Contacts -> Middle Name field - Desire General

Hi,
I imported contacts from my old SIM card into the HTC Desire.
Many names were of this form: N John Doe - which is short for "company N, person John Doe".
It worked, because in Contacts I see: N John Doe.
Now I decide to edit this contact because there is so much to add. But this is what it shows in the Editor if I click to edit the name:
First Name = N
Last Name = Doe
...where has John gone??
All right... so I change First Name to "N John".
A while later I decide to export this contact using EasyShare (great app by the way!). I send it to GMail, and what do I see there...? "N John John Doe".
So apparantly Android has a Middle Name field somewhere... but I can't see, edit or erase it?
Is there a Contacts editor that supports the Middle Name field?

i don't suppose you can try importing your contacts from your SIM to your phone memory?
this will provide you with many many more data fields because the sim memory is too small to store all of this.

Sorry for not replying any sooner, kinda forgot this thread existed
I did exactly what you are suggesting to begin with, because afterwards I had to put the old SIM back into my old phone which I still use for work. On my new SIM there are no contacts except the Vodafone ones (voicemail, emergency number etc).
So from what I can tell the copy operation from old SIM to Desire Contacts (in memory) caused the names to be split automatically into First, Middle, Last. And Middle Name is shown in contact lists and also while doing Export/Share, but the field seems to be missing from the Contacts editor. Unless somebody has a solution by now?

Just upgraded to 6.1, where is the contact autocomplete feature?

I read about 6.1's ability to use 'find as you type' contact searching in SMS land. As in, I type 'ty' in the TO: field, and 'Tyler Smith' comes up without having to go into the contact list to find it. Anyone know how to enable this functionality?
xT9 is autocomplete compatible. alt + space will get you where you need to go. It's pointless IMHO if you have a complete keyboard.
If you can't type Tyl and scroll to the hundreds of friends you have named Tyler then it's time for your friends to change there names.
I am not looking for autocomplete for words, I'm looking for it for contacts. When I type in the name field, I get word matches, not contact matches. So, if I type 'Ty', it suggests 'Tyler' as a word, but not as a link to anyone in my contacts list.
When one clicks on Contacts in WM 6 or a cooked 6.1, I personally have always been able to type say I'm looking for a girl named Sarah. I type s....a.....r....
It gives me a list of girls I know of Sara or Sarah.
I scroll down to either one I want to call.
If you are trying to do something else??? I don't understand
I'm talking about doing this from a new SMS compose window. I read that 6.1 allows you to use this kind of search within an SMS window, without leaving the TO field.

This is what he's talking about but regarding TEXT messages. Currently, making phone calls works fine like this, but when composing an SMS/MMS, you have to add a recipient the long way...
when you are adding a contact, in the To: field. Center click and your contacts will appear, proceed typing a couple of letters and pick the contact.
If you want multiple contacts, repeat the process.
I know right....

This is one of the features that was anticipated for 6.1, "look up contacts in messaging just like windows mobile professional". But I can't get it to work either. I have no idea what is up. kinda pisses me off actually

[Q] Where did all these contacts come from?

I go to write a text message to a friend, I type in his name, and I get like 5 versions of his phone number:
(555)000-0000
(+555-000-0000)
5550000000
1(555)0000000
What the heck is going on?? Anyone have any idea??
You have to go in to your contacts, and pull up one of his names details. Then in the top right corner there is a "link" button.Click that. Go to contacts and link to his duplicates. I just finished doing this for my contacts, it actually didn't take so long.
P.S. I don't have my facebook set up, or flickr or whatever tf tmobile packaged on there, so you may have to do the same thing in all the directories. ie link google john doe to facebook john doe.
Hope that helps.

[Q] A very Very! Good Question - Importing Contacts - Experts needed

Hello Friends,
I recently exported some contacts from my old windows mobile phone into a vcard since this is what Google Suggests
So I imported the vcard file into Gmail, and somehow it's
it's put all the contact information into the note field. Perhaps it did this because perhaps at one time I had duplicates of them all and it merged the contact information?
Well all the contact fields are blank except the note field which looks like this
CreationTime: 7/15/2010 10:43:53 AM
FileAs: John, Doe
Importance: 1
LastModificationTime: 7/15/2010 10:44:12 AM
MobileTelephoneNumber: +15555555555
ReminderTime: 1/1/4501 12:00:00 AM
SelectedMailingAddress: 2
Size: 1576
Subject: John Doe
So the problem is when I sync up my contacts with my Evo only the names are listed because theres no phone number in the phone number field it's just in the notes field. And so when I compose a new text message and search for a contact none pull up. I can go into "people" and see the names but yea thats about it.
Please help I haven't searched diligently and I haven't found any solution to this problem.
Any thoughts or ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
CipherFX
Never seen a recommendation to use a Vcard. I exported to a CSV, and everything imported perfectly.
You should import a csv file to gmail, that should def.ly do it for you.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
+1 to everyone else here. I used csv as well and had little problems. I already had some contacts in gmail and had dupes, but gmail also has an option to remove dupes for you.

[Q] CM9 contacts

I have CM9 beta 3.
I can't find the settings to view just the contacts with Phone number. In the stock ROM there is an option to hide the contacts without phone number.
Are there any option to customize my contact list? I dont want to use any other Contacts app.

let me make things clear:
1st, do you have contacts in your phone that doen's have numbers? if so, how come you have them? useless, i think..
2nd, no need to hide the "contacts without phone numbers" when in the first place they are not important contacts, right? they are just names (yeah, names only as you said..)
3rd, if you like to save contact names, use your memo app and not the contact apps..they are for contacts with numbers..
lastly, as you said, hitting the menu button inside your contact app would reveal indifferently as compared to the stock rom..nevertheless, it is not a big deal..
and, try to wipe your contacts stored in your sim card to avoid multiple contacts..
also, try backing up your contacts to your sdcard for security purposes..
-salute!
So i have a lot of contacts in my google account and a lot of them are only email addresses. I would like to hide the emails and keep only the contacts which have phone number. In the stock rom there was an option to do it but here i can't find anything.

CONTACT: People/organization with whom one has social or professional contact or to whom one is related, esp. those with influence and able to offer one help
if we get with this definition we can see that anybody who we interact can be a contact. like the professor of a lecture we take or an it department. And we may "contact" them with e-mail.
2nd, no need to hide the "contacts without phone numbers" when in the first place they are not important contacts, right? they are just names (yeah, names only as you said..)
My Professor or my boss are important contacts for me and i don't have to contact them using phone numbers. i don't have to memorize their mail addressess.
3rd, if you like to save contact names, use your memo app and not the contact apps..they are for contacts with numbers..
you don't say . so a person with an e-mail address is not a contact. really?

Well, I also do have contacts without phone numbers. My skype contacts are listed there for example.

´Well, I would like to have them hidden too. It´s no question about it´s needed or not, but it´s annoying because they are even there if skype is not running.

Oh well. If you have a solution for him on how to sync the Memo app with his google account to get his email contacts saved there and a solution how my skype contacts will be stored in the memo app but not in the contact list, we both would really appreciate it.
Beside this he first would need the Memo app to get installed on his phone, as there is no memo app present in CM9.
Btw.

Not sure what´s wrong with you all of the sudden, but putting someone words into his mouth he never used is not a helpful answer to a legit question.

[Q] How to select which joined contact & picture show in contact list?

Can't believe I can't figure this out.
When you have a joined contact, and have contact pictures from several sources (for example Facebook and LinkedIn where the same person has 2 different pictures), how can you pick which source is used for the picture? Seems to randomly pick one I can't figure out how to change it.
Similarly, how can you pick which source is used for the name display in the contact list?
For example, I have one contact (changing names):
"Jill (Smith) Jones" is how this person identifies herself on LinkedIn (so I can't edit).
"Jill Jones" is how she identifies herself on Facebook (so I can't edit).
I also have an Exchange record for her, which I can make her name be whatever I want.
In Contacts (sorted by last name), her entry is at the beginning under #, as "(Smith) Jones, Jill". I want to pick either the "Jones, Jill" from Facebook or what I have on Exchange.
This is just from what I've noticed between my contacts with GMail photos and FB photos...Your contact list photo will default to the pic you highlighted first before joining with lets say their FB contact info. For example; I have Joey with a Gmail photo and then he's in my contact list as Joe P from FB. If I click on Joey and merge, it will use that photo instead of the Joe P photo from FB. Again, this is just what I noticed. Maybe someone else can offer more help.
