GSM underpowered? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

i bought a blueangel off ebay, its in rough shape but works. ive gotten wm2003,wm5,wm6 and some variant of linux, i forget which ver running on it. the main problem i have is the gsm reception is horrible. if i get any reception, which is rare, its 2bars and drops off when i attempt to make a call. it also freezes all phone functions. asin entire phone app frozen, phone settings, green/red call buttons dont respond.
now, id just assume its normal. but when its powered by the external charger, it doesnt drop out nearly as bad.
anyone have any opinions?

hmm.
i just called my 2nd phone from the ba on external power, called and connection worked fine. i unplugged it mid-call?
...
pzzzt sound went dead. lost radio signal.
anyone got any IDEAS as to why this is happening.

What radio are you using? I had reception problems before I updated, and new I have good reception.

that was my first thought. i upgraded from 1.6 to 1.15 to 1.14 to 13 to 12 then back to 15.
none of them helped the problem. it has to be something to do with power, i've looked on the motherboard and i dont see anything that looked out of place.
perhaps the battery isnt putting out enough juice? it does appear to drain fast.

Maybe. My battery would just die at about 50% Maybe a new one would help, with a new one I didn't notice any better signal (as I had no problems) but now it can make it for a while before shutting off.

Battery and GPRS connection queston

***EDIT***
Turns out it was a bad battery.
***END EDIT***
SO, I have an sx66 that will connect with little to no problem when the battery is above %50... but as soon as the battery hits that %50 (or below) mark, all bets are off, and it keeps telling me that the answering modem keeps disconnecting, or is unavailable. But, as soon as I plug it into a charger, viola, I can connect and keep going.
I'm assuming there is a setting somewhere in the registry that has to do something with something. I could understand the battery being wayyyy down, and the phone just not having the juice to connect, but this is very consistent. I also can't find any relevant posts concerning this issue.
please help.
do you have a voltage multimeter? because this sounds alot like the problems my BA have that nobody gave me any input on.
when the phone was on hte charger, i couold make calls and **** noproblem. however, when i took it off? dead. instantly, it dropped all cell reception.
i figured it was the battery, so iswapped it out. and it SEEMS to have resovled itself.
so my opinion is, swap out the battery and give that a shot. its very likely thats the problem.
if it doesnt help, try flashing it with WM5 and setting it up. that may give us some insight as to if its hardware or software.
I'm gonna go with it's a bad(ish) battery. I noticed the other evening, and again tonight (paying attention) that the battery was registering %49, but the whole unit kept cutting off as follows: do some stuff, close all with pocket nav, turn off the screen, and into my pocket. Pull it out, 5 minutes later and turn it on - to the boot screen. do whatever, turn off the screen, back in my pocket. 5 minutes later, same problem. I think the battery is registering it's capacity wrong? I'll look to see how to re calibrate.
boot screen being what, the screen alignment or what?
btu yeah. it sounds like the battery. that or the blueangels have really inconsistent radios.
tmo splash screen with the rom radio and ext rom numbers....
ass i thought this was hte otherthread lmfao.
and yeah. that same **** happend to me when i first got my imate. it's the battery.
Tried to recalibrate. not good.
I tried to cover that pin like it says in the wiki (universal's battery problem) and put the battery back in... the device wouldn't power on, so i pulled the battery and tape, and now the unit boots and all, but won't find service. at all.
Gonna try the newest radio stack, and see if that helps.
Upgrade to 1.15 saved the radio. It works now.
ohgood., you had me worried, i think its sad i care about your ba almost as much as mine.
butyeha. you should do a SD backup, theres a section in the wiki wiht the commands. then dump it with dd as an image to your pc, so incase you do **** something up you can flash from SD. of course if its a actual brick, it wont help but its a decent insurance policy.
Gotta say, God has smiled upon my cell phone situation(s).
I had to use a ****ty frankenrazr (built from parts of others) for like 2 years, and it was a phone/txtr, and that's it.
I guess for my patience, I have been rewarded with bounty... A BA, now with a camera, aluminum case, sync cables, new speaker, an a pen stylus, for about $45, and just two days ago I got a universal for some old fujitsu touchsceen computers and a little cash - about $150 in all.... Awsome
i have same problem with my MDA III from tmobile
i dont have any SD but i"ll buy 2GB
i have orginal microsoft 2003 softwere installed and i got the phone like gift
when is it charging everything works fine (wifi, gprs) but when i put out phone from USB CHARGER and go to wifi, gprs, night mode for camera or similar
IT JUST FLASHES-BLACK AND IT TURNS OFF
YEah, got a new battery, and it still cuts off at 42%. Eh...

[Q] EVO random restarts when multitasking GPS/voice - Sprint knows of this issue

I have noticed that when I am using my EVO in the car for GPS + bluetooth + charging, it can get quite warm. Especially when its sitting in direct sun. Several times now while it's sitting in my cup holder it has started blinking the LED rapidly. I checked the battery temp in the battery app I run and it was approaching 50 degrees Celsius. What is a reasonable cut off temp that I can set an audible warning with so I notice next time it starts getting really hot? 49C ? What is considered the point where an EVO is "too hot"?
Also, on a potentially related note, the EVO will often crash and restart when I'm using GPS + voice communication (on a call) + BT + charging. This seems to be the required combination of multi-tasking to replicate the restart. I do this a LOT in my car with work so I have easily replicated it several times. I called Sprint and talked with advanced tech support. Once I described the specific problem he essentially offered to send a replacement phone with almost no resistance. This led me to believe its potentially a common/known issue internally at Sprint. Once I said a few magic words (voice and GPS simultaneously), he seemed to acknowledge it was a valid issue he had some experience seeing. They replaced a 0003 unit with a hardware version 0004 unit. Unfortunately, the issue still occurs. However, it doesn't seem to necessarily be heat related as the phone isn't always hot when it happens and I don't get rapid LED lights like when it has gotten really hot. All battery use has been the normal stock battery in both hardware versions.
Background info:
For testing purposes I am using stock Sprint rom fully updated, rooted. All standard radio/kernal, etc. No overclocking or anything like that.
I do all those Multitasking things all the time. It has never crashed/rebooted, in fact I don't recall ever having a random reboot.
I rarely have it in direct sunlight, I use a ProClip most of the time (which does allow a lot of air all around it).
It does get warm doing GPS, Charging and BT Voice Call. And it barely keeps up charging while GPS Navigation is going.
It might be your charger is allowing it to charge faster than it can handle.
I run MikGinger now and ran NonSense ROM for while.
My BT is always a little flakey though. If I make a call, hang up and wait and make another voice dial call it will all work fine. If I hang up and immediately make another call the phone will disconnect headset and leave Voice Prompt on Screen. If I clear screen and click headset again it reconnects fine and all is good. Every ROM has done this including CM7, Stock and Leaked based ones.
I had this same issue on my original phone. Doing anything in the car while it charged caused it to reboot. Even after being off and cooling down, I could get it to reboot by quickly scrolling up and down in the browser. My phone would just get warmer and warmer, then reboot.
I got them to give me a replacement, and all has been fine after that. It's a white Evo, HW rev 0004. I'd recommend getting another replacement. You shouldn't have to sacrifice doing what you want in order to keep your phone running. I can now have my phone charging on a hot day while getting GPS instructions and listening to Pandora. I don't have any bluetooth stuff, but I imagine I could do that as well.

[Q] spontaneous reboots on defy+

i have just witnessed another spontaneous reboot on my defy+,
the 3rd in the last week...
the phone is stock, not rooted.
is there a way i can track this down?
Hi,
Had this issue with the first Defy Plus I received. It seemed to be related to connection to a 3g network. I just sent the phone back and got a replacement.
Regards
interesting. might be worth a shot if nothing shows up here, but the truth is that i am in 2g mode all the time..
defy+ MB526, xda premium
Had a similar problem with my defy after changing batteries. Old battery less reboot. Tap the back cover just off center towards the camera lens- reboot? I found out the length of the new battery was just a few thousandths of an inch shorter, you could hardly tell the difference with the batteries inserted just a little more play than the other. I put a piece off electrical tape and stuck it on the end opposite of the terminals. Just one thickness of electrical tape is all it took. I had also used the mc Giver Method of keeping my phone going during a flash that could have been partly attributable. Anyway, that solved my rebooting problem. The voltage just needs to drop below three and the phone will die. You could also have the battery capacity indicator out of adjustment. However if your using a defy sbf in a defy+ who knows?
If all you usually get is 2G, shut off your 3G and see if this helps. I have noticed my Defy goes a bit nuts if it searches around for 3G and finds it intermittently.

actually i have forced 2G mode, i use little data outside wifi, if i need more i simply switch manually. it extends the battery life quite nicely.
the battery and how it fits is an obvious candidate of course,
i will look into it. reading about other phone reboots, another
candidates are sim card and sd card. i will move them around
a bit as well after the next reboot. i have just gave it a throughout
massage and it did not reboot... so no easy reproducing this way.
or it's simply hw issues and/or OS glitches..
there is a defy thread where the reason was supposedly
trying to connect data when low signal..
i might never know, that's the frustrating part..
A mate from South Africa had the same problem and it was due to his old simcard
I had this problem with my defy in the beginning, and so I moved onto CM7
Also happened when i brought a cheapo battery
So you can try this
Use phone with a different sim for a day
Use phone without/another sd card for a day
Change batteries for a day
and if they all restart then take it back or flash a new rom
Some operators roms are really bad and have a lot of problems, I have very bad experience with this
Try CM 7.2 or MIUI =)

Is mi xperia play unrepairable?

Hi, to start off my xplay fell into the water
I took out the battery and used a drier on it for a long time, when i tried to use it it worked fine however it wouldnt charge battery.
As soon as i was able i changed the battery (to the original factory one, i use a 3400 mah mugen battery) and it wouldnt charge either, then i took it to some technician who jump-started it or something, since then it has been working but the speed of both batteries drain is at last 5 times faster, during my sleep (only data turned on) it discharges about 50%. Drainage is crazy fast.
The phone signal is also very bad, keeps showing that the network is unavailable and sometimes when i try to manually connect to my operator network it does work. the signal display shows 4 bars and still no network even if on the street sometimes. (briefly before i installed doomlord kernel, 2.3.4 android, and jokawild rom in case this issue is known to happen)
This has been going on for like 15 days, everything else works perfectly. However just a couple hours ago touch screen also went mad, it keeps "clicking" all over the place, after doing touch screen service test it keeps drawing lines instead of dots wherever i touch.
I know its a lot of stuff, but i couldnt give up without asking in xda if theres any chance of saving my xplay or i just have to buy a new one.
THX a lot for your feedback.
It sounds like some circuitry may be overcharged from the water, as a similar effect happened with my old laptop. It may not be that though. Personally, I would try to replace it through ebay or the like. I feel bad for you, sorry that happened.

You could keep the microSD and put for sale elsewhere as "for parts"
(the conditions of damage make it unable to sell here I believe)

The Power Management chip PM8085 was damaged.
Is the 2G (GSM/EDGE, not 3G) signal still working?

Note 3 powering off by itself

Hello, I would like to start off by saying I'm new here AND in Android culture. I was an iPhone user, but decided to swith to something different. Since I live in Europe (in Lithuania, to be exact) I figured that it wouldn't mean anything here if I bough a blacklisted T-mobile Note 3 4G LTE phone. Now to the main point - I got the phone yesterday and noticed something suspicious. Firstly, it came with aftermarket charger and usb cable (not usb 3.0, just a simple micro-usb to usb 2.0). My first problem is that when I am charging Note while it's on, it almost doesn't charge at all. Only when I turn off the phone I can expect the phone to charge to 80-90 percent in 8 HOURS! That's insane! Needless to say, I WILL be getting original samsung charger... Now other complaint is that the area around camera gets hot even when changing settings. Not really sure what causes that, so I did 4 factory resets yesterday.... Today it gets warm, but nothing suspicous. Disabled KNOX and other crappy programs. Not sure if it's the chargers fault, but battery life sucks. Phone drains the battery like crazy, the percentage drops about 1 in minute or so. When I use the power saving, reduce the brightness, use airplane mode, it's better, but even If i charge it and use my phone at the same time, the battery percentage still keeps going down
Now, the biggest wtf moment is when the phone is not plugged to charge, if i press the sleep button, the display turns black and after a few second the phone shuts itself off. No sounds, no vibration or notifications, it just silently goes to sleep. I can only turn it on again. I could even successfuly unlock the phone to use with a sim card, the phone is also making fun of me! Not really sure what's happening with my note that i bought off ebay and spent quite the amount of money, but I am starting to get into depression...
Please, if anyone has ANY idea what the hell is happening (apart the stupid charger), i would really appreciate any answers. And sorry for the long post and my english, as it is not my native language!

Could be a counterfeit - Check the serial with Samsung and make sure it has all the crazy samsung sensor, the counterfeits usually don't
Make sure the power button isn't sticking, I had an iphone 4s that did the same thing and it was due to power button hardware problem.
For the charger just get a cheap one off ebay with the right power ratings(find them for your country on samsung.com) and I find Toshiba sells replacement USB3 cables for their hard drives really cheap - That can save you 30$
Blacklisted IMEI phones are a gamble, if you can prove it's a counterfeit then ebay should refund you but it might also be a phone some bad man/woman/other stole and might have been abused. If it's the latter then that's a shame that he ended up stealing from two people...

Thank you for your answer
Well, the power button isn't sticking, I can clearly feel and heal it click when I am pressing it. The IMEI under the battery matches the IMEI in android system settings. I checked my IMEI on swappa and it says that phone was reported stolen (yay..). On imei.info site it says a different model (n9005 instead of n900t), but whatever.
Thank you for the info about toshiba usb 3.0 cables, might as well buy one right away
To be honest, I feel like it's a faulty item (even though seller assured my that the phone is working like new and that he replaced the battery). The battery life, as I said, is terrible, it doesn't hold a charge, the vibration motor seems very cheap (it's too strong, it sounds very strange), speaker seems to be not-ok too (distorted sound not even on full volume), screen-capture with palm doesn't even seem to work properly, I can't choose various music eq's (it says that this eq is not supported with speaker), I can't get my sim to work with this phone. Well, according to the ebay ad, phone should be working properly without any problems. The fact that the battery or charging mechanism sucks determined that was a lie...
Now I'm wondering if this info would be enough for paypal to refund me, because the phone is almost unsable (with self shutting of while it's not charging) and sad battery life...
Sorry for double post, but I noticed something very strange...
Well, turns out, that when the airplane mode is off, the phone gets very hot around the camera and battery is draining like mad. BUT, when I turn on the airplane mode, note cools off, battery still keeps draining, but it seems that not as much... Anyways, is it possible that the cellular module or something like that could be a cause of all my problems? (and to keep in mind that I haven't been able to use any sim with it, as it keeps saying "searching")
Sim won't work unless it's unlocked.
My suggestions are to:
1. Stock restore and then root the device.
2. Just sign in to phone using WiFi and download chain fires region lock away. Roughly $3 US.
3. Then try out Sim card, see if you can get signal.
If you can get that far, it will tell us what other kind of problems the phone is having on its own. Sounds to me at the moment it is trying very hard to find the signal and causing battery drain issues. The random shut downs could be due to the phone over heading and shutting down as a fail safe.

I did everything exactly as mentioned in the thread that you've posted the link to. First of all, booting logo changed, then my phone became unlocked (when I inserted the SIM, it didn't ask for unlock code). However, even with apn settings, it still says "searching" and gets quite hot in the upper-left side of the phone (when screen is facing towards me). I was really hoping this would help, but it didn't do much, as it seems... Anyways, I appreciate your good deed trying to help me I'm really desperate to make this phone work with my phone, but can't seem to manage to do that, which is very sad...
