I'm having trouble with my EVO staying in 3G coverage. My phone is fully rooted and running Froyo (The problems were the same with the Eclair build however), have the 2.05+ radio installed (however the problems were the same with the 1.39 radio as well) and I'm living in Michigan.
At any given time my phone will slip into 1X coverage and will seem to lock in there. When I first received the phone I felt like the phone quality was subpar compared to the Hero I had prior. I'm not sure if its been a firmware issue or network issue or simply a phone issue (starting to think the later), but hoping its a simple fix with something else.
About a week ago I was on a trip across Michigan which should have had 3g coverage the entire way (I was a passenger and trying to use wireless tethering to do some work along the trip). I would constantly go into 1X and would have to restart my phone to get back in 3G. Even at home I'll go into 1X and will have to reboot my phone to get it back to 3G.
I've tried Real Signal as well during these times and it also shows no 3G signal.
Anyways, anyone else experience this? Is it likely a bad radio or something else. I hate to have to return the phone and go through that process plus root again but I might have to at this point.
Thanks for any help that can be provided!!
Hmmm, whereabouts in MI? I am all over the south east and have never seen my phone drop out of 3G yet.
Have you tried wiping everything and trying stock rom w/OTA 1.47 just to make sure it isn't the ROM?
I am having the exact same problem. Using 2.0xxx radio and Fresh 0.5.3. I recently exchanged my phone and got a new one. The first phone did not do this
Try this:
When it shows you no 3G coverage, instead of restarting, go to-- SETTINGS> WIRELESS & NETWORKS> scroll down and look at "Mobile Network". When i get the 3g problem it says "Connection Failed". I think uncheck that box and re-check it and it connects back to 3g again (for a time, but then I have to do it again).
My MOBILE NETWORK settings are: Data Roaming = OFF, Always-on mobile data = ON, and CDM Roaming mode is set to: SPRINT only. Call guard = ON but i dunno what that means.
I dunno wtf is going on with this. Im in Houston and this issue is really pissing me off because i actually got a Novatek screen this time and don't want to risk taking the phone back and getting the Epson...
Anyone else experiencing this retarded issue?
Elegant: I'm in SE Michigan as well. I've tried several roms and have had issues with them all. I'm currently using a Froyo rom with similar issues as I've had with stock and other eclair roms.
As for checking/unchecking the box as you stated in Froyo I don't have that option available... I'm sure there's another way to get to it but I can't through settings. I think there was a #* code to get to where you are talking about but I'd have to look again.
It is a very annoying issue and like yourself I don't want to have to return my phone if there's a simple fix.
On a side note: How do I find out what panel I have? I've been considering the kernel that would get rid of the 30 fps cap but haven't yet pulled the trigger in part because I don't know which panel I have - and because I need to learn a little more about it before I go ahead with it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763
Post 3 tells how to determine screen
Thanks for your help - got the kernel and now get around 40 FPS. Now if I can just figure out why the phone goes in and out of 3g on occasion. Its really not as big a deal when I'm at home but when I travel it is a pain.
well i returned my phone and got one with an Epson screen. im using Fresh 1.0.1 and it is even worse. i cant even use 3g data for more than 5 seconds before it disconnects. i've read some stuff about APN but dont know how to refresh/update them. i've updated PRL and Profile and nothing helps. how am i having this problem with 2 phones running 2 different ROMs? last rom was fresh 0.5.3 and now it is fresh 1.0.1...
anyone help with this APN issue? (i dont even know what APN stands for)
i actually am using the kernel for 55 FPS for Epson screens. would that be a factor either?
I'm and having the same issue with 3g.
Every thing worked fine with the first stock root of 1.32.651.1, PRI 1.40_003, PRL 60666.
With the second root of 1.47.651.1, PRI 1.34.651.1 now my 3g is unstable.
I don't know what FPS has to do with any of this, but I put radio radio-1.39.00.04.26 and it seems to improve a tiny bit, but I don't know how to update back to PRI 1.40_003.
Not happy
Also having problems in SE Michigan. Just started today after installation of Fresh 1.0.1 and the new radios. I also have a co-worker with and unrooted EVO and the latest OTA/Radio with the same problem.
I have a rooted EVO (DC 3.2.3). My wife has a stock EVO (fully updated).
Last night our phones started bouncing between roaming/sprint 3G, while we were sitting at home.
We started getting this error if we turned off Data Roam:
"Data Call Failure
Error Code 67: Registration failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again."
The error pops every time it tries to connect to Sprint's mobile network and fails.
We also live in Michigan. Perhaps they are doing provisioning?
Rebooting + update Profile/PRL seems to help, sometimes, but not permanently.
I am having the same issue with my 3g coverage.
When I go into my settings and turn mobile network on, it connects but then immediately says connection failed.
Does anyone have any suggestions as this is getting really annoying and frustrating.
Went to a Sprint store last night; apparently Michigan was having some significant network issues (the store reps said their phones kept getting disconnected as well), and that it was expected to be resolved by sometime today. After a reboot last night, I haven't had any more issues myself.
It started yesterday and I don't know why. Go to check my weather, hit update and after about 10 seconds I get a bubble telling me that an unknown connection error ocurred and to try again later. I can make phone calls, send and receive texts, but can't check my weather. If I soft reset it works fine. Today, go to check my weather again and same problem. Been making phone calls and texting all morning without issue. Soft reset and again it works fine. Obviously, something is going wrong with my data connection over time, but what could cause it to just shut down completely requiring a soft reset to fix?
More weirdness. I tried manually turning on my data connection in the Connection Manager and as quickly as I turn it on it turns itself off. WTF! I haven't done/added anything to the phone in a week. Is this something on AT$T's end, could they be blocking me from using data for some reason?
About 2 weeks ago I did some regedit to have the data connection turn off automatically after 5 mins of non-use. It was working fine after that and anytime it needed a data connection it would make it. I don't remember where the setting was to change it back, but I doubt this is the problem because this issue just started yesterday.
I'm on AT&T also, on the new leaked ROM, and I have exactly the same issue. It started about 2-3 weeks ago, and I noticed the connection drops overnight (during the day I have no problems), and it'll only come back after restart or reset. I think it's AT&T's network...

Maybe they work on improving their towers and network lol
T-Mobile does that also.
i get a Could not coonect bubble, and have to manualy enable my data conection. If you guys are Tethering our providers automaticly drop our priority level...Unlimited my ass, they tried to cap me at Edge speed and all i had to do was disable/enable the data conection to blast 3g...
I found the problem, but I still don't know what caused it. I'm leaning towards something done on AT$T's end. I have always had my phone configured to use the AT$T ISP in network properties. Apparently, it no longer likes this setting. Switched back to MediaNet and all is working just fine. Problem is that when I first got the phone I did speed tests using both settings and AT$T ISP was faster, so that's why I set it that way. I can't test it now because it won't stay connected with that setting. Can AT$T block users from a particular connection? I don't tether and the most data I've ever used was 280mb last month. Hardly a reason to block me.
I'm not thethering either, my usage is roughly 600 MB/mo and my network is already set to MediaNet. This problem started recently, didn't have it before.
Looks like it is something going on with AT$T. A number of my friends from different states have reported issues over the past 2 weeks with several having severe connection issues the past few days. These are people on varying devices including iPhones, Blackberrys and smartphones. I hope it is due to AT$T finally upgrading their network and not overload from all the new iPhone users and abusive tetherers.
I don't know what happened, but I can no longer access MediaNet. I was using Wifi this morning without issue. I then turned off Wifi and tried to use Skyfire and kept getting "could not connect to isp.cingular" message. Go into settings and MediaNet is my selected network for both settings, so I don't know why programs are trying to connect through isp.cingular. When I go into the Connection Manager and try to manually turn on my data connection nothing happens. If I click on it to bring up the settings all I get is the ActiveSync dialogue (which is below Data Connection in TF3D settings). It appears that changing my connection settings is doing nothing, it is stuck on isp.cingular somewhere and ignoring the fact that MediaNet is selected. I am now without any data connection on my phone!!! I don't tether and I don't use MediaNet much, so I don't think AT$T wouyld have suddenly blocked me. Soft resets do nothing. I really don't want to do a hard reset and lose all my customizations and have to reinstall all my apps. What could be causing this?
Just spent 45 minutes on the phone with AT$T and after first trying to convince me that the issue was my not having a smartphone plan (I politely insisted they were wrong) they conceded that there is an outage problem in my area. Anyone else in SoCal having problems getting on MediaNet today?

If it is trying to use isp.cingular for what ever reason... unless you are paying for a laptop connect plan, that access point name is turned off in your account. MEdia Net connection profile should be using the wap.cingular APN.
First check under the "network management" page. Where it says "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using" and make sure that is where you are seeing MEdia Net selected. If so, try the "restore proxy" cab in: Start/tools/Proxy Manager/Restore Proxy

OK, I have the exact same issue as of last evening. I am in Miami with a 305 area code. My GPS, Google Maps, eMail are all down. However, I am able to use PIE to get to the internet. My settings are all correct. ATT suggests a hard reset on my device. I do not believe it is an issue with my device and am not going to do a hard reset so that ATT can figure out what is wrong on their end.
I have MediaNet selected in both drop-down boxes, but when I try to do something like update my weather tab or access the internet I get a connection error referring to isp.cingular or it is blank. I don't know how long it has been out because I have push internet disabled and I mostly use Wifi. I just happened to notice it was out this morning. I tried to update the weather tab in TF3D and kept getting connection errors. It did finally update after repeated tries, but not again since. If anyone else is experiencing problems with MediaNet please post your location.

As I said in an earlier post, Miami (305) and having same problems over last 2 days.
My outage issue spontaneously resolved this morning. All data services on the device are now working again. ATT has no explanation but I knew that a hard reset was not going to be the answer.
No such luck for me, I'm afraid.
Oops.
Turns out I am still "down". Wierd thing though. If I have the phone plugged in to the USB at my office desktop, the communication and data issue goes away. If I unplug it, the problem is back.
I tried charging the phone from a wall jack and the data and communication problem still persisted.
This is very odd.
That's because when connected to a PC that has internet connection the phone uses it as a passthrough connection. I created a new connection on the phone using the wap.cingular access point and I have network connection again, but MediaNet is still a no go. AT$T is supposed to call me tonight to try and figure it out. Can't imagine I did anything to mess it up since MediaNet is a preconfigured connection and can not be changed/edited or even deleted.
OK, finally got the word on why I can no longer access MediaNet on my phone. Apparently, AT$T did some server upgrades recently and they now have the means to identify users on regular data plans who are now using smartphones and they block them. I have had a $15 a month unlimited data plan since February 2009 and have been using it first with an LG Incite and now with my Tilt 2, both smartphones. I originally did this by signing up for the data plan while my SIM was still in my RAZR. I guess in order to better serve their iPhone customers AT$T is now going after us casual users and screwing us out of our unlimited data plans by any means available. The joke's on them, though, as I can still access the network using the wap.cingular connection. Looks like I'll be switching providers when my contract is up in January.

Well, that ain't my deal and I don't think it is yours either. With my sons phone I did the same thing as you describe but when ATT discovered it they just charged me full price for the data plan.
In my situation, I spent another hour on the phone with ATT today and they finally kicked me to HTC technical support. HTC is telling me to do a master reset on my phone and just to reinstall my apps and programs. I really don't want to do it but I am not sure I have a choice, unless someone has a better idea.

AT$T can not change any part of your plan without your consent, period. You have a contract and they would be violating it by changing any terms without your permission. This would allow you to cancel your contract without having to pay any early termination fees.
Let me know if a hard reset fixes your problem. I may do it just to see if it fixes mine. What a freaking hassle, though.
whatever the problem is, both ATT and HTC are recommending a hard reset. I am not happy about it but I may have no choice.

I'm tempted to do the same just to see if it works. I can't believe they suddenly cut me off from MediaNet, but not wap.cingular. I think Tech Support is full of it.

Define what you mean by MEdiaNet? Because he MEdiaNet section of at&t's service (IE, the MEdiaNet home page) is only accessible via the wap.cingular APN and proxy enabled.
Sounds more like the proxy is not enabled on your phone, IMO.
well, I did check my proxy and the phone was still giving me data issues.
I cleared the phone and went back to factory settings. I reinstalled GoogleMaps and my pop email. Both worked fine!
I then did a full restore from backup. My problem was back. Although I did not make any changes prior to the phone faulting, something that is installed is interferring with the phones data connections and I will have to eliminate one app at a time to see which it is.

How did you 'check' the proxy settings? And of course, all you did was restore the problem with a backup of corrupted settings.
I may be wrong, but I don't think an app caused this problem.
Well, the proxy was checked with ATT Tech Assistance on the phone. Didn't do anything.
I am now selectively adding apps. I restored my PIM so my contacts and appointments are all back. When I added Pocket Internet Explorer there was a problem and so I removed it. Problem resolved. Just added Skyfire and seems ok. I have added back my SPB stuff (PP, Weather, Wallet, BackUp, MS), GoogleMaps. I don't have any more time to dcik around with this so I am calling it a day and will play with it a bit more over the next couple of days to see if I can narrow down the problem.

just so you know, if you have ANY of your other phones that is NOT a smart phone, you can have them make that your primary phone using the IMEI number on that phone. Then it wont matter what phone you put your sim card in, because the plan rates will have to go by the phones IMEI number they have on file as your PRIMARY phone. I have gone through many supervisors with AT&T, and they confirm (without actually saying so) that as long as they have an IMEI number listed on the account that is NOT a smart phone, then they cannot make you change your data plan. Just FYI. They tried to do it to me, and I made them put my plan back, and it was a grandfathered plan, so it was a little bit of a pain, but I have a old plan, that has earlier nights and weekends, unlimited data, unlimited text, etc, all on a family plan. They thought they were slick, but Im smarter than that.
I recently bought an Evo 4G with a bad ESN and flashed it over to Boost Mobile with a Rant. After hours upon hours upon hours of tweaking, talking to customer support, having them update whatever, attempt to update my PRL and a ton of other things, I finally got my calling, texting, and data working properly.
After updating my baseband and other things, trying different PRLs manually, I managed to once again fix my phone and get it working after customer support(and myself) screwed it up a bunch of times. Interestingly enough, it says Sprint and not Boost Mobile, and still works. However, the internet is slow as hell. It doesn't seem too far off from the speed of the original phone, though. Which never apparently never got 3G in the first place, but was 3G capable and is on the $50 unlimited data plan. Also, the MMS doesn't work.
I've tried a bunch of different ROMs as well and ultimately it turns out that no matter what I do the MMS doesn't work(pictures in texts), and the internet is only about ~120kb down and ~160kb up. I've tried changing the MMS server from mm.myboostmobile.com to mm.myboostmobile.sprintpcs.com. It always seems that under EVDO Engineering in the ##debug# menu it always either says 0 = Not Authenticated or some number and =, ie 62=62=62=62=(or once or twice earlier but not ever lately 2 = Authentication failed).
Along with that, the voicemail icon doesn't work and it seems that sometimes calls will be dropped and go straight to voicemail with no notification, no ring or anything. There's no way for me to know when or how often this happens so I'm constantly checking my voicemail. I've looked all over, tried more things than not and it really seems like I'm running out of options..
Thanks in advance
EDIT: So apparently after messing the last ROM my MEID(as shown in my nai of profile 0) has changed back to the original MEID/ESN/whatever of the Evo, not the donor phone. However, the internet is still working fine, as is voice. I'm not sure if I'm going to mess with putting it back for now, since it's a pain in the ass to re-write NV items and all of that.
_____________________________________________________
edit 2: it seems like after flashing the last ROM my ESN/MEID is back to the donor's information..
try just flashing a rooted stock 4.67 sense rom and update your prl, then data profile
for mms under ##data# enter the url as follows
http://mm.myboostmobile.com
Thanks for the reply,
I installed a rooted stock 4.67 sense ROM. Same as with all of the other ROMs, I get an error 67 when I try to update my PRL and profile. The internet seems even slower. EVDO is still 0 = Inactive. Voice works, but calls are on occasion being dropped(straight to voicemail) and I don't believe MMS works, after changing the MMS server. Updating it manually to the latest(60868) PRL wasn't possible because ##prl# wouldn't work, but it's already updated to 60868. Nothing has changed except the fact that I'm now on the stock ROM and the internet might be slower than with any other ROMs.
______________________________
edit: now a lot of my calls are getting dropped and I'm getting an error 16 when trying to dial out. It seems that if the 3G symbol isn't there(which isn't even 3G, rather data), the call will fail to complete. It won't always fail if the 3G symbol isn't there, though. This really sucks..makes it seem like I should just drop trying to get data and MMS working and switch to a cheaper plan or something.
Update: turns out MMS works on the stock sense ROM
Update 2: That and it seems that ##768# factory reset gets everything to work(with still slow internet) but with the original MEID of the Evo. If I could somehow get the donor's phone information on the phone before the hands free activation actually started..
Now the EVDO Engineering status is going between 1 = Init and 0 = Inactive, but the authentication now says that it failed. Before putting the proper information via QPST on the phone, the EVDO stays inactive and unauthenticated. After putting the proper information in, EVDO tries to work but fails activation, 2 = failed authentication. Feels so close..
Nothing's changed but I believe I'll be able to get it to work if I could somehow pause the hands free activation after resetting ##786#, enter the proper HA/AAA passwords, and continue with the proper information..
It makes sense, after hands free activation before putting in the passwords internet is slow and EVDO says 0 = Not Authenticated. After hands free activation and then putting in the proper info there's no data and EVDO says 2 = Authentication Failed.
Does anyone know how to get the phone into diagnostic mode while in recovery? I'm pretty sure that'd do it, and then the phone would have the proper information, THEN activate. Either that, or if I could somehow start hands free activation without a reset after putting the right stuff in.
Thanks in advance..
You cant.
If I were you I would reflash the phone.
I've reflashed at least 10 times with 4 different ROMs, different kernels, baseband versions, all with the exact same results except most recently MMS working with the stock rooted sense ROM. The biggest problem at this point is probably the fact that a good portion of calls are going straight to voicemail and there's no way for me to know about it unless I manually check my voicemail. The speed of the internet is reported to be around 120 kb/s down and 160 up, in reality it's more like 10(ie when downloading from the play store). I've tried every single thing I've found on the topic on XDA and another large forum. Nothing has changed the end result of slow internet speeds, and lack of EVDO authentication.
No, not reflash the ROM.
Reflash the phone, or start at reflashing your items.
solved
So I found someone locally that claimed they could do it and I took them up on their offer. He told me that my profile 1 wasn't changed, so apparently I couldn't write profile 1. That was what was causing all of the problems. I think it might have something to do with the fact that nv item 1192 gave me an access denied instead of working and regardless of what I tried it wouldn't work.. Oh well. Thank god it works.
I'm kinda new to this whole rooting thing. I managed to flash the latest PA on my G2 and everything is going swimmingly, except that it cannot seem to maintain a connection with my Network Extender. It'll just go back and forth between "no service" and "something that kinda looks like service". I have no idea what part of the stack is causing the issue, and it connects to the actual verizon network just fine when the network extender is disabled (for whatever that's worth. The network out here is awful, thus the need for the extender in the first place).
Does anyone have any idea what could cause an issue like this? It's kind of a dealbreaker for me if I can't fix this, and I don't particularly want to go back to stock.
Thanks!
Edit: Maybe the actual network and the network extender are fighting or something? Oddly, the network that it claims it has is Sprint for the split seconds where it does have connection.
