will Desire also have Wireless N? - Desire General

Various media have reported that a video is demonstrating Nexus's wireless N connecting ability. Since it is said that Desire shares much the same hadrware as Nexus, will we have that highspeed connection too?

I was wondering the same, wil the desire get "N" as well ??

Can someone enlighten me on what "N" is?
I have searched for it on the internet, and from what I can gather it is "Wifi incorporating numerous sources to make the speed faster?"

I've not managed to find the exact wireless chip that is in the Desire, but I'd be amazed if it was different from the N1.
The problem is going to be waiting for HTC to get a ROM with a sensified version of 2.2. Though if we are rooted by then, then I guess I could live without sense for a while.
I have to say, it seems as though rooting the Desire is a lot harder than people first thought.

You serious? Wireless n (300Mb/s), as opposed to Wireless g (56Mb/s). 802.11n. Faster, better range, more battery drain etc.

Uh yea I am
I don't use WiFi, so when I started reading articles about the Nexus One and
"N" I wondered why it was such an amazing find
Guess I know my answer now.

Hi guys, N is a wireless standard (read here) but all you need to know is, it's faster than your current wireless connections.
Don't quote me on this but I believe it may already be activated on our phones.
It seems Google had a bunch of stuff that this chip could do turned off...like for instance the FM radio, which we have working.

i just checked and it's not
i set my router to wireless N only and the phone failed to connect
setting it back to g + n and the phone connects.
in the router setup, it shows the wireless session for the phone as 802.11g

Wireless 802.11n standard currently works on the Nexus One and interestingly, both the Nexus One and the Desire use the same Broadcom BCM4329 chip. Hopefully it will be activated in the next 2.2 firmware update (if that ever happens )

redrazr - sorry mate, just realised I probably sounded kinda rude.
Anyhow, wireless n would be a big improvement, particularly in range and reliability. From what I understand, it seems the desire HARDWARE is capable (with the right driver) but that the current software (Android) is not.

Rooting is gaining super user access to you phone (or system OS really)
The general concept of a root is a suer with no restrictions, able to modify files, complete certain commands, and in the case of the Dream(G1) and Magic(MYtouch), allows a user to overclock thier phones
it basically means that you can run jailbroken apps and such and gain access to features like tethering and multi touch
Per default Android limits certain access to hardware on the phone for programmers / app makers.
'root'ing means that the whole android experience on your phone is running as 'the administrator who can do everything'. So now applications have access to the SD cards for example, or read the SMS database, and access the power management and processor for tweaks. That kind of thing.
'root'ing is needed for a lot of 'tweak' apps, but also for running custom ROMs I believe.

No word on rooting, but a lot of the reasons for rooting on previous android devices are solved on Hero
Bigger space on device for Apps
Tethering ability built in
Ability to clear Market Cache
Ability to clear Browser Cache
It actually has a hero ROM on it already (LOL)

more irritated with google for not having App2SD functionality in the FIRST android release.
if it wasn't for the bogus 512mb "ROM limit" on installing apps, i wouldnt be awaiting froyo with such baited breath.
Yep been waiting all weekend! We should put a post when someone actually gets the 1st update from htc so we know!

The weekend is not yet finished. So, I see no reasons to get upset.
And anyway, they might have really started to roll-out, as HTC Germany says.

What limited would that be, and because as far as i'm aware the limit is hardware - the Dell Streak running 1.6 has 2gb available for apps storage.

I really think some people need to step away from the internet and go out and have some fun. If it's here when you get back then you can install; if it's not then not.
Surely an update to your mobile phone can not be the most important thing in your lives...
Not in the least bothered really when it comes, today, tomorrow, next week.
I already have Froyo and its running sweet.
How many stupid Desire users does it take to screw in a lightbulb ?
The be honest I am more irritated by dumb-fu-ks who have more time than brain cells and have to whinge about everything including the firmware release of a completely functional mobile phone. Even worse is the fact that two mouse clicks away is another section of the forum where they could easily download and run about a dozen versions of Android 2.2 hacked/packed/delivered with all the bells and whistles.
So people put the fu-king phone down, chill out, go outside and take a breath of fresh air. You will live longer ....
THE UPDATE WILL COME WHEN IT COMES..... Jumping up and down about it, checking the OTA update on the phone every 2 microseconds and making another 1.4 billion new threads won't make it appear any faster...
Next instalment in the new pointless thread forum - "I fu-ked up my phone when updating the OTA ! Help !!!", "Why won't the HTC OTA work on my Orange/Virgin/crap branded Desire" and my favourite "What's an OTA", oh and another "Anyone got Froyo Update?" you do have a point here. but: why do you get so angry?
you accuse them of having nothing else to do than wait for the froyo release. yet, you fail to convey this in an appropriate manner: In order to make them realize that they are poor souls (whose sole purpose in life is a phone software update), you better tell them in a way they don't perceive as *****ing and hating.
however, the way you get all angry about them raises the suspicion that you yourself have little else to do in your free time. complaining about them doesn't help anyone!

CDMA HTC Desire?

Anyone else have the new CDMA version of the HTC Desire? I've had mine for a couple of days, and love it. I have noticed that this version seems to lack the FM radio that the GSM version came with.
Also, the CDMA version came with "Android 2.1 update 1" and has 720p video recording enabled.
Has anyone else noticed differences? Thoughts, etc?
Does yours take sim cards?

Just checked the specs from the htc site on the us cellular version. It only has 384 MB ram. CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was gonna get this phone when it comes to cellular south which will be the same CDMA version. I guess I may have to wait on the galaxy s that cell south will be getting.
I dunno. my us cell desire says it has 295mb of ram free right now in advanced task killer. good bit of stuff running too. maybe it does only have 384, but i would think i would have a lot less free than that considering my droid 1 was almost always at 15-20mb free with 256mb. and that was a vanilla rom. no htc sense.
I think it could be a typo on htc site.

Absolutely not. In fact it is the fastest stock android device I have ever used. And I have had or used almost all of the decent ones.
Just returned my Galaxy s (captivate) to att and switched to USCC last week to get the desire (way better service here).
Desire flat out kicks the galaxy's ass in everything except display. However, its still a very good display.
Not to mention I prefer the desires size a little more. Just a great phone.
ONLY bad thing about it is there wont be any damn developer support being on a small carrier.

Glad to here that. Especially helps hearing this from someone who has used both the desire and galaxy s. The size is a big thing for me. The galaxy i think is just too big for me.
Awesome!!!! Now if Cellular south would just hurry up and release the thing.
Thanks purezero
Yes, I got the phone back on Friday. Love it. it has 512MB ROM and 576MB RAM. I'm on the phone waiting to speak with a USCC engineer for more info on potential 2.2 Froyo update. *fingers crossed*
I will also continue looking on the forums here. If anyone knows a thread that would be helpful in this and shorten my search, I would appreciate it. 1st post on the forums here. forums look like they have good potential for me.
Cheers!
Just got this as well.. LOVE IT!I can't do anything to slow it down and now that uscc has 3g roaming on vz and sprint, it is SICK. Now hopefully it can be rooted and custom roms will come out for it soon..
i just confirmed with the u s cellular engineer. we are going to get 2.2... however it's going to be at least a month before we see anything, most likely two. The good news is at least we now know It's coming.

Mine was pre-ordered. I got a text from T-Mobile 2 days ago letting me know to expect my G2 to arrive within 7 days.
After actually reading that Oct 16 launch article in the link above, the only thing I can figure is that the G2 will be officially released to all customers. New or existing customers. The T-Mobile guy told me on the phone that it would be arriving at my house around the 6th. So, I dunno.. It would not surprise me any if it didn't come out till November 16th. Nothing about the phone companies ever comes as a surprise. But, I am still having fun customizing my TP2 and messing around with the xandroid on the sd card.

Not sure about the comment about not wanting to give up the ability to customize (like you can on the TP2). There is lots of customization available on Android, on an OS that is vastly smoother, more stable, and has tons of support from app developers.
One of the few things stopping me from going to Android, is the lack of a ATT-compatible handset with a hardware keyboard. And I might be willing to overlook the keyboard requirement.

People with iPhones have the same description of the screen keyboard: "not that bad". The screen keyboard is never described as "good". "Not that bad" isn't good enough for me. A hardware keyboard is simply faster, more accurate, and therefore a superior input method. It does result in a slightly thicker form factor, but that's a trade-off that is more than worthwhile, IMO. Especially coming from the best hardware keyboard on a phone (the TP2), its pretty tough for me to make a switch to a screen keyboard.

That's the phone that started me on android, had two G1's, one rooted and one stock. Was fun back in those days with all the development going on. Cyanogen Mod and waiting for the weekly updates, can't remember who but I did some testing for one of the recoveries used on the G1.
I had an N1, but only after the original HTC Desire as that was more widely available in the UK and, after using both, somewhat more refined than the N1. That said, the physical trackball was far easier to use than the optical on the Desire.
I was also a fan of the Nexus S and its curved front, but I know I'm in the minority on that one

Second post in this thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/nostalgia-overload.4354343/post-85857495
My first Android was the HTC Droid Eris (rooted, of course). The trackball was interesting although it gave me problems eventually, and I then had to abuse it to get it completely disabled instead of giving me the constant problems when I wasn't trying to use it.

JesusFreak I believe was the recovery Kingpin, right?
Yes I had to go to Columbus, Oh. to buy the G1 because the Cincinnati area didn't have 3G and T-Mobile only sold the phone in 3G coverage areas.

This wallpaper takes me back to the first Nexus device. Hard to believe how far phones have come since the first one. Anyone else around since the G1 era?

I am. Rooted my HTC G1 and loved it. Then the Nexus One was launching and at the time my phone was still fairly new considering how long we used to keep them before smart phones.
Since my wife (gf then) wanted to save money on our bill she got this garbage Samsung dumb phone when I got the G1. So when the Nexus launched I had zero issue buying it immediately because she HATED that phone and wanted mine.
Can't blame me, I tried to talk her into a G1 (she later upgraded to a Rezound, god I miss HTC) she wouldn't budge though lol.
I would be constantly flashing new firmware and Kernel's on my Nexus. I barely ever used it I was doing it so often just because of how cool it was. Eventually the scene started to slow down and I got a couple non Google phones then a pixel xl which was my last until the 6 pro. My least fav Nexus was the Samsung Galaxy Nexus... Go figure since the last 3 phones I've had and come to eventually hate were all Samsung snapdragon devices that couldn't be rooted. I should have imported one instead. Apparently there is a method but it's not public afaik and it costs too much to be worth it and you have to mail them your phone... No ty.
Hopefully Google doesn't start preventing modification because that would be a damn shame. Seeing where the scene is today compared to then is already hard enough. We went from too many firmwares and Kernel's to not enough and it seemed to happen really fast too. I had a bad feeling the day they announced cyanogen was going to come pre installed on whatever that phone was. So many other people based their modified firmware on cyanogen but the tweaks some of them made were genius. Stuff Google is just adding now.
The only bad memory of the scene I have is when I bought an nVidia shield portable off of eBay and the guy didn't say that he installed lineage to it and I don't remember if I couldn't get it back to it's original state for some reason or what but I was not happy, especially since those things were rare and I had found one in we great shape but I couldn't use anything but moonlight on it... Owell.
