This is my first android phone & loving it, pissing on the iphone OS. So glad i got rid of my iphone 3gs the call quality was awful as well as the locked down OS.
So for the nitty gritty part...
How can I Gen' a Goldcard for the HTC Desire.
Has the Desire been rooted, do i need it rooted to backup carrier (t-mobile) rom?
I am wanting to backup the carrier rom and replace with generic htc rom any help advice?
Thanks guys...
step by step help would be great.

Its also my 1st android device and ive read how to make a gold card but so far I cant get myself to try to do it.
Installing generic software doesnt require the desire to be rooted, though it be good if you have an original t-mobile rom just in case you have to send back your phone.
It's pretty easy to made a goldcard. You'll find all the information you need in this forum.
The only problem is that it is not currently possible to revert to the T-mobile version.
I am in the POOH!
I took the 2.2 update OTA on my T-Mobile HTC Desire and now it continually reboots after a while but will not connect to the mobile network and WiFi justs shows error and will not even turn on!
Anybody got the gold card fix working with T-Mobile?
Cheers

I am getting my new Desire today from Orange as an upgrade. I have previously rooted couple Win Htc's but never had or tried to root Android. As soon as I remember the nightmares Orange modifications were causing on my old N95 I don't even want to boot before rooting it to generic HTC ROM. The problem is that I am a bit worried turning my new phone into the paperweght. Is there a real danger or more of a myth? What precautions should I take?
You can't root the Desire yet, you can only reflash the ROM using a GoldCard
sorry if I sound a bit silly with this next question, but does that mean that i can't brick it by just flashing it?
Yeah. I recently flashed my Orange branded HTC Desire with the generic ROM and all I've noticed is a 30% increase in performance.
guide please? really interested in doing this to fix the low headphone volume issue on my t-mob one.
ignore that: just done it. once got the adb drivers installed and realised that there's a space after "cat" in the adb command (!) this was really easy. Took two goes to successfully save changes to goldcard with hex editor for no particular reason, so got a scary Error 131 on first boot. Redit the changes, rebooted phone, reapplied update - all went swimmingly. Just applying OTA update now.
Thanks guys.

Hi All, Ive just moved from my (Jailbreak) iPhone to the HTC Touch so I am new to android and flashing.
Please could somebody point me in the right direction of "how to" and what I need (files etc.) to do to flash my Vodafone HTC Desire...
Many Thanks in advance!
does refalshing the rom etc delete the phones memory?

yep, wipes it completely. it'll look/behave like it did when you first got it, although without any network branding.
I have flashed my one using goldcard. Works great I can't notice any difference in performance, but probably it's because I didn't spend more than 20 minutes with Orange "improved" OS. Anyway it was quite easy to do and really worth it.
My m8 made a gold card & swapped the original T-Mobile firmware to the Generic version. Not only is now debranded but I noticed my phones running quicker then before & I have proper sound through my earphones as the LouderVolumeHack was a waste of time... so long as the gold cards made right an you follow the setup guide properly it should work fine.
Yeah, agree with whats being said here.
Fairly straight forward to use the Goldcard mehtod to flash the generic ROM, just ensure you read the instructions throughly and don't rush the steps.
Had my golcard done, phone flashed and set back up within 20 minutes, runs exactly the same but no nasty orange icons or demo games that I never asked for.
Hi i'm seriusly considering flashing my Orange branded desire to generic HTC rom.
I have read a lot of forums so get the gist of what I need to do but have heard that people find they are unable to use their wifi once flashed, can anyone confirm this is the case some one who has flashed them selves would be cool.
If you came accross this problem was it easy to fix and how did you do it?
Can anyone point me to the latest WWE Rom for the desire?
Thanks in advance.
PS any tips of links to a decent guide would be awsome, i've read the stuff on modaco but still find it slightly confusing.
Hi, the wifi issue was because orange 'messed' with the radio rom - easily resolved by using 'goldcard' and unlocking your phone before flashing a generic rom. i am much happier with my debranded orange desire.
I did:
Goldcard - via http://www.roothtchero.co.uk/goldcard-2
I used the sdcard supplied in the desire.
Unlocked at 8.99 in 30 mins.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300434867258
then i flashed RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4. 05.00.11_release_122704.exe from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 after that set up phone and latest update downloaded via wifi to go to version 1.21.405.2
Lots of info on goldcard and flashing on the forums here. Please note this was to go to a HTC official rom - if you want to use the custom roms here you would need to 'root' - again tons of info on that in these forums.
Would it not be £8.99 cheaper to go ahead and do everything else, then if the wifi or simlock issue appear, just flash to an older radio?
I think (may be wrong) that you would need to root to flash a radio in this scenario. Those who got the wifi issue had 2 choices, goldcard and unlock, back to stock generic, then upgrade. Or root and replace radio?
I was quiet happy to pay the 8.99 as it will be handy when i sell desire on one day, and 8.99 to be rid of orange rom is a bargain
Cheers guys for the advice you've been very helpful.
I'm going to get my self a 16gb SD card and use the 4gb sd card to create the gold.
Is there a way to back up all my current settings and stuuf to SD card with ot having to get another app, i'm sure I came accross the option to back up some where on the phone but cant find it any where now.
Hi guys/gals,
I'm going to root my Desire this weekend. I've had it for a couple of months and I want to try out different roms. But I keep having the same questions go through my head when I read the rooting guides and the flashing guides posted. I just really need to clarify a few things before I start to mess with the phone.
First, my desire was bought through VodaFone, so from what I can make out it's a Branded/Unlocked phone, correct? (meaning that the phone has a specific VF rom on it but it take sim cards from other carriers. I have not tested with another sim as of yet but form the VF forums it sounds like it's true)
So when I root the phone do I need a gold card or not?
Where can I get the generic 2.2 Desire rom from? (I'll get bashed for saying this but I like the sense UI)
OK whats all this talk about radio? is it just the FM radio (that I never use)?
I have been looking at using the modaco Custom rom, any good? I like the online kitchen thing...
Also I noticed that with CM6 there is Desire support (finally), can I still get CM6 with the sense UI? I just want to keep the phone how it is for now, once I get used to flashing it, then I'll try a more stock android ROM, but I have grown to like the Sense UI a lot recently.
Is there any thing else I need to know?
Oh, wavesecure.. Yay or Nay?
Thanks in advance.
First thing, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a not of the software version on the unit. If you're on a Vodafone handset it'll show x.xx.161.x, if you're lucky enough to be on a generic handset it'll show x.xx.405.x
If you're on a 161 handset you'll need to make a gold card to allow the phone to pass CID checks to flash a generic HTC ROM. If you wanna go custom then you'll need to root the phone following the instructions dotted around random forums
Hi,
I had the same. Unbranded phone from VF UK, the updated it with the branding... I rooted it and flashed Neo's custom ROM from this site and not looked back!
Here are the steps I took, but please do your own research...
1. Use unrevoked to root.
2. Get Titanium backed to backup your apps.
3. Get a ROM and Radios you want to Flash, copy it to your device. I used Neo's 1.7.1.
4. Boot into the recovery menu.
5. Do a Nandroid backup.
6. Wipe the various caches...
7. Flash the device.
8. Flash the Radios.
Was simple. Didn't need a gold card.
Search for a Vodafone thread in the Q&A is a week old. I think its call Vodafone update not Froyo. I've posted in there too. On page 2 or 3 someone has posted instructions which I carefully followed to the letter...
Good luck!

I had an iphone 3gs and decided after months of frustration with apple software that i wanted an android phone so i decided to swap my iphone for an HTC Desire....
Now, bearing in mind that i have never used android before and have no idea what I'm doing please can someone help me with reverting back to sense ui??
I have no idea if the desire was branded and so i cannot use the instructions i have seen posted here.
It is currently running OpenDesire and i really want to get it back to factory sense UI as i have no idea what i'm doing!
Thanks in advance!
Make a gold card and flash the RUU file which matches your phone (it's important to know is it AMOLED or SLCD screen, drivers are different), you could choose 2.1 or 2.2, branded or unbranded as far as I know, there is a leaked o2 branded 2.2 available.
I recently reflashed mine to unbranded 2.2, it was branded o2 before that. Really I am thinking myself of binning it and going to opendesire myself.
It is really easy to make a gold card and reflash. My only problem was I didn't have a windows PC for the actual flashing the rom part. The gold card is easy to make in linux but the flashing part won't work even running windows in a virtual machine. Lucky for me I got an old laptop to fix for someone that had XP on so I just used that.
It only takes a few minutes, my only gripe is I lost all my contacts and texts, despite 2.1 having a backup option and the backup files are there, I can't restore them.
You can use the existing microSD for the gold card, I didn't even erase it, just write the code to boot sector of the card, everything else stays the same so you don't lose anything from the card.
HTH
can anyone help me out? i rooted my desire with unrEVOked 3 (no goldcard needed) would i still need a goldcard to unroot my Desire with the RUU?
also, which RUU should i use to get back to Froyo T Mobile official?
i've looked all last night and tonight for answers for these questions,
any help would be great, thanks
If you look in the development forums there is a list of RUUs. Insert your goldcard and run the ruu relevant to your phone. Op does your desire have an Orange logo on the back?

Hi,
Will be receiving an Vodafone upgrade Desire HD soon and was wondering, what do I need to do before I can flash a custom ROM? Cheers
Try to use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003 or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
It was really helpful for rooting my vodafone locked DHD
Thanks, I have no idea how to use adb etc....
So I need to create a gold card? Then I can root and flash a custom Rom?
There is no need for a gold card on Vodafone with DHD as it will most likely be stock pretty much, as long as there is no Vodafone logo or branding

Hi
I dont have the phone yet but on the box image I can see Vodafone services like Vodafone 360 apps on the homescreen.
yes u need to create a goldcard, it's really simple follow the guide provided, because your phone will arrive with a 1.72 o .75 baseband version. And till now, goldcard option, is the only way to downgrade to 1.32. Maybe in the next days there will be something new as a new version of visionary+.
So, when I have goldcarded it, I can then root, and flash custom roms?
I'm being careful here and dont want to brick a new handset.
Your advice is appreciated
Maybe mine is different as I got mine through carphonewarehouse, in fact most likely it was different, but I had no need for a goldcard. Best of luck.

Download one of the stock Roms, not 1.15.405.1 and just connect your USB and run it, few next button clicks, wait for few min and you’re done!
I used 1.32.405.6 to debrand my vodafone phone so later on if i want to root it i can. you cant with 1.72.405.3
I spent days goggling and searching on the forum on how to remove Vodafone branded rubbish from my DHD, people saying only way is to root it bla bla bla.
After i was half way through rooting my phone got to the point of making goldcard and it took hours to get to that point reading up on rooting (still don’t understand most of it) and because of not so great step by step guide and android updating their sdk that screwed up the step by step info.

I know, that I flashed mine as soon as the NAND lock was cracked, but my advice would be to play around with it for a few days before and make sure that you want it rooting and more importantly whether you like / want Sense, it's a great device and would be a shame to waste the opportunity to get to know it in it's virgin state first, but a good start would be to read up here
Over 4 hours of hard work and its now downgraded, debranded, unlocked, fully rooted, s-off and now running a custom Rom. Last night was intense but the advice provided here meant that I had easy access to guides and tools so MANY THANKS FOLKS!
I had to do the lot!
