Hello all Im back. I have been away for a a bit with my ipaq6915 but never really got on that well with it. It was not really that good at any of the things it tried to be.
Anyway. Have ordered my o2 Orbit today with the sat nav kit.
Do I need to do anything to the orbit on first boot up?
I already have tomtom 5.1 which I paid for with the Ipaq. Is copilot any better ?

Hiya,
I'm a newbie at this Nav stuff, and I've never seen either before.. but here's this for starters..
I bought the Orbit with CoPilot as an add on.
It works well apart from a few niggles (nothing in life is perfect )
I liked the screen layout and the way you access stuff. I liked the 2d display of directions and the simplicity of directions.
I didn't like it bursting into action every time the Orbit received an incoming call.
I then ordered TomTom 6. Straight away liked the way you install from DVD and accessories you could build on. Lots of them!
I Did not like the exit button on the third screen, and I'm slightly warming to the way of accessing info by clicking on the map display.
Hope that's ok for starters.
-- See Tom Tom 6 and Artemis. Initial Impressions. -- in Artemis/ Accessories section.

Hi Everyone,
I'm using the xda mini s at the moment and love it. Would obviously really like to add integrated GPS though.
3G is of little interest to me, so the Orbit looks perfect.
Only problem...no keyboard. How have you guys got round that? I simply cannot be bothered to always use the stylus.....will it be pointless for me then? Or have they managed to create a good alternative.
Would appreciate anyones views and experiences.
Thanks
HPJ
well i dont have orbit however played with it for a while when my friend got one.
What can i say. Trackball and wheel solution are good, imo much better to navigate phone then normal joypad.
However. It doesnt have a keyboard
So already having external Bluetooth gps i see no reason why i would buy orbit instead of hunting for htc herald which is the same factor but with keyboard...
And that would be ( and in fact will be ) my choice. Of course question now where to get herald from as it retails for £300+... i would just wait until my upgrade time comes and buy something else and sell it in order to finance new herald.
I had a wizard before the Orbit. Have to admit that I do miss the "real" keyboard and havent really found an on screen keyboard that makes entering text as easy. I did only use it occasionally though and love the size and look of the Orbit so it seems to more than make up for it in my opinion.
Hi, I've recently upgraded from a Mini S to the Orbit.
I've not really missed the keyboard, but I guess it depends on how you use the device. I've installed the T9 phonepad .cab file that's available on here & I use that for sending text messages. Why the hell it wasn't included as standard I have no idea - seems daft cos if i remember correctly, it is included on the Mini S :s
If you use your device to enter a lot of text though, e.g. sending emails or using it to edit word documents, then you might find the on-screen keyboard very fiddly to use.
I manage to successfully type on the software keyboard with my two thumbs using the Xda Orbit in landscape mode, I make a few errors but I'm used to making and correcting those on a PC keyboard anyway so I get by. Something the same size of the Orbit with a slide out keyboard would be awesome but at the moment I can't see how it would be realistic.
The Orbit is SOOO much better. It's much slimmer so doesn't feel like such a brick (imagine the mini s minus the whole top screen section (the silver bit)
I also installed phonepad and it works well. Built in gps and slimmer phone are the key factors for me
It also has start menu and ok keys on the front, so 1 handed operation is good
If the keyboard was a real issue, I would use SPB full keyboard - check that out if you have concerns
Excellent feedback, thanks everyone.
Think it sounds worth it...think I'll make the move.
Also checked out that SPB keyboard. Looks great.
Will let you know how I get on (in case anyone else is in the same position)
Cheers
HPJ
I too am making the move from my mini s... gald to be leaving th bulk behind.
i am torn between the trinity or the artemis ... i was wondering on what you guys know about this sd card problem if you'd recommen going for the trinity instead... only thing it seems to lack is the fm radio!
any thoughts?

SD card problem is affecting all the devices You may check the forums.
I have just contacted O2 to send back my mini s (wizard) and
I am getting an orbit instead. My old phone is a magician, and when I got the mini s, I was really disappointed!
Obviously it has features such as wifi etc that my magician didn't have, but it was a big clunky plasticy slow monstrosity.
I realised that I actually preferred my magician, so I got straight on the phone to O2.
Ok, rant over. The point of this is that I didn't appreciate the keyboard on the mini S at all. I have spb fullscreen keyboard and spb pocketplus on my magician, and I never ever have to use the stylus. I set the icons on the pocketplus today screen to large, and use the soft keyboard for texting etc.
The keyboard for me makes the device practical, I don't think I'd still have a pda phone if I hadn't discovered it.
I actually dropped my stylus at my friend's house and wasn't aware that it was missing until she returned it to me nearly three weeks later...
By the way, I don't work for spb or anything lol!
If you read about the apple iphone, you'll see that they have done away with the stylus by using a similar interface.
Obviously the way to go!
I've always used the letter recogniser on XDA's find the on screen keyboards clumbersome.
My other half hates the bulk of the keyboard on her Mini.
I've moved from the Mini-S to XDA orbit. Full screen keyboard is ok, but I find it a little cumbersome.
I've just discovered the International T9 Phonepad from this very forum, and it works a treat, well, once I discovered "Tab" was "space" anyway!! Great for notes and calendar entries, and makes one-handed text entry a real possibility. Definately worth a try!
Is there going to be a section for the HTC Touch/elf soon? It was released yesterday. http://www.htctouch.com
I just ordered mine
Can't wait for it to get here.
OK, I have received my HTC Touch! It really is as amazing as it looks. Any questions or comments post here.
The only little problem I have had is the weather app. does not have a town close enough to me but I've solved that.
Here's what I did:
Go here http://www.accuweather.com/us-city-list.asp?zipcode=&u=1&partner=accuweather and find the weather page for your city/state/county. Take a look at the URL, on the end, you should see something like:
locCode=EUR|FI|FI002|HELSINKI|&u=1
(Helsinki is already in the weather file, this is just an example!)
Take a note of this.
The file we need to edit is read-only, and I can't see a way of editing it via activesync/windows. I just got a load of write-protect errors. I got a tool called TotalCommander, it's a freeware file viewer/editor for the PPC.
In TotalCommander, navigate to \Windows\ and open HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml
Once you're inside this file all you need to do is copy an existing entry and make sure you put in the corresponding weather data from the step above.
Ex.
<city name="Helsinki, FI" locationcode="EUR|FI|FI002|HELSINKI"/>
Easy
Questions...
indeed I have a lot of questions
first congratulations for getting this awesome device so fast. I think of buying it because it's nearly of the same size as my HTC S620 Excalibur smartphone but I have NO experience in PPCs...
So here we go
1. how is the battery life
(I know it will last a while until you can say something significant)
2. how much memory is available
(internal user Flash and RAM) - on my S620 I have installed nearly everything I regularly need on the phone since it has 66MB of user flash available)
3. Can you run TomTom on it?
4. any software issues with installing third party programs
5. how is the screen?
good readable in direct sunlight?
6. how is the screen protection?
Is it soft as a usual touch screen or hard as a mobile phone screen?
Is it possible to mount a screen protector without losing "touch control"?
7. how is the loudspeaker?
loud and clear enough for navigation in car?
8. Do you have the possibility to compare the speed with a standard smartphone?
That's it for the first - maybe to come more if I have forgotten something
Thanks in advance for your answers
and habe a lot of fun with your new toy
Hi!
I will try and answer your questions as accurately as possible, but bear in mind I have only had this device for a little over 12 hours, and I had to sleep at some point during those hours.
1. Battery life so far is good. HTC state battery life should be 5 hours talk and 200h standby and I think this is quite accurate.
When I got it it was partially charged. I charged it for an hour or 2 (while using it) and used it heavily after that, around 4 hours of bluetoothing, wifi and camera. This morning the battery is at 57%. I'm quite happy with that, considering I have not even given it even 1 full charge/discharge cycle.
2. 128MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM. 32.5MB Free out-of-box. It comes with a 1gb microSD but I've already upgraded to 2gb.
3. Yep, TomTom is one of the first things I installed
4. No software issues so far, but I have only installed a couple of games and Spb GPRS Monitor. My one gripe software-wise is that there is no 'Internet Calling', no built-in voip.
5. The screen is great. Really clear, crisp and readable. The WM6 image they have has cleartype (no tuning application, mind)
6. Screen protection is not great. The screen itself is flush to the phone, there is no recess like other touch-screen devices. While this makes it look great, and makes it easy to touch buttons on the edge, it also makes it very scratchable. Luckily the phone comes with a nice little HTC case. The case is a snug fit, not big or obtrusive, no straps, loops or anything. It is a spongy material with soft interior. I am not using a screen protector because the case will do just fine. The screen protector that's included with the device looks like it would fit well and go almost unnoticed but I am a bit reluctant to put it on because you already have to be very 'positive' with the screen to get it to react. This is by no means a bad thing, by the way. Overall, it feels good to use.
7. I have yet to properly test the loudspeaker. I gave tomtom a quick blast and from what I heard, I think it would be fine in a car.
8. Well I have moved to this device from a HTC hermes. Yes, there is a difference in speed but I personally dont find it a problem. I would consider myself a bit more than a casual PDA user (if that makes any sense). I use it for work, surfing, gaming and obviously phone calls/sms and I dont have a problem with the speed. I think this is possibly an unfair comparison however, as something that may take 5 seconds on a hermes could take 10 on the Touch -- but the hermes would have crashed half way
The only smartphone I have really had experience with is the N91. I found the N91 so slow I had to get rid of it. I'm keeping the Touch
Hope this has cleared a few things up.
VOIP
Is it possible to run programs like skype for VOIP on the HTC touch?
And how is the quality of the camera and music?
Thanks

Hi alanp23. Firstly congrats on your new HTC Touch. I love the flush look of this baby and would much prefer this over any i-phone wanna be PDA.
As your no newbie to PPC's, you'll undoubtedly be aware that you can overclock the TiOmap processor to about 240- 260Mhz without issue.
I found my old overclocked HTC Prophet outperformed my 400Mhz Hermes. Fancy that!!
Anyway...cut to the chase. I know you have hardly had your device for a few minutes, but would you mind making your ROM/extended ROM visible and seeing if there is a cab file for the Cube Touch software? If you are able to extract it and upload it here or to the Athena forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310459
This would be greatly appreciated by the xda community as we could try and see if it would be possible to run on other devices.
I doubt very much if it will run on the Athena, but we're all willing to give it a run.
What do you say? Up for it? Thanks if you are and I understand if you're not.
Either way, enjoy your new toy, it looks fab.
P.S. If your using TomTom and haven't checked out an alternative, you simply must have a look at the repackaged version of iGo My Way GPS software known as MioMap v3.2 with the Quicksilver Map. It's far better and more accurate than TomTom and much more configurable. Also, it takes up much less space on your device.

Please do share where and what exactly you have learnt in relation to this.
I can just see some of the programmers here hacking and improving on it somehow so the rest of us can benefit from it. That would be cool.
Don't get the information lost, please use this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310624 to talk about dumping the HTC Touch. We must get together to get it.

Anyone else get this to work? I love the new home page, but miss weather panel now.
I cheated and found it by using a firefox plugin... it worked for me
The addon/plugin is called "forecastfox" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/398
Seems to work fine in FF v3
Enjoy!

Hi,
Relating the ongoing discussions on other threads in the Kaiser and Diamond areas I tried the TT7 cab on the MDA Compact 3. Works fine but it is a big hit on storage memory (12mb).

Its easy solution.
Move folder "intern geheugen" on Sd memory
Hi,
Yes worked that out.
Tested it and it is okay but no real great innovations compared to TT6. Going to wait until I get a MDA C IV before moving over.

Which maps did you manage to get to work. cant get mine to work no matter where i put it.

tomtom 7 on artemis?
where did you get
want to test it , i am using igo 8 now

Hi,
Only used it with the city taster map which is free.
I believe you can buy a 720 map from Tom Tom which should work. I only have 675 map for TT6 which does not get recognised by TT7.
Hatchy,
Look in the Diamond or Kaiser areas, a number of threads there on where to get TT7.

Considering buying touch hd, but being able to use gpsdash2 is reasonably important for me. Does it work? If yes, does it work at full resolution? My present pda is a mio a701 and I use gpsdash2 with 1:25.000 maps for registrering botanical locations. Your feedback will be appreciated.
http://wimobi.com/gpsdash/overview.ppc2.php
mikdyb
Ok, so nobody seems to know gpsdash2. Is there anybody out there who would be so fantastically kind as to download and install the program and give me some feedback (I know it is a lot to ask)?
Gpsdash2 can be found here:
http://wimobi.com/gpsdash/overview.ppc2.php
I bought this software what seems years ago for my HTC smartphone (qtek 8310). At that time, it was way ahead of its time. Then, after one update, the developer went offline and never reappeared ever since.
At the moment, I am using Oziexplorer which does the job even better and is supported. Obviously, I now have a ppc (touch HD) and no longer a smartphone.
Conclusion: stay clear of Gpsdash2. It's dead.
Thank you for answering. You are right, of course, gpsdash2 has not been developed for some time. However, I would still like to know how it performs on touch hd, as it it is the program I am used to.
I had a look at Oziexplorer and that will be my alternative, if I cannot use gpsdash2. Does Oziexplorer utilies the full resolution of touch hd?
Doesnt boot on mine sry

I am not sure. It does occupy the full size of the display but the templates you call upon are not 800x480. I don't think it makes a difference as you don't need this sort of resolution with oziexplorer. The maps are actually processed by the software in multiple resolutions, which allows to have crystal clear displays as you zoom in and out. Seing is believing: test it and you'll forget about gpsdash2.
Hope that helps.
ive just tried this on dutty 3.3 XT rom and i get FRamework error? sayin to reinstall.
any ideas why this wont work?
Let's have a look at
HTML:
http://www.vitotechnology.com/en/products/smartnavigator.html
VITO SmartNavigator works on Blackstone without problems and looks better than gpsdash2.
Problem solved
Thank you all for your replies. Did not get any real feedback on the functionality of gpsdash2, but you gave me some alternatives. Went ahead and bought the touch hd anyway (what an instrument!!!), and after trying both gpsdash2, your suggestions and a couple of other gpsprograms, I came to the following conclusions:
1. Gpsdash2 works to a certain degree if you change screen resolution to vga before installing and before using. However, I am not able to access all menus, so that dosen´t really work for me.
2. Tried Oziexplorer and it is obviosly a wonderfull program. For my needs it is overkill (I don´t need all those functions) and it costs real money. I´ll will certainly keep it in mind should my needs change.
3. Had a look at Vito Smartnavigator, and it would probably have done the job. However, it worries me that the program dosen´t figure on Vito homepage and I had to download from some random site. So what about development and even more important, where to buy a license?
4. Tried some freeware programs and ended up with Terracrosser, http://terracrosser.com, and it does excatly what I need and no more. I have to use sattelite photos instead of 1:25.000 maps, but the program downloads and saves them automatically from google with precise geographical calibration, and I can get the equivalent of 1:6.000 maps if I need it. So a lot less work for me.
Again, thank you all for your contributions.
mikdyb
Terracrosser
I have been using terracrosser and it is wonderful. Best thing is, it is a freeware and I can download goolge maps or yahoo maps (both map and satellite images). It is really easy and I can download selected region. I have maps of places I visit frequently and I add new maps if I am visiting new places. It also works with gps and also gives speed.
The user interface is not so touch screen user friendly when it comes to scrolling the maps. But not a big problem as map scrolling is seldom needed when you have gps. Also the program is under development so lot of new features are being added.
