HTC Flash ?'s - Desire General

I'm pretty new to this Android stuff so I will apologize upfront if this question is beyond lame. I have read several posts and forums and still seem to be a bit confused so here goes.
I have a Telstra branded Desire and I want to flash it with the Generic Euro ROM without necessarily rooting the device. I will create a Gold Card and was wondering if I could just execute the Generic ROM from the PC through HTC Sync like it was an update being applied or is there a different way that is better.
Can someone let me know if that will work or it it is necessary to use Paul's (Madaco's ROM that roots and provides superuser access).
Also, can I then just due the same process and flash back the Telstra ROM if I need to?
Finally, if I root and put Paul's ROM on there, what is the best process if I wanted to change and use PAY's ROM.
Again, I apologize if this is redundant, but I just can't seem to figure it out. If some could reply with some responses or a link or two, I would appreciate it.
Thanks so much in advance for any help.

Rooting without changing ROM? Some questions.

I'm happy with the stock ROM that my unbranded Desire came with, but I'm thinking about rooting it to add some extra functionality - specifically two-way call recording and Titanium Backup right now.
Is it possible to root the phone without changing ROMs and/or losing all of my currently installed apps, settings etc etc?
If it is, what happens when ROM updates appear? Can I install the OTA updates or would I need to wait for someone to mod it to keep root enabled?
Finally, the same question but regarding 2.2. What happens when the official 2.2 update comes out? I'm guessing nobody knows for certain, but are we likely to be waiting a while before we can update if our phones are rooted?
I'd have thought this sort of thing would be covered in a rooting FAQ but I can't seem to find anything about it!
Much thanks for any advice.
I'm also very interested in the response to this, as a new Desire user I don't think that the rooting/rom upgrade guide is particularly helpful, it dives far too deeply into the topic before actually talking about the process, what it involves from a complete Desire newbie perspective.
In a word - no.
In a few more words, part of the rooting process has to replace your existing ROM.

Dave

[Q] How to get Froyo: T-Mobile unlocked now on o2

My desire was purchased on T-Mobile (has T-Mobile startup screen), I also bought an unlock code from them. I'm now using my o2 contract sim in the phone. I'm interested in updating the software to FROYO but have no idea how to go about it.
I don't want to do anything complicated and am happy to wait for an official release. I've read the network sends an update direct to your phone. In my case would this come from T-Mobile or o2?
When I check for system updates it says none are available. My software number is 1.15.110.11
I've looked around the forum for ages but I still can't get a definite answer to my question.
You can be waiting for a very long time for froyo from a network provider.
It's easy to debrand and upgrade your phone. Create a goldcard & download an official ROM. Then you can simply upgrade OTA. There's loads of guides on this forum.
Hi there!
Understand your situation, since I had almost exactly the same circumstances (mine is running on orange)! I couldnt get a definite answer either, so bit the bullet anyway and did it, here is how:
1-rooted the phone by UnrEVOked method (really couldnt be bothered by the goldcard etc method; this method was easy, just had some driver install problems since the guide isnt too good on this point, but its easy to figure it out)
2-Installed the new radio
3-installed the generic rooted 2.2 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775, just by doing an easy straighforward update from the sdcard by going to the bootloader.
Phone was still UNLOCKED,and all running ok. Just had an issue where the phone would say "sim card changed, do you want ot load settings etc". Say NO, otherwise you lose your wallpapers, scenes, etc settings, and you have to redo the whole shebang.
Hope your experience is same as mine, im a noob too, so dont take anything for granted (your phone may have different firmware from mine etc), and make doubly sure before you go ahead!
Good luck.

Hi mate.
I'm in exact the same situation (German T-mobile 2.1 Softnumber: 1.15.110.11). Your guide looks awesome!!! Can you please please please write it in a bit detail?? from a factory branded 2.1 to root, then to froyo?? please??
I read the UnrEVOked guide from rootmydroid.co.uk
but looks like I only need to the first half for your step 1?
does it root the phone ? does it wipe all my settings and apps???
I also don't know what to do with the radio in your step 2??
can you please help??!! THX soooooooooo much !!!!
Hi thanks for the replies, very useful info.
Does rooting the phone invalidate the warranty?? That's what's putting me off doing it and why I'm happy to wait for an official update.
Hey forgot10!
The step 2 of unrevoked guide is installing the ROM of your choice. Just pick the new ROM you want (from many here and other forums, I just picked a rooted generic 2.2), and install as per part 2 of the unrevoked guide.
2.2 requires a new radio, which is linked and shown in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775. Installing the radio doesnt wipe the data, but you seem to need to WIPE (from the recovery image) before putting the new ROM. So use TItanium Backup, or MYbackup, to save your apps, and user data on the SD card, then when the new ROM is installed, you reinstall one of those apps (from market) then rewrtie your apps/data!
As per warranty, check the other threads to be sure, but i think, yes it does invalidate your warranty, but im not 100% certain!

[Q] My Head Hurts

Hi to all and thanks in advance to anyone that helps.
I've finally moved to Android and purchased a DHD branded to Orange. I've unlocked it for any SIM card, after following recommendations on this site and so far, so good.
Now, I want to remove all the Orange stuff from the phone so I can have what I want on it to make it my own. I've read so many threads/guides my head is spinning and I'm a bit confused as to what I need to do and how to do it.
The phone is running the following:
Android version 2.3.3
HTC Sense version 2.1
Build number 2.37.61.11
Software number 2.37.61.11
I wouldn't want to start trying things without really knowing if I was doing the right thing, so If someone could point me in the right direction as to where I need to go and what I need to do, it would be much appreciated.
I've seen websites offering the debranding service for a price, but I would rether learn how to do it myself.
Again, thanks in advance.
Basically what you need to do is this:
1. Downgrade phone and get RADIO S-OFF
2. Create a goldcard as your phone is branded. This is used to install zips from CWR.
3. Root phone
4. Backup everything
5. Install roms, kernals, anything you want, or
5.1. Remove programs you have on current ROM and install new kernel for improvements. Up to you!
It is scary at first. I'd suggest looking into, but not necessarily trying the guides, one could be: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003 how to Downgrade.
If you want to remove the Bloatware (the apps Orange installed) You'll need to root, which I am assuming you've already looked into.
The DesireHD was "fixed" so you can't root if you are running later releases. Downgrading is a necessity. Look in to that first.
edit; this worked for me when creating a goldcard: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...gold-card-for-htc-desire-without-hex-editing/
Thanks for the quick response. I'll take a look at your suggestions later and post back.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
OK, I've read the guide which pushed me onto other guides which I've also read. I've also printed them off so I can follow them as I go along.
As the phone is new to me I don't need to back up any data so that's something I can avoid at present.
A few questions;
Do I transfer the PD98IMG.zip(stock) ROM to the SD card whilst it's still in the phone or from my PC via a card reader?
When does the Goldcard (I've created one) come into play?
Do I do all this with/without the SIM card in the phone?
Do I need to disconnect the phone from my PC to change from 'charge only' to 'disk drive' for file transfer and then reconnect it?
If something goes wrong, can I recover my phone back to the state it's in now?
I'm sure that I'll have a few more questions before I take the plunge so any help is appreciated.
Edit: I've found a guide for my software build so will move questions there to avoid duplication (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152233)

they tell you to put Q's in the Q&A forum.. then you do it, and you get **** for it. this isnt simple for everyone and there are different intricacies to all the firmware. if you dont want to answer a legit question, dont. but its amazing how smug this place is sometimes. give the guy a break, he just got the phone.
Try
Dont worry. Just try out the guides

it might work for you. If you really wanna root just go for it and post your results for other users benefit. If you can wait then wait till your version comes under the umbrella.
Cheers
Enjoy your new DHD

I wasn’t giving ****. I was simply stating that proper use of the search function (with multiple stickies in each sub forum, and agreements when you sign up stating to use it prior to posting) should be followed.
When I was green and first got my android device, I searched and searched and read anything and everything relevant before making any post. Too many people on these and other forums are lazy and don’t put in the time to really learn about their devices before beginning to mess with them. At least half of the people in here shouldn’t even be rooting their phones as they're technically inept from being able to recover from a blunder.
I've read so many posts which shouldn’t even exist if diligent information gathering and processing was actually executed, polluting the forums so much that finding a piece of useful information by simply browsing through all the bullarky, is next to impossible. I personally instead now strictly use the search function when looking for information that I may require.
Also, on page 3 or 4 of that thread, even though the op says "to 2.37.762.2 ONLY" there's been reports confirming it works with his version as well.
I've been experimenting on finding a way to downgrade 2.43.
Once receiving my phone back from repair after a true Brick (where only viable recovery is through jtaging) I found my device was updated to 2.43.661.1 which is part of the unrootable category at this time. So even after not being able to work on my rom for 3 weeks, due to the device being in repair, I still can’t work on my rom because I can’t push apk's and files into system area's to which root access is necessary.

First url points to a method that does NOT work.
psneuter does not work, therefore the goldcard downgrade will not work.
Second url is what I posted as the first response.
@ Babycover
Before attempting to root, take the next few days to learn about things like the goldcard, RUU's, the Android SDK's, and basic linux commands (since android is simply a version of linux). Look at various tutorials on how to do things (but dont actually do them, just take note on similarities, and reocurring commands so if you were to do them you'd be comfortable executing them). Familiarize yourself with everything before experimenting.... makes recovering from a problem a lot easier than reading replies of people who think they know what they're talking about.
Things to note: Any RUU can be used once your device has radio S-off and use them rather than a PD98IMG.zip from your sd card. Your spash screen can only be changed if your device has ENG[ineering] S-off ('ENG' will take the place of 'SHIP' in the bootloader). Do not partition your sd card using CWM recovery; even though it supposedly has been fixed, it still may brick your phone (I personally dont believe you should have to partition an SD card ever!).
If the 2.37 method of the rooting doesnt take, you're in my boat with an unrootable device. You might as well see if you can update to the latest 2.5X build if your phone isnt carrier specific (using an ruu, and the device's data that cannot be synced with a google account or sense will be gone, but atleast you'll have the latest build)
If you do manage to Downgrade, dont use the post-downgrade rooting method, rather, follow my steps to root, radio s-off and eng s-off
Its a collection of what works, simplified for use without extras.

'Search *****' isnt a very inviting response to what i feel is a pretty good forum. Also, english is a second language for many. What is simple to you isnt so simple for many

getting stuck

hey guys im doing the cyanogenmod htc desire z root. i'm good up till the phone checks the firmware and tells me model id incorrect i have tried both froyo and gingerbread downgrade. i have sdk installed. I tried using a goldcard and that still didnt work. any ideas whats going on.? im runing 2.3.3 and carrier is bell. please help. i have been working and reading for three days. and please no Noobie video. really guys. we have all been in this spot( asking for help that is) . thank you.
Without more details, it's not much specifics I can say.
If I had to make an educated guess I would say that either :
1) Your gfree attempt to change the CID didn't work.
or
2) Your phone is one of the ones that requires the creation of a gold card in order to change the CID version to make the downgrade possible.
I'm a noob at this too, so I don't have much to offer, but I do have the same phone as you (duh) and I'm with Bell too.
I rooted a couple of weeks ago and I also had difficulty getting started - some guides didn't work for me, such as strawmetal's for instance, as well as some others. That's not to say that strawmetal doesn't do awesome work (because he does! - flashaholics) I think it may have had something to with files that he compiled for his guide or maybe even my PC.
In my case this guide worked for downgrading: [thread]http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912[/thread] what was different for me there, compared to other guides, was the thoroughness of how to install the sdk and making all the files were in the right place - this was more work than other guides, but obviously worth it in the end.
This was the guide I used for rooting: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
And of course, this is the guide I used for flashing CyanogenMod: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision:_CyanogenMod
If you're still stuck, you can talk to the guys at #G2Root http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=g2root obviously that's the web version of the chat portal.
Bell also released an OTA update last month, and I don't know if that would interfere with downgrading (again, I'm a noob too). I didn't download the update at the time because I knew I was going to be rooting my phone soon.
Good luck! You'll be super pumped when you see that first CyanogenMod boot animation!
