Hi all,
Since some time now I started to have random failures. It can be anything:
- freezing on call
- freezing on SMS
- suddenly emty contact-list/calendar/......
- programs not starting anymore
- and the list goes on and on
Usually a soft-reset fixes things, sometimes a hard-reset is needed.
Although I've always been able to resolve the problem, it's very annoying, because I kind of lost the trust in my phone by now. Because of the random errors I'm beginning to suspect the memory in my phone being corrupt at certain area's and when the phone wants to use that specific area the phone freezes or corrupts something.
I'd like to know if there is a tool or a program available to test the memory in my artemis?
edit: I'm running Tom's "Oops Black WWE"-ROM with GSM Radio 03.21.90. I used to run the official HTC WM6 ROM (in dutch), but at first I thought it was the software so i loaded this ROM, but it didn't help.

Since I've installed Rom 1.40, I've literally never been able to use Bluetooth without doing two consequtive soft resets. Bad case of "insufficient driver memory" -- I don't know if anybody else has it that bad? I've read all the posts about this and nothing seems to help in my case (BA with Rom 1.40, BT 3900, NOT running SPB Pocket plus).
Anyway, I did a routine pc backup just now with Sprite, which kills all processes first. When the backup is complete, it always prompts to perform a soft reset (in order to resume all processes that are normally loaded at startup, I guess). I was wondering what would happen if I didn't do this so I pressed cancel. Then I tried to turn on Bluetooth -- and voilĂ , it worked.
Ok, guess it's pretty logical, anyone could have figured out that some running process must cause the "insufficient driver memory" error. But I'd like to examine this further and find out which process exactly, hoping I might one day be able to use Bluetooth by killing that process (if it's nothing vital, off course) instead of doing my usual two soft resets.
So my question is: does anyone know of an application that can show and kill running processes (more selectively than Sprite Backup does), and that isn't too large?
This is a great question.
Ever since 1.40 has been installed, I feel like my SX-66 just "isn't the same" anymore.
I am not sure if it has to do with the 1.40 upgrade, or another app I installed, but I tell you...
I need to suspend the unit and turn it back on to get Wi-Fi to work sometimes.
I need soft-resets for the BT driver to work...
I'll often put it in the cradle and activesync starts and then stops right away...
(And plus I am stuck with the buzzing oscillator, too).
This has gone from my #1 favorite PPC in the world, to something that is getting more and more annoying.
I wonder how things would have been if I left the OLD firmware, the OLD EXT-ROM, and the OLD Radio ROM, right out of the box...
Strange...
Maybe a new ROM will come out soon enough that solves all these problems.
I do hope someone responds to this thread.
It would be great if we could find out which process is preventing the BT radio from working. (Although, maybe it's just the number of processes, and/or the memory used....)
I am going to try allocating more program memory and see what happens...
Thanks for your answer. Problems here, apart from Bluetooth:
WiFi -- Often can't turn it on. This is an known problem on the forum. My workaround: if I turn it on and off immediately after a soft reset, before I do anything else, it generally works fine when I need it later. Otherwise, I have to soft reset again.
Active Sync -- Sometimes slow, sometimes connects and disconnects again, sometimes does nothing at all. Also, there's a growing number of stored e-mail messages that get sync'ed almost every time, even though nothing's changed. Other than that, it usually works ok.
Whistling screen -- NO, fortunately this hasn't happened to me yet. I hope I stay safe, because from what I've read it's a pain... :?
I remember I had some WiFi and BT problems before I installed 1.40, and besides I really really want Media Player 10 so downgrading is not an option...
Well, even if the problem is the number of running processes rather than a specific one, I still hope we'll be able to kill some non-vital ones to free up driver memory...
This morning, I tried PHM Task Manager 0.1 which allows you to view running processes and, theoretically, end them, but every process I tried to end just stayed right where it was (even after refreshing the screen)!? Are there any other task managers that can do this? Anyone?
Please report if you had any luck after allocating more memory. Although I read somewhere that the amount of memory for loading drivers is limited by default, and that allocating more overall working memory doesn't help... I've tried it myself, allocating as much memory as I could (probably about 40-50 MB free program memory), but still had the "insufficient memory" issue with Bluetooth.
A way to get bluetooth working everytime
It might not be the easiest way to get your bluetooth working but it does work everytime. First thing you do is set your phone to flight mode. After that then you perform a soft reset. When you are back up then turn on your bluetooth. After your bluetooth is on then you can turn the phone back on again. Click on your signal icon at the top of the screen and choose settings. It will ask you if you want to turn the phone on. Choose yes and for me I have to do this twice before the phone comes back on. After that it will work everytime I reset until I turn off bluetooth. Hope this helps

Activesync conflics with McShield.exe and so runs painfully slowly.
This is the active virus scan part of McAfee Antivirus. If you are using McAfee, before you dock your BA, right click the McAfee icon in your system tray and disable virus scan.
Hope that helps.
I have a Cingular SX66. No ROM upgrades yet. I have experienced similar problems and have been able to conclusively trace mine to Goodlink. This app is a necessary evil on my (corporate) device. This hog takes 6+ MB to run, more than 3 times any other program I have. If people think MS VoiceCommand is crappy programming (although I love it), then you ought to load Goodlink on and watch it muck up the works. As soon as I kill Goodlink.exe with MemMaid (great app by the way) bluetooth has no problems.
I am running an unlocked 8525 showing on boot
M05 R1.16.00.60
S04 G32.53.7018.01H
B06 D 3.62.07.DVH
I have installed CRCs r10.04 dated fifth May and WiFi seems to be auto enabled on boot with no appreciable power problems
As soon as I start using the phone, everything starts to go wrong at once: It will make a call but then not receive any at all. And it wont easily turn on or off. Taking out the battery resets the unit, - obviously. otherwise the unit starts heating up and the screen acts sluggish freezes often after I have made a call. I dont remember the last time it actually received a call!
The only program which starts on boot is iFonz. Whatever else is wrong with it, it clearly needs reflashing though I dont really know with which ROM. Is there some incompatibility between iFonz and the Hermes? Or is this a clear case of flash with a Cingular ROM and then with whatever ROM you want? (BTW this is actually the first Rom I have flashed to this unit after unlocking)
iFonz

I am also using an AT&T 8525 and use the ifonz program and have no difficulty using it - now, I do not have it starting on boot, so that may be an issue with your device. Could also be the ROM? I have used several ROMs and use the ifoz program on all of them and have no problems.

Hate to sound lke a newbie but I was hoping I wouldnt receive a message like yours telling me that iFonz works with lots of ROMs. I suppose i should reflash another ROM anyway (MaRaHox seems to be flavour of the month at the moment and I tend to stay with successful flashes) and wonder how I can isolate the problem?
Even worse, mine is a direct flash from Cingular (meaning there is unlikely to be interim corruption which could be cured by reflashing the manufacturer's ROM) so I cant really reflash the Manuf and hope the problem will go away
I would go for CRC 11.2 myself, Thats what MaRaHox's is based on, well, no I think his last rom was based on 12.3 (?)
I use CRC's 12.4 and find it very fast and stable (bar glitch between HTC button (yuck) and the themes)
I noticed this after I set up direct push email. Wondering if anyone else is having the same issue.
BTW I'm using the Premier Plus Rom and Mail 2 Web free push service
mine is, dont know why but just started recently after re flashing to artemies love rom 4.1.
Sometimes it shuts down when it wants to, freezes when it wants to and received sms notification dont work even after you have set it in the phone settings.
I reckon didnt flash properly so i am going to do it again. I hate flashing.

Thanx for replying but I think I've narrowed it down to a storage card issue. i noticed that it woud freeze for abouta full minute when I had a particular program open that I run from the storage card. I moved it to the Device memory and today it still froze, but I could at least turn the device on and off.
Now that I think about it, I noticed this freezing after i reflashed to the Premium Plus ROM with SDHC support. I upgraded from a 2GB Card to a 4GB Card. So it could be the SDHC drivers or just the card itself. I'm going to switch back to the 2GB card for a few days to see if it happens again.
That's as far as I'll gotten. These observations were made after a hard reset.
And I know what you mean about reflashing. You hare to reinstall everything. But it's good to do at least once a year.

I have very similar issues on mine.
I had the Oops v1.0 on it, then thought it had been a while since I last flashed, and perhaps that was the reason it froze often no logical reason to think this ! I KNOW).
So I flashed it with another ROM, and it does exactly the same. I have searched on this forum and seen some HTC do this as well.
UPDATE:
I have now narrowed it down to this:
I discovered that if I restart my Atremis and use it as normal or leave it on a stable table or side bed, it works OK, but if I slip it into my pocket for a minute it freezes....or if I place it in the same space/place/pocket/bag with my BB Pearl it just freezes....AMAZING !
I will be very stunned...yes stunned if their any solution to this...
Feel free to stun me !
I dont have any input on the issues you guys are having but I think i solved my own problem. I moved two programs from the storage card to the main memory and it hasnt come back. Actually, I think it was just the 2nd program.
I'm using an older ROM though: O2 Premium Plus by Meschle (now retired). I've stuck with this ROM because it's been the most stable for me.

Hello,
first of all when you experience any kind of freezing, run a full scandisk in Pocket Mechanic, then Check Notification queue in the same app.
Also check Start - settings - system - Key lock , make sure that you select "Lock all buttons except power" (first option). Restart your Artemis and try if the problem happens again.
Well it's been a week and I haven't had the freeze come back after I moved a couple programs from my storage card to my device. Both were programs with an application (small) and a huge database on the storage card (Oxford Spanish Dictionary & iSilo data base). I noticed that I always got the freeze when one or both of these applications was running.
So, of course, the data base info is still on the storage card but the applications are saved under Windows/Programs. No more freezes. And when I mentioned freeze, I ment that the phone would be extremely slow to respond to inputs. I would wait about 30 to 60 seconds for it to respond. If I pushed the power button 3 or 4 times, like a minute later I would get the screen flashing on and off so it's registering the commands. I wasn't sure if this was the same type of freezing that others were experiencing.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the card or the drivers for the SDHC. I never had this problem without the SDHC support and my 2GB card. Just FYI

As funny as it may sound.
I did the above and noticed a few days after, that the freezing is now reduced....still happens from time to time, though not as frequently as it used to...
What is the logic?
I assumed it was due to my frequent ROMing of my Atremis....guess patience has now paid off, but seriously and technically, I would want to be able to explain what is happening !
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.
Since I have installed the latest official ROM every now and then my TP2 gets stuck. It keeps on displaying the screen that was on it when it got stuck (sometimes it is black, because I wasn't using the device when it got stuck). The only thing left is to pull out the battery.
What could be the cause? Are more people experiencing this issue?
I have the latest version of the Dutch HTC ROM and no other programms installed.
Same phenomenon on my stock machine (no tweaks, no fancy ROM) that gets stuck every now and then...
Maybe too much files in the '/windows' directory ?
Interestingly enough, I am having the same issue with this. I had a problem with disappearing text messages in the past and HTC urged me to downgrade to the previous ROM version, which resulted in a non-functional GPS unit for me.
I recently discovered there was a patch for the SMS problem, upgraded and applied the patch. I discovered that the phone will grind to a halt when you have a large amount of text messages in your inbox. Removing most of the messages will speed up the phone, but will not really solve the issues with the hang up.
I'll try to have less sms messages and see if that works.
Or go into the sms settings and save them to the sd card.... If you do a hard reset though you might not be able to access them...
It's probably your SD card causing the problems, especially if it's HTC Sense that's causing your phone to get 'stuck'.
On custom ROMs we advise people to delete the Application Data directory on the SD card. Old files from a previous ROM seem to mess up Sense on the new ROM.
If that doesn't work, try removing the SD card completely. If the trouble is the SD card, you could also move the files off the card, reformat the card, and then replace the files.
My TP2 locks up as described in this thread after the ROM flash. About 3weeks ago, I disabled the tabs "Weather", and "Twitter" in HTC Sense and the problem seem to have disappeared. Then yesterday I re-enabled the Twitter tab and the phone locked up last night when it was in standby. No response when pressing power button or anything. Had to soft-reset to bring it back to life.
I have already disabled Twitter. Still sometimes the issue
Perhaps it is still some files on the SD card which are causing problems.
I had been having this problem for weeks as well, I emptied all my old texts and it is working fine now....
Hello,
I've started experiencing a weird problem with my Desire. Generally everything looks fine, but when I try calling somebody
instead of hearing "waiting tone" it goes back to dialer app.
And AFAIK I'm not available as well - I didn't check it thoroughly.
The thing is rebooting the phone (by rebooting device, switching airplaine mode on and off) fix the problem - for the moment - so I'm able to make a call - but my problem is that all the time I'm afraid that in a moment I won't be accessible by other people.
Other solution I've been using, is switching it to GSM only - and I think it solves the problem permanently - but since I'm using a lot of Internet I want to use 3G.
I'm not sure If it really is a 3g (maybe switching 3g/gsm) or other thing - I don't want to reset it default to just check if it will solve my problem.
I'm using original Froyo (from Polish Era) - I didn't do anything to my ROM, and I was thinking of trying maybe some custom (clear) rom - but since this was working fine - I didn't want to mess anything up.
If you have any suggestions how to fix it - please help. I've searched google and xda, but I didn't find a similar problem.
Generally I'm more than happy with my Desire, and I find it to be almost perfect, but this thing is affecting basic functionality, and I really need to do something with it.
P.S. I'm wondering if had something to do with Market, because it started the same day I was upgrading several apps at the same time - and probably because of the connections problem I restarted my device to finish everything. But I'm not really convinced that it was the cause of my bug.
Strange problem - haven't heard of that before.
I would suggest ensuring you have the latest Radio installed and/or also installing a clean rom but try the radio first.
