hi, i just wanted to say that my findings after yesting wm5.0 this week that after using my device the same way i used it on wm2003se, that at 12.00pm my battery is usually on about 20% , using wm5 i now have 65% left doing the same thing. i do have backlite on low, and im not sure if it has anything to do with patches, but its better than wm2003se, an its only a beta copy. lol.
anyone else having bettery battery life using wm5.0?
p.s, i am still waiting for someone to explain the difference between rom and ram that wm5.0 uses.
I am seeing better battery life, but nothing I can put a number too.
Also, GPRS works everytime. No resets required.
If only bluetooth worked right!
even by Bluetooth works perfect, i havent got bt headset, so havent tried, but i dont need one so even if it didnt work, i wouldnt care, lol.
if u have that mamiach patch, for backlight and stuff, u will see the old icon for battery and at gives u the % of battery. and today plugins for battery meters also work, i have tried a few, and they seem to work.
but i use o2 plus, and that runs perfect, hell, i might even be Brave enough to try o2 active, lol, i can always reflash if it fooks up!
WM5 RAM and ROM... (for joey jojo)
The difference between RAM and ROM (for any computer) is that the ROM (Read Only Memory) must be flashed to change state. This means that data stored/flashed to the ROM is persistent and is not affected by a loss of power. It can only be altered by a flash operation, but can be read at any time. RAM (Random Access Memory) can be written, read, stored only with power applied. This means that RAM is cleared whenever power is lost.
What this means in terms of WM5 is that your personal data and programs are written (flashed) to ROM, which is not affected by battery (or backup battery) failure. Since this information does not require any changes to be used (a program is loaded into RAM when it is run, so it occupies ROM until called by the user), it is not necessary for it to occupy RAM space for storage. This means that RAM is used to run the OS and programs, not to store your PIM data or programs.
This explanation is in layman's terms and is not applicable to all operating systems, but does describe in general terms how RAM/ROM work in PDA's.
Hope this offers some insight into memory function...

Mine installed like a dream and seemed to last about the same but now its bein cained big time bcause iv overclocked it to make it run smoothly. just ordered a better battery
And battery life matters a lot less now! I can run it to the ground without fear of loosing any data!
In addition to what mwheeler2 said, under 2003SE there was what was known as the 72 hour rule, meaning that manufacturers were obliged to make sure that even when the battery reads 0% and the device shuts off there is still enough power to keep the ram contents stored for a period of 72 hours, so in other words a large proportion of the battery capacity was used just to store the data in RAM, although dont ask me if that includes the backup battery as well!
But don't just take my word for it, read for yourself:

Can you tell me how you overclocked it? or refer me to the right post?
i dont seem to have any different battery life with my 1490 mAh. But I just put an order in for a 2400 mAh, can't wait to see how this baby runs

Hi all, I am all confused about which Windows Mobile 5 ROM version to load to my Blueangle. I read forums about these different ROMs but I got more confused. Which ROM do you reccomend?
Helmi_C AKU3.2 v1.3 beta is currently the best one out in general.
Can you tell me more about this ROM's performance? What do you think when you compare it with wm2003se? Do you think it is worth to upgrade to wm5 from wm2003se? Thanks.
I really dislike alot of the early WM5 roms because I thought they were unbearably slow so I kept with 2003SE until about a month ago.
Then an AKU2.3 ROM was released which I tested and it was muc quicker than the previous offerings. I'd be willing to say Helmi's AKU3.2 ROM is just as quick as 2003SE is, and its prettier
It's definately worth considering about upgrading now.
Thanks my friend. I'll give it a try. Are there any features (features of wm2003se and my pda2k) that I won't be able to use when I upgrade to helmi's wm5?
Hi there,
I would like tyo download WM5 BA ROM, but I'm affraid, there is no posibility to download any ROM from ftp server.
Threre are some problems with connection. Speed is very low.
Dowloading stopped after 10 MB...
Please tell me, how can I download ROM....
Thx,
MCS1
My experience with WM5 was not so good. It's so much slower than 2003SE! I recently downgraded and it's like night and day! 2003SE feels about 100 times faster than WM5 - especially all phone functions! It takes several seconds until a WM5 BA starts ringing, picking up takes eternally, so does hanging up, etc. Everything you do during normal use is much slower as well. It was really annoying using my BA with WM5, and now, back on 2003SE it's fantastic again.
If you don't desperately need any of the new functions of WM5 (like stereo bluetooth headsets and push email), I strongly recommend sticking with 2003SE!
Regards,
Martin
Hi, I just recently converted and I am loving it all the way. Go with Helmi's AKU3.2 ROM as it has given me very little problems, other that the need to just make sure that I read and understand the guide first.
I did find the phones operating speed somewhat slow, but then that is to be expected from a installation that was not meant for the phone. Same thing happens when you upgrade a PC witha new OS and it goes a bit slower. But what you can do is to help it a bit and what I did was to spend around £14 on XCPUScalar and overclocked the internal chip from the standard 400mhz to 530mhz. It is so easy to do, all you do is to install the application and then slide the slider to the required speed. It does mean that my phone battery does go quicker, and I have been trying out different scenarios and whereas during normal use, ie 45 minutes of mp3 listening in the morning and then again in ther evening while on journey to work, and around 10-20 calls a day, the battery used was around 75-85, now it completely drains my battery unless I use my spare.
The best thing to do is to invest in a USB data cable which charges the phone at the same time and even if you have a laptop, you can still charge the phone during the time that it is in the cradle.
The XCPUScalar does have a dynamic speed changing capapbility which basicaly changes the speed depending on CPU percentage used, but I found it slightly sluggish to kick in and just so much easier to stick it onto the 530mhz and just take my spare battery with me.
Now that I have it at 530mhz it works even better that I had hoped, all the functions and compatibility and even works faster that my previous 2003se.
Be careful thought that the process of upgrade may take a few times to get right, so make sure that you have either the whole day to spend on the upgrade or you have a spare phone to hand.
Extra tip, and very important, dont use a external USB hub to plug your phone as when you come to upgrade it gets stuck on the OS Upgrade screen and like me you will have a heart-attack until you figure out what the problem is...
Hope that helps.
Thanks for all answers. I upgraded to Helmi's AKU 3.2 and happy with it. I agree that phone feature gets slower but I can live with that. Other features are working normally and are not slower than 2003se. Maybe using XCPUScalar speeds up the machine but are you sure that using this porgramm will not harm the cpu? If yes, I can also try it.
afaik intel's xscalar cpu's were designed to run @ higher speeds and designed to be scaled up and down to save battery, but microsoft in thier infinate wisdom decided they couldnt be arsed.
So long as you dont enable the 'show frequencies above 500mhz' then afaik your phone is in no danger, however i would recommend enabling that and setting max speed @ 530 (but scaling) as sometimes thos extra 50mhz really help. meyself and a lot of other people have had no problems with it at this speed (i know black6spdz runs one of his @ 590mhz, and thats not dead yet :wink
hmmm, so I will try it
I find an IME switch problem: After I install CE-star 2.8 r1, it will installed two IME, one is chinese "chaji", the other is "chinese hand writing".
there have problems when I switching in those IME. it takes no effect. this problem appears int CE-star 2.8 r2 also
So I know it's not really overclocking, but I wasn't sure what to call it. Basically, would it be possible to either write a custom radio file or some kind of program like SetCPU, but for the radio, that would allow you to boost the signal strenth (at the expense of the battery, obviously) like if you are in a poor coverage area or something. I'm pretty sure these are capable of transmitting at higher power, aren't they mostly limited by those fascists down at the FCC? Anyway, I don't even know if it's possible, but i figured this would be the place to ask!
I'm very happy with my HTC Desire (running on Miui) except for one thing, GPS location: It is always wrong by about 30 - 50 meters. That may seem insignificant, but I were to use it to drive me around with my car, I would take the risk to miss a turn, a radar, or worse hit a tree or someone else's car!
By comparison, my TomTom is much more precise.
I see a lot of pple using their Android phone as a GPS Copilot in their car, so I guess the GPS in their phone must be more precise than mine.
I there anything I can do to optimize GPS location on my HTC Desire?
Thank you for your help
Surfinette
GPS is kind of hit and miss. The only way to improve it is to flash the newest radio if you haven't for it. My GPS works just fine and when it locks on it locks on. It could also be your rom as well. But ultimately all phones are not the same. My phone wont be the same as your phone. So something which I can do you might not be able to do and vice versa. But 30-50 metres is nothing really. Is it just lagging behind?

The maximum precision of GPS you can get on ANY non-military device is +-20 meters, so I'd say it's more about how good your software it at predicting where you are, calculating that from your speed etc.

OK, I have my answer: my GPS on my HTC Desire is just pretty good then.
I use it mainly when walking around in the city to help me find my way in areas I don't know. But it troubles me when it doesn't show exactly where I'm standing (not exactly the right street or the right intersection). I just had the feeling that my TomTom in the car was more spot-on to the right location (and it is also non-military ...)
Thanks
Hey guys, I'm going to Amsterdam tomorrow by train and seeing how the trains don't have any electrical sockets I won't able to charge.
I'll probably have to use wifi/data every once in a while to check my WhatsApp messages and I'd like to listen to music.
Except for turning off my phone, is there anything I can do?
I am on Android Revolution (latest) right now and even though the battery is pretty good I feel that it could do better with a different ROM or a kernel. Problem is I don't know nothing at all about kernels... could anyone please explain to me in layman terms? I'd really appreciate it.
I actually did play around with a few kernels before and even managed to repack something following a guide but even though I knew most things about flashing and editing ROMs I don't know anything about the kernels and the modules and such.
Also, what other things are there one can do? I know I can disable some apps I don't use in the settings, I also know about disallowing some apps from accessing the Internet with a firewall, which I think preserves some battery too, right?
Anything more? I'd really appreciate the help!
I know it doesn't answer your question, but why don't you buy a power bank? Then you can charge your device whenever you want.

Just keep the brightness at the lowest level. You should be fine.
Here are my suggestions, some of them you might know already.
1. Switch the network mode to GSM. On GSM mode, sharing files via Whatsapp will definitely take longer than usual but messaging only will be fine.
2. Reduce the screen brightness to the lowest possible level.
3. Reduce screen time-out to 30s or lower.
4. Turn off GPS, Bluetooth, Location and Auto-sync.

Thanks, I did not know about the GSM switching.
Also, what would be a good power bank to buy? Thanks!
There are many options, but I would buy a popular brand. Brands like Sony, Samsung, Philips, all have power banks.
I would go with the biggest one you can afford/ willing to carry with you. The bigger, the more power, but also the heavier.
Note that the power bank should at least out 1A, but preferrably 2A, if you plan to use this with a new phone like Note2 or an IPAD.
Just to mention that actual capacity of power bank is always less than announced , and it decreases gradually during usage. Mine is 5000mAh in theory, but it can only fill my Hox 2 times in one single full charge.
