Do you use a spare battery and if so, is it the same brand and capacity or different?
If it's the same brand and capacity, what's your experience on how Android handles it?
If it's different brands and capacity, what's your experience on how Android handles it?
In my personal experience, Android is very poor at "handling" different brand/capacity batteries. For example, one of the batteries will perform very poorly (like at only 20% of its rated capacity).
Never had problems like these with Windows Mobile. Not that any of us would want to go back to Windows mobile, but a major advantage of Android phones is the ability to swap batteries, but this doesn't seem to work as well as it should.
Hopefully, maybe I'm the only one experiencing this and everyone else's phones work "normally" as we'd expect.
I've got two eBay/Chinese 3500 mAh batteries. I only bring the second with me to work if it's going to be a >12hr shift.
I've also got five eBay/Chinese 1500 mAh batteries (4 + the stock battery). They all work fine, and the only time I'll use them instead of the bigger ones is if I'm getting tired of the 3500's additional size.
But, as far as I can tell, they all work as expected, even after going through the laundry once or twice.
Stock and OEM extended batteries from Sprint/HTC. One of each. They do quite well. Usually extended battery is enough to get e through the day. Stream lots of music through Plantronics Pro bluetooth headset during the day.
I have a seidio 3500 and a hong kong 3500, both seem to work about the same, I also have 2 2000's from china that are the same size as stock but do last a bit longer, maybe a couple hours more than stock in similar usage situations. 3500 seems to be fine for a complete day of medium/ some heavy usage
That's good! What ROMs do you guys use? Maybe it's my ROM that has problems.

My ROM and Kernel info is in my signature. My battery issues were usually an issue with kernel. Tried Virus ROM AirBorne and ziggy 11\13 kernel which was great, but currently am using what is in sig.
Also found 4g to be running and doing a continuous scan (even though I dont have 4g here) through logcat so I made some changes there too.
Seems some 4g widgets can activate 4g, on startup or otherwise, and cause it to scan for 4g when not in use or even after you turn it off.
If you toggle on 4g and toggle it off it may not be enough. Reboot phone and it should really be off then (verify through logcat). Also make sure 4g doesn't activate itself on startup or reboot, unless you live in a 4g area and want that of course.
stock battery and two 1500mAH china battery..
I don't like extended battery.. makes my EVO looks fat..

I'm getting ridiculous battery life as it is on my rom. I can go two days on heavy usage, 3 on medium. I always play music off my phone when driving, at least an hour on the phone, and 200 texts a day. Throw in craigslist, engadget, and nfl apps and about an hour of games a day too.
Battery life on 2.1 was actually better though, with fflokes old kernel on 2.1 I was getting 80+ hours/charge. Haven't fully tested as the newest fresh rom has been the best battery life since then, but I'd guess it could top that now.
Twitter, fb, google, weather, and news syncs on, never turn 3G off, barely use 4G or wifi. Only bt for long phone calls.
I don't notice how crappy my battery life is until I'm on the etchings battery. They only last about 4-6 hours for me. Got autostarts, juice defender and most of my radios off..i just don't know, any suggestions?
Swyped from my HTC EVO 4G via xda app
So!
Today I tried to make it through a day with the stock battery over my normal daily driver battery, my seidio 3500 battery.
Here's what I got.
I am a pretty heavy user, using music for a couple hours a day, browsing the internet and xda forum app a couple hours a day, youtube, and alot of other miscellaneous games and other apps.
After school (in which I don't have the best service, during one class I even have to put my phone into airplane mode due to lack of service in one building) I had around 25% left. Normally with my 3500 I'm around 60-70 depending on if classes are boring or not. Normally in chem, c++ and differential equations i'm on my phone (so roughly 5 hours of use) and then I have a break where I use the phone as well.
It's now midnight and for me my phone is at like 5% and although I made it through the day, had I not been plugged in for flashing the night build #40 for CM7 I'd be dead easily.
So what's the point of this thread?
Just to sort of give my experiences with the stock battery after using the giant beast for around 5 months.
Any questions about the battery I'll try and answer!
was running cm7 39 today and also using the incredikernal with smartass on.
I'm a pretty heavy user as well. I have 2 stock 1300s and a Seidio slim 1750. I had originally considered a 3500 but I couldn't bring myself to fatten up my phone. I work 12 hour shifts and I usually burn through one stock battery between 4 and 6 hours into a shift, then switch to the Seidio, which usually carries me til I go to bed (around 8 or 9 hours). Or if its a late night, I can fall back on the other stock battery once the 1750 gives up the ghost. I know it seems like a lot of batteries to carry around but, I have to say, I feel like its worth it, considering that my phone is comfortably pocketable. I usually keep the spares in my lunch bag or my truck til needed.

definitely i can see most peoples reason to not get the 3500.
I got it cause I don't really have a problem with having a bigger phone, and I kinda like the way it feels with the larger battery cause i have really big hands and so the stock back + battery just feels to small in my hand =(
I just am glad that the incredible has alot of battery options =)
I use an 1800 battery and when that dies i switch over to my stock. Its not too bad carrying an extra battery and i rarely use it the 1800 usually gets me through the day.
I can definitely see your point regarding the feel of the thicker phone in your hand. I had never thought of it in that aspect. I have large hands as well. If I find myself in the market for a new battery in the near future, I may try a 3500 out. On a side note, and not trying to hijack your thread but, I noticed you're running CM7 as well (I just flashed it yesterday). I've had a few fc issues but over all, I'm loving it so far. And I do think it may have had a positive effect on my battery life, over CM6. I've been running my Seidio battery for about 8 hours now and I'm only down to 50%! And it's definitely on its way toward MIUI in terms of built in features.

Okay, so the thing is I have an HTC Evo 4G with the following:
- The latest RC of CM7 (not a nightly or anything like that)
- A 3500mAh battery from Sedio
- Whatever default kernel comes with CM7
- A Sedio case made just for the extended battery
I like the Sedio case and everything, but I kind of want to use something else that looks better or feels better. That, and my current Sedio case is quite bulky and I could do with less of that bulk.
But the thing is I love the insane battery life the Sedio battery has given me. The 3500mAh is incredible and I can usually go about 4 days on a single charge and with moderate use. I don't really want to give up good battery life, but I want to get a different case for once that isn't so bulky.
Then I did some reading around and found out I can still get decent battery life after downgrading to a smaller battery if I use Juice Defender and pick the proper kernel. I've fallen back on my Galilio 2000mAh battery so the original snap-on back will fit on it again. I have Juice Defender Ultimate running on it, and the last thing I need now is a kernel.
Now, I'm somebody who hasn't switched around with kernels before, and even after reading the guides on kernels, I still would feel better if I could get opinions from other users regarding them. The guides are useful if only for helping me understand kernel terminology, what kernels are, and what they do, but as to which one is the best, it's not really quite obvious.
So that's why I'm going to ask: I've narrowed my choice down to 2 kernels I'm thinking of trying (I'm afraid of that SBC that supposedly messes up batteries or something): Tiamat and Savaged-Zen with no SBC, but I don't know which one is better for conserving battery since it isn't really that obvious at a glance. Which one is a better choice in your experience for CM7 when it comes to extending battery life as long as possible? In short, yeah, I need help picking since I'm a kernel noob. I would appreciate help or information, thanks in advance.
Truthfully Tiamat and SZ are top notch kernels and will boil down to which one YOUR phone likes. For example, my phone didn't like SZ at all for some reason. Created some real issues.
As far as SBC, there isn't anything to worry about. Tiamat SBC more havs kernel is fantastic and I never had a problem. I was on an AOSP forever until the Synergy RC's came out.
Another thing you might want to look into are the undervolt scripts like ViperMod. I was running the 100mV one with the above and getting ridiculously solid battery life.
I didn't care for JuiceDefender myself, I didn't get anything better with it installed. I also didn't spend the time to tweak it probably how it should have been.

SBC can mess up your battery but I'd guess its a one in three hundred chance. It does give huge battery benefits.
My phone likes savaged zens kernels.
Battery calibration is also very important its a market app. Helps alot
Also. I'd reccomend trying decks 1.2.1 its a perfectly stable 2.3.4 much like cyanogenmod with a few tweaks and mods to optimize it for the evo, also its a bit more of the pure Google experience. The developer is great, and has a 2.3.5 build coming in the coming weeks.

Thanks for the responses.
After thinking about it, I'm thinking of trying Tiamat with SBC at the moment after all. The odds of anything bad happening with SBC seem to be really slim, and even if something bad does happen, I have more than one spare battery to fall back on.
So I'm going to try this one first and use the Battery Calibration app. I'm not sure how much this app will help since I deleted all my battery stats from within CWM after changing batteries yesterday (and to my knowledge, that's all the app really does for you).
Anyway, I'm going to guess I just flash this like any other zip in CWM. Once I finish doing a nand backup, I'll let everyone know how it turned out.

That is all the app does, but it allows you to do it from the os. You can charge your phone to 100% and unplug your phone and calibrate as soon as the green light goes off when you unplug it. So its like perfectly calibrated. I use it every ROM / kernel flash

Well, after using Tiamat for a bit, my battery life appeared insane at first glance, since it took about half an hour to get to 99% battery life.
Then I started using my phone a little with my friend to show him some articles I marked in my RSS reader, and checking my texts/email, and several hours later, I've got about 62% remaining battery after 8 hours on a single charge. Still, I'm not sure if this is really the best I can get.
Also, it probably would have helped to use the calibrator after my battery was full, since I deleted battery stats in CWM only after flashing the kernel.
Okay I have a question for the masses here. Why are YOU obsessed with battery life on your SGS3?
I've been through my fair share of cell phones with the latest 3 being the Galaxy S, SII and now the SIII. I've been through a long list of custom roms as well as time spent on stock roms and not once I have I installed a battery monitoring app like Juice Defender, nor have I been interested in undervolting or underclocking as I don't feel the extra battery life outweighs the instability of the phone and the time spend finding the exact perfect values to prevent reboots. As long as I have battery life to get my through the day (which I always have MORE than enough, I'm happy. I'm not a heavy user but my phone gets a workout during the day and I'm never far from a charger which is the awesome thing about having a USB connector to do the charging.
So I ask the question, what is the obsession with battery life? Are you trying to go green and get the most between charges as to not waste power recharging? Do you use your phone so much during the day that you can't make it through the school or work day without it going dead? Are you off the grid living in the bush and only get to charge when you are in town every couple days? Is it bragging rights you are looking for? Why did you spend big bucks to buy an extended battery? Why don't you use the phone the way it was intended to be used and turn off syncing apps just to save a bit of battery? Why do you turn screen brightness down to minimum and leave it there all the time when we have big beautiful screens that look so much better when they are correctly lit up for our surroundings?
I just find it interesting that every ROM thread and every kernel thread and a good portion of the threads in Q/A sections are littered with questions and discussions and arguments about battery life. How to get better battery life, why is my battery draining so fast on such and such rom, what is a good screen on time amount per charge. I don't understand nor can I find an interest in spending time to dissect and analyze everything just to squeeze an extra half hour of screen time out of my phone.
So why? Why are YOU so interested in the battery life of your phone. I'm not looking to make fun of anyone here. Just curious what the obsession is all about and why you are so interested. How does it make your phone or your life easier and better. Maybe I'm missing something.
Well for me, my battery life really sucked and didnt understand why so I started researching and i found out from stock you can do tweaks to improve it and so on and so on.
When I say my battery sucked on stock though it was really bad. I couldnt go a whole day. I would get about 10-15 hours of on time with less than a hour of screen time and my phone would be dead.
I dont care for going 2 days without a charge, I just wanted to go morning to night and still have some juice left. which i wasnt able to do before.

Actually, battery life can have quite a few hours difference depending on your settings, apps, kernel settings and ROM you run. So yes, it does matter if you can get 3.5hrs on screen instead of 1.5hrs.
People don't want to have to carry their charger with them all the time in fear of their phone dying on them in the middle of the day.
For me it is just the simple fact that I can run my phone for almost 2 full days without a charge (not kidding either). But I would venture to say that for most, it is because of the whole reason why many are here. We're Tweakers and no I don't mean Meth addicts. We do it because we can. I don't undervolt at all but I do overclock my kernels a bit (not max) but have found a really nice balance that will give me plenty of time using my phone and not having to worry about charging. Yup, I use my phone.
I smile to myself when I see these screen shots and the line is smooth and flat. Not sure if you are a skier or not but a good analogy is if you see a Double-Black Diamond (expert/steep), there is something wrong. If you see a Blue-Square (intermediate/nice slope) then you are good to go. Green-Circle (begginner/very low gradiant) means that noting is running.
Btw moving to Q&A
I feel the same as the OP. I don't OC/UV for pretty much the same reasons. I don't care. I have run Juice Defender in the past on stock setting values because I was basically lazy and didn't feel like tweaking the sh*t out of it to get the "best" battery life. Not to mention I don't like that it literally turns off your cell radio and initializes it in incremental intervals. I have actually been running an app called One Power that is free on the Play Store and have found it does improve my battery life mostly when my device is idle. But I, like you, am hardly obsessed with getting the best battery life. I don't use extended batteries because I hate how they make the phone twice as thick and I tend to avoid anything non-OEM for obvious reasons. I'm basically happy if I can get through a day on a single charge. I do have a 2nd OEM battery I keep charged in case I don't have time to fully charge up. Our expectations of getting days worth of use on a single charge is just ridiculous and unrealistic. If I cared that much I'd switch to Verizon and get a RAZR Maxx. But that ain't happening anytime soon! Besides, not all phones are created equal so - what works for one person may not work for another. I feel discussions of battery life in ROM development threads are a waste of time and serve only to clutter and detract from development of the ROM. Apps, use, etc are huge variables and will vary greatly from one user to the next. So, when people say "battery life on this ROM is great!" I usually roll my eyes and ignore the post.

Hey, can you shoot me a PM with more about that App. I'll check it out tonight but can you give me more info on it from a real-life user and not some Market desc/review.
Also, report those stupid posts in the Dev threads and we can delete those. I saw one the other day about 5 hours after a ROM came out (new thread and all) stating that the battery life was "Awesome!!!". How in the heck could you know after 5 hours of the ROM being posted (he was not a tester either), let alone being flashed. Rediculousness.

Sure. I just use the default settings the app comes with but you can tweak it to your liking. Will send you a PM shortly.
Edit: I couldn't agree with you more on the battery life postings 5 hours after a ROM has dropped. That's absolutely ridiculous and impossible to gauge so soon. You gotta give it at least a couple days to be able to accurately judge the battery life.

Yes. My dad uses the app on his unrooted Galaxy Nexus with no problems. You just can't tweak the settings unless you have root.

I'm generally indifferent about battery life and attempts to prolong it for 2 reasons.
1. The settings and customization done by the manufacturer are stable values tested and balancing between battery life and the features of the phone.
2.Everyone know what they're getting jnto when they buy a phone with ~4 inch screen, has LTE and top of the line features. It's rather obvious that battery life won't be great, if it isn't then you might as well just go back to the candy bar phones, if you expect the best and the newest AND battery life.I certainly didn't expect my phone to run for 10+ hours when I got it... and besides buying the best phone on the market and then turning everything off to conserve battery life just defeats the purpose. Just buy an extended battery, buy the extra battery OEM and bring a spare along, or have an external charger as well as a 2amp usb charger.
Edit: When I initially got the phone, it was getting 6-8 hours on a charge after a couple of months 12-14 hours per charge. The same thing happen on the JB OTA, Im getting between 10-18 hours depending on my Reddit, Twitter, Gmail and Engadget usage, though I have to admit there are sometimes problems with some apps preventing deep sleep and occasionally what seems to be memory leaks with apps constantly using the data connection.

I like pushing it to see how far the battery can go. I could make it through the day before, but with some compromises. I bought an extended battery and flashed a new rom (which came with some good kernel settings to mess with), and now I can keep everything on and go two days without a charge.
For me it's more about getting what I'm used to--recently switched to gs3 from an iPhone 4, which had amazing battery life. I got around 8 hours screen on with that and initially only 3 with the gs3. So I tweaked away and now it's back to what I expect!
Edit: also I tweaked my way to better battery life because I can--why settle for something that could be better?

Hello, I've been thinking of switching to an AOSP-based ROM. However, I want to know if the battery life will be better or worse, and I need opinion from people who have tried an AOSP-based ROM.
I've heard that they give better battery life on other devices.
I'm not asking for "which ROM is the best", but I am asking what your experience is like with battery life, so I have full confidence that this kind of thread should be allowed. Thanks.
I personally haven't noticed a difference between the two. I'm currently running Candy5 and set the IO Scheduler to 'row'. It lasts me throughout the day. But to be fair, I don't use my phone very heavily. With heavy gaming, I'll go about 2-3 hours from a full charge to about 25% charge. I don't know if this is something that is universal or not, but the phone gets REALLY hot after about 5 min. of gaming.
