The other day I read that awesome Tut on how to create a Boot Animation by kusotare [link] because of this I started creating a few animations. While doing this I would test them out by flashing them, I did not like this so I created an applet that will basically animate them for you... Its pretty simple code, I am sure anyone on here could do it(and im sure some one has) but I figured I would share it with anyone who wanted it.
All you have to do is extract the .zip into a folder, and when you want to test your animations drop 'android-logo-mask.png' and 'android-logo-shine.png' into the folder. After you put them into the folder, open(double click) 'BootAnimationTest.htm'. This will open up your browser and show you the animation.
Requirements:
-This requires that you have the JRE installed
-'android-logo-mask.png' should be 256x480(Other sizes will work, but the app will resize them)
-'android-logo-shine.png' should be 512x480(Other sizes will work, but the app will resize them)
If you want, until I make it fix it automatically you can
find dimensions of android-logo-mask.png n put those values in BootAnimationTest.htm
Click to collapse
Future:
-In the future I plan to make it were it doesnt matter what size your images are.
-Turn this into a full fledged theme tester!
Feature Request: If you have an idea that you want me to add to this let me know, and most likely I will do so.
Just added a Video!
Change Log:
V 1.02:
-Added buttons that increase/decrease the speed of the shine

Awesome, I will have it where it does it automatically though, among other things... I also think I may turn it into a Jar and have it launch in its own window.
Edit - those red dots, are actualy my name... what happened is that you resized it, so it shrunk the applet.

Yea, thats why I made it, I got tired of having to flash over and over to test mine.
Thanks for the kudos on my tutorial. I had a tough time doing it my first time around, and after six or seven hundred of my friends with G1s asked me how i did it, I finally broke down and did the tutorial.
On the other hand, I absolutely love what you've done with the applet. That will certainly make it easier for people to come up with something they'll really like instead of having to tweak-and-flash as most of us have been doing for ages. Excellent work!

hey, the tutorial didnt take me much longer, so dont feel too bad. the longest damn part of it was writing the script for the video down so i could read it back into the mic!
by the way, i added a link to the first post here into the tutorial post. you really did hit a keystone here thats gonna help people. cheers!
How do you guys feel about the speed of the shine? I think I will add a button that will let you make it faster or slower
Helpful, fast and time saving tool...
This is really a great and helpful tool. Its a must have on the utility belt of all theme-er's.
Excellent work...
This is an awesome tool, it'll help me cut down on wearing out my NAND flashing theme updates over and over just to test the boot screen. Thanks a lot!
Edit: Just tried it out on one of my old non used boot animations I had, the 'animation' scroll should be faster in my opinion. I remember seeing it speeding by at least 2x the speed as the applet does it. BUT the buttons to increase/decrese speed would be ideal. Some people may prefer it slower, some fast.
Again great job on this, you saved a lot of trouble!

Is that possible? IF you're able to do that, you'll hear a lot of "I LOVE YOU"s from theme makers, especially me.
I understand it would be a 'rough draft' sort of thing considering the .9.png and such but really just to see everything 'together' before flashing it would be a welcome change than what we can do now.

Yea, I don't think it would be hard at all... It will just take me a while.
Edit - Ok, so I just posted the new build. This build just added the speed buttons. By the end of the week I hope to have a build that is a full theme tester up. I also think that later on down the road I will make this into a JFrame instead of an applet. Also, what is the deal with the .9.png?
Ok I have been messing with themes, and its coming together good. Its going to take me a while because I have school though.

.9.png are images that Android resizes to work in any situation. like the buttons. sometimes they are small sometimes they take up the whole screen. you have to sign them in eclipse for them to work right. check out this thread for a more detailed description of them and what it takes to get them working properly.
if you do make a theme tester I will have kids just so i can name them Burlyskink.
For theme and boot testing...did anybody see the news story about running an emulated Android os (complete with G1 skin) on a Windows PC?
It looks just like a brand new fresh stock G1 and it works. I wonder if that could test out themese and mods?

Hi all,
I'm looking at some vanilla Roms right now, as I'm sick of all the HTC crap But I really can't stand the Vanilla default rounded-white-awfull style and love the blak HTC's one. I've looked over the internet but I only find some framework-res.apk that would replace the notification bar. ANd I would like to replace all the look of vanilla (included radio buttons, checkboxes etc)
So here I come with this idea. Taking the framework-res.apk of an htc rom, let's say VillainRom for e.g (if they don't see any drawbacks in that) and replace a lots of stuff in a vanilla one, e.g ezHero, as this is the one I'm looking at.
Now, knowing the fact that I've never done some Rom customizing before, is this a quite easy task... I mean, some png are different in size, would this be a problem ? Do I have to do something else appart from zip align, re sign etc ?
Cheers,
LTourist
PS : and don't answer me "if you don't know that, you shouldn't do it" because the one who do must have started somewhere before becoming a rom expert
you should take a look at SuperHero from the VillainROM guys.
almost exactly what you describe.

Why don't you try it & see?
This should help: http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile-pulse-pulse-modaco-com/302404/ande-android-design-editor/
If you need any help I will be glad to help.
I was on SuperHero 1.1 once upon a time... but since the version 2, I don't want to go on it again... This version is, imo, just villain without sense home... which i already have on my villainROM... Moreover, there is still so many htc crap under SuperHero, like sms, clock etc...
I will have a look at the soft you're pointing to me 42turkeys, looks promising
How about: Take a great Cyanmod base (VanillaEclair because of its awesome power saving kernels and CM 5.0.7, or the straight 5.0.8 port) - and try theming with a CM theme? Problem with having Sense frameworks is that of space - and memory usage. They will always run in b/g
Scratch that - Just tried this and hung on loading screen.
Same here, but with the framework-res.apk modification that 42turkeys gave me. I started from ezHero...
I totally agree, sense framework is hell, that's why I would really like to have the best of the two world. And a vanilla rom fits in 60MB whereas SuperHero take more than 100MB... for absolutly useless app's and features... Vanilla with CM and "sense" look would be awesome!!!
Didn't know about the CM theme, i look at it tomorrow, it's too late now, off time
Good luck! If you need any help just ask and I can test stuff for you as I'm running EZHero too.
I assume "theming" CM is actually using Metamorph, right ?
Well, I'll try to learn how to do it this evening. Just in the mean time, I give a try at superhero again, just to be sure I don't wan't any crappy sense stuff, and I'm now fully convinced... SuperHero crashed this morning by waking me up as the htc clock was ringing but without htc's lockscreen...
VillainRom team has made an incredible work since a while, but this release of SuperHero is just a joke to me... (sorry for those who worked hard on it )
EzHero/Sense look, I'm coming
Well, I can't manage it...
Can't do metamorph because it seems dead and the only reliable informations I could find was videos made by stericsson... Which is not helpfull regarding the xml file tags and others specification used by metamorph...
I managed to boot with a modified framework-res.apk but android is crashing just after boot up... I tried to pushing the original apk but I got the same errors since then... So maybe it's not my apk which is bad but just the method I'm copying it : the brute force !!! (adb push ^^)
Does it gonna work if I'm making an update.zip ?
If somebody could just point me where to start, I'll be gratefull
LTourist
Probably the theme section of the forums as this really isn't development related...
Yep, I agree. I saw my mistake after my first post... But it was to late Maybe some moderator could move the thread in that forum to avoid duplicated thread
Working on a gingerbread theme for DK28, not quite sure if i'll release it or not, but while dumping the pngs in and testing on my phone, I noticed the issue in the attached screenshot. The backgrounds for the icons when you hit menu from the homescreen are now black so the black text no longer shows up.
Anyone know where this text can be found in the framework xmls so I can edit it? Its the only issue I found and I poked around the xmls but couldnt find anything that jumped out at me, thanks for any help!
EDIT: correct png uploaded
bump - cmon guys, no help on this?
This is what I'll trying to figure out as well, its really pissing me off as its the only thing stopping me from releasing my rom. Im keeping an eye on this thread as well.

oh right, well its gotta be in framework-res.apk/res/drawable-hdpi for sure, i changed out almost every icon in there, flashed it and voila, black menu backgrounds. so i dont know exactly what pngs were responsible. doing a quick search for menu though i get the following i put my money on the starred one:
menu_background.9.png
***menu_background_fill_parent_width.9.png
menu_submenu_background.9.png
so what is a menu smali file? i'll search around but i've never done anything with one.
EDIT: sounds like smali might be a little out of my league, lol. but i think i may have found something, testing now before i reveal it. then just one more thing to fix and i think its ready to go!
okay well i found what to do for xml edits here:

but i did them and it doesnt look like it took. i've asked the OP of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863860 for some advice and also on changing the notification text from white to dark as it doesnt look good on the lighter gray notification background in GB.
hopefully i'll have something up today or tomorrow, its looking great other than that!
looking good so far, even with a GB battery 1% mod! just 2 more little issues to fix!

Hi All,
I've been looking for an app/tweak or something to be able to edit the notification area that opens with the "Down Gesture" on the status bar, my biggest thought about this is that there is a lot of space that could be saved/compressed so more useful information can appear within one screen, here you are some thoughts (my device is rooted and is working on stock 2.3.5):
1. Generally, rows heights can be cut to 1/3 at least.
2. Operator name can be removed (of course I know the operator I'm on and I don't need to get reminded everytime I open the notification area ).
3. The white background is really boring, it'd be better to have something that suits the background for example (at least semi-transparent).
I'll be happy to know what you think !
Thank you all.

Thank you indeed for your response, however, this isn't really what I'm looking for (when it's still very nice), but it mods everything individually, for example, I want to delete that header where the operator name is written and shift things up to save space, this isn't doable there (correct me if I'm mistaken)....
Let me know your thoughts !
Have you tried cm7 yet? It provides a greater control of your notification drawer than any of the sense versions.
Notificaiton Widgets
Choice of Large/Small Carrier Provider or your custom text
Change the tray colors using cm7 themes
For sense, I would think that you might need to modify some of the framework directly but I'm not sure as to how to do that.
More explanation to what I'm really thinking of !

The issue is starting to turn me crazy on android but I'm still insisting on making it work, I've previously submitted a question with all what I need to make...here you are my previous post with screenshots:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30861738&postcount=5
When I found that there is nothing ready made for what I want, I thought I'd make it myself, I started studying procedures for compiling, adb pushing, editing xml files responsible for the items I need to modify...
I know that removing the "Carrier Name" AND WHOLE BOX WITH THE CLEAR Button depends on Status_bar_expanded.xml (in systemui.apk), I need to know what shall I modify to reach what I want as in the screenshots, I tried zillions of things and got stuck many times in botting and I've been recovering and recovering and recovering the whole day
Soooo....any clues ?

You should not post your questions there.
You can not change the icon size or bar size. They needs some new codes and options which is beyond my reach. U need a good dev. Carrier name can be removed. But it needs lots of research as nothing is written in english in the smali, it sucks. If I can do it I ll tell U. I seen ur that post in the morning. Just didnt know what to say.

Ok guys,
Im going to post this in every Note 2 variant forum until I can figure this out.. I mmanaged to get a working transparent status/systembar on my note 2 on tablet UI.. the only problem being that my phone totally locked up and being the DUMB a$$ that I am I did create a backup.. reflashed a rom and thought I could recreate it.. I have located what I think the files name is and it is tw_status_bar_background.9.png. Now when I try to recreate it the status bar becomes all distored when pressing something.. I will show you pictures below of it working and it NOT working.. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.. I am not asking anyone to give me a step by step but more of just yes thats the right file or no thats not it..
PS the black line you see at the bottom of first pic is bc the wallpaper is not scaled properly, which can be fixed..

well, i have started to mod my phone with tablet ui for more than a year but still yet to release anything athough i am using it on daily basis from note -> s3 -> note2 now. however, since the updates were rolled out quite frequently in the last year, i had to switch to new firmwares and redo/rewrite the changes accordingly because there were quite a lot of fundamental changes recently. this process is time consuming especially i employed some parts of firmwares from other devices as well as the custom features i added. so, i am not sure when i can release something since i modded the kernel and the rom as well in my own way which compromises the usual practice in terms of structure and so forth. that means i have to make sure it is compatible with other roms first, and then i must ensure i have time to solve and fix users problems
