Hi all,
I received a new Desire (and man, do I luuuurve it! ) and need to transfer everything from the "old" one (well, 2 weeks old) and couldn't find a free app that would backup everything ok. I used to have Sprite Backup on my previous HTCs courtesy of O2, and it always did a brilliant job. So I purchased the paid-for version on the Market, currently 2.0 which didn't work at all on the Desire, as reported in some comments.
What a useless bunch they are. I contacted them about a week ago and they confessed 2.0 doesn't work with the Desire, but they think they have a fix and sent me a 2.1 alpha (yes, alpha). They were right in part, the backup worked seamlessly. But then when I tried to restore the data on the new phone, Sprite Backup force-closed on the System Settings restore and I lost everything that was on the 7 home screens, and the HTC Sense widgets are simply gone for good. Trying to restore any item (System Settings, Contacts, Messages etc.) usually ends up either in force close or fail + bug report, and when it doesn't it says it was successful but actually restored nothing at all...
I've been trying to contact Sprite Software ever since, last time was 2 days ago, but they're not replying to me any more. Now I want my money back, I shouldn't have to pay for a service I never got, not mentioning the trouble and hours trying to fix my backup. Eventually I purchased MyBackup Pro which did a brilliant job at it, even though it doesn't backup the Home screens and my Sense widgets are still missing as they're not listed in my installed apps because they came as standard.
So sorry to go about it the long way, but I write for 2 reasons:
- For one, do not give your money to Sprite, at least not until they fix this problem and boost up their support service.
- And most importantly, how do I get my widgets back? Since they come as standard, they're not on the Market or anywhere else I looked. Or could I maybe factory-reset the phone and restore again but this time with MyBackup Pro? I was afraid that it might mess up the T-Mobile settings like it did on my old Polaris with O2, they could never fix the MMS settings after that (not that I receive that many anyway).
Help and advice much appreciated, thanks a lot in advance (well thanks NOT Sprite Software!). Happy Desiring all.
Jay
I experienced something similar with spirit, I simply factory reset the handset and it was fine.
That worked fine! No issues at all, even all the T-Mobile stuff was still there. Got my widgets back, I'm even shocked how good the hard reset is compared to WinMo, it's so stress-free that I could even imagine trying out a few custom ROMs without having to worry about getting it back in order if it goes wrong.
So happy I switched to Android, but I still haven't found a good backup app for the Desire. Sprite still ignoring me...

I believe I was the one who first reported that 2.0 wouldn't work on the Desire 3 weeks ago. They originally asked me to download spritediagnostics from the Market, run it as soon as 2.0 crashed and email them the generated crash log. I did this and a few days later they sent me the 2.1Alpha. This worked on my Desire but wiped my HTC Sense widgets same as you. I reported the problem to them but had to Hard Reset to get them back. I can't say I've had the same poor customer service problems though as they've always responded very quickly even been helpful.
Anyhow, it took me days to get my phone back to how I like it so I'll not be using Sprite Backup again until they sort out the Sense widgets problem - there's no benefit to it over HTC's own on board backup.

The internal Storage Folder & Contents Routinely disappears on my PDA2K. The only way to restore the folder is by doing a hard reset. After doing so, the contents of the storage folder re-appear as well.
Any ideas??
to my it happened to me several weeks ago the same thing...
And several times it has already spent...
but still nobody has told me anything
That you program you had installed in the Storage...

Okay, this has happened to me 4 times now in 1 weekend. Does anyone know what is going on here?
I hate this reset, sprite, use for a bit, gone again, etc business.
Driving me nuts.
Someone please help.
Well, when the battery gets lower, it shuts down the SDIO slot. Could that be it?

No we are not talking about the SDIO Memory. I am talking about the internal storage. It just goes away until you hard reset.
Well I figured out what was causing it, but I still don't know why. I installed the newest version of WebIS Mail 2.1, and when retrieving mail, it pauses, after that the storage is gone, then it's good old hard reset and sprite to the rescue. Funny thing is nothing is deleted and after a sprite restore it goes back to normal. But the story continues the next time I try and retrieve mail.
So what I did was store the mail folder on my SDIO (yes it is brutaly slow), and now it works fine.
Any thoughts?
Registry
Can you please take a look at your registry?
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Loader]
Does it read : \Release\\Storage\Windows ?
If it does not maybe you would like to try importing the attached key.
Just a note here, that should read,
Does it read : \Release\\Storage\Windows\ ?
and not
Does it read : \Release\\Storage\Windows ?
I believe.
Sounds to me as if you mail program is over writing your storage, trying to store too much info their. This is normal behavior with this type of storage.

Is there anyway to enable it again??
I'm not thinking when the battery is low, I'm thinking to try and re enable SDIO Slot when Windows cant see the SDIO card.
It's the funniest thing, i often loose the SD card in windows, but somehow when i'm running TomTom 3.7 which is installed on the SD Card, it never fails once it's running even though i'm sometimes not able to access the SD Card with file explorer.
So somehow it's there for TomTom onces it's running, but not for Windows???
Woops. Looks like I can't read. Sorry.
This 'internal storage' disappearing issues also happened on my Xda IIs (HK WWE), now with 1.33 + 1.06, in the past few days as well.... SINCE I installed the following two programs.
1. O2 Plus 1.6 - cracked by someone with his/her signature on the 'About page'
2. Tweak2K2 3.4
I am pretty sure that's the hacked O2 Plus does that. Since I had my splash screens customized on my IIs initially and after installed O2 Plus 1.6, after a soft reset, the 2 splashed will revert to O2 splashes then after some time, 'internal storage' disappeared.
Restored the unit back to the stage that I had version 1.5-hacked, never had a problem since. However, right after uninstalled 1.5 & reinstalled 1.6, same disaster happened again. Tried 3 times in a roll, never missed. Dont think that's the problem with Tweak2K2. Not an expert on manually tweaking the registry, but that's what I found out. I am back to 1.5-hacked & Tweak2K2 3.4. And running without a problem. Did you guys put on the O2 Plus 1.6-hacked or had it on before?

I'm pretty sure we are both wrong. Because I am running 1.6 right now, and I've been running all day with no problems. I am also running Tweak2K2 3.4. My problem disappeared when I set the WebIS Mail 2.1 mail storage folder to a SDIO card instead of the internal storage.
Someone, please help with this. There is a bigger culprit here, and I don't think Cabrio or I have a proper conclusion.
But I will try uninstalling 1.6, reinstalling Mail 2.1 and try it again. I just hate all this installing and uninstalling bit.
Cheers!
I believe that the problem is due to some applications you might be using.
I am experiencing problems with files disappearing/getting corrupt on mu SD-Card, where I installed all my apps and just found out that at least part of the responsability was a certain program...
Fact is that some tools/apps are not properly tested and have bug's that can mess up the filesystem, plus you should not try to use hacked/cracked programs, as they might contain routines that cause this effects on purpose.
Cheers,
vma
Another approach
I don't think this is a rogue app.
I have had the same problem dating to the first synch I did this morning.
My files won't synch - they seem unable to complete the synch. Active synch won't "stop" in mid process - and when I remove the XDA from the cradle, it won't soft reset.
A hard reset maintains the contents of "My Documents" which is not what it's meant to do.
Having spent several hours on this, I am starting to suspect that the culprit is to do with the time change. The Calender can deal with it, contacts and notes can deal with it.
Files can't. And when it fails, it leaves the XDA unstable.
It's only my working theory. But three iPaq users in the same office had a similar issue and all had to hard reset and restore - which fixed their problem.
Users who don't synch with their local machine (i.e synch with exchange are fine). Users with earlier versions of Pocket PC are fine.
Hope this helps. I was expecting every iPaq user in the world to be up in arms - so maybe I'm wrong. Its where I'm looking now though.
Spoke too soon!
Okay, so I really have to learn to let things ride for a couple of days, before saying "No, mine is fine". Well and the story goes...
I woke up this morning, reached over to my trusty (ya right) XDA, and baam, it was just sitting there. Wouldn't do anything. I sat there, thought for a sec, thought about the last backup I had done, and off to the 2 button holy grail we go (power+reset). Restored, with sprite, uninstalled O2 Plus 1.6, and now I will sit and wait again, till tomorrow morning. I think I might have to buy this sprite backup program, it's saved my a$$ more than 6 times this week alone.
Okay, so back to the drawing board. My Plan is this.
All I need O2 Plus for is the auto msn sign in, everytime GPRS is enabled or a phone call is ended. Is there any way to do this without the O2 plus app?
I will not install O2 Plus again, I will leave everything alone as is and I am going to start uninstalling 1 app at a time.
BTW, PhoneDashboard also screwed up a few days ago, it would just sit there and process like mad. I uninstalled it and everything is fine now.
And though hacked software could have anti-piracy code inside it, but if the app has bugs why would I buy it? Fix the bugs, make it decent enough to be worth the price you are asking then I will gladly buy it. It's the same reason why I wouldn't buy Windows, I only have it cause it came free with my system
ok..got some more info about our problem..this doesnt fix our problem but i just thought you guys should know, after you hard reset theres 4 shortcuts in the startup folder they are for the permanent save contacts, tasts apointments, connections. you get that flash manager error cause the permanent save program cant save it cause that was suppose to be in the Storage Folder..and the Storage Folder wont allow you to add delete or view files in it..i know ther are files in there cause if you look in memory you'll see that its ocuping 40+mb, then after a while or until your xda hangs the Storage Folder disappears
How can we unlock/view this folder? just like the Extended_ROM folder unlocker, i bet when we unlock this folder before it disappears everything will be fixed (YEA RYT!!!). well at least one problem down..
i forgot to tell you guys after you Hard reset try deleting that 4 permanentsave shortcut..you'll feel your erge to kick the crap out of your IIs a little less.
yes I always do that. that and the STK.lnk
So I uninstalled O2 Plus 1.6, and been running since yesterday morning with no problems yet. Storage is still there and things are running normally. If this goes on for another day or two, I will be convinced that O2 Plus caused the problem.
what else did you do? mine always disapears after the first soft reset..
It just happened to me for the first time while listening to music with PocketMVP. Storage disappeared and had to do a hard reset. I'm glad I had Sprite and a current backup handy. I also had O2 Plus 1.6 installed just a few hours before this happened. So as you guys suggested, I uninstalled O2 Plus 1.6, removed the 5 permanentsave files and STK.
Before I installed O2 Plus, my PPC was very stable. I only had to reset when my memory was running low since I refuse to buy an SD Card fewer than 1gig. We will see what happens in a few days.
nomadman..could you upload your backup? or maybe could upload a Flush image of your current running OS?(http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=151 ) PLEASE help man..cause that myt fix my storage problem.
Phone is a few days old and pretty much experience the cprog.exe problem every time I get on the net. Does anyone know if upgrading to 6.5 will get rid of that nuisance of should I deal with it before upgrading?
If you flash and install a fresh ROM then you shouldn't have any errors.
If you'd like, you could start by clearing the memory (Hard Reseting) the phone and the message should clear up. But maybe you installed an app that triggered the error so it might come back once you re-install it.
Either way, don't forget to backup your info as it will wipe everything out from contacts to any music and files saved to the main memory, anything in your microSD should fine.
Good luck!

That issue is believed to be caused by programs/apps dragging their feet when closing. If you want to do something about it now before upgrading, you can simply go into settings and disable error reporting...you won't get the messages any more, and everything should still work ok (based on historical evidence). However, since the cause is software-based, flashing to the new ROM should sidestep the issue since you're completely replacing the entire software package, and not messing with it beforehand shouldn't cause it to stick around and haunt you in 6.5.
Thanks guys. I was hoping a ROM replacement would help. Actually, no apps or programs installed yet. All I've done is sync contacts, calendar, notes, to do, and some Word files. Here's hoping 6.5 will work out fine. Thanks again.
So my Dinc which I bought on launch day blew the front speaker yesterday. I called Verizon and they are shipping me a brand new Dinc out today. My question is, I have already rooted my phone and installed like 50 paid/free apps on it with tons of other crap, settings, data, etc. I have made multiple nandroid backups and titanium backups. Can I just save the backups on my SD card then get my hands on the new Dinc, root that one as well then use my backups on the SD card to just load everything on to the new phone so I don't have to go through the process of re-setting up my entire phone again? Do I have to repurchase all my paid apps again?Any advice would be appreciated, thanks guys.
I think you should be good with a restore. That is what I did when I got my replacement....the paid apps are attached to your user name so you shouldn't have a problem with them

Thank you for the quick reply. So basically I should just get the new phone, root it, install titanium backup, then install my SD card from the old Dinc to the new Dinc and run the backup? That will insall all my old settings, data, and apps?
I'm just looking to make this phone switch as easy and painless as possible. Thank you.
I did what you're outlining above without any issues.....Although I've read that the new SLCD phones (Hardware Version 0003) aren't working with ClockWork. I don't know if there's a fix, but be sure to check your Ver prior to rooting so that you're not creating a problem for yourself. You might want to search around to see if there's a fix for the CWM/SLCD devices.....

I told the CSR rep that I wouldn't accept the phone if it arrived and had an SLCD screen. He assured me that this one did have an AMOLED screen though. If it arrives and isn't AMOLED I will just purchase a new front speaker off ebay and replace it on my old phone so this transferring process will then be moot, but if the phone is an AMOLED one when it arrives (fingers crossed) I would then be transferring everything between phones.
Well maybe not
I am on my DINC # 3 and had transferred a Nandroid from 1->2 and then 2->3. At that time I asked the same question on this board and was advised by Adrynaline (I think) that this is bad, as certain information carries forward, and if they recycle your prior DINC and put it back into operation, you BOTH will have phones which are identified the same.
I am NOT saying that the EIN etc is the same, and I leave that for a proper search of this forum. I am saying that it was said that SOME information carries over, and they they had run a test of using a nandroid on another Dinc and then messed with each other's phone.
I can confirm, however, one truth to this. I installed Shazam on Dinc # 1, and it carried through to Dinc # 2 and Dinc # 3 on the nandroid. When they went to grandfathering prior installs, my Dinc # 3 still had the grandfather. When I read the post, restored the virgin Dinc # 3 nandroid, and reinstalled, I was no longer grandfathered. This means that whatever information was tracked by Shazam to determine your phone did change, on the same hardware, based on a Nandroid restore.
Adrynalyne found that the android_id of both phones would be the same. As such, apps can be involunatrily pushed to either phone (using AppBrain, for instance) by either user. In short, it's possible that one could actually end up getting unwated apps on their phone or inadvertntly subsidizing paid apps for someone else..
So I received the new Dinc and it was an AMOLED screen. I quickly rooted the phone then downloaded Titanium backup. I transfered my memory card to the new phone and ran the backup. It restored EVERY one of my apps and ALL of my system settings and data. I didn't even have to re set up my wallpaper. Everything went smoothly and it's basically the same exact phone as my old phone just with a working speaker! Thanks guys for the help
I've been trying ( seemingly unsuccessfully ) to troubleshoot an odd problem on my EVO that I was hoping to get some help on. Hoping somebody else has had a similar issue and found a fix because I'm pretty frustrated at this moment. Basically what I'm seeing it this : sometimes ( far too often ) but definitely not always, I have trouble either answering incoming calls and also interacting with texts through Handcent SMS. Given what happens I think they're related. On the calls issue what happens is that the phone rings and I try to slide down to answer but either the slider doesn't move at all or just moves a bit. As soon as the phone stops ringing I can then hit my power button, wait a second and then hit it again and then unlock just fine and I usually then call said person back. Similarly, sometimes when I get a pop up text message from Handcent I can't reply to it or close it, it's as if the screen is locked. Once again, if I hit my power button once and then again and then unlock I can close the message or reply to it. I've tried uninstalling all kinds of stuff like Beautiful Widgets, SetCPU and other such stuff thinking that a low level program or homescreen widget was causing the problem but that doesn't seem to have helped. The problem has now followed me from Azrael's ROM to Myn's ( which tells me it's likely not the ROMs ), so I'm guessing that it's either a configuration issue or possibly a program I have installed that's not playing nice for some reason. I've used Titanium to backup and restore between ROMs, perhaps that's part of the problem too, corruption? Other information that could be important...I have 002 hardware, I'm obviously rooted, and here's a link to my current stable of apps courtesy of AppBrain. If anybody can help I would greatly appreciate it!
http://www.appbrain.com/user/kkryter/apps-on-the-phone
Well it seems that the only constant between everything is Handcent. You mentioned uninstalling just about everything but that program. You should try uninstalling Handcent and seeing if your issue with answering calls goes away.

haa right? common sense..
Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried that, went to Chomp and the same thing happened to it! I've done a lot of reading and troubleshooting and one common theme was that Titanium Backup can cause such things as it can drag along corruption from ROM to ROM if you have it in any of your apps. Given this I finally put some serious work into this yesterday : I wiped everything but music and pics off of my SD card, re-flashed Myn's 2.2 RL4 ( after wiping data, cache and dalvik of course ), and then proceeded to manually install most of my apps off of the Market, some I just didn't bother with. Even after all of that it's still doing the same thing! Went to King CFS 11 kernal today as well. At this point I'm getting really frustrated, if anybody has any suggestions it would be very much appreciated!
I've done more reading today and found tons of similar reports from others, especially at AndroidForums...but really no real answers! The best I found were workarounds such as using a program called 'Easy Answer' I think. I can only imagine at this point that it's some odd combination of programs and how they deal with the builds I've tried. The last thing that I think has much hope is that I emailed the author of the program that I have to use due to low Sprint signal in my work building called 'Roam Control'. It basically allows you to 'force roam' as you used to be able to do on just about all phones but can't within native Android. Perhaps it doesn't get along with newer kernals or builds? It worked fine for me for several months on older stuff. Anyway, if anybody can think of anything or find anybody else that has come up with a solution because they're better searchers than me I sure would appreciate it!
I've worked in the IT business for many years, and troubleshooting step number 1 is usually to ask 'what's changed?'...I've tried to figure that out without much luck so far, but something just occurred to me, could the problem be deeper such as Baseband version or PRI version or something like that? It seems like I did upgrade all of those just a while back using a flashable file, my current values are as follows, perhaps they don't agree with my 0002 hardware which is why they were never offered to me automatically? Can't recall what I was on prior to that.
Baseband 2.15.00.09.01
PRI 1.77_003
PRL 60672
Hello,
The vibration motor has suddenly failed on my phone. It now hardly vibrates at all and is extremely loud.
The problem seems more or less identical to this one watch?v=ZPqGD2uGG4o if you are curious.
The sound doesn't come from the speakers and I have no reason to believe it could possible be a software issue. Ie no recent installs or updates.
First thing I did was contact google. They had me boot into safemode to see if the problem persists. It does. However they now require that I reformat the phone.
This leads me to my question on how I can backup ALL app data. I have 400+ apps and it would suck to have to reset them all and or lose data.
I can sync phone contacts and such but without root I don't have a way of backing everything up.
Or is there another way to get Google to actually get me a replacement?
Thank you for your time.
If you're bootloader unlocked then root it and use Titanium backup, save it to the computer afterwards. Then unroot and factory reset as they ask. I'd probably not do that but if you have to get a new device, well then you have to. Maybe there is another way, but I've not seen it. Non root backup apps don't backup and restore your data reliably. If you are bootloader locked then I do believe you're out of luck. Pretty lousy of them to make you do that. If they just sent you a new one then you could copy from the old to the new. Maybe suggest that to them.
When you set up the new pixel using info from an old device, how much data is transferred? That may be an option.
I just went from rooted with custom ROM to full stock unrooted. All of my apps restored from the play store. I had to log into a few, but others seemed to retain app data, like Strava for instance. Google's back up seems to be getting better and better. I use SMS backup and restore for SMS/MMS because Google's backup service does not support MMS.
Well in case anyone is wondering... I bit the bullet and did the factory reset. The problem still exists of course.
Rant ahead, sorry/
There is an odd sound coming from within the device itself (not the speakers) and Google blames software? Is there some hidden second speaker inside?? It quite dumb and infuriating.
Even if there was doubt you would think running in safe mode which disables all the third party software would be enough to prove it.
It took me hours to copy everything and make sure everything was backed up. I don't blame the rep, he told me he HAD to make me do this. Honestly, I kinda wish I would have just told him I did it and it didn't work since there was no way it could have been software.
Well now a refurbished replacement is on the way. Which isn't ideal either. It has an issue that isn't too uncommon. I can find a dozen posts online about it which means there is probably hundreds of people with this problem at least. Now I have to put up with a refurbished which probably has a battery worse off as well as who knows what else.
This whole phone feels rushed, to be honest, and I regret buying it.
I won't be buying any more google hardware unless either they change in the future or the particular device has months of reviews.
/End rant

I didn't know you could unroot and make it seem like it didn't happen. This is what I should have done. Thanks for the suggestion.
"If they just sent you a new one then you could copy from the old to the new. Maybe suggest that to them" I suggested this to them several times. One guy told me he wasn't allowed to even rma it until I reformat despite there being no way its a hardware issue.

If I had the replacement phone up front then transfering is easy. Google even has a built in mechanism, but google wouldn't RMA it and have one sent out until AFTER resetting it. A lot of data is synced but my 400+ apps, none of them seem to sync via the backup and restore feature. I also have 80+gbs of other files beside pictures. I bought the 128gb for a reason... Thanks for the suggestion.
