Recovery
I am pretty certain that ive found a solution now. I deserve a fist in the nuts for being so stupid not to press volume up + power when trying to get into recovery mode. But fortunately dnlgee asked if i had remembered this. Now that ive gotten this far i should be able to solve the rest. I will however return if im still unable to solve it.

Ah I missed that part, I couldn't access recovery either. Only thing left working was fastboot for me. All other options would hang on the HTC logo screen.
I did a search but there were too many random results.
I'm on fresh 0.5.3 and I want to flash the new update but for some reason when I try to get into recovery mode it locks up (tried waiting 15mins) on the white htc evo 4g screen. this is the first time this is happening.
I'm sure that this has happened to someone else so if someone can help a fellow evo user that would be great.

i had this same issue while playing around with roms. i just ran the windows recovery batch file found here:
http://www.androidcentral.com/evo-4g-root-instructions
and updated everything properly. which recovery are you using? i use amon-ra, had to make sure it was the proper version. here's the thread i also referred to, which worked for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
make sure you use the portion about getting root after the ota update. let me know how that goes.
edit: i just realized that both links provide the same info. i'd recommend the xda one.
Thanks for the reply.
I'm using the latest amon RA. I tried switching to clockwork but had the same results. I'll definitely try what you suggested and see what happens.
Thanks again!
**Ok so I used the link you provided and hate to admit it but I'm a little confused. I'm still a little bit of a noob when it comes to this stuff. Is there any way you can give me a simple breakdown of what you did to solve this issue? I know it's a lot to ask but I would really appreciate it.**

no problem!
i'm assuming you have nand unlocked since you were able to get the fresh rom on it before...
ok, so i'm guessing you're getting the phone with the red exclamation screen?
if so, at this point, go download the files from here:
http://link.geekfor.me/evorecovery
basically, follow the instructions in "Flashing recovery for custom ROMs" here:
http://www.androidcentral.com/evo-4g-root-instructions
that'll give you the recovery menu. once you do that, use the usb toggle option and transfer the files noted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055 (in the ****ROOTING AFTER OTA 1.47.651.1 (Full Root)**** section)
once you do that, unmount the usb from the recovery on your phone. at this point, you should be able to adb into it via running the "adb shell" command on your command prompt. go through step 5F and on. that should confirm root and nand unlock, with the right amon-ra recovery version.
let me know how that goes. good luck!

Thank you so much! But one thing....I'm not getting that red exclamation point though. it just gets stuck on the white HTC evo 4g boot screen and never goes into recovery.

I can pretty much get into the screen has the skateboarding androids and lists the following:
Fastboot
Recovery
As soon as I select recovery it immediately goes to the white loading screen that says "HTC EVO 4G" in black and stops there. If I boot normally into the phone it's fine. For some reason it won't let me into amon-ra.
I very curious in this thread and outcome because I'm trying to flash Amon Ra and get out of Clockwork. However, i ran into not being able to get into Clockwork....but luckily I had ROM manager installed and it finally reloaded Clockwork.
But I need to get AmonRa recovery on my device and I just cant get it to flash....so I'm really interested in the out come of this thread.

I just don't understand how this could've happened. I've used the amon-ra recovery with no problems before (flashed damagecontrol and fresh multiple times) which means that it was properly installed. Can it possibly get corrupted some how???
I'm a bit of a NOOB, so bear with my terminology. My phone was rooted and Nand unlocked (S=off), running Fresh 3.4. It will not accept calls so I have to take it to Sprint. I ran the latest RUU to get it unrooted, but I could not use Titanium Backup to restore my apps. I ran Universal AutoRoot.zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448 and went through what seemed to be the complete process. At the end I was left with the bootloader menu to boot into the recovery but my EVO will not go into recovery. When I try I get I get Recovery the screen shows a phone with a red triangle. I have tried everything I know (I'm a bit of a NOOB), and I cannot get to recovery or Nandroid. I did a Nandroid Backup but can't get to it. My phone no longer communicates with my computer. I have just moved and need my phone to set up appointments. Please help, I'm desperate.
posted in the wrong section. however
does your bootloader show S-OFF now?
all you may need to do is flash a custom recovery to it.
If you unrooted your phone you'll no longer have a recovery, unless I'm misunderstanding you...

from my understanding, he unrooted & then tried to root again. but i may be wrong lol
If you can get into bootloader, you can fix your phone.
get to the bootloader with the usb plugged in so it says fastboot usb in RED at the top. On your pc download the android sdk, goto the tools folder, copy over a custom recovery.img (ra or cm) to the tools folder, type cmd in the address bar, in the command prompt type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img
and press enter (you can replace recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img with the img of your choice). select bootloader again from the menu, select recovery, enjoy!

and "adb loob.bat" method I dont know why nothing works it runs the loop i do the recovery and i get a black screen with a pic of a phone with a red triangle and a ! in the middle and the computer dont find the device
Please help thanks
First of all you should have posted your question here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
Secondly, if you need it more spelled out, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
Whatever you do read and make sure you have everything installed, sauch as the SDK, as well as the files necessary placed in the tools folder of the SDK to make it easier to push the files.
ok....have you rooted a Slide before? When you first boot into recovery you get a screen with a phone and a red triangle. Hold down your volume up button and power button at the same time and it should get you to the stock recovery. From there you need to choose Apply sdcard: update.zip. From there if you have done the root process correctly it should boot up into clockwork recovery.
Not sure if you made it that far if your device isn't recognized by adb.
Hope this helps and please post in the correct section next tim. Things like this go in Q&A

I would be so greatful if someone could help me, I think I have really messed up.
Coles Notes: I flashed the 4.0.4 image to my System partition which I am pretty sure should have gone to the boot partition now... Holy **** I'm dumb.
Anyways now my phone is just stuck saying Google. Anyone who can point me in the right direction of even a System image I can flash over top I would be so greatful.
Ok. I'm a dumb newbie, but what happens if you pull the battery, put it back in, then hold down the Up/Down buttons and turn the phone on?

Not a dumb newbie, checking if bootloader still works is a good idea
@OP: If you can get in the bootloader, your best bet would be unlocking, installing CWM and then flash a ROM through it.
You can also flash the stock ROM via the GNex toolkit.
Just read the guides and information here in the forums, it seems confusing at first but is really simple once you get used to it.
Good luck!
Thank-you for your quick response. I have CWM installed and can get into the bootloader. the problem now seems to be I cant get the device to show up in windows I always get <waiting for device> when going to flash it. Any ideas? I have been searching the forums trying to find an answer but nothing so far seems to have worked.
Another dumb newbie thing, but when you plug the phone in to the USB port on your computer, does your computer show the phone as having connected (ala the ADB driver in your Device Manager in Windows)?
If not, double check to make sure your ADB drivers are installed. I doubt they aren't, seeing as how you were flashing stuff earlier (from your computer, right?), but it's a wild guess anyway.
Thanks to everyone for the advise. Yes I could see the drivers and they were working perfectly according to device manager. However I guess it was stuck outside of debug mode?
Anyways from the boot menu the program was able to detect it, flash 4.0.4 to the phone, and then I was able to install the canadian radio without issue (hence the reason why I did this in the first place, we are stuck on yakjuux with 4.0.1).
Thanks again to everyone, great learning experience.
Sure thing!
Glad it worked
As a future reference, the "Boot Menu" is actually where you need to be for flashing via PC. The commands won't come through if you're in recovery.
Make sure to make an Android right now!
You enter CWM Recovery, go to backup and restore and then hit backup.
In case your phone ever messes up while you're not close to a computer, you can just boot into CWM and hit "restore", it's as easy as that.
I always have 2 recoveries on my phone just in case.
