update programs intergrated inside a cooked rom? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV ROM Development

hi all,
i have a rom which is two months old. it came with opera, however there is a later opera version which is really nice.
how do i remove the old opera to install a new one when it does not list in "add / remove programs" ?
there are other programs too, but im using opera as an example.
if it simply cannot be done then fine.. i hope for a decent WM6.5 rom soon

that's why it's better to have a clean ROM to begin with unless you flash 3-4 times a day like some of us here
What interests me is the Name of this thread.
why don't chefs integrate Device Update into their ROMs?

that would make sense,
or why not have the programs installed but list them in add/remove programs so they can be updated individually.
just a thought, but may be it saves disk space or something having them fully integrated as one phone ROM..?
i suppose i should learn how to cook :/

Beta testing help - multiple cab install, settings backup, etc

Just that wanted to ask what ppl have found to be best ways to install all your favourite apps/settings if u are changing roms offten?
I just started recently and have tested some 3 or 4 roms now, but already i find that doing all my customizing and app install is tedious, so i was looking for some method to make it easier.
* i have seen an app that could roll multiple cabs into one - that would make reinstalling all cabs at once after new rom easier, but i cant find the app any more. any ideas on this one?
* backing up rom differences after doing customizations - what app could handle that? propositions?
If we can work some method to do this fast and easy we would get a lot more beta testers hence a lot faster development cycle could be achieved. (=

There are no shortcuts my friend. Some apps are installed to main memory and some to storage card, when installng apps there is interaction involved, therefore no universal solution.
Look here - you can integrate the new sys folders (apps) by building your rom in the kitchen (klick it on). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317866
You can do a backup with spb backup. This way you can keep all installed programs and changes. You can restor your backup in different roms too but you have to be aware that this would mess up a few thins.
Tryed this http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/pocketpcinstallationcreator.shtml one out - managet to create install with multiple cab files - so far so good.
But when i installed this merged install on my wm5 emulator it ended up adding links to cab files in programms folder - so much for instalation - useless.
Gues the search goes on.
Make your own extended rom with all your cabs in, this will do the trick. Its quite easy - its not like cooking a rom - i could do a simple tutorial if people wish - it only requires 2 apps
Meschle - yes, please, a tutorial for extrom making would be good, as i am still a bit green to start cooking roms - extrom would be nice way to start i suppose.

That is a super solution! I would love it!
Hey guys one downside to ext rom way - when installing cabs it does not give you option where to install (main memory or storage card) so everything installs to main memory.
This is ok for the programs you normally install there and registry entries. You can make a new cab that installs directly to storage card but that is a different story
OK, now i am a bit confused. As i understand there is a ROM memory on Artemis(128MB) which is divided in multiple areas - IPL1, IPL2, SPL, Splash, Radio, OS, ExtRom.
This ROM memory is writable by way of flashing. There is also storage area(not microSD) in device and operative memory.
So, as i unterstand it, putting apps in ExtROM is a pure saving, cus ur storage memory is not wasted.
Do i understand it correctly?
With the artemis rom, if you omit extended rom in your nbh building you get more storage memory (an addition of roughly the size of the omited ext rom) Likewize if you include extended rom then you loose equivalent memory from storage - so there is no advantage to having apps (i.e executables) in extended rom but for convenience sake to have cabs and settings can be useful. I suggest keeping extended rom small (2mb) so you dont loose much storage space.
Extended rom tutorial added here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327203
well maybe not 10 minutes then

For people who do not have an extended ROM - would'nt it be similar if they kept all the Cabs in 2577 Folder in the Storage Card with Autoexec and config files to execute them sequentially? I remember doing something like this when I was using the XDA IIs - but then now -
In my case, I rarely need to install anything except TomTom and Fullscreenkeyboard from SPB. The rest - I peek into the Cab using WinCE Cab Manager, then export the contents and now have made one big Cab (appx 4MB in size) with all my registry entries, tweaks, executables, shortcuts and copying relevant files into directories.
That way I execute only three cabs after a Hard reset and moreorless everyting is in place.
Yes dev - i used to have that in my orange spv - an autorun.exe in \2577 folder - last time i tried didnt work as i wanted - but i agree worth looking into.
With the ext_rom - the purpose was to add one for those that dont have.
Ok, was trying a quite a few roms that i had today, extracted em, but did not get the extrom.nb )=
Tried to open os.nb with winimage, but it kept saying something about wrong fat etc.
Is the extrom.nb different form os.nb and other *.nb? Why cant winImage open other nb files? Or is there something else i am missing?
Also, tiried SKtracker(didnt find any free app) demo - made snapshots before and after installing apps, then tried to export relevant registery subtrees.
That brings me to that there is no import functionality in phm regedit, but i found other free regedit app called TRE which can import/export edit etc.
Maybe this TRE tool is worth including in roms, if any cookers are reading.
Any better way to hack registery?

I mentioned this on another thread, but I discovered that FdcSoft's understated Task Manager v2.8 has a supperb regedit built in. It does everything that PHM Regedit does, but it can export and import really easily, just like Windows regedit. As meschle pointed out, PHM's is faster, but I still use the bloated Task Manager just because its regedit; and it also has lots of other stuff that comes handy on occasion.
Oh, great! So many stuff to fiddle with in meschle's PremiumPlus rom that I must have missed this one.

official att wm6 release without bloat

Now that ATT released the 8525 wm6 is there someone who has removed the bloat? I would like to keep the official release for stability but not the extras. Is there anything out there or can I make a request for it by someone who knows what they are doing?
there plenty of roms already using the exact build that is in the ATT release.

Yes, but he wants the official build (3.62.yaddayadda.03 versus 3.62.yaddayadda.02).
mcorrie1121 you are right. I have tried most other roms and have had either stability or other issues. No problems so far with the actual official release for ATT. I just don't like the bloat, but I am not quite good enough to take it out myself and not ruin my phone.
I am trying vp3g's latest release now I will see how it works.
OK I have the wm6 .exe from ATT. I would like to break it down and edit the extended ROM to remove what I don't want. I have NBHextract, NBHgen, and Modified RUUUpdater but they may as well be Pig Latin. I have looked thru the forum and I am missing something, or is there an easier way that I don't know about. Any help?

Austinsnyc should be makin one soon. It was hinted at least. I have found his to be the most stable and fast ROM based on the old 3.62, and I used vp's for awhile. vp's ROM is very nice too, but this one just whips it, so I'm waiting.
If you want the AT&T rom minus the bloat, then flash the official rom and do a soft reset when the 3 second counter comes up. That will prevent the at&t customization software from running. The customization software consists of two parts, the first part lives in the \windows folder and is installed with the preAutoRun.exe and controlled by the PreConfig.txt file.
The second part is called by the first application and lives in the \Extended_Rom folder. You cannot see this folder by default. If you install total commander and manually type the folder location in the address bar, you will be able to see the files located in it. It is installed by the AutoRun.exe and controlled by the Config.txt file.
There is an application availabe here on xda(not sure where I found it) that allows you to mount all the extended rom partitions. After you install it and reboot, the Extended_Rom will show up in the file explorer as a folder. What I did was copy all of the preconfig and config files to a folder on my computer. I then modified the preconfig.txt and config.txt files to suite my tastes. I also edited the .xml files to remove the stuff I didn't want(creating all the music icons, installing the internet proxy, etc.). I put all the files I needed in a folder called cingular, and modified the path in the preconfig.txt and config.txt files to be \cingular instead of \windows and \extended_rom. Then I edited the registry settings under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm.
There are two settings that need to be changed, PreAutoRunCFG and AutoRunCFG. They point to the location of the two text files that control the installation of the bloat. You can't change the actual text files as they are located in ROM, not RAM. Once everything is sitting in the \cingular folder and the registry is modified, I kick it all off with the preautorun.exe and my customized at&t customizations are installed.
I only change/remove the things I'm sure I don't want/need. Anything I'm unsure about, I leave alone. You can tell that a lot of that stuff was written by programmers who didn't think anyone would ever look at it. Lots of commented out stuff left in there and other stuff listed as requested by so and so. Anyway, That's pretty much it. If you mess up, do a clear storage and try again till you get it just how you want it. I hope this helps someone.

Maybe you just would be happy by not installing the CUSTOMIZATION? I had the ATT WM6 for a while and if you prevent your device from customizing your Hermes (the installation after first start / screen alignment - you get a message on the screen telling you that IT WILL CUSTOMIZE YOUR DEVICE IN 3 SECONDS - simply soft reset your device within this 3 secs and you will end up with a pretty clean WM6 ROM).
There are other things that can be removed that arent included in the extended ROM, as well as other things that can be incorporated (SetAcousticParameter, anyone?). Besides, i dont have the attention span to do what thexman suggested
If i would do the soft reset right after install to keep the bloat from being installed like suggested then just added the ATT config cab would that work? The only thing I need ATT for is phone calls and SMS texts, no mms or internet. I have wi-fi for that. Then I could just find what I want and add it.
the at&t settings are only used for mms and internet. so in ur case u dont really need to install them.

alltheway I will let you know it might take me a day or so though
OK I installed the ROM and soft reset before extended ROM install. So far so good. I can make calls and send texts. Everything else seems to be working well. I will see how this works for a few days though maybe I will try another ROM such as Schaps or another cleaned out WM6 ROM to remove some of the unwanted Windows items. Thanks for the suggestions.

[UTIL] SPBbackup2 how to change ROM and re-instal everything in one clic !

Hello all,
you're like me and love to try severals Diamond ROMs on this forum ?
You're tired of re-instal every apps, wifi and other settings after ROM upgrade, me too !
I wasn't a SPB backup user, I used Sprite backup.
A few days ago, I read on a french forum ( before I forget, THANKS Bepe to make fabulous french ROMs ! ) about some new modes in SPB backup 2 software :
ROM and Device Upgrade Modes !!!
What ? Is it possible ?
So last night I try it, I have done a full backup of the official HTC_FRA_1.93.406.1_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.29.25.12_1.00.25.05 ROM with all my favorites ( S2U2, TF3D config, Second Today, Ringo, Resco explorer and registry, Schaps advanced config, batti ) and many others ) apps and settings.
Just after flash to 0.98 french Bepe ROM, I restore the auto exe backup and....
Dream come true !
ALL ( and really all ) my apps and settings are back on this new ROM, the only thing you have to do is to re-organise the windows start menu as you want ( this is the only setting who has not be restored for me ).
I don't have another HTC so I can't try the " device upgrade mode " who sounds very interesting too.
If you install on the PC, you can also browse a backup to take every file you want in it, very useful !
I don't know how they do that but they did it !
Infos and download : http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
P.S : Excuse me for my english " learn by myself by reading english forums " you know, I'm french and french people speak.... french lol
Great ! Seems to be interesting !
Over way to do (more tricky) is to create the famous SDConfig.txt, add all programs you want to install (and try to find any exe programs in cab ... snif), and create a registry cab too
So when you install your new rom, it will install the software (be carefull of not installing already include cab)
I think I will try this cause I'm really tired of spending lot's of time to set back my conf...
Hello " compatriote ",
I like your blog, add it to my favorites.
Making a registry cab seems to be hazardous and dangerous for the phone, there is huge registry differences between ROMs.
And SPBbackup 2 doesn't just restore your apps, but all your settings too.
For exemple Wifi wep key, bluetooth pairing, second today plugins, all are working after the first boot, so you can flash a ROM and restore everything in 15 minutes.
With official ROM, I have 17 Mos free storage, now with Bepe 0.98, 62 Mos, waouh !!!
Mixed feelings with the backup/restore
Hi 2 all!
I took a look at the program.
I have mixed feelings with the restore.
The program also backups the registry. When I use an other rom and restore the datas the registry entrys will also be restored..
I don't know if this is the goal.
What do other users think?
br,
Chris
Looks very interesting if the registry backup is not an issue on different roms (i think that it shouldn't be a real problem if you "just" upgrade the version of a rom)
Sprite backup also has upgrade mode, which I heard is not so good, and caused lots of problems.
SDconfig.txt is part of the UC compliant, which is working - as far as I know - only o Bepe's ROMs. Other Diamond ROMs does not support it. Am I wrong?
beware!
1.you had ROM X---made a backup including system files and registry for ROM X and it includes also some clutter and unwanted files that you accumulated after installing and uninstalling progs and so on...you know what i mean..
2.you are flashing ROM Y----it has a better, improved system files, new registry witch is cleaner, more compact, tweaks all the works to make it better than the old one, ROM X
3. you are restoring the ROM x backup over the ROM Y !!!!
it might work but practically you went back from ROM Y to ROM X.
in my humble opinion backup-restore system function should be used only to restore on the same ROM. for example you installed a bad app and you have to hardreset. use yr backup and yr are set in under 10 minutes!
using backup from one ROM on an another ROM? don't think it is a good idea!

I don't know how it works but ROM Y don't become ROM X, as I said before, with HTC official ROM, I have 17 Mos free storage, now with Bepe 0.98, 62 Mos free, with all my apps. And the overall speed of the bepe ROM is present, fastest than the original one.
I don't think to use this solution for my " final " ROM and ultimate Diamond installation, I prefer start from scratch, but waiting for the ROM I'll keep in my phone forever ( perhaps Bepe 1.0 ), with SPB backup solution I can try severals ROMs and have my complete Diamond in few minutes with no bugs.
Many users don't want to flash and beta-test because of this and wait for the others opinions, with this solution, everyone can try and feedback more quickly.

I also like to start from scratch... installing my personal data after.
as Punch said to Judy "that's the way to do it"
I used spb backup2 for a while now and flashed a couple of roms with it, but i noticed that it doesnt change the registry of the new rom back to old backup one. at least not everything. i noticed that with my weathersetting that i did with WDE. also other reg hacks i did to the old rom wherent present in the new rom. so this programs good for me. only must look out that you dont install double cabs when the programs in your backup ar already in your new rom.

[Q] Custom ROM Request?

Sorry if this is the wrong section, but since its about a ROM..
After some hours of taking kitchens and trying to learn to cook ROM's myself, No ROM seemed to get passed the initial setup stage.. So I'm obviously going wrong somewhere... While I continue to read tutorials and learn more. I'm afraid I may brick my device by flashing a wrongly built ROM.
So until I learn the sacred art of cooking awesome ROM's I would like to ask:
Would be willing to cook a custom ROM for me?
I can send a donation(via Paypal)
If anyone would do this, here's how I'd like the ROM..
Base Idea:
WM6.5.3 or 6.5.5 (The fastest/most stable 6.5.x)
HTC Sense 2.5
Cookie Home Tab V2
Apps Included in the ROM:
QuickGPS
Opera 10
S2U2
Slide2Shutdown
CorePlayer v1.3.6
Palringo (Lastest Version)
Extra:
Facebook Tab in Sense
Battery Percentage in top bar (Like this picture - http://i33.tinypic.com/156tjqx.jpg)
I used "EnergyRom with sense2.5" and really like it but it was too slow and bloated for the way I like it to be
Making something as good as that but with nothing in the ROM apart from the things I stated above (and things which can't be removed) I would be very much appreciated and send a donation to you, If you help me!
For anyone interested in doing this, Reply here!
Thanks Very Much
-Dave

The simplest way to get the hang of kitchen is to make sure everything is working by default. SO this is how i started to cook on my own without boot problems
1. Download any of the kitchen (Gen.Y kitchen recommended)
2. Extract the contents to C:\XDA (Recommended)
3. Run the ervius.exe
4. Load any ROM profiles created by the Chef (profiles will be saved in *.erv format in \Tools\Saved Roms
***NOW take a GOOD LOOK at the packages that have been selected to enable the builds...the applications...the sense 2.5 and tweaks
5. DONT TRY TO DE-SELECT or REMOVE package/any files now. You can do this after step 6
6. Press Create and enjoy some coffee or whatever you like till the rom is created.
7. Once nbh is created, flash it to your device.
*** Dont close the kitchen yet***
8. Note down in your memory / notepad what you want to remove from this chef's ROM
9. Go back to kitchen start removing stuffs like Applications Only. This way you dont mess with SYS or XIP first
10. There are some essential stuffs in SYS that shud not be removed.
11. If you want to remove SQM from SYS...you shud enable DummySQM
this will be provided in kitchen and so when you load the chef's profile...the SQM wud have been disabled by default
Once you get the hang of it...enjoy...
Btw i recommend you start with Gen.Y kitchen...this way you can choose a profile with sense 2.5
Hope this helps and save you some money
Awesome! I'll give that a try tonight.
I'm currently using Donsalari's Ultra Lite Sense 2.5 ROM which is really what I'm looking for
Although its only WM6.5 and has start menu at the top, I surprisingly like it that way when using sense
It was a random find, The ROM is fast and has a good 30MB free when running Sense and CHT. Unlike when I was using the EnergyROM I struggled to get 5-7MB free
I think for the moment I'll keep this ROM in my main phone and test out what I do with making my own, on my old Diamond.. (doesn't have a earspeaker, and the battery last about an hour, lol, but still works).

you can just delete the shortcuts and pretend they were not there
kidding aside, original roms are already fast and stable even with those apps. not sure if possible although another option, there are chefs that have 6.1 basic with less apps.

I just put the .nbh in the root of the ervius directory.
Dump nbh/nb/payload
Then in ervius I used the tools to change the datacache to 4mb (from 2mb) and the pagepool to 12mb.
I excluded (as far as I can remember!)
autoupdate, onenote, office, welcome center, microsoft live, then a host of apps including youtube, voice recorder etc etc.
Make sure you disable the checkbox that tells the kitchen you have a win mob 6.5 native kernel and then click build!
Once its has finished the new .nbh will be in the ReleasedDiamond folder.
On the rom I had Opera was the default browser and is installed as a cab when you first boot your phone. If the cab isn't there the boot sequence stalls and the phone wont work. There is a file some where called ConfigAP (I think its called that! I typing from memory!) which has two lines.... the first being opera 9.7 blah blah .cab.Just delete that line. I think its in the OEM folder. I just did a windows search for it.
My intentions were to installed sense 2.1 on a stripped down official ht rom. Sense has been a bit buggy for me so at the moment im using a rom that doesnt have sense or manila and it is lightening fast!!!
storage
total 127.41
inuse 18.94
free 108.48
program
total 111.08
in use 49.17
free 61.92
Thats with FM radio, rapidread, facebook, rss hub, opera mini (fully recommend!) adobereader etc
I did spend two days solid learning about cooking and would love to do a laymans guide but I feel I dont know enough yet. It would be good to consolidate the hundreds of useful posts! Im glad I spent the time and learned though!
@ rikpotss
the Opera Cab ....\OEM\Diamond\0409\ConfigAP\ConfigAP.txt
i m also using a stripped down 2.03 OEM with Build 21057. i dont need sense 2.1 or 2.5
its sluggish, buggy and takes a lot of RAM which cud be used for more useful programs
