Htc's Touch Pro2 vs. Nokia N97 - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

For anyone on the fence whether to get the Touch Pro2 or the N97;
I made a video that compares the two devices. Check out the link in my signature. Ps. Don't miss the Mortal Kombat ending.

Fatalityyyy hehe, great compare, great video !!
Before I had my touch pro 2 ... last week, I saw your reviews and I couldn`t wait to get my touch pro 2
Greetings from Germany Chrizz

Pretty much what i thought when i bought my TP2. Although IMO TP2 turns more heads than the n97

thanks for the review. i currently have the n97 and will get the touch pro 2 when at&t releases it (as long as they dont mess up the keyboard too bad). however, in my opinion, there is no clear winner. each one has its positives and negatives. it's going to be real hard getting used to the touch pro 2 since it has no 3.5mm adapter and the camera is garbage compared to the n97. there are also somethings that i've gotten used to on the nokia like the podcasting app (which is amazing) that are hard to find replacements for. however the keyboard is crap on the n97 and there is not as much customizability on the n97 as there is on the touch pro 2. tough decisions, especially now that the n97 has replaced my regular digital camera. if i get the touch pro 2 i'm going to have to go back to carrying my camera around which sucks... decisions decisions..

Absolutely the best review out there... would you say that the Touch Pro2 is louder than the Nokia N97?

There is no need for comparison as the Touch Pro 2 will win N97 hands down, they are using different OS in the first place.
Nokia will never make good touch screen phone using Symbian OS compared to Windows.

you are insane.
in a good way. don't worry.

Louder, as in.... has more oomph in the speakers louder?
Sound quality is definitely better when playing loud. But i think the tweeters on the N97 may ring a bit louder. Although there are definitely some tricks here at the forums to increase volume.

10 years back Nokia used to be in the cutting edge... I wonder what happened to them? They got too cosy with their market leader status perhaps.

Thanks mate! I intend to focus on HTC devices in particular.

If you have suggestions on what the next match up should be...do tell me

touch diamond 2 vs nokia 5800 ?? not exactly in the same league (with the touch diamond 2 being better, but meh)

I think you should start doing these kinds of reviews on youtube and become a youtube partner where you can get paid for your videos.
Very good match-up review.
Also what I mean by loudness by comparing the decibels by ear or by analyzing the sound with software (at max volume, playing the same sound byte).
Would you say the Touch Pro2 is louder than N95?
Match Ups:
Touch Pro2 vs Samsung Omnia Pro vs Nokia N97
HTC Touch Diamond vs HTC Blackstone vs HTC Hero vs Samsung Omnia 2 vs Sony Ericsson Aido
It looks like HTC Touch Diamond can be well compared to a lot of phones of the same form factor.

That's what i though you meant. I need to get myself a db measuring device for my next versus videos. I'm definitely going to try to become a YouTube partner. 2000 subscribers needed, so all help from my friends at the xda forums is needed.
I'd say that the loudness of Touch Pro2 is one of the devices weaknesses. It definitely could be louder. It's likely an WinMo issues. But i read that the loudness can be tweaked with registry modifications.
TP2 is loud enough for me, but just played around with my friends old N95 and it can get very loud.

Adding that nokia would not have the benefits of this fantastic comunity

Touch pro 2 vs. Superstar

I read a little about the htc super star, so which do you think for better?
For starters I tryed to dig up a little information and found(I think all this stuff was leaked so im not sure how acurate it is now cause the superstar isnt even on htx wordwide website yet):
Touch pro 2:
528 MHz processor[288 MB of RAM
Ships with WM 6.1 but has can be upgraded to 6.5 when it comes out
full qwerty keyboard and it tilts too ]
3.6 inch WVGA touch screen
Confirmed to exist lol
Superstar
600 MHz processor
256 MB RAM
ships with WM 6.5
full qwerty keyboard
3.7 inch WVGA touch screen
I dont think it's been confirmed yet
Plus I think the processor are made by different companies, and I found all this stuff simply by Googling so I hope this is convenient but I cannot confirm all this is accurate, especially for the superstar but feel free to add info in comments, and of coarse, tell which one you think is better.
I will start the discussion by stating my opionion, and thats that the touch pro 2 is better cause it has more ram a tilting keyboard, and a zoom bar and looks way better, so with that, let the discussion begin! lol
Hope superstar have a face soon...I can wait a year more to upgrade to something REAL good
"The Superstar however is the real mystery, and the only device which can not be identified from the known specs. The Nvidia AP16 chipset is likely referring to nVidia APX Tegra platform, which I am sure it very encouraging news to us enthusiasts disappointed by Qualcomm. The 3.7 inch WVGA screen near guarantees a media-focused device, which is something I think very many of us are waiting for.
See FuzeMobility for more info."
Here more info from the first thread on the theme

Superstar sounds nice. I hope it does use nVidia!

but what is the main difference in the processor, its only 72 MHz more so what the touch pro 2 has a tiliting screen and a full qwerty keyboard and a zoom bar and dual speakers and dual mics, now thats awesome
The superstar is a completely different processor class and should be much much faster (don't just compare the rated speed). Like going from 486 to 586 in the PC world. The Tegra chipset is also 1080P video capable and there are many other goodies with a mean integrated graphics processor. The Pro 2 is good, but hardware that has been around for quite a while.
In that case then you got me salivating. However, I really doubt this thing comes to Sprint here in the states. If they bring out the TP2 Q3 of 09, why would they follow it up so quickly with this? I hope I'm wrong though as I'm upgrading in december. fingers crossed that something even cooler than the TP2 will be around.

so wait do you think this it would be worth waiting like half a year for this phone? and also do you think it will make it o the us, cause some phones like the touch hd never did
The superstar is superior, it will most likely feature HDMI out because it has HD capabilities, here is a pic:

The graphic will be able to play the real quake 3 with ease, it can play hd for 10 hours and music for 30 hours

wait a sec... I googled it and found this pic:
http://www.gsmdome.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/nvideadevice.jpg
if its really THAT thick... yeah... umm I would expect specs that high but it doesn't look like that would even fit in my pocket. or maybe it just looks really bulky in the pic, but if you think of it that way then the htc shift is already out and is by far the best phone ever, so why doesn't every one get that? aside from the price, its WAY to big for a phone, so if the superstar is that big I would prefer a less powerful phone like the touch pro 2, or maybe that pics a fake. but I doubt it because it would explain why this device is so far ahead of other phones, but some people prefer bigger more powerful phones, just like the shift is a bigger phone than the touch pro 2 but is better, and I will admit even the touch pro 2 is big, but I draw the line when it is to big to fit in my pocket, but then again that's just my opinion on the touch pro 2 vs. the superstar btw after seeing that pic my opinion changed a lot lol
I don't think it's as big as it looks. In fact, I think it's just a REALLY stupid marketing pic. From the screen size, it looks about the same size on the front ast the Touch HD. The thickness is questionable, but I think the poor picture makes it look thicker than it really is. I'm guessing it's a little bit thicker than a Titan. The TP2 is a little bit less. Still would be bigger than the TP2, but maybe worth the sacrifice.
That said, (and I really have know information to back this up) I'd bet a paycheck they don't bring this to the states through a major carrier.

thats possible they didnt bring a lot of really nice phones to the u.s, but the touch pro 2 is still pretty nice, just a little under powered, if it had better graphics and a better processor, that would be the best phone ever lol
i don't mind having a big phone as long as it fits in my pocket i like the touchpro 2 and will be a nice back up if the superstar isn't in my budget or if it doesn't come to the us i'm currently using a wizard with a extended battery pack at times so i don't think a phone can get much thicker then that
htc superstar looks like a winner to me
but im interested and seeing about the buttons there seems to be a lack of buttons but i'm pretty sure it will have a g-sensor in it so that can kinda work in replace of the buttons

U beat me to it, that iz Nvidia's concept phone/mid that they made from since the start of 2007 or 2008. I will be getting the TP2 first then sell it on Ebay when the superStar comes out. If the SuperStar comes out an work like it does in the following video I will be really sold. Also I heard that it iz coming out Q4 '09. Here is a video of their Windows CE made UI, very fresh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQa9nP4yyms
yea that's goin to be a really nice device i think i might have to steal your idea zellbz sell get the pro2 and then when the superstar comes out do some testing and then sell the pro2 online on ebay or two a friend.
i dont think the size of the phone will be to bad it i'm a pretty big guy anyway so a bigger device is a plus

Is it worth to go for Touch Pro 2 instead of Touch HD

I currently have Touch HD, and I think I can sell it for a price which covers about 95% of Touch Pro 2 price.
So is it worth it? Is it worth selling my beloved Touch HD and go for Touch Pro 2?
Im a multimedia user, so I like to watch videos and listen to music with my phone!

There are lots of improvements but you have to ask yourself this. Are you ok with the added weight and thickness.
If you are, then I will definitely go for it.
Video is said the be much better on the new TP2.
from the revirew's i've read, the main issue is, if you don't need the hardware keyboard, the hd or diamond2 is the best bet. if you need the hardware keyboard, the pro2 is ofcourse the way to go. i ordered the pro2 for this reason too good luck.

about the keyboard-- Ive learned to type on my Touch HD as fast as on desktop computer!!!
Im more intrigued about the dual speakers and the tilting screen, which would be ideal for waching movies!!!!
BTW--- Hows the wifi reception, is it someway better then on Touch HD?? And is does the speaker outpot good sound when on low frequencies(BASS) ??

LOL that's not too shabby at all.
I'm looking forward to be able to test if the dual speakers will also serve as a pretty useful output for playing of music or getting verbal commands from various navigation softwares.
I only ordered my pro2 yesterday and according to the vendor, it should be available for shipping late this month - so i'm not of more knowledge than what's been said in the youtube review's i've watched (mainly pocketnow.com). i'll be watching intently for someone with more knowledge on these subjects
Just read a review - http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1139
made me thinking, but still I need someone who is holding the device in his hands to write a review or something about the sound capabilities and other multimedia stuff!!!

Well
If you ask this on HD section you would recieve a lot of posts saying No!
But as you posted here...imagine what members would say?
If you prefer a buisness oriented device with a real keyboard go for TP2
If you are looking for a more entertainment device go for HD
If you don't need a keyboard then the HD would be nicer.
Now i have a HD and a TP2, for now there are no custom roms for the TP2 and the standard HTC rom is crap. After a night the device reacts slow and needs a softreset.
With a custom rom (black pearl 2.9 or daviduck 6.1) the HD is more stable and faster.
good luck with your choice. The sound when making a telephoen call is better with the TP2!

I wanted to but this place has some touch pro 2 users, and the forum doesnt have a option where you can have same thread in different forum places!!!!
but I think I will post same thread at HD forum!!
I did it last week (changed my HD for TP2) and I have to say that it is definitely worth of change (if as you are saying multimedia user). Better video, speaker is unbelievable, better camera (photos and video recording etc.). Different is, that I definitely needed a keyboard so this was my real drive. But by this I realised many other advantages of TP2. I wouldn´t change it for Diamond 2, but TP2 ruless...WiFi is for me same as on HD.

i have got both phones and the touch HD has a bigger screen and video performance is about the same. the reason i say to get a tp2 is as follows:
1. screen is much brighter and colors more vivid. when watching movies you can tell the difference instantly. playback is much more fluid on the tp2
2. htc have refined the tp2 to almost perfection. the whole user experience is thoroughly enhanced. touchflo finally looks like a winner and the addition of the vibez feedback just adds another dimension
3. battery life is better on the tp2 as i have had both devices running together on similar usage
4. tp2 is latest technology and a vast improvement on past htc devices.
5. it looks awesome dude
i'd say to get a tp2 and not only will you have a new device but one which delivers with what it has got under the hood!
edit: oh yeah the current radio is pretty good. got a constant 'H' signal and wifi is strong in and outdoors!
Well if you are listening also to music with a wired headset than you have to consider that the TP2 hasn't got a 3,5 mm headphone jack...

not good for me!!!!
my parents are realy (i dont know the right word - hard, or something, trying to raise me right) and they wont buy it for me!!!
Im already trying to get a bike from them (have to do everything they say-lot of work in the garden and lot of painting-- and get a midle grade of 8 in school + all exams combined) nice aint it??
But the touch HD is 100% mine, bought from my money!!
So ill do alot of thinking an if you see me writting in Touch Pro 2 forum at the end of the summer, then I managed to get Touch Pro 2....
one of the reasons ive not read here is:
You have to hold the HD in your hand or put it up against something to watch tv or video
The pro 2 can stand on your desk and you can see video's just while it stands
and the extra keyboard lets you see the hole screen, when you use the onboard keyboard you mis a large chunk of screen
imhu
I have the good old HD, but will be getting the TP2 for most of the reasons already mentioned (once it comes to the usa for tmobile 3G)! Mostly, I want the tilt capability for most of the stuff I do.
I also say go for it. I have both and at first look it is very noticable in the small screen size difference i was like ahh i dont know. But in less than 30 minutes i was thinking of putting the HD up for sale lol. (iam keeping though most likely). The build of this phone is very nice and its a good performer minus typical few misc bugs. Once the cooks start in this phone will be tops for sure

Touch Pro2 OR Omnia HD - Your recommendation

Hi all.
I have finally zeroed down to the TP2 vs Omnia HD and would love some feedback on the two from people who either own both or have experience.
My typical phone usage in order of priority:
* Music Playback
I currently play music on my HTC Touch with some reg tweaking and Audio Booster. Music can go loud (when the train is deafening) and has a deep punchy bass through my Sennheisser CX500 headphones.
Compared to this, the Nokia 5800 I got from TMobile Netherlands was VERY quiet. I dont know what all the reviews about it being loud get it from. Probably non Euro versions. Anyways, I returned it. Same goes for all the ipods and iphones I have plugged in. Reason why not too keen on the iphone 3Gs.
Which of the two would have better music playback through headphones. I'm looking for high volume, stereo clarity and bass. Tp2 or Omnia HD?
* Pocketability
I'm looking for one phone that I can take with me everywhere, all the time. Omnia HD would fit fine in a jeans pocket no doubt. How big of a brick is the Tp2 in real. Would it be uncomfortable lugging it around going out for a night in town? I guess this would be a deal breaker.
Can I still dorn my skinny jeans?
* Screen
I have a huge load of films that I have never seen and never get to see. Would be fab if I can run through my collection in the train on my daily commute. Now I know Omnia HD has a GORGEOUS screen. The best Im thinking. Bright, pop out colors, big and clear.
How does the Tp2 screen rate in comparison to Omnia HD. I know one gets used to what one has, but would the Omnia HD have twice the better movie watching experience? say watch a whole DVD movie for hour and half at a stretch?
* Battery
For playing music two hours a day, watching maybe an hours video, throw in email retrieval every two hours which of the two would last longer.
* Keyboard
Now I aint much of a caller or texter. Most of my communication is done online with my social lot. The HTC Touch IM experience left a lot to be desired so I stopped using it.
So knowing the Tp2 has the best keyboard, if I dont have much use of it, it wouldnt figure in my equation.
Although having the whole screen visible while typing does earn some points.
Maybe once if I get the Tp2, and start using the keyboard, I'd be doing a lot more typing replying emails and finally getting the email down on the mobile? Cant say!
* Applications
Now by far, the iphone App store has the sexiest, coolest fun apps. For everything under the sun. Android I think will get there, probably needs another year to get enough momentum from the developer community. Someone please code an Android Core video player for one!.
Winmo while having fair share of business related apps, still lags much behind when it comes to the whacky items the iphone comes home with. Ok before this gets into an apple fanboy rant..
Is my belief true, that Symbian has the least interesting catalog of (free) apps, specially the Series 60 v5 touch UI? To think one wouldnt be able to install even the Nokia Beta lab apps onto the Samsung symbian!
(Ok not right off the bat, I did see Nokia maps running on the Omnia HD)
* 3.5 jack
Omnia would have the 3.5 jack. Tp2 I can plug in a cheapo 3.5 adapter. So no biggie.
Now thats my share of the rant for the month. Thanks for bearing with me. Would totally appreciate any thoughts on the above so please hit reply.
Thanks
PS: Although there be similar threads and I did search!, thought I could better get some insight from the above specifics in one place. Thanks again.
I can only give my opinion from my ownership of the TP2 for a week. Previous to this the last smartphone I owned was an SPV e200 with WM2003.
Music Playback:
Fantastic, has plenty of base but not too much - coupled with a good pair of headphones I see no reason for a regular user to need another mp3 player. The TP2 also has a very loud and clear speakerphone (obviously important for conference calling using their 'Straight Talk' technology. The interface for the music player is nice, and all skinned using TP3d.
'Pocketability':
The TP2 is thinner than the Omnia HD I believe, but it is farly fat. Although it is not as fat as I expected, and roughly the same size as the k850i I had. It will definately show through skinny jeans, depending on how skinning you go you will struggle with any phone! I personally don't find it a problem in my pocket.
Screen:
I think the OLED on the Samsung will trump the TP2 here, the TP2 screen is great: 480x800 resolution, but will not match the brightness and contrast of the OLED screen.
Battery:
Very impressed with the battery life of the TP2, it will easily last 2 days with moderate use (web 3h, music 1, texting 30min). This is set to probably improve as others have with the wm6.5 update - so possibly looking towards 3 days on average use.
Keyboard:
If you don't want it or won't use it then its extra fat in your pocket, but I can say that it is fantastic, I picked it up not using a phone keyboard before and could instantly use it. From what I have read there aren't many keyboards if any that will beat it.
Apps:
Quite a few for WM, and will increase with the Marketplace launch.
3.5 Jack:
Mini USB to 3.5 is required which is a slight pain, but doesn't really make much of a difference for me.
Is the Omnia 2 even released yet? I advise going to a vodaphone shop and trying the TP2 and Omnia 2 when they are out, I had incredibly high hopes for the TP2 and still it surpassed them when I got it.
by chance have you come across the HTC Hero, I think this might be more appropriate for you (the screen isn't quite the high resolution or size of the others, but still good).
Heya shure2,
Thanks for your opinion. Bang on too.
Btw :
'Pocketability': The TP2 is thinner than the Omnia HD I believe, but it is farly fat. You mean Tp2 is narrower and fatter? I thought the Omnia HD was nicely thin.
Guess for the moment the main contention for me is the fatty fatty boom formfactor of the Tp2. Otherwise Im all sold. Think I need to head out to the brick and mortars and try pocketing it there. I used to have a Nokia E61/71 and althought wide it wasnt so thick. Now been with the HTC Touch and its goes around great in skinnies. Ok enough about skinny jeans!
Screen: Like I said, if its still better than good on the Tp2 one gets used to what one has. Cant have everything now.
As for the battery, yes it is impressive getting three days for all that usage.
For the keyboard, like I said, I would start using it more and more once the phone takes over all email and messaging.
HTC Hero, well first thing its Android. Still would wait a year before trying out an Android phone. Second, the screen is smaller. I am targeting my next phone to be atleast 3.5' screen.
Well the Omnia 2 is listed as coming in two weeks at a webshop here in Amsterdam.
Interestingly, if I finally get the Tp2, Id have to pay 40 euro less than the Omnia HD on a 1 year contract. Though if the Touch HD didnt have those graphics issues, wouldnt that be the phone for moi!
Thanks again dude!
What about the Diamond 2?
If you're sold on the pro 2 except for it's fatness and not really looking for a hardware keyboard, why not broaden your horizon and check out the Diamond 2? Not much more left out but the speakerphone function, I think.
But isnt the Diamond2 with a 3.2" screen?..
I do want to watch vids on a big screen. Also reading a lot of the reviews hereon, people saying the Tp2 performs a lot better than the Diamond2.
sounds like you want the Touch HD to me check out the specs

as a proud owner of both the tp2 and samsung omnia HD this is my opinion:
samsung omnia HD:
i have unbranded it to remove orange uk identity. screen is huge and very vibrant. music playback is very impressive but sound in video playback is seriously muted. camera takes amazing shots in bright light but led light not good enough for night time photos. video capture is impressive - HD 1278x720 and looks amazing on your tele through tv out. the biggest let down is the audio quality on vid playback. choppy at best but new firmware due soon with new audio codec. battery life aint the best at all maybe 1.5 days on minimal use. multimedia wise this phone hammers the tp2 but alas thats the only department it wins on. thats why these 2 phones can quite happily live together!
HTC Touch Pro2
now this is where i get accused of being a fanboy but the phone is that good. screen is smaller but on par with omnia HD on res and vibrancy. both however don't perform very well when viewed in direct sunlight. there the tp2 fairs a tad better as the omnia HD screen is not visible at all in direct sunlight even if you cup your hand round screen. tp2 has got XDA as support and that in my book is the killer blow. tf3d actually works well and well manila is what it is. we all know what winmo does and the tp2 does all of it well and takes it to another level. i am getting 2.5 to 3 days of battery depending on use even from 96% chargeD) tp2 feels good ion the hand and looks too good to be a HTC branded device. seriously HTC have outdone themselves here. must say don't like winmo 6.1 on this device as i think winmo 6.5 will bring out the devil in this device.
conclusion:
for multimedia purposes you can use the samsung omnia HD as that what symbian is all about but for overall everyday performance with adequate multimedia functions its gotta be tp2! it all depends on what aspect of the device is more important to the buyer!
Well my opinion is that go for TP2 definetly!
One thing to add, appart from what all have said is that if you go for omnia you won´t have the great support from this site!
And that fact is a super plus at least form me!
The Omnia Pro hasn't be released yet has it? I don't think this question can even be answered until people get their hands on the device. From my experience Specs mean next to nothing its all about software optimization. Look at the TP and the TP2. They both have same processing speed and i believe the same amount of RAM but the TP2 is a hell of a lot faster.

The TP2 is quite thin, but for some reason in this sentance I was refering to the HTC HD :S, not sure on the width of the omnia HD. Although TP2 is a bit fatty bom batty its quite slim width wise, which is better than being wide and skinny imo.
Something that is not always brought up in reviews of the TP2 is how frigin awersome the build and aesthetics are, it looks really expensive with chrome parts and sleek lines. I would be surprised if you put them both side by side and asked a mate with no phone knowledge to pick the best one and he picked the omnia hd - it just wouldn't happen imo. Again you can only experience this when you get it in hand.
I spent £453 on this sim free - crazy for a phone I know, but concidering its a PDA, mp3 player, video player, web browser, gps device, camera and lets not forget an awesome phone, I think its worth it.
Its only going to get better as well with wm6.5 support and hopefully some cooked roms on this awesome place.

Yeah actually intrinsically it does sound like the HTC HD would be the device for me except that some issue with its 3D drivers not being there at all vs the Tp2 having much better performance vid playback wise.
I only know the above from what I've read on these forums. Somehow the Tp2 plays better video than the Touch HD. What is that all about?

You sum it up so well when you say everyday performance with adequate multimedia functions. I guess the top multimedia performer would be the iphone, though I havent yet had one in the flesh to certify.
The one thing that niggles me about the Omnia Hd is the Symbian OS. Software support for it seems to be rather dead. Xept for the odd twitter or facebook clients. Dont know why that would be.
The battery issue is a real winner for the Tp2 then. Imagine going on a plane trip for 15 hours and still having a phone when you land in at your destination while watching vids and perusing ur music in lounges and at gates. Important aspect for me. I have not been using my phone for data and I want to change that with my next phone.
Tomorrow going out to the shops and trying out the Tp2 for real.
Just found out that Tmobile have launched their TMobile Vario 5, which is basically the TP2 with a 4GB memory card. Wonder if they branded anything in there. My contract needs another two weeks to renewal so I just have to wait, impatiently!....
I am totally sold the Tp2 is the way to go. And again, xda-developers being there would make sure that there be a lot of future firmware changes to keep it performing by leaps and bounds. !
Cant wait to get my hands on one. Thanks all you guys who contributed. Some very relevant pointers to help this confused worrisome.
Cheers!

to be honest iphone 3g aint as you still restricted as to what you can use on there. no opera or flash or skyfire etc. UI and touch is amazing barr none the best out there. the others are catching up and tp2 is proof of that! iphone battery aint the best either mate and the current restrictions to one service provider means you need iphone devs ultrasn0w to free your iphone 3g up! iphone does what it does very well - the apps available are immense but limited to apple if ya get ma drift. everything runs through apple servers which is worrying to say the leaset! symbian os support is out there on sites like mobiles24 and mobilecastle........told you i was phone mad! these sites however are nothing like XDA so tp2 wins hands down!

Anyone else eyeing up the Samsung Galaxy S Pro?

Looking at the specs, this looks like the logical Android-based successor to the Touch Pro 2. 1GHz processor, 4" AMOLED, Qwerty slider. Is anyone else eagerly awaiting this?
It looks nice but i'm an HTC man until my death
galaxy s pro looks really nice on the spec sheet but if it's not opened up like all the HTC phones are, i won't be interested.
i'll just keep plugging along on the TP2 till HTC builds a qwerty slider with snapdragon and android for GSM

IMO, the rumored T-Mobile [US/UK? -- nobody knows, but it's probably US because it looks like a Sidekick successor] HTC Vision is the Rhodium's Android-based successor, albeit a downgrade in keyboard quality. My reasoning is: because it's made by HTC, not by any other manufacturer! Just keep in mind, a lot of developers focus on HTC devices. There's always a big support group for HTC.
If It was...
if it was all about spec i would have purchase the HD2 But all touch... not my thing! TP2 Keyboard until something better with a keyboard or T-Mobile Shadow Compact qwerty keypad comes out.

Where to upgrade after the Touch Pro 2?

I've been using the HTC Touch Pro 2 since last April with T-Mobile. I've absolutely loved the functionality, including ability to customize the ROM(<3 Energy), simple to use web browsing, texting, email, wifi router, bluetooth ability, and many other features that come with the smart phones. I'd die right now during school/work/personal stuff without the calendar.
When I bought it last year, the HD2 was sitting next to it, and the reason I went with the HD2 was the hardware keyboard. Software keyboards annoy the heck out of me unless they're well done. I could type 5 times faster on my TP2 than an ipod touch. But, what is getting to me now after using the TP2 for 10 months?
- Camera: Quality isn't high enough compared to other shots I've seen taken by phones. I switch the lighting settings to tweak it, but it's still grainy. I as in a dark club the other night, and watched someone take pictures that were noticeably clearer than mine.
- Lack of 3.5mm Headset Adapter. I have to use the HTC USB -> 3.5mm adapter to listen with earbuds to music. Annoying.
Like I said, the hardware keyboard is almost necessity, but I could learn to deal with a software if it's not the kind that can be easily fat fingered.
That's all I can think of right now. Any help with the phone upgrade process would be greatly appreciated.
i think your first decision is probably are you going to stay with windows phone 7, android, iOS, or webOS.
Almost all of these software has some nice phones with physical keyboard. 3.5mm headphone jack (it's pretty much standard now with most high-end phones). If you want a good camera, go with the phone with led flash support then you probabaly will be fine.

I liked the TP2 after I got it because it was an operating environment I was used to and familiar with. I haven't used any other one, so I can't comment on it. What are examples of phones with hardware keyboards that have the same, if not better functionality than the TP2, including the things I listed of any OS? The HD2 and HD7 look enticing, but if there's something similar that might suit my needs better, I'm just looking for suggestions.

If the keyboard is what you care about, then perhaps you should simply wait for the HTC 7 Pro to be available. It is basically the Touch Pro2 on steroids. It is the successor to the TP2 and runs WP7. There's a thread with a bunch of useful information HERE.
I'm in same boat as you, trying to figure which phone next. Still cannot decide and will give it another year, mainly because 3G networks are in a state of flux where I live (now still using EDGE). I will likely either go to Android if I can get the sync with MS Office to my liking or WM7 if the apps take off. No interest in other phones.
As for headphones on TP2, I have a nice bluetooth set by Jabra that does away with need for jack.
I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago when my contract ended with my provider. I had been looking at WP7 since the first whiff of it came out, but the more I read about it the more I disliked it. Long story short I greatly dislike all of these current operating systems for varying reasons.
So eventually I decided that the TP2 was as good as it was going to get for me for now, and bought up a couple extra of them. They're relatively cheap, and they all should last me until I cannot physically use them anymore (carrier doesnt support for some reason, or I can't find any good batteries, etc..) or until some company makes something desirable for me.
My advice is that you research at length all of your options before you end up with something you don't like using. It took me a lot of time playing around with android and WP7 before I decided I didn't want any of them. The TP2 is an excellent device and Windows Mobile is an excellent OS, don't let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise.
As far as your complaints, 3.2 MP is enough for me and my carrier's TP2 includes a headphone jack.. So I guess we're not in the same boat in those regards...
maybe an evo shift 4g?

I'm in a similar boat... I love the TP2 for it's design, had a Tilt before so this was a great upgrade. But there's nothing that's coming out from HTC that I've seen or heard of that looks like an upgrade. The 7 Pro is kind of an upgrade, but not the same kind of amazing upgrade like the Tilt to Tilt 2... I would like a slightly larger/better display but also keep the physical kb... I've been lookin at the Atrix (even tho they say you can't put custom roms on it yet), just cuz it sounds pretty sick but I keep hoping a phone w/ a kb comes out. Looks like Dell is gonna bring something out but not til the end of this year I think... I really hope HTC brings out a Tilt 3 w/ a 4-4.3in screen, better camera, runnin android since I don't really like WP7 & a dual processor...lol

The Atrix concept looks very cool, but I've been pretty underwhelmed by the recent Motorola handsets. They just feel cheap and clunky compared to HTC phones. But maybe they can step it up a notch. Similarly, the Dell Streak seemed like nothing special that just about every other manufacturer couldn't match or do better. And there were some things, like the proprietary dock connector, that were outright inexcusable. Again, they are going to need to kick it up a notch to get me remotely interested in their products.
I agree that a slightly larger screen (maybe around 3.9 or 4.0 in) would be really nice for watching video, and make the on-screen keyboard easier to use (for the times you don't feel the need to flip out the hardward keyboard). But I think a 4.3 in display with a hardware keyboard would result in a really big, thick, heavy phone.
But I have to say, the Desire Z is a pretty sick upgrade over the Tilt2. Maybe not in terms of form factor, but in terms of just about everything else.
I have no upgrades available for a long time so I'd be buying retail. The 7 pro looks quite interesting. Maybe I'll stop buy the T-Mobile store and see how the desire z feels. Is there much of a change over the TP2 to go to a Desire Z?
I've somewhat fixed the no 3.5mm jack issue by buying a bluetooth headset that supports a2dp. I guess that'll hold me over until later this year if I upgrade.

The keyboard on the Desire Z is smaller than the Touch Pro2, but most people who own it say that it still feels very nice. I would miss my dedicated number row, though. I've gotten very used to it.
i have loved my touch pro 2 for the past year or so and all the devs, everyone at XDA made me love it even more. my girlfriend has an iphone and ill never ever trade my phone for iOS and theres not any other phone carried by ATT that is any better than the touch pro 2 i think..but then the Atrix came along. its a sad realization but you cant compare the specs of our touch pros to any of these new devices. sure im sacrificing the full qwerty kb we all know and love and moving on from winmo 6.5 (that ive grown with since 5.x) but i feel like its for the better. especially with all the wear and tear ive put my phone thru, sure is one hell of a trooper thats for sure, its time to set it down and ive made my decision. expecting my atrix to arrive this coming monday. so with this goodluck to all with whatever you decide!
Phone after TP2
I'm also investigating new phones (although doing so would also require me to give up my sero plan, which seems unlikely at the moment).
For me on Sprint, there seems to be a few major choices that include a physical keyboard that I was looking at:
Android:
-HTC EVO Shift
-Samsung Epic 4G
WP7:
-[upcoming] HTC 7 Pro
The EVO shift has a similar sized screen to the TP2, while the Epic 4G goes a bit larger (4") and has a faster processor (1 Ghz vs. 800 Mhz on the Evo Shift). Nonetheless, I'm still pretty turned off by the touchwiz UI on the Epic 4g -- a bit to cartoony for my tastes.
Since the 7 pro is essentially the successor to the TP2, the dimensions are pretty similar albeit with an upgraded processor (1 Ghz).
I'm currently running XDAndroid on the TP2, so I have a sense of how android works, but I've never tried WP7 -- after classic WinMo I'm still kind of hesitant to go back to Microsoft.
To anyone who has been using WP7 -- any thoughts on the disadvantages/advantages over android?
I guess the most obvious phone would be the HTC 7 pro closely followed by the Desire Z.
Personally i decided to keep my TP2 after 2 years (i can pick a new phone @ my provider in june). The phone does everything i want.
The only program i miss on Windows Mobile is WhatsApp/pingchat

I get the Desire Z. I went to T-Mobile hoping to find one to even hold and play with, but didn't see one. I'm just really hung up on the hardware keyboard when considering an HD7. The hardware keyboard makes me want to pump out paragraphs of forum posts on the phone. The software keyboard makes me hate texting.
Same thougths here, and same conclusions, just like some people wrote: I tried some phones, but the only possible choice would be the Desire Z (7 Pro w/o card slot is a NO GO!). I ended up buying an new display to replace the cracked one in my TP2 (via ebay, from HK), saving LOTS of money, and still having the device I like and am used to.
Someone wrote about TP2 being cheap(er) now, where do you get them and at which price? They're still above 50% of the price at introduction around here in Germany. If they were cheaper, I'd buy one as spare, too.

They go for cheap in the Marketplace forum here in XDA every now and then. There's also eBay. I've seen them as low as $120 recently.
That's an incredible price! They're still well over 250€ new on Ebay, almost 400€ in the cheapest onlineshop I found in Germany! WOW.
I will vote for HTC 7 pro, as you've been used to using a keyboard, it's hard to go back to the on-screen one, and BTW HTC 7 Pro is really amazing
