Data Connections Setup? - HTC Excalibur

After a clean firmware install, I don't have any data service anymore. I can't check email or get on Internet Explorer. It tells me to set up the connection in the phone settings.
I'm sure this is a common problem, does anybody know what I'm supposed to be setting up? I just have the regular T-Mobile unlimited data plan.

thanks ..but now my error is Error Requested content 'www.google.com ' cannot be accessed. You do not have access to the site
I read that, if you're having trouble, having TWO T-Mobile data connections under Settings -> Connections can help.
I'm using the $5.99 plan with the WinMo 6.0 ROM my phone came with, but I want to go to 6.1 soon.
Edit:// Also, if you JUST turned on your 5.99 plan at my.t-mobile.com, it may not have taken effect yet. Give it 24 hours.

maybe tri the wifi router cab should be floating around here somewhere
Be careful though...depending on your carrier, and their data plan, it might be considered tethering, and they could sock you for a huge fee if you get silly downloading a ton of stuff. I use mine once in a while, to check email or one or two web pages, when I'm in an area where I don't have wi-fi for my laptop.

In addition, there is a standard application on WM called Internet Sharing - it's for tethering via a USB cable.

I'm on Tmobile and can't seem to get this to work. The WiFi Router sharing works fine, but the USB cable does not. It says it's connected to the internet but nothing ever happens and windows network troubleshooting says it can't resolve a DNS server. I'd just use the WiFi but I don't have a card in my desktop. Any suggestions?

If you're attempting to use the Internet Sharing app to no avail, try changing the Network Connection drop down, inside of the app. Try selecting T-Mobile Data, as opposed to T-Mobile Internet, and it should work for ya...peace...

That drop down has TMo Data, TMo MMS, and TMo WModem Link. I was using data like you said, and it didn't work. You can also set up new connections or edit the config on existing but nothing stands out as out of place to me.

Disable Data Connections

Please don't flame me for not searching an answer for this, but I've been looking for 2 hours without success for a solution.
I have a Touch Pro2 that is for a buddy, so not even my phone, and she has no data allowance in her contract, so any weather lookup, microsoft My Phone or internet connections are going to cost her dearly till she sorts out a new Sim & contract.
Is there an easy way to turn data connections off, leaving the SMS service alone, then to switch it back on in the future when the Sim is changed? I know that on my own HD2 if you simply turn off data connection in the comm manager it switches back on when the phone is reset or thinks that data is needed.
I'd appreciate any help or pointers please! I'm going blind on these forums!
Here you go Try this. http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
it is called NoData
Excellent! Thankyou! and this will survive soft resetting with the data still disabled, and allow SMS but not MMS?
Thanks for the help. I might actually have this done by the time my buddy is due to pick it up now
I think it does. I never used it so I can't say anything about it.

B-I-N-G-O-----spells Bingo!
Also you can search for 1 minute auto gprs disconnect
another good solution is to:
menu>settings>Connections>connection setup, change your country to other country. GPRS will invalid. still SMS and call can be working perfect.
Can't find any of those settings

I can find neither of these settings on my Energy ROM (which I flashed right after I got it).
I also found this, which would be my preferred solution - if I could find it. :

I think I have managed to disable the data connection by going into the settings:
Menu> Settings> Wireless Controls> Mobile Networks> Access Point names
And then geting rid of all except the T-mobile UK settings and then renaming the APN to general.t-mobile.uks (just added an "s").

I did ask this in the Energy ROM thread, but nobody answered me there. But I am looking for a general solution (without extra software), since I'm not sure I really want to stick with this ROM.
Thanks in advance for your time!
I use this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=610657
It is great! You can enable disable conections (Internet, MMS, WAP etc.) Also is soft reset resistant =P

No Auto data connection

Hi there,
Maybe I haven't searched in the right area's, but I certainly have had a look around and couldn't find anything to match my exact issue.
I've just purchased an HTC Desire from Telstra in Australia, but I'm based in New Zealand and so didn't want or need all of the built in Telstra stuff so I rooted the device and installed the HTC official Froyo build for the device.
All worked perfectly and the upgrade was successful and all I needed to do was to add 2 APN's, one for mobile data and one for MMS.
Now they connect up perfectly when I manually connect them, but if I open up Internet for example, I'd have expected it to automatically connect up to 3G data if no wireless is available but it doesn't it just says no connection.
The mobile data APN is set as the default and has a green selection next to it when I look at them.
Am I missing something ?? I'm an Android newbie so please excuse this if it's something obvious and I'm being dumb !
Geeeez I'd have expected someone to have been able to answer what I'm sure is such a simple feature / expectation.
All my previous windows mobile devices just hooked up with WIFI if available and 3G if not, I didn't have to manually connect. As soon as a program needed access to 3G it just hooked up and did what it needed.
One thing I was hoping for in Android was that it would hook up as the windows mobile did, but would switch itself off if it wasn't used for a while......... something Windows Mobile didn't do so it would go flat pretty quick if you had it checking the web on a regular basis as it would just leave the 3G connection running even though there was no data flowing.
Come on people.......... do other peoples Android devices hook up automatically when required ??? or am I just expecting too much ?

Yes it does. Other than turning mobile internet off and on, I'm not even certain how you would "manually connect"?
Regards,
Dave
canman your Desire ought to automatically grab the APN settings with a SIM card installed, when you power it up. Failing that, once you manually enter correct settings it should automatically use those. There is no "manual connection" I know of, just enter the APN settings, or verify they are correct, and you never have to do this again. Double-check that the settings are correct. Also, if you are using wifi turn that off until you are sure that your mobile data is working ok. If you have done everything correctly and you are getting error messages, the phone is defective and should be returned.

Major network access problem

I don't know what happened, but I can no longer access MediaNet. I was using Wifi this morning without issue. I then turned off Wifi and tried to use Skyfire and kept getting "could not connect to isp.cingular" message. Go into settings and MediaNet is my selected network for both settings, so I don't know why programs are trying to connect through isp.cingular. When I go into the Connection Manager and try to manually turn on my data connection nothing happens. If I click on it to bring up the settings all I get is the ActiveSync dialogue (which is below Data Connection in TF3D settings). It appears that changing my connection settings is doing nothing, it is stuck on isp.cingular somewhere and ignoring the fact that MediaNet is selected. I am now without any data connection on my phone!!! I don't tether and I don't use MediaNet much, so I don't think AT$T wouyld have suddenly blocked me. Soft resets do nothing. I really don't want to do a hard reset and lose all my customizations and have to reinstall all my apps. What could be causing this?
Just spent 45 minutes on the phone with AT$T and after first trying to convince me that the issue was my not having a smartphone plan (I politely insisted they were wrong) they conceded that there is an outage problem in my area. Anyone else in SoCal having problems getting on MediaNet today?

If it is trying to use isp.cingular for what ever reason... unless you are paying for a laptop connect plan, that access point name is turned off in your account. MEdia Net connection profile should be using the wap.cingular APN.
First check under the "network management" page. Where it says "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using" and make sure that is where you are seeing MEdia Net selected. If so, try the "restore proxy" cab in: Start/tools/Proxy Manager/Restore Proxy

OK, I have the exact same issue as of last evening. I am in Miami with a 305 area code. My GPS, Google Maps, eMail are all down. However, I am able to use PIE to get to the internet. My settings are all correct. ATT suggests a hard reset on my device. I do not believe it is an issue with my device and am not going to do a hard reset so that ATT can figure out what is wrong on their end.
I have MediaNet selected in both drop-down boxes, but when I try to do something like update my weather tab or access the internet I get a connection error referring to isp.cingular or it is blank. I don't know how long it has been out because I have push internet disabled and I mostly use Wifi. I just happened to notice it was out this morning. I tried to update the weather tab in TF3D and kept getting connection errors. It did finally update after repeated tries, but not again since. If anyone else is experiencing problems with MediaNet please post your location.

As I said in an earlier post, Miami (305) and having same problems over last 2 days.
My outage issue spontaneously resolved this morning. All data services on the device are now working again. ATT has no explanation but I knew that a hard reset was not going to be the answer.
No such luck for me, I'm afraid.
Oops.
Turns out I am still "down". Wierd thing though. If I have the phone plugged in to the USB at my office desktop, the communication and data issue goes away. If I unplug it, the problem is back.
I tried charging the phone from a wall jack and the data and communication problem still persisted.
This is very odd.
That's because when connected to a PC that has internet connection the phone uses it as a passthrough connection. I created a new connection on the phone using the wap.cingular access point and I have network connection again, but MediaNet is still a no go. AT$T is supposed to call me tonight to try and figure it out. Can't imagine I did anything to mess it up since MediaNet is a preconfigured connection and can not be changed/edited or even deleted.
OK, finally got the word on why I can no longer access MediaNet on my phone. Apparently, AT$T did some server upgrades recently and they now have the means to identify users on regular data plans who are now using smartphones and they block them. I have had a $15 a month unlimited data plan since February 2009 and have been using it first with an LG Incite and now with my Tilt 2, both smartphones. I originally did this by signing up for the data plan while my SIM was still in my RAZR. I guess in order to better serve their iPhone customers AT$T is now going after us casual users and screwing us out of our unlimited data plans by any means available. The joke's on them, though, as I can still access the network using the wap.cingular connection. Looks like I'll be switching providers when my contract is up in January.

Well, that ain't my deal and I don't think it is yours either. With my sons phone I did the same thing as you describe but when ATT discovered it they just charged me full price for the data plan.
In my situation, I spent another hour on the phone with ATT today and they finally kicked me to HTC technical support. HTC is telling me to do a master reset on my phone and just to reinstall my apps and programs. I really don't want to do it but I am not sure I have a choice, unless someone has a better idea.

AT$T can not change any part of your plan without your consent, period. You have a contract and they would be violating it by changing any terms without your permission. This would allow you to cancel your contract without having to pay any early termination fees.
Let me know if a hard reset fixes your problem. I may do it just to see if it fixes mine. What a freaking hassle, though.
whatever the problem is, both ATT and HTC are recommending a hard reset. I am not happy about it but I may have no choice.

I'm tempted to do the same just to see if it works. I can't believe they suddenly cut me off from MediaNet, but not wap.cingular. I think Tech Support is full of it.

Define what you mean by MEdiaNet? Because he MEdiaNet section of at&t's service (IE, the MEdiaNet home page) is only accessible via the wap.cingular APN and proxy enabled.
Sounds more like the proxy is not enabled on your phone, IMO.
well, I did check my proxy and the phone was still giving me data issues.
I cleared the phone and went back to factory settings. I reinstalled GoogleMaps and my pop email. Both worked fine!
I then did a full restore from backup. My problem was back. Although I did not make any changes prior to the phone faulting, something that is installed is interferring with the phones data connections and I will have to eliminate one app at a time to see which it is.

How did you 'check' the proxy settings? And of course, all you did was restore the problem with a backup of corrupted settings.
I may be wrong, but I don't think an app caused this problem.
Well, the proxy was checked with ATT Tech Assistance on the phone. Didn't do anything.
I am now selectively adding apps. I restored my PIM so my contacts and appointments are all back. When I added Pocket Internet Explorer there was a problem and so I removed it. Problem resolved. Just added Skyfire and seems ok. I have added back my SPB stuff (PP, Weather, Wallet, BackUp, MS), GoogleMaps. I don't have any more time to dcik around with this so I am calling it a day and will play with it a bit more over the next couple of days to see if I can narrow down the problem.

just so you know, if you have ANY of your other phones that is NOT a smart phone, you can have them make that your primary phone using the IMEI number on that phone. Then it wont matter what phone you put your sim card in, because the plan rates will have to go by the phones IMEI number they have on file as your PRIMARY phone. I have gone through many supervisors with AT&T, and they confirm (without actually saying so) that as long as they have an IMEI number listed on the account that is NOT a smart phone, then they cannot make you change your data plan. Just FYI. They tried to do it to me, and I made them put my plan back, and it was a grandfathered plan, so it was a little bit of a pain, but I have a old plan, that has earlier nights and weekends, unlimited data, unlimited text, etc, all on a family plan. They thought they were slick, but Im smarter than that.
