following on from artisticcheese's thread about battery consumption Ive performed a few tests on some different radio versions to see what the actual difference in battery consumption is.
Right now (as of 16-01-2008) I recommend the following radios:
1.47.30.10 with an overall score of 1.22 (the highest in the test)
or
1.54.30.10 with an overall score of 1.21 (2nd place).
Remember people, if you are planning on changing your radio version, flash hardspl, and make sure nothing is running which will interrupt the flash process. The radio flash is still the most risky of all flash processes and it is possible to kill the device so be sure before you flash. In doing these tests I performed over 10 radio flashes in a day and i made usre nothing CPU intensive was running on the PC and that i wasnt going to unplug the USB by accident etc...

Test Run 16-10-08:
Before running these tests the phone was soft reset, ALL today plugins shut off (apart from x button), internet explorer for downloding and acbPowerMeter for power monitoring.
All tests again running on WM6 "V3 cabb'd III".
This set of tests is the following:
Test 1: GSM mode, backlight off, downloading for 5 minutes.
Test 2: UMTS mode, backlight off, downloading for 5 minutes.
The results vary and a pattern ive noticed is radio versions 1.47.30.10 and 1.54.30.10 seem to have the same behaviour in GSM modes, perhaps the extra ".30" in the version number denotes a particular tweak or feature??

Inital test run:
Using a freshly flashed version of my "V3 cabb'd" ROM which is a tweaked version of pandora naked 6 3.60 ROM with nothing installed so a lean install and using acbPowerMeter I ran the following tests on each radio rom:
Test 1: Backlight off, automatic standby disabled, all processes stopped using start>settings>system>memory. GSM only and phone left on idle.
10 minutes and average current consumption recorded.
Test 2: Same as test 2 , UMTS only.
Ive taken a screenshot of the data with magicss and normalised the results so the earliest radio version tested is the baseline score.
The results of the first test are in the attached spreadsheet and screenshots.
Conclusions:
The results show that overall the differences are neglegable for these tests, however I still believe there is a major difference in practice. So the next load of tests I propose will test the power consumption with data connection attached. Somehow I want to test during a call or download since the HSDPA power consumption is likely to be a BIG number.

each test involves flashing a new radio (20 mins-ish) and two ten minute test runs...I need to use my Tytn today so can probably try the other radios later on, it takes a fair ammount of time for each one so i only went from the ground (1.43.00.00) to the one currently on my device (1.47.30.10) last night. I abandoned doing the later ones until ive figured out a worthwhile test to run for ALL versions. Ive presented my findings so far to show that essentially the 4 versions i tried are identical under idle conditions...not really a true to life test.

Yeah, I think it will be the 3G call and HSDPA tests where the benefit of testing will be found.
My own tests show little difference in the idle power consumption.
I made very good experience with 1.41.00.10.
Good signal and low power consumption!
I've changed from 1.54 to 1.48 and I can honestly say my phone goes another day or two without charging!!!!!!!
Im gonna do some more tests tonight on the new format probably with some sort of download running (web n walk is usefull hehe).
So i'll post some more results later on if i can.
The best radio rom I've ever used
I tried many different radio roms for my Jasjam, believe me the best radio rom I've used regarding to power usage and signal is 1.46.00.11.
Even when using UMTS and 3G, in other radio roms; when connecting to internet with my laptop, I mean using Jasjam as access point to internet , the battery drains fast even if the Jasjam is connected to charger. but in this radio rom, when the charger is on, the battery stays stable and the Imate can also get charged. I know that this radio rom is designed for Trinity which is GPS enabled, but I am telling my experience. THANKS

My normal usage in a day means I use about 50 - 80% of my battery.
Whilst away in Tenerife I used my phone exactly the same but without making voice calls and I only used 50% after 3 -4 days.
This is certainly true. I was away in a place with no mobile coverage (no GSM or UTMS) and using the device for GPS navigation only I was able to get 2-3 full days out of the standard battery.
What is necessary to detect the correct battery consumption?

Experienced exactly the same thing when I was in Majorca. Even though I did use the phone a lot for sending as MMS (as that was free for me) I still got more usage out of the phone in Majorca if I had done pretty much the same usage pattern over here (UK) and that is because I suspect there transmitters put out a stronger signal, which means the phone has to 'work' less to get a stronger signal.

Sorry for double posting, but I read that those tools doesn't show the correct consumption because they needs power themselves and therefore distort the result... Maybe somebody can confirm this? Thank You.
A very good point. I've known the radio kicks up the power when you have a low signal, and if it's lost - I turn off the radio until I get back to a good area or it really kills the battery fast.
Just thinking here, but to add another level of complexity to the testing - while statically measuring power drain without moving the device will give repeatable results, could a radio power draw "react" differently to signal strength variations, and not be as "efficient" compared to others while on the move (typical usage)?
For example, if the signal goes above 50db (no idea if I'm even using the correct scale here ) it incrementally increases power by 20% for 10 seconds each until an "acceptable" signal level is reached. Once this is achieved, will it reduce back down - say you came around a building an now have a better signal? How long will that take? Will some radios respond more rapidly than others - optimizing power usage vs signal strength?

In a bit of the background on this, the GSM/UTMS protocol allows the base station to tell the mobile to increase or decrease the transmit power of the phone. This allows it to tune the performance of the phones radio to get the optimum signal level at the cell site. It also helps a heap in deciding what cell towers to jump between and all the critical handoff levels and names.

power useage is down to lots of different factors, one of the main culprits is use of HSDPA/3G and it bounsing up and down between it and GSM when the local Cell doesnt support it or has a weak signal.
I can't believe the statement made above about the battery being used quicker when you talk, of course its going to drain quicker, its permanently transmitting for gods sake
It also depends on how strong the signal to the nearest cell/Base Station is, if its a week signal then the radio/phone will bounce around to find a stronger one, I believe typically a phone will register with up to 3 base stations to enable you to auto switch between cells when you move.

If you want to test weak signals stick your phone in a tin box, assuming this doesnt kill the signal totally then the phone should start ramping up its power output and sucking the battery dry quicker.
My point was made in reference to the testing of the phone to see what uses the most battery and indicating that we should direct our testing at the phone application over any others.

Been scouring the net for an hour now to trying to get an idea of what Radio Rom would be best for me, thought this might be a good thread to butt in on
I currently have 1.43 with Schaps 4.30 ROM, using T-Mobile in the UK.
Is there a better Radio ROM out there for me? Any improvements to signal would be nice, especially data seeing as it's my main source for the internet at the moment (just moved, broadband is taking too long to get active )
Well , 1.54 is newer than yours based on the #. It might be worth a whirl to try the at&t dialer and see if it works? you could always go back to 1.43 if necessary
I think that's what I'll do, hesitated after reading a few threads that didn't paint the 1.54 ROM's in a good light, but like you say can always go back.
Just to give my 2 cents worth, I was using 1.54.07 since June 2007, It performed very well for me except for whenever I had no reception for an extended period. Once I returned to an area with reception I would have to Soft Reset else my Hermes would not find a signal again. After reading the recent bad reps for 1.54, I decided to downgrade to 1.43 again. What I have noticed since downgrading is the batt is no longer lasting me as long. Normally I have 60-70% batt life left after a normal day with 1.54.07, now I see only 30-40% batt remaining.

I have a serious Radio Problem...
The battery lasts only 2 hours tops whith the Radio ON, and 3-4 hours in standby.
Ofcourse, the when the Radio is OFF it goes back to the normal consumption rate...

Is there any problem with radio 1.54.07.00 and battery drain?
I have Cingular 8525 and the battery last at most 6-8 hours, with less than 15 minutes of usage in the entire day.
I had the latest official Rom from AT&T, but last night tried Schap's Rom 4.31 to see if there was any difference. But the battery drains as fast as it used to.
My previous device was an 8125 and I could have the device without a recharge for 2-3 days. This one hardly last a days work.

I've found battery life with 1.47 and 1.54 varients similar- they stink if your 3g is enabled and you're using direct push always on. I barely get the day out of my phone when I'm at my desk, not making a lot of calls.
I've turned 3G off and sticking with EDGE, get at least 2 days life.
Right now I've got Schaps 4.31, and Radio 1.47.30.10
great reception, good data speeds, good life, all good. But don't use the 3G unless you need it.
Having tried them all, 1.40.30.00 radio is by FAR the most battery efficient and stable for MS Push email IMO.
Here is a list of all the radios. 1.48 and 1.50 seem to get good reviews, but I cant remember if thats only in the US or if thats UK too...

I have Schaps 4.31 Rom too... I tried disabling 3G and leaving just the 3G. But didn't noticed any difference in the battery consumtion.
I also did a test last nigth. My battery was at 40%, I turned off the radio and the phone) Leave it on my desk without using. 2 Hours later I checked the phone, it was at 10%. I don't get it... the radio is off, the phone is without use, and still drains the battery this fast?

Was the screen off also?
Did you try that same test with other ROMs, and get the same results?
If yes to both of those ...... try running the same test again... but this time hold the power button until it asks you "power down?". Click yes, and now your phone is 100% off and not just in standby.
The likely conclusions of this test are as follows:
If the battery does NOT drain in this state ... you my friend have a bad battery and simply need to replace it with a fresh one (especially if you bought this phone used!).
If it DOES drain down in this state .. you my friend MAY have bad phone hardware or a short in the battery contacts. Clean out the inside of the phone, and (i would) still try a new battery just incase.
You may also want to run that program "acbPowerMeter".
It tells you the CURRENT your phone is drawing. I would say 110-70mA is normal. My phone is pulling 73mA average with screen brightness two clicks in from the right, not attached to charger, and phone powered ON with 3g enabled but not active. If yours is significantly higher, you have some drain in the software. If its the same, it would point to your hardware (most likely battery)

The screen was off. But the phone was in standby.
I will try your other suggestions to see what happens. I'll also try other radio roms. Reading this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358933), tests seem to show that rom 1.47.30.10 has good performance.
Will post later the results.

I did the acbPowerMeter test.
I get around 162mA Average and a total of 21mAh (for 10 minutes)
With screen brightness on the second click (from left to right, the least bright before backlight off), not attached to charger, and phone powered ON with 3G enabled but not active. No other program running except acbPowerMeter.
I tried turning 3G off (leaving just EDGE) and I got 169mA Average and a total of 21mAh (for 10 minutes). Strange that with 3G off got about the same or a little more.
I tried to do the test with the phone screen off (stand by), but it seems the program doesn't run in standby.
Any idea?
I meant 2 clicks in from the right .. so 2 clicks away from full bright is what I ran at.
I think you might want to start a new thread for this problem.
To give you some more numbers to go on ..
with phone on, bluetooth on, wlan on (and mated to router), no data connection, and screen 2 away from full bright .. my phone bounces from 80-115 sitting there with the screen on. Avg is 96 and total is just short of 8 mAh in 5 minutes.
take the numbers for what they are. keep in mind if your voltage goes down, your current will too. so run these tests at full batt.
search for battery drainage and find your problem , def replace the battery just to be sure its good. Personally, I would just sell the phone on ebay if a new battery didn't fix it. Time = money these days.. just get a new one and know its good

Well, it turns out that since starting to use WM6.1, I've noticed a dramatic decline in my battery life. I can maybe squeeze out a day of use with minimal use. If I use HSDPA / Voice / WiFi - forget it, I get 1-2 hours before the battery drops to nearly zero.
I used to get much better life out of my battery before.
I tried playing with different ROMs, then different Radio version - to no avail - battery life sucks.
Any tips / ideas / comparisons on how to get reasonable performance with WM6.1 or is this just my battery having issues?
I think this would be more your device...
To check this, go back to your manufacturers ROM, and see if the same still happens. Also try this test with no 3rd party applications installed.
Poor battery life is usually cause by either:
1) Applications using 100% CPU
2) Faulty ROM
3) Faulty Phone or Battery.
If you're tried multiple ROMs, I'd say you can rule out #2.
I get around 2 1/2 days out of the stock 1350mAh battery on my hermes.

ygeller , i had some battery life problems with my hermes and i found on another thread some ppl saying to first flash the ATT rom RUU_Hermes_CINGULAR_WWE_3.62.502.3_6275_1.54.07.00_108_UOOS_SVN05_Ship
and then the cooked one. That worked wonders for me, the radio version 1.54.07.00 is the best i tryed so far for battery life and network stability.
I'am using the latest PDAViet rom and no problems so far, with battery holding for 2 to 3 days with normal use.

Please try another radio, i used always the newest en I got the poorest battery performance! Now I use 1.47.30.10 in combination with PDAVIET roms and now my battery holds a day of 2/ 2,5!!

I have issues with charging too with my phone never charging full no matter how long i keep the charger on it get's stuck at 80%...
But good news is that I've arrested the drain now i flashed the PDAcorner pr0 V3 yesterday and through the entrire night the drain was less that 1% but it hasn't solved the drain if I use voice/data cause an 11 min call had my battery coming down from 63% to 16% ..
I guess i am gonna try and flash the stock ROM as compumad says..
I guess at least the charging issue is due to faulty ROM ( i hope)..

I agree that I get better battery life with the 1.47.30.0, in addition to aquiring a signal faster. The BIGGEST fix for me however was replacing my year old battery with a good quality Li-ion battery. Now I go a full day with hardly any drain using anybody's ROM, of course YMMV

About 1 month ago I returned my Hermes because of a defect and HTC replaced the complete inner life of my phone. So this can be compared to a more or less new Hermes.
As a comparison, I recently received a Wizard as a gift and flashed it with the WM6.1 ROM of SNN and believe it or not, the battery lasts for amazing 5 days! And that is with GPRS and BT on!
So, are we talking a major device issue, a ROM issue or is there something I'm missing here?

I've been on the current Shamanix`s WM6 Ultimate v2 FINAL [SuperStorage] ROM for a while and indeed the battery drains very quick- I've had to schedule Exchange email to be on for 2 hours now but a simple 20-30 min voice call drains the battery by about 30-40%!
I was on Schap's ROM but was waiting for his latest update. Will have to consider another one.
I have also had the same issue as people here with the battery running down very quickly.I did try going back to schaps 4.31 but did not seems to make a difference anymore.Will try going nack to standard rom and then changed to cooked and post if there is any difference.
are u guys serious? 2.5days out of the stock battery?
my battery is a 1300mAH and i get a week and a bit on standby, constant txting wifi, screwing around, i get at least 4 days.
now that i have a 1650mAH i cant even kill it in a day (wifi bluetooth and gsm all going at the same time)
theres a 3000mAH battery coming in the mail, if im gentle with it it should last.... 0.5 months?

you need to resync your battery circuit, charge your phone till your phone cant charge it anymore, then drain it till you cant even turn it on (no lights at all), charge it up again and it should be reading correctly.

I also had a severe battery drain with several 6.1 ROMS. My main culprit was caused my certain applications not closing properly and running at 50%-100% CPU. The main apps were Internet Explorer, Windows Live, Poutlook, basically network based apps. For some reason the app wouldn't show up as running. It wasn't until I got a new task manager that showed "processes" that I found the culprit. I would make sure all these processes were "killed" and my battery life lasted a lot longer.
I eventually went back to a 6.0 ROM, as I couldn't take all the problems.

Unfortunately, I've done that without planning. I am constantly fully charging the phone - then it drains and dies after a few morning phone calls...

OK. I am flashing the ATT ROM to see what gives.
Already it's been a chore. I haven't flashed stock ROMs in quite a while - had to extract the NBH file and use in with a cooked ROM wrapper to get it to flash.
Will report back with results.

Have Flashed ATT, then PDA Corner Pro V3. I didn't have much faith in the voodoo of flashing the official ROM to magically repair stuff - and so far I can't say that I've seen much change...

You put PDA into bootloder mode and the flash, no need to jumpthrough hoops.
Actually the AT&T Official has repaired numerous bad flashes for me, is a lifesaver.
I have been a user of the stock AT&T WM6 Rom for many months. Before that, I had the stock Cingular 8525 WM5 Rom, and many of the cooked WM6 ones, starting with an early Black, a couple of Custel's, Sleuth's, and a few others. I now use personal derivations of the stock AT&T WM6 Rom that I have been cooking up over the past few months.
I have NEVER had good battery life on my 8525, with ANY ROM at all. Left alone, my battery dies after only a few hours. I have learned to live with this, always carrying a second (charged) battery, and I have chargers at home, at work, and in my car, in order to deal with the issue.
I must ask, when others say they get 2 or more DAYS out of a charge with "normal use", please define what "normal use" is for you.
My "normal use" includes checking 4 email boxes, one of them push, one at at 30 minute intervals, and two hourly. I use PocketWeather, which I have doing updates at 30 minute intervals for 4 locations. 1-calc updates monetary exchange rates daily. I make/receive only a couple of phone calls daily (yes, a BIG battery-killer), and I rarely receive text messages. No MMS at all. I utilize Bluetooth devices during my commutes in both directions, only use WiFi at home (another big battery drainer, but since I'm at home, it doesn't matter). I keep the IR port turned off unless I'm actively using it. I am on the internet with my device every chance I get, using the normal AT&T WAP access point with an unlimited plan.
I feel that with the amount of usage I get out of my device (especially Internet and emails), I can accept the poor battery performance.
But I am curious ... those of you who claim much higher numbers for battery life under "normal usage" ... please explain what "normal usage" means to you. I have never seen anything close to the numbers that have been posted by many.
FWIW, my two batteries are: 1 stock 1300mAh, and one is a Boxwave 1350 mAh. Both are well over a year old.

I'm forced to agree with pvs. I'm in a very similar situation: I use the stock AT&T WM6 ROM, although I've used a couple of other ROMs and Radios before this.
If I set my 8525 to auto-poll my 4 mailboxes every 15-60 minutes, I always notice a definite decrease in battery life. In the beginning, I'd get the "low battery" notification before I even left work late in the afternoon (this is after getting a full charge the night before). In between then and now, I turned off auto-polling. I couldn't get any new mail unless I did a manual send/receive...but my battery life improved dramatically; I could get nearly two full days' usage out of it before having to charge at night.
I was fairly confident it had something to do with that data-connection required to update the mail, and I feel that it's confirmed: 3 days ago, I found a registry edit that turns off the 3G/data connection after being idle so many minutes (I have mine set to 2 mins). I can now auto-poll my boxes, but my battery life has decreased again...not QUITE as bad as before, but I pretty much have to charge it every night, now.
(Additional "normal" usage for me has always included using Bluetooth for a headset and several calls during the day, varying in length...around 30-50 minutes total talk time, if I had to guess.)
Frankly, I'm surprised at the people who say they're able to leave their data connection on all day (even if it's sending no data in certain moments) and see no appreciable battery-drain. This is my second 8525 and second battery, and my experience has remained the same.
I was going to try and find some sort of push EMail solution...but to make matters worse, I've been doing research and unless I'm misunderstanding things, it looks like WM6's version of "Push EMail" requires that "constantly-on" data connection. I'm frustrated, and I'm seriously considering getting a Blackberry.
If someone can come up with some alternative ideas, I'd love to hear them, but...even though I love my 8525...my patience is starting to wear thin with it.

Good grief. Is this the consensus of everyone? I'd hate to give up my 8525, since it has Windows Mobile versions of what I work with, plus some pretty nifty games and apps...but I want a device I can both work AND play with. So far, the 8525 is falling down on the Work/EMail end.
I've dodged the blackberry for so long because of 1) no touchscreen, 2) it lacks the versatility of a true PC (ideally, PCs can be used for work and play; blackberries seem meant primarily for work). Plus, I don't know if the Blackberry's "push" EMail features will work any better with my particular mailboxes (i.e., it may have to constantly "poll" those boxes as well, which may result in similar battery drain).
BTW: It's noon here, after 3-4 calls this morning (around 25 minutes or so), EMailboxes updating (2 at 30 mins, 2 at 60 mins), Bluetooth off, and having read 2 CNN articles (and closing it right after)...my 8525 is at 70% power. X-(

I just put this radio on my dash. It's more sensitive than the old radio 4.1.13.51_03.07.90, and edge download seems faster too. Battery drain is about 90ma on idle. This radio is supposed to be pulled from Snap.
Seems counter intuitive that 4.1.13.47 would be newer than 4.1.13.51 or 02.98.90 would be newer than 03.07.90
Are you sure this is a newer radio ?
Or, perhaps a better question, are you updating from a Stock ROM or a custom one ?
Not sure which one is newer. I used to use 4.1.13.51_03.07.90 and just flashed to 4.1.13.47_02.98.90. Both radio works with 3VO's 6.5ROM

That drain number seems really low. 4.1.13.51_03.07.90 uses about 110ma on my phone before. These numbers are from acbPowerMeter. Not sure how accurate they are.
This version seems half a bar more sensitive than my previous one, on AT&T network New England area.

Using acbTaskMan and also CeleTask to which have both the same output, Kaiser uses 5-7mA idle so seems your using a hell of alot Have mentioned idle mA many times before, just checked as the gf has it @ mo and even without her shutting programs down "alot still active" etc 27mA.
Of course this depends how you are measuring idle and what you have done previous as the mA doesn't dramatically drop when not using phone but take a while to dissipate.

i have that seido 1100ma slim battery. my dash usually lasts 2.5 days with 1 - 5 short calls and 20 -30 minutes internet use each day.

Yes it will be as the device is not idle Ok idle would mean the device not being used so the device is effectively sleeping so turn off as in sleep leave it turn it on & check the mA usage so effectively that is idle, if you are using the device then you are not getting idle as tasks are being used as soon as you do anything to which is not idle
This is why i stated earlier will depend how you are testing idle "idle when it is running only to sustain its running"

all Rom threads have a rather big amount of discussions about battery life. It seems battery life varies between 8 hours to several days. Several reasons for this are addressed and one might check this first before anything else
1. Usage. If you use your phone you discharge it. Use it heavily with all whistle and bells turned on and you discharge it quickly.
2. Apps. Some apps like to phone home, sending or fetching frequently data. For some apps this is obvious. However, some might be hidding this or they are just bad programmed.
Using Powertutor and juiceplotter help to identify those battery eating apps. E. g., VoIP- or Mailclients, etc. are candidates being for battery sucking monsters.
3. Signal reception might make a different. The radio modules trying to minimize the sending power to save battery. If you put the phone in an box, bag or whatever the radio module might switch to a higher sending level to reach the cell tower.
In general you can't do much, simply choice "good" locations wherever possible.
4. Cell search and switching. Using a train or any other fast moving vehicle might require to switch very frequently between different cell towers. Every switch consumes power since data will be exchanged. If no cell signal is found the phone starts searching for one which consumes more power. Switch to flight mode if possible.
This are already steps which helps to safe a big chunk of the batteryand all this steps are completely rom independent.
In my opinion roms might contribute only to a small amount to the battery power. Maybe there is a buggy program or some settings are not optimized. However any more or less stable Rom should result in a rather similar battery life time.
Same is true for the kernel. Sure undervoltage, different schedulers, etc. might all change something regarding the power consumption. However this could not explain this very different reported battery life times. Its more in the range of +- 2 hours.
I know it was discussed sometimes already. I believe that some reported battery problems are due to a wrong combination of libs and settings for the used radio module.
Many people upgraded to the newest radio, however the local carrier might slightly modified settings to there specific needs. Furthermore, the might use a special tailored library enhanced by functions for there particular network.
This was given, at least for the Japanese carrier Softbank.
build.prop contains some special calls and a look into the library libhtc_ril show corresponding functions.
If roms carrier a different version of libhtc_ril and does not call settings in build.prop people on the particular carrier might observe battery drains.
Even worth the present situation creates random combination of radio firmware, build.prop, and libhtc_ril.
What might be needed is a installation routine for a Rom, which is capable to modify and replace above mentioned files for the given carrier.
I know that this would work since I'm doing it manually every time I install a different rom.

sure, the use of my phone make different battery drain but with the same use, this same battery drain change with the rom installed in this same phone! and the radio or the kernel of this same rom can make also difference in the battery drain (cf DeFroST for exemple...) with a scale between 8 and 20 hours!!! so i think the rom have a lot importance in battery drain ;-)

I think one has to differentiate between an potential bug in a rom which might drain the battery and a "stable" rom.
From the technical point you can tweak rom and kernel to the max but this would never result in 4 times longer battery.
I would not say thay you can't get a kernel highly optimized for performance which might drain much more. However, in general all roms come with power-savvy kernels the small differences between those kernels could in my opinion not make such a big differences.
Same is well known for laptops. Sure a stock kernel might drain faster but even if I tweak out the very last options in the kernel settings I could never improve battery life time by 400%. That would be instead of 2 hours my laptop would suddenly hold 8 or more hours.
I belive the same is true to roms. There are some which emphase light the use of light apps and avoid animations and other battery eating eye candy. However, it can't result in an difference of 3-4 times, unlike something is simply wrong within the rom.
The main point is, nobody seems to give attention to the different modifications different carriers introduce in stock roms.
Thus, using a rom for which libs and settings come originally from T-mobile UK might fail heavily for Softbank Japan, or Verizon US.
What would be needed is
1. Awareness of the different carrier-based settings.
2. An application which is capable to modify and replace the mentioned files specific for the used carrier.

Hello everyone.
So I bought this phone this past Friday and been having a blast with it. I bought the 2100mah verizon/samsung extended battery yesterday to have a bit better battery life with it. I have patience with battery life, so I'm ready to try anything.
Here's part 1 of my post (radio): So I'm on 4.0.4. I have the radio that comes with it. I noticed I can only get 1-2 bars (rarely 3) of signal at times. I read that the best way to post about this is in dBm so here are mines: -100 to -120 80% of the time. This is on 3g/4g/wifi. And it's rarely on 4g, it is always jumping to 3g. My mom has a thunderbolt and to test, I saw the thunderbolt had better dBm and always had a 4g signal, 3-4 bars constant, rarely 3g. I'm in Miami, Florida if it matters, which is a strong 4g area. When it's on 3g it gets very good signal, 3-4 bars and -80 dBm. Though sometimes I noticed my wi-fi gets 4 bars for like 10 minutes and returns back to 2 bars.
Anything I can do as far as the Radio, some people have fixed it with a new sim card but before I go get one (are they free?) let's see what I can try? Perphaps a new radio?
Part 2: Alright now as for the battery life. Here are my phone "stats": (screenshots are posted at the bottom of post for battery)
-4.0.4 Stock ROM nothing changed, just an unlocked bootloader.
-WiFi on when at home, off when using 3g/4g.
-NFC On.
-No syncing, everything updates when I open app (twitter, weather)
-Gmail is set to push, atleast I think so. It notifies me of a new email every time.
-48% Screen Brightness
-Signed OFF from Google+
That's it I believe, if anything else is needed let me know.
I have the XDA version of BetteryBatteryStats, so I guess I have the tool to fix it just need to pinpoint what the problem is. I'm draining at 2%-3% per hour with wi-fi, and no usage, just idle. Again this is with 4.0.4 update. I'm seeing people's battery life becoming awesome with some tweaking, so would like assistance on that.

How far off are you on strength from the T-Bolt? I think it's the 4.0.4 radios and I'll get into why I think that. Note that the following isn't scientific and I haven't really tested it, so don't spread this like it's fact. I live in a really strong 4G area, so in general I haven't noticed a difference with any of the various modems (I've tried them all). I will say that I worked for a week once in an area with poor Verizon coverage, and I noticed that the 4.0.2 radios worked better for me than the 4.0.3. Like, no coverage with 4.0.3 after upgrading to it, so I whipped my laptop out and pushed the 4.0.2 radios and got from zero bars w/ coverage to 1 bar. I don't know how the 4.0.2 radios compare to 4.0.4, but you might give that a whirl.
In general, I think that radio hype is just that, hype, and there's a reason why a slew of radios never make the final cut, but with Verizon trying to patch 3G/4G connectivity, I do think it's worth trying some other radio's out to see what they do in your area.
I hesitate to say the following because I have NOT paid that much attention or done significant testing on our radios, which is something I've done with previous devices. So do NOT take this as gospel, rather with a healthy dose of salt.
In my limited observation with 4.0.4, at least in my neighborhood/area of Birmingham (I have an LTE tower practically in my back yard), the 4.0.4 radios ARE weaker. With 4.0.2 radios for example, I want to say I got -70dBm on CDMA/1X in the house and usually -72dBm to -75dBm on LTE in the house. Right now, typing this thread on 4.0.4 with the phone showing 5 bars, I just checked my strength on LTE and it was registering -94dBm here at the house when I rolled onto CDMA, it showed -75dBm. When I rolled back onto LTE, it showed -75dBm (displaying 5 bars the entire time) then went to -87dBm a few minutes later. This is with the phone sitting on it's normal spot on my desk.
Random, first thoughts with 4.0.4:
1) We know that Verizon requested "updated" display bars for 4.0.4
2) There could be an issue in 4.0.4 with dBm updating/display. I haven't been at the house all day, I have roamed around, but I doubt very seriously that my real signal strength on LTE was really -94dBm here at home. When I say I have an LTE tower in my backyard, I'm literally talking about 1/4 of a mile away, on top of a hill.
3) 4.0.4 is not always registering/reading signal strength correctly, which is causing devices in a weak area to fall off of 4G and onto 3G when the issue isn't really with the tower, physical hardware, or the modem package, but on the way 4.0.4 is interpreting the signal information it's pulling in (based SOLELY on watching the signal range I just observed on LTE). That said, it easily could just be the tower this afternoon. AGAIN, take it all with a grain of salt.
I recommend trying the 4.0.2 radios, at a minimum. I would list them, but I don't know our radios off the top of my head yet (too much Vibrant info is still in my brain). Search for them, they're easy to find. BE SURE to push the CDMA/LTE radios paired together. Like, the 4.0.2 radios together, 4.0.3 radios together. Do NOT mix and match.
Generally speaking for people in good LTE areas, I think the 4.0.4 radio package is GREAT. I've noticed zero slow down. Yeah, -87dBm (which is what I normally see here at the house) IS "weak" and it SUCKS to have wrong bars displayed but I haven't noticed any slow down on the network. I think slightly scaling down LTE strength is what has helped improve battery life. CDMA radio strength does not appear to have been affected, which is what you're gonna be on in rural areas anyway so unless you're on the fringe of LTE signal like the OP, I don't think this radio package is anything to complain or be worried about.

Also, in my experience as someone that travels all over for work, the only time that "weak" signal drains battery is when you're on the fringe of no connection and the OS is boosting power to the cell antenna's. On the old/real signal indicator, this was when you had a connection to Verizon with 0 bars and it was boosting you to 1 bar. I'm not comfortable stating a -dBm range because I can't remember what I observed and I didn't write it down. If you already have 1 or 2 bars (again, on the "old" signal indicator) you really don't see a boost given to the radios. By "boost", I mean you can click on the battery graph and see where signal strength went up and battery consumption did too, while your phone sat in the same place. I have a screen shot of this that I will try to find, and update this post with.
Looking at your screen shots, I don't see that affect. In general terms, your battery life looks "fine" "normal", whatever we want to call it. Bear in mind that our LTE GNex's don't get the same life as our GSM counterparts.

Found the screen shot I was talking about. This was on stock 4.0.2 in my hotel room one night in a rural area. The night before I had data/sync on and noticed that when I woke up my battery was about dead. I knew it was due to signal strength since I was used to losing about 8% over night. So the following night I turned off data/sync and let it run over night, not wasting the opportunity to watch what would happen to battery life with and extra boost to the radio to get improved signal strength along with removing app/data activity from the battery consumption mix by keeping data/sync off. If I remember correctly, I went to bed @ 100% and woke up 7 hours 44 minutes later with something like 72% battery. Not only did the phone boost the power to the cellular antenna, but this activity also kept the phone from sleeping properly. I'm GLAD smart phone's can do this, but at a minimum, it turned a roughly 8% battery drain over X period of time into a 28% battery drain.
I hope my info/experiences haven't confused things further for you.

So what have others found about CDMA battery life?? Mine is poor no matter what ROM or Kernel I seem to try to run. I also have attempted under voltages in SetCPU to see if that helps. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Peace.

You need to define "poor". Everyone's use is different as are their apps. If you truly have poor battery life no matter what, look at the three things that are always probably the same. 1) Your physical battery. Is it defective? 2) The apps you use. Perhaps you have an app that is acting up and syncing like crazy or wasting CPU cycles. 3) The area you live in. Do you have poor signal strength?
The biggest drain on your battery is ALWAYS going to be your screen, and data/sync. In my personal use, my biggest drain is: Screen Brightness 100%, Netflix running, Audio 100% through the speaker. This equals about 30% per hour with the Verizon Extended Battery depending on what all else syncs in the background...with a live wallpaper.
Undervolting is a misleading thing. People will disagree with me, but when you look at power consumption tables, undervolting does very little. When our phones display battery % remaining, it's not based on the actual juice left in the battery. It's a calculation based on charts that the phone manufacturer (probably Google in our case) took from the hardware manufacturer and put into play that basically says that at this Processor Speed (X), this Level of Power Consumption Occurred (Y). It happened for this Amount of Time (Z) and then it compiles that data and solves for an amount of power used giving us a percentage of remaining battery life. In general, this is VERY accurate. However, there are no values programed in to account for undervolting...or OVER clocking for that matter. For example, if you're overclocked to 1350MHz, then Android is going to use the values for 1200MHz. If you put a timer on your battery life, you'll see a longer run if you run your phone until it shuts itself off. But it's not THAT big of a difference. All the while when your watching how quickly your battery bar drops with your use, you can't see a a measurable difference.
In my experience with undervolting, doing so got me maybe an extra 5% boost in battery life. I can't equate that to a time because again, usage is different. In general, a 5% swing in a charge cycle can be easily accounted for by other things. Does your processor use more juice @ 1200MHz with normal volting compared to 1200MHz undervolted? Absolutely, but undervolting isn't going to get someone hours of extra battery life, especially when our screens usually account for 60%+ of our battery consumption. All said and done, undervolting results in gaining us very few percentage points in terms of what percentage of battery life our processors consumed.
Seems like the kernel and rom do make some difference not just apps. I use AutoStarts to prevent a mess of them starting upon boot. I am sure the screen takes a ton of it. But I am convinced that it depends on voltages and kernels too. Since I notice differences.

Ok KWK, but there's a trade off here. If I try the 4.0.2 radios, that some people reported bad battery life on, it's just because it had a bad trade off for SOME
people right? So that means 4.0.2 radios could be good for me and result in better battery? Can I be on 4.0.4 and have the 4.0.2 radios?

As for the battery life part of my post, what do you guys think I should try doing in betterbatterystats? A recent thread on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483829&page=3 (Go to page 3 and last post) He got his life fixed. So that's nice to know there's tweaks that can be done. I disagee with your comment about old 4.0.2 radios since 4.0.4 (FA02) radios have improved signal reception. It is possible that maybe it affects battery, but I kind of doubt it. Based on all the research so far, seems mostly screen eats it a lot as well as how you use all the apps on the phone as mentioned above. I mean isnt this a matter of some electrical engineering info (ie voltages etc) and how to tweak such things? I have CS degree but admit my hardware knowledge is not greatest.
Ugh, I'm in a mess now, lol. I called Verizon yesterday and followed their usual "signal solution" got me to 4 bars of 4g. Turned on WiFi - 2 bars, turned it off, back to 1-2 bar 4g that last for 30 seconds.
I'm starting to think it's the sim card.
Any suggestions for battery life? Seems my phone can't sleep. It's down to 83% after 5 hours. And all I've done is send 2-3 text messages. Do I turn off NFC for a start?
edit: Now I'm at 4 bars wifi. Goddam radios, they are so random, we'll assume the phone is trolling and continue to the solution.

If your phone is searching for signal, then your battery life is already sucking it up. A "stronger" radio that uses a little more juice won't cause more drain than your phone will cause by throwing everything it can at the phone antenna. Just look at my screen shot from before...28% battery drained in 8 hours...an additional 20% due to the phone trying to keep a signal.
Like I said about your original screen shots, your battery life doesn't seem to be that "off to me". Just push different radios, and try them for at least a day.

Lastly, anyone here an expert on fixing phone isn't sleeping? Seems to be my major idle battery drain.

If you have the 4.0.2 radios, you can flash that ZIP in Clockwork Recovery Mod.
It will take a few minutes so leave it be and don't do a battery pull.

edit: after looking at that link you provided, are those even radios only? Seems like a bootloader & radio update from 4.0.2 -> 4.0.4. And I'm already on 4.0.4. But with horrid signal.
I have had the best results with the 4.0.4 radios but you mention you are already on them.
You can try flashing some older radios but I am not sure that will help your signal issues.
As far as finding out why you are having deep sleep issues, you can use Better Battery Stats to narrow down wakelocks.
With that said, if the phone is constantly in an area with poor signal, that will cause unnecessary battery drain as well.
Where can I find these older radios?
edit: I'd like to try the 4.0.2 radio.
Update 1: So today I powered it on after having it off from 7:00 AM to 2:45 PM. It's been idle, checked email for replies on this post and this is my battery:
Something is eating up it's idle time.
I noticed on the way back to my House it picked up a strong 4G signal for 5 minutes or so. Still looking to find where the 4.0.2 radios are. Noticing a stronger WiFi signal though, and the usual 4bar 3g. All I can find is the post from adranalyne about the radios from 4.0.2 -> 4.0.4. Something I was thinking about: If I flash 4.0.2 radios, say they are bad and I need to go back to 4.0.4 would that require a whole new flash of 4.0.4 or are there seperate radios?

I too have an LTE Galaxy Nexus and have been switching from franco's and lean kernel in an attempt to gain battery life. I have a feeling you're not going to get much better battery life with LTE turned on. I've turned off sync and LTE overnight and the best I've gotten in deep sleep is about 1-1.5% an hour. That's all after hunting down all my unnecessary wakelocks and shutting them down (GTALK_asnyc, etc) and keeping my running programs to a minimum (email, lightflow, and weather1 are the only ones ever running besides stock apps with sync on weather1 on a 6 hour cycle)
All of the two day battery life posts I've seen all seem to be GSM phones, and typically I've been getting a full day pretty comfortably...
8 hours while sleeping + 8-13 hours of light to moderate usage (1-3 hours of screen time generally)..all with about 10-25% remaining at the end of my long days
That's excellent. But one problems: (1) I can't even get a 4g signal, at most for 5 minutes in an area that I regularly get it. I have a thunderbolt next to me running 3-4 bars. I know the GNex has a bad radio, but sheesh I atleast want to have SOME 4g.
Been trying to find a radio, can't find one though, if you can link one that'd be appreciated.
Anything you see there in betterybatterystats I should shut down, and do they start backup after boot? I see the GTALK thing you were talking about on mines too, how do I get rid of it?
