Auto Disconnect GPRS - P3300, MDA Compact III General

I've read on this forum about their handsets auto connecting to GPRS but not disconnecting.
From reading on this forum and other sites I have managed to find out the required registry changes required.
This exported part of the registry is below for anyone who needs their GPRS connection to terminate after a period with no activity.

Is there a method of importing the gprs.reg directly or do you have to make the adjustments manually ?? I use PHM Regedit. What is the default idle time using this key..??
Thanks in advance.........

I would have thought that if the file was in a folder on your PDA then as in windows it would import automatically after prompting.
If this is not the case it can be done manually.
The idle time set in the reg file is 10 seconds, this can be altered to be what you wish in seconds by changing the cache time dword value

Works Great!!
I used PHM Regedit to change SuspendResume to the value in the file and it works like a dream!!! Didn't need to change anything else. Also changed the timeout to 300.
Thank you
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings]SuspendResume"="GPRS_bye_if_device_off"

There is a nice .cpl file out there that disconnects after a time you specify. Very nice tool and freeware. I think it's from GB-Soft.

SUPER !!!
good job!
Thanks

I've looked at the file, but I'm still not sure which is the timeout key and what is the value for 60 sec.
Please post it.

it's the cache time dword thats needs changing

Thanks !
Works great actually.
P.S.
It turns out that the cache time dword is irrelevant (i.e. does not work).
The GPRS disconnects always about 10 seconds after the last packet no matter the cache time value.
And ... YES ... I've done soft reset each time I change the value.

works great!
Thanks!

WM6 Word Suggestion Fix

Hi,
I see that currently leaked WM6 versions have problem with word suggestion checkbox in Start / Settings. You have to uncheck word suggestion on every soft reset. WM6 forget this setting.
This little fix should cure this
Install:
Copy wsuggfix.cab to Universal and uncheck word suggestion.
Try soft reset. Windows should remember your setting.
How does it work?
-------------------
The fix consists of two files:
wsgfix.dll
sippoll.exe
wsgfix.dll is a service dll. After installing cab wsgfix.dll creates a hidden window, and requests notifications about
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip, SuggWords value changes.
When Suggwords changes wsgfix copy this value to its own registry key.
sippoll.exe is only started on system startup. sippoll reads Suggwords and disables word suggestion if disabled and copy Suggwords back to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip, SuggWords. That's all. sippoll doesn't occupy precious program memory
SuggWords fix...
I have discovered another way to fix this and even chang it to the number of words you want -of course reasonable.
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CompIME
...change the "SuggWords" DWORD to the value tht reflects number of words suggested. I use 8, quite okay though.
I thought the same about SIP string but it is very stubborn!
Thanks, it's good to know that.
But If I use this method, I have to edit registry after modifying settings in Control Panel. Or I have to completly leave Control Panel's Word completion tab, and only change registry. And Control Panel applet's tab become unused.
I know it's not a big thing, but I don't like this
thank you for this fix. Works great!

Yes, the same here.
The fix worked fine for the first couple of days, after that it suddenly stopped working. When I check the suggesting words box (so enabled!) the suggesting words stops again.
When I then uncheck it again, it stays disabled after a soft reset, but it will start suggesting some time later again.....
I'd sure like to see some sort of true 'final' of Windows Mobile 6.0 for the Universal, only containing three fixes:
1. No more word suggesting trouble - disabling means disabling, enabling means enabling.
2. Windows Live Messenger uses only Wi-Fi when connected to a Wi-Fi network and only uses GPRS/3G when not connected to Wi-Fi network.
3. Ofcourse: full 3G video call support.

Hi,
Don't know but do you use tools like SK Tools or PocketMechanic?
Sometimes they clean the registry to deep.

hi i'm new here. i have tried your solution with no luck. please help me!
Thanks for the registry keys!! I added them to the wizard wiki, someone else can change it around I guess...
Does anyone know how to stop WM6 from auto-capping the first letter in a new sentence automatically? I just don't want it to do this anymore, and the Settings > Input checkbox isn't helping... so where in the registry is it?
Please no more CAB files, I like to know where in the registry it is for knowledge reasons
Fix with MortScript
There are another solution (simply - maybe stoopid) to fix this Word Suggestion bug - with MortScript.
When you have MortScript installed simply create text file named SuggWords_Off.mscr with this code:
Code:
RegWriteDWord( "HKCU", "ControlPanel\Sip", "SuggWords", "0" )
and put this file into \Windows\StartUp .

Just how does QuickGPS work

Hello and thanks in advance for any answers to my questions on QuickGPS.
I have an XDA-Orbit and am running it on Vodafone, not O2. I am also running TomTom 6.x. I find that my GPS acquisition times are not as good as people are reporting. Best case it takes about a minute or so... and worst case, longer than 15 min.
I keep my quickgps files up to date, but just what are in these files? I gather that it gets my approximate location based on which cell tower I am connected to, and then gets satellite positioning info. However, do all cell towers broadcast their location, etc. For example, is using QuickGPS with a vodafone SIM useless because it is looking for an O2 cell tower?
Also, does tomtom make use of quickgps? In my tomtom settings, the option to use quickgpsfix is greyed out. Should I be using quickgpsfix instead of quickgps, or is it basically the same thing.
Thanks again!
N.
Have a look in your windows folder and check out the file size of 'packedephemeris.ee' it should be around 50k. If it's not then as I understand it it's not updating properly. I have a mda compact iii and the default settings give me a file size of about 8k, if I use this TomTom takes about 4-5 mins to get a fix.
After following the instructions in the 'update quickGPS manually' thread and replacing the file I'm getting a fix in about 20 seconds.
However the registry fix doesn't seem to be working at the moment but you can do it manually.
Thanks for the response. I just checked the size of the file in windows and it was 47.7k, updated yesterday. One thing that may be causing this is that I travel quite a lot and often times the last known position of the gps is totally different than where I am when I start up the app. Maybe this is causing the problem.
Just use this file for update. Download it and copy it to your windows folder.
http://service.mio-tech.com/eeservice/packedephemeris.ee
Thanks for the response. How often should I update this file? Daily?
If you update it manually it updates the 'download' and 'valid time' in the quickGPS app so if you have the 'remind me when data expires' I'm guessing it should let you know when you next need to do it.
A slightly better solution :
Replace the following ip's in the register:
Use resco reg edit or any other register editor.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\QuickGPS\0\0\IP -> htctsvr.htc.com.tw
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\QuickGPS\0\1\IP -> htctsvr.htc.com.tw
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\QuickGPS\1\0\IP -> htctsvr.htc.com.tw
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\QuickGPS\2\0\IP -> htctsvr.htc.com.tw
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\QuickGPS\2\1\IP -> htctsvr.htc.com.tw
Here you go. now just use quickGPS to download the location file.
Just for reference, I did manage to download the file, and replace the existing one. The GPS signal picked up within 15 seconds! This is a huge difference from before.
One thing though... if I update through the quickgps program, my file is indeed about 50k in size, but obviously does not do much or does not contain valid data.
I wonder if the data provided is carrier specific.. Ie, an XDA gets data that will not work on a different carrier than O2.

The ip servers i posted should work. the have been working for over a week now for me. The thing is, if you adjust the ip adresses in the register you have to do a soft reset to make sure the register keeps the setting. if you check your register now you'll see that the default values are back.
How i got them? easy, google on the file P...ee and look for url's with this structure : http://SITENAME/clm/p..ee

Thanks for this fix. I've now got a 47k packedephemeris file, so that's better than it was. But should I have a QuickGPS option in TomTom? I'm on 6.020 but I can't see any such option...
thanks for this, worked a treat, I was having the sat fix time issues and looking at the packed ephomeris file it was only 3.7k,
I thought the reason that it was taking so long is that I always update it at home but I never turn it one when I depart, most time at a completley different location.
Hi all
First post here.
I know I am resurrecting an old thread... I found it while googling for a fix for my inoperative quickGPS on my MDA Compact III.
This has failed to connect for some weeks now and it definitely affects lock-on speeds.
Red Baron's solution above works for me - i.e. download the file and manually put it in the Windows folder on the device - but it is a bit of a chore.
So I then tried Bonkey's solution and edited the IP addresses as shown - but this doesn't work sadly.
Should I be putting a www in front of the addresses listed?
Or has there been some change to the addresses?
It's a bit of a crappy piece of software, very difficult to find out if any updates or changes are required.
I'm very glad of RedBaron's solution, it is so far the only one on the net that I can find that works!
Thanks for any advice you can give.

can wifi be always on ?

i'm using wm6 bepe 0.76 with radio 1.46
i was just wondering if there is a way to keep the wifi connection always on (mainly to keep skype always connected)
is it possible guys ?
Sure but it eats you power, and borthers you when new AP are detected... if you can live with this no prob...
Personally I switch it off when I go out and switch it on when I arrive at home or office...

You can change your power settings to never let your device go automatically into standby mode which would allow the wifi to stay connected. I wouldn't recommend this unless you have it plugged into the power supply because the battery won't last the whole day with wifi always activated.

thanks so much !
searching for the prog right NOW !
A little late but someone maybe finds it usefull, no need for programs, all you have to do is this:
The solution to have "always on" wi-fi, is applying three registry hacks. Please note that you must apply all three registry edits and soft reset your device before this takes effect. If you're looking for a free and reliable registry editor for your Windows Mobile device, you can take a look at the PHM Registry Editor.
The necessary registry edits are:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Suspend\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006} - change to 1
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\State\Resuming\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006} change to 1
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\State\Unattended\{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006} change to 1
Now the wi-fi connection will stay on even while your device is suspended. Remember that you'll have to re-enable the wi-fi connection if you soft-reset your device, though.
Tested and it works!

Update time via cell phone towers

I was reading this guy's page (http://hackaddict.blogspot.com/2007/06/tutorial-iphone-windows-mobile-skin.html)
when I came across him mentioning that via a registry setting you can keep your phone's time correct automatically via cell phone tower info.
"Open PHM Registry Editor
Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\Phone Setting
Change the "ShowTimeZone" value from 0 to 1
Now navigate to Settings\Phone\Time Zones tab. Check the "Automatic change time zone and clock." box. Your phone will now automatically set the time for you."
Is this true, and if so how exactly do I do this, because I don't get the check box on my P3300 that he's talking about.
Any clues?
Chech it again...

I have found that this works accross europe but not in the uk. (T-mobile anyway) when i go to europe the time zone is updated but on arrival back in uk i have to reset it manually
PS I also have a vodafone sim so i will try it this week and post findings
Thanks, I've tried to set this but don't get the extra tab. The setting is definitely changed correctly in the registry, but when I go to the phone settings (WM6.1) the only tabs I see are:
1)Phone
2)Security
3)Services
4)Network
5)PIN
6)More
I don't see a time zone tab, even if I scroll full right. Are you sure it's in the start\settings\phone area?

Install RegistryEditor v 1.2.0.0 from TouchExperience website and follow first post.(I'm using HD7 sorry)Hope it works for you.
Hey man, *PLEASE* don't post the same question in many different threads. You've been here long enough to know better than that...
As for the answer, well, you run a registry editor app, you navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings (watch for forum-added spaces in the string; the only space should be between "Internet" and "Settings"), tap on the named registry values, and set them...
If the ROM you are using is configured to automaticlaly revert them to some other value, for whatever reason, you need to modify or replace the ROM. There are only a few registry values I've found that have checks like that, though.
For the curious, the default values on my stock HD7 are 6 for both items.
thanks worked
EDIT: dont work.. still shows a "H" in my screen!
and yes I did a reboot but it dont work..
That... I can't help you with. I see no particular reason to believe that the registry values in question actually control which cellular technology is used by the phone. In fact, that seems a bit unlikely. I've been wrong about unlikely registry values before though...
In any case, I'm pretty sure it is possible (maybe using Field Test?) to lock out certain wireless technologies, but I haven't done any research on it. The only way I know is the basic option under Settings -> Cellular, and that disables all 3.xG tech.
u need the custom rom intrinsic, other roms may not work
i have been using this tweak for many hours now. my phone does not go to H signal during web surfing.even after soft reset, reboot. So it is working on mine
before this, phone will go to H signal meaning its using HSPA when doing things like surfing, email sync ect.. and will only stay on 3G during rest

i see something called registrypersist in the intrinsic rom. maybe thats why it works
hmm i got a trophy with a full unlock.
but btw, ill leave it on 32 and 16 to see if my 3g iddle mode stays at 3G instead of H
i am not sure why or how this works
but my theory is this , imagine
3G - uses xxx power at a certain speed
hspa - uses higher xxx power for faster speed
u have 6 pipes , u need to pull 20 stuff into these pipes, 6 at a time to destination (phone)
in order to do all of it in a given time, u need to pull the 20 stuff at a higher speed (hspa) which uses more power but faster to get to the destination ( phone). the phone recognises this and automatically goes into HSPA mode ( high power but faster operation)
so to solve the problem u open another 14 more pipes, that is ( 6+14-20 pipes) but get the 20 stuff with the power requirement of 3G all at the same time but at the same speed, u get all the 20 stuff at the given xx time by opening up more pipes parallel to the original 6 u already have
this is why maybe the phone stays on 3G because it has more pipes
So if anything, it changes the amount of power used by HSPA, not the actual technology used.
From my understanding, those registry values are similar to the ones within Windows which control max connections to servers.. By changing it to a lower value you're in reality only limiting your speed.
And am I the only person who thinks Magpir posts nothing but garbage?

it should automatically default to 3G when idle even without the tweak
what this tweak does is limit it to 3G under all circumstances.

amount of power means lower power = battery life savings.
