MMC problem - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

My PDA2k got a problem reading or writing data on 2 gb MMC, this problems include some apps can't be installed or some times installed but corupted (while some other installed normally), the same with mp3s & pic., i tried hard format, changing roms, formating the mmc both in the pc & on the ppc, but the problem sill exist, btw i tried 32 mb MMC worked perfectly, & i used to have a 2 gb sd card that worked, but it was always write protected (in both lock positions, & even with tape), but it ran all app., & all type of data perfectly.
thanx 4 caring, & hope somebody have a solution

2gb card problem workaround question

I'm sorry if this question has been covered in the other thread allready but after hours of looking I still had no answer.
My Orbit with 2gb card has had the corruption problem a few times now and while we wait for a fix I was wondering if there was a easy'ish way to work around the problem for now.
The Thought i had was:
Partitition the card into 2 1gb partitions
Have the phone use partition 1 only
Backup partition 1 onto partition 2
In the event of corruption format partition 1 and copy partition 2 over to 1
I am wondering if it is possible to do this from the phone rather than from my pc as the last time I had corruption I was 250miles from home with no access to a pc to repair my card.
Thx Mr2T's
You can format partition on SD with FAT32 or FAT16 using Flash Format http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=851&associateid=17
and then resore your data to it.
Hi
From what I gather from the forum is that HTC said that the data corruption on the sd card happens when it tries to access files and it is switched off while it hasnt finished doing so. HTC recommends to set the Artemis to auto power after 1 minute ( allow it to switch itself off automatically instead of using the power button).
Yes, but this resolution decrease probablity of data corruption only...
Good luck
what causes the problem is the contacts connection.
it is easily sorted by placing the memory card in, make sure the gate is clicked down and does not pop back up, then make sure the sim gate is clicked in properly, then get a spare simcard (do not use cardboard etc.) and place it on top of the sim gate, then carefully put battery on top then back lid.
i have used this method for 2months now and not had a single problem with corruption
Thx for the replys
I have looked through the other thread and tryed adding a shim to the card for connection problems and setting the power off to 3 mins as HTC recomend more than 1 min but I was still getting the problem, so I was looking to find a way to get around the problem without been near my PC, at least as a short time fix until the problem is cured.
I suppose what I'm asking is
How do i partition the card into 2? Used wm5Storage and guide from this forum
Can my orbit access both partitions on 1 card? Seems i can
How do i format the partition if it becomes corrupt? Flash Format thx varvocel, not tryed yet
How do i restore from partition 2 to partition 1? Just use file explorer?
Thx all
Hi, you can read this website regarding "how to make partitions on SD cards" http://www.pocketpc-live.com/partition-sd-cards.html ......i havent tried it myself but it may work as your idea seems like a good workaround regarding the sd card corruption......let me know how you go with the partition....
I reformatted with the Fat type and sector size shown in the main post 3 weeks ago and haven't had any corruption since
I used to have to recover my card a couple of times a week and was always losing access to TomTom maps before I did this.
I had data corruptions even with partitions (FAT16, FAT32) - like other users. In my opinion there is no reliable resolution for now. Most often I see posts like "I have workaround and my SD OK from 2 weeks" and after some time - "Oh no, I've lost my data again".
Read the "Corrupt 2gb SD Card" threat...
Mr2ts - yes use WM5Storage, then format it (you can do this with PC).
Good luck
2GB Memory Card
I have also tried putting things under the sim above the sim, formatting FAT16/FAT32 and all to no avail. Good luck to anyone whose prepared to put up with this what can be a time consuming frustrating problem. Think I'm going to quote sale of goods act and get mine returned after 5 months...

Many people have also tried this and seen no improvement. I tried it myself, still corrupted, and HTC say that this isn't the problem. My has been fine after formatting FAT32 with an allocation size of 512, but whether this was the cure or not, who knows?
To OP - this problem has been seen with 1GB cards too, so partitioning is not likely to help.
I am only using 512Mb card that came with my Artemis, i tried switching it off using the power button everyday and I havent encountered any sd card corruption... can someone also tried this???
Some users reported their first data corruptions after long use of Artemis...
Thanks for all the replys, I thought I'd do a quick post to let you know what I've done and how its going.
I have managed to partition the card into 2 x 1gb partitions and installed the formating util for when it go's pear shaped and reloaded onto the 1st partition the software I use. I have made a backup onto the 2nd partition of the 1st and am now using my orbit as normal. So far no corruption but I think its just a matter of time so I'll post again when it fails and I have tryed to resore it.
The only problem I'm concerned with is that TomTom will not use the voices in the folder on the 1st partition, only if I place them in a folder on the 2nd which may lead to corruption of that one, if anyone knows a way of hiding the 2nd partition until I need to restore from it I would be most greatfull.
Mr2ts
yes, please keep us posted.....if ever you get the corruption again and you managed to restore it from the 2nd partition, pls show us the step by step of how you first of all partitioned the card etc etc....thanks

2gb sandisk micro sd problem

all,
I do have a strange problem with my Artemis P3300, or with my memorycard.
I bought a Sandisk 2gb microsd.
In the cardreader of my PC it had a problem, but after an upgrade of the reader it works fine.
When I put the card in my p3300, it seems not to be able to write more then 1gb.
If I put more than 1gb on the card with the pc cardreader, the pda does not have any problem with this.
does anyone have any idea what to do ?
J.
no one with an idea ?
Currently having similar problems with 3 2gb sandisk cards I have. Causes mulitple PC Lockups and also stuffed my Blackberry up as well. Still trying to figure it out.
Even thought that perhaps I had inadvertantly purchased the dodgy fake cards from a local store such is the problem.
What happens if you try to format them in a photocamera or perhaps via pocket mechanic (triall version available). Has to be FAT 16.
Should see about 1.9 gb available if it works.
Make sure the card is formatted as "FAT32". The older "FAT" format could only address a maximum of 1gb, so if you use this FAT format on a bigger card, you'll only see 1gb of space....
I've been there myself, as my wife's old ipaq PDA can only read FAT format memory cards, so anything bigger formatted in FAT32 can't be seen. Perhaps that's your problem on your PC and in making it work on there, you've accidentally reformatted it from FAT32 to FAT.
I tried both FAT and FAT32; both have the same problem.
I do see about 1.9Gb on both my PC and my PDA, but on the PDA I get an error when writing that 1 file that goes over 50% of the capacity. If I write over that limit with the PC it is working fine.
HTC helpdesk said to upgrade to WM6, but I guess thay say that to everybody who comes up with a question on WM5 now..
J.
I had the same problem with my old iPaq. The first half of the card was ok, the second one unusable. I changed the SD with another of the same brand, but the problem simply changed and the card was "sometime" readable.
I had no other choice but to change SD brand.
It's not that the second half is unusable, it gives an error on that 1 file that crosses the 50% border, once the border is crossed (by putting some more data on the card with the cardreader in the PC) it is fully usable.
J.
It looks like it's a different problem, I tried overwriting a folder with almost 8000 files in it (that was the one where I did encounter the problem with the other time) but now there is 1.4Gb used on the card, way over the 1GB limit.
And I stil get the same problem after a while, the problem is that I can't see how much has been transferred or how many files are transferred, since ActriveSync doesn't show me that.
Is there a limit of files in 1 folder to be transferred via ActiveSync ?
or is there a limit of files in 1 folder ? (I don't think so because there is no problem when I transfer them via the cardreader)
Any suggestion is welcome.
J.
I bought a 2GB sandisk card and it broke my phone!
I inserted the card and the battery and turned the phone on, after booting the phone did not recognise the card so I turned it off and went to take the card out. It was so hot it burned my thumb!
The phone wouldn't boot again, but luckily those nice people at Tmobile gave me a new one.
I won't be buying Sandisk again!!

8GB MicroSDHC Card

Hi -
I purchased the 8GB MicroSDHC card from Verizon a week ago. It worked fine on my AT&T Tilt for a few days and than it lost all information! Fortunately, I was able to restore from backup, and it seems to be OK again. Here's the strange part: even though the original files and directories are gone, the card still counts them in used memory. I.e., the used memory is about 200 MB more than it should be, the amount of space I was using before the card crashed. This applies whether I check the memory on the device, connected by USB, or with the Card Adapter that came with the card.
Any ideas what might be causing this and how to recover the used memory short of reformatting the card?
Thanks!
If you could tell us what you did for it to crash it would help
You probably tried to partition it or something...?
Looks like you will have to format the whole card.
Maybe there is a simple way to do this but here is how i would do, if it helps :
- install WM5Storage on your PDA main memory
- start wm5storage with the option memory card and connect your PDA to your PC
Activsync then wont be sync'ing and your memory card will be seen from your PC as an USB-key. Open it on your PC and check to make sure it is your memory card that you see (and not your PDA main memory).
Then use whatever format tool to format your "USB key" with FAT like format, for example you can use HPtool (be carefull to format the key and not another drive !!!).
After this do not forget to turn off wm5storage, otherwise you will not be able to "see" the memory card on PDA side...
Hope it helps, let us know...
by the way maybe you could try this :
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
I've used it sometimes when i had started to format a hard drive instead of an usb key by mistake.
Windows was asking for formating everytime i wanted to open the hard drive folder. However, using this Testdisk tool, i was able to mount the hard drive and recover everything including my photos and music and stuff... Maybe you want to try this awesome tool, plus it is free and OpenSource.
Use wm5storage tool to use your PDA as an usb-key, then use Testdisk on this usb-drive, it might be able to see, list and recover all the "lost" files and heal the whole partition at same time.
Thanks for the suggestions - I'll post again when I have the chance to try them -
No luck
Had a similar problem with my Kaiser (HTC Rom). Yesterday I did something (don't know if it was memmaid - my guess, because otherwise I just installed some cabs I had previously installed in my Wizard with no problem) and my SanDisk 6 GB MicroSD was completely 'erased".
I just noticed after the Kaiser had created new folders over it (Application Data, Cookies, History and Temporary Intenet Folders). My assumption is that something destroyed my partition table (that's why I suspect memmaid, it may have cleaned something wrong) and now I have another partition over the old one.
I tried file recovery and found 1 GB good of files, but there were 5 Gigs on the card... I really wanted to find "program files" so I didn't have to re-install lots of stuff, but no luck.
Tried Testdisk as suggested above, but it never detects any partition, not even the current one. I guess I will have to reformat it and re-do all stuff.
Well, I may be saying lots of dumb stuff, but that's my guess.
Thanks if there is any possible help in this...
Ah, and when I insert the card via a card reader in my notebook and right click properties, it says 717MB free, which means my old files are there waiting for me (new folders have only 736KB of data)... What to do?
Guys need advise do you have to do any patch to be able to use 4-8GB mini SDHC card on your PDA?
I have a Asus P535. Have asked their support site and the reply I got is the max supported is only 4GB.
I believe I've read in more than one place that the Kaiser may support up to 32 Gig, which is the MicroSD maximum. But I may be wrong...
Fact is this has never happened with my Wizard and its 1 Gig MiniSD. Now I'm gonna increase backup and cloning so I don't have to reinstall everything...
But I'll check if there is a patch anyway. Thanks.
I am able to use Sandisk microSDHC 8GB can on Asus P535.
But need a micro adapter to miniSD

Click properties and then click theTools tab. Run Error-checking with both options checked. When you check your card, you will hopefully see a new directory with recovered files. You can then delete them and regain your disk space. This is what worked for me -
Thanks. I tried that at the time to no avail. I did have to reformat, and then reinstall everything... Now I'm using Sprite Backup, so everything including Storage Card is backed up in case this thing happens again.

It could be WINXP patch
I have the Sandisk 8G , it came with a small USB reader and all was working fine. However my ASUS W5 laptop also has a built-in SD slot so I installed a patch issued by Microsoft to make it HCSD compatible, and it read and write it OK but then I suddenly got the same problem that you've described here.
The disk goes blank but the files still occupy the space, even attempting to reformat the card in the built-in slot will ignore that space,i.e it shows only 5G card.
But reformatting using the small USB card reader was fine and from now on I only use the cardreader to read and write and everything is OK. In my view the XP patch was causing that problem

Strange SD card Problem

I have been using Touch 4.02 with an 8gb card for ages now with no troubles then yesterday the storage card is no longer recognised by the phone? I tried the usual soft reset, taking the card out wiping it put it back in still no joy.
Reinstalled the sdhc cab file didnt work, Have just re-flashed with the new diamond look a like rom and still it aint recognising the card.
Has anyone got any ideas??

Probably your card is broken....
Try to insert it in a card reader and see if it recognizes the card....
Yeh will have to wait till I get home not sure my memory card supports SDHC though?
I have a similar problem, and like you I've been happily using an 8gb card for a while, but in the last week it has stopped working correctly.
Occasionally it is fine, but most of the time access to the card is either very slow or it doesn't appear at all.
I've tried the following but with no success:
- Using another MicroSD card (2gb)
- Reading the cards in a card reader and they are fine
- Reinstalling Artemis Touch 4.02 WM6.1
- Formatting the card (FAT32)
- Shimming the MicroSD card with bits of cardboard as I've read there can be a loose fit
- Cleaning the contacts on the card reader
- Pulling the contact pins out a bit to get a better fit
Does anyone have any ideas of anything else to try?
Does WM5torage work?
I did the followings to make my 4GB Micro SD usable by my Artemis:
1-flashed it to FAT32 in my laptop (I Had to format my laptop partition D of my HDD to FAT32 to make the microSD recognizable by my NTFS system).
2-copied the "system folder" from my older 512 MGB card as it is (hidden) to the root of my 4GB
3-The 4GB is readable by my artemis by now.
4-To make sure the crad will be working good in the future, I installed the "Flashcard" Cab in my Artemis and reflashed the card to FAT32, 512 Bytes 4KB clusters.
The card is just fine under Artemis windows, but I gatta take it out when flashing any new ROMs or Radio.
Hope that'd help you.

No - WM5torage behaves the same ... i.e. occasionally works (if the phone can see the card), but most of the time it just reports an error
It is deffothe memory card just put my old 2gb back in the phone and it worked, I have tried the 8gb in my PC card reader and in y camcorder that takes sdhc and neither recognised it.
This explains why my phone started goin so slow it would take ages to do anything then the memory card was unrecognised a few days later.
Im guessing there is no way to repair these?
If you can't read it, you can't do anything...
R.I.P.... :|
Cheers
Gutted oh well
not as gutted as i am ... looks like i'll have to buy a new phone!
Just try to format it by these criteria
FAT32, 512 Bytes 4KB clusters
then let us know.
dude dont panic try to recover the card first before you format it. i am sure there are some imp data there eh?
use a disk recovery utility on ur pc
my best choice is Recover My Files http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
if you are using windows os also try to run scan disk
use pocket mechanic then on ur ppc
let us know how well u do
Sorry for posting...Wrong thread...

-SOLVED- Tweaked w/ Advanced Config & now Stg. Card gone

I tweaked scroll bar widths and heights (did it before) and changed default location of my Documents from \My Documents to Storage Card\My Documents and then restarted. I also changed hang up time from 1000 milliseconds to 400 milliseconds and lastly menu font size to large then restarted and now my storage card is gone!
I cant even restore from SPB Backup because the backup image is on the storage card and the desktop program backs up but doesnt restore (this is assuming I can use a card reader to retrieve yesterday's backup file).
What to do? Obviously I reverted the options I changed above to default but still nothing.
I went to Memory in Settings but it says Total Storage card memory: Not Installed.
I obviously restarted a few times and then shut the phone down and took the card out then started it back up but still nothing.
HELP please !
SOLVED
The problem was the card was not being recognized on my device and being rejected by windows XP with the below mentioned problem. There was a timeout meaning the the PC could not make a connection to display it's contents and the problem arised from a semaphore issue. I learned that sephamore basically means that there is a really long destination address of a file.
Meaning the first example below is acceptable in lenght
\Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures\Summer\picture121.jpg
The above is pretty long but within the standards of windows mobile and PC.
Apparnetly there was a destination address of a file that was:
\Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures\Summer\July\Beach\Boating and Snorkling\picture121121323213.jpg
The above is way too long for the device or the PC to follow.
Firstly, I know for a fact that I dont have too many deep files dug. Mostly my folders are superficial and located in \Storage Card\ My Documents
So there will be
\Storage Card\My Pictures\picture121.jpg
\Storage Card\My Documents\kayak pricing.xls
\Storage Card\My Videos\video001.mpg
So im not sure how such a semaphorical(spl?) error occurred.
Secondly, I could not access the contents of my memory card to investigate the lengthy file.
Plugging the card into a card reader generated the |cannot access| problem. I decided that if I could not access the data to edit/amend the problem then I would need to format it and thankfully I had just created my StorageCard backup (2 days ago) which I could load onto the formatted card.
Problem is I could not right click the drive to select the format function. Oh oh!
Was my situation useless? NO!
I remember that you can format a hard drive in windows command utility.
So I did that, formatted really well then used SPB Backup Unpacker to copy the files back to my card and it works!
Last question is what did I do in Advanced Config to create this hassle? As I said above, those were the only items I tweaked which were within safe parameters.
Ok I plugged the storage card into my card reader but my computer did not recognize it.
Nothing happened (you know the pop up window saying a card was inserted/what would I like to do). I tried opening My Computer but it froze!
Could Advanced Config have corrupted my storage card?
Of the options mentioned above, I think changing the default location of My Documents (device) to Storage Card\My Documents messed something up!
Ok after a 5 min froze, My Computer appeared and I could see Removable Disk (h but opening it froze the folder (Explorer) again.
I popped aonther memory card into my HD and it showed up as normal on the phone.
Also, after another 5 mins of freeze, I got a on my desktop that says:
H:\ is not accessible
The sephamore timeout period has expired.
WOW? Whats that. Of all my 15 years with windows ive never seen that error before!
sounds like its bollixed so
bump bump please
Have you tried StorageTools from www.softwinter.com
This can be installed on the HD and then run to check the SD card. I used it to confirm my card had been corrupted by something (when my PC would not accept the SD card).
I then used it to reformat the card - now works fine.
i would also suggest StorageTools
i recently formated my 8Gb card with it after i tryed any other method i could imagined and anything fails, including using my PC
inserting card into my PC's sd card slot, connecting HD to my PC as disk drive, poping the card into a card reader, sktools, pocket mechanic, etc.
so, try to use this software for formating your card, and, maybe, after that your problem will be solved
good luck!
Problem Fixed.
See first post.
I had a similar problem where my micro SD card became corrupted. Couldn't format it via Vista so used my camera to format it in the end. Then reformatted it via the PC.
I've disabled all the File System caching tweaks as I think these caused the problem. Generally I keep all writes to the SD card to a minimum as well to minimise chances of corruption.
As long as you guys backup the storage card to your computers you should be fine!
what worked for me...
okay, this worked for me...
I had a memory card (MicroSD) on 16GB and suddenly it wasn't working anymore after a soft reset. Strange.
But i looked around on the net what to do but
I could not read the card via my computer. (it froze)
and I could not format the card (not by right clicking on drive and either via command prompt)
I could not get contact to the card via my phone.
Then I tried several format programs to pc (pro formatter and so) and none of them could do anything and they could not see how many GB there was on the card.
But then i found the program HDD Low Level Format Tool. I could not see the format on the card but it could see how many GB there was on the card. I tried to format it via the program and the program came with ALOT of errors. The card still didn't work but now I could format it via command prompt after that. Could not do that before formatting it with that program.
So all in all.
Format your card with HDD Low level format tool (dload)
Then go to run (WIN + R) and run CMD
type:
format x: (x being the letter of the card drive)
That was what worked for me after alot of hours trying to get it to work. And works good so far. and ofcause try to format the card without installing the HDD Low Level Format Tool if you can't do it then try the program.http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2006.04.12-HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool/
