how to dial into my home broadband. - HTC Excalibur

I have a laptop at home on comcast broad band. I also have a phoneline going into the laptop. I've already configured vista dial in server on the laptop. I cannot make my unlocked dash to use the dialup feature to dial. I know im supposed to setup the DUN feature then launch explorer but when i do that it doesnt dial out.
If i can achieve this, will ATT charge me for the data im using?
I know i havent given all the details of my setup, please ask away.

No, all you have to do is plug your phone into your computer through usb and bam... you will have the internet on your phone too...

Thanks but thats not what im trying to do. WHat im trying to do is to dial into my broadband when im AWAY from home. Obviously if i want to surf from home i can use my pc, use my wifi on my dash or do what u described.

dont all answer at once! does anyone have a clue how to do this

When you say dial-in, are you trying to access services on your pc? Of you're trying to use your PC as a radius server all you're going to get is 9.6kbps, way slower than edge.

i dont know what a radius server is. Im trying to just dial-in to my pc to use the broadband internet. If i use edge it will cost me. dont want to use edge

it doesnt work that way.

A radius server is what authenticates when you dial in via dial-up. If you dial in via dial up, edge or wifi, you're going to be limited by the bandwidth of the connection you're using to connect to your broadband from. If you're connected at dial-up (9.6kbps) all you're going to get is 9.6Kbps regardless of what you're connecting to. If you used edge all you would get is about 200kbps. If you used wi-fi you'd be limited by the aomount of bandwidth provided by the ISP. Wi-Fi is the way to go but any other connections aren't going to give you broadband speed when the total throughput for each of the methods aside from wi-fi are way lower.
The pipe has to be big at both ends for this to work, if the pipe is smaller on one end then all traffic will be sent out at the smaller pipes bandwidth.

ahh very well explained. It can be done by setting up a radius server but the through put will be like waiting for brittany spears to stop drinking?

Orbit as modem for Laptop on hols?

Peoples,
I would like to set up my Orbit to work as a modem for my Laptop whilst on holidays ie use it to connect to the internet etc
Question is how can I do same, and the best method given that my laptop has bluetooth and wifi (or direct cable connection?)?
Many thanks
I assume you're on O2 and don't mind paying for GPRS roaming while aboard, which I assume your holiday is also aboard.
You can follow the below link from O2 (setup for windows) which tells you what username/passowrd, phone number and ips you need to put in the settings.
http://www.o2.co.uk/assets/O2HybridNav/Static-files/PDFs/Windows manual set up instructions.pdf
as far as the installing the modem goes, turn on bluetooth, discoverable, and your PC should see your phone in the bluetooth browser and you should be able to add it as a modem.
Thanks for the reply humps
...will try here (UK) first, but back in Australia will use a local SIM for data and calls....cheers
It's not that hard..
You simply need to pair up your orbit with the lappy... the blootooth should detect and install various components (modem etc)... but the one you need to use is Bluetooth LAN. On the orbit, go to intenet sharing, make the pc conenction Bluetooth PAN, and hit conenct - I've not tried it on USB, as the bluetooth is perfect...
Then, just double-click the bluetooth LAN connection on the laptop, and it should piggyback on the back of the orbit's GPRS connection.
USB is easy, start Internet Sharing in the Programs menu, tell it what connection settings to use, select USB, then touch connect. Plug the cable into the laptop and your done.

Except it runs the battery down very quickly. USB will charge the battery whilst you browse.... But other than that it is fine.
i was wondering is it possible to share ppc's wifi connection through usb to a lappy without wifi capability?

Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1315142&postcount=2
It might or might not work though!
This really gets me in the UK... I have hundreds of mins free calls yet get charged sill money for going on line GPRS.... When away its cheeper to plug into a phone line and go on dial up and the same speed.... why hasnt someone come up with a way of using the phone as a 'modem' old skool style. that way i could use the phone call mins and pay for the on line time rather than kbs
Interesting thought GPRS v GSM
Have you tried settings..connections, add a new connection and just specify 'Cellular Line' arather than GPRS...
You'll need an ISP with a dialup number, but it would count as a standard call.
Problem, of course, is that most ISP dialups are 0845 numbers which won't come out of your call allowance, but if you could find one with say an 020 number, you may be getting somewhere (line spped would be v slow, but it would be good enough to download mails and then read them offline)

How can I share my 3G with wifi?

Can some one tell me how to share my 3G connection over wifi? I need to make the phone as a portable access point.
no can do.
Bluetooth or USB
Try hitchhiker it's free! but I'm not sure if it works for sharing using 3G... try it and let me know http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/
No, It doesn't support to share the 3G connection.
So use Internet sharing over BT ?
Would like to use it as a wireless access point, so I can get access from computer and iPhone, seem like I have hard time to find a solution.
share the connection with the PC by USB. Put a wifi stick/pcicard in the PC and bridge the connections, then the iFoon can have 3G too

you got this to work?
or are you saying it should work?
i have tried to share a connection this way but have had no luck when using internet connection sharing/pan.
i did get it to work this way back in the day when the phone ran wm5 and had dun.
do you have any pointers on how to get internet connection sharing in wm6 to let more than one device connect to the 3g connection?

seems like you may need an app on your pc to manage/route the connections not sure if this helps but you can try "network Magic" it give you a bit more options on the pc side for managing connections. would like to see where this goes for possible future applications. i'll give it a try when i have some free time and check with an comp tek friend of mine see what he thinks.
Yeah it sucks that no one has created a way to share the wifi connection just like we share bluetooth or usb.
We also need a proxy server that we can run on our phone.
ok, for me the boring part is the time of the connection, you can share via wifi by just turning on your internet sharing in whatever the pc connection, you just need to manually deffine your hermes wifi to 192.168.0.1 and it shares via internet sharing! The question here is that the connections stops after 10 minutes becouse of the warnig "check usb cable connection". Its very irritating to have to start connection every 10 min. !!!!!
awww...iPhones not fast enough Data-Wise for ya?
thought it was supposed to "revolutionize PDA Phones"
hah.
sorry, i had to add my 2ยข against Apple.
Beware, some mobile provider allready use NAT, thus you'll recieve a non-routable IP. I am not sure that you will be able to share a connection of this kind.

Question - Can you tether a Wifi connection from your Phone to your PC

Hello, I have been searching around for a day and a half now to no avail. I figure I will ask here as a last attempt before I go and buy another USB wifi adapter.
I am trying to use my HTC Dash with WM6.5 to tether an available wifi connection over to my Windows 7 PC. Basically trying to use the phone as a wifi adapter. The phone has no cell data service, but can connect to the home wifi network that is here. My Windows 7 PC has no Wifi adapter (I left it behind >.<).
Here is where I am at. The HTC Dash is connected to the Wifi network, and when I try to select a Network in the ICS program, it says there is none available. I have been able to get USB selected in ICS, and the phone connected to the computer. In Windows I see a Windows Mobile Remote Adapter in the Network Connections area when I sync the device in Windows Mobile Center. But no matter what I try, ICS sharing on the phone will not let me select the Wifi connection it has.
Through my searching I have found a lot of information on tethering 2G and 3G internet through USB, and using the phone as a Wifi Hotspot. But those where no help in this.
My friend on a G1 with Andriod can tether Wifi connections to a pc, and I am wondering if Windows Mobile can do the same thing. I can flash my ROM from to 6.0 or 6.1 WM if needed.
Thanks in advance to any advice given, hopefully someone can help me out
UPDATE: Still have no luck. I found a program called ICS Control v.21, but it only works on touchscreen WM phones, not WM standard. Which means a bunch of crashing.
This program would do exactally what I need it to do... just does not support my phone. Well the search continues... looking like I may just have to go buy an USB Wifi adapter soon.
tethering w/wifi
It does work. I'm currently answering this on my 2nd desktop Vista with my S620 via my home wifi network. Waiting for a 25' ethernet connector to hardware to wifi/modem Not quite sure how it is with a wifi adapter but 2 things I do know from experience. You shouldn't need an adapter.
1st: you can't be in Sync Center while trying to tether, at least in my case on a Vista desktop. It won't let you tether while the sync is running (or your already synced).
2nd: (this worked for me) open internet sharing on your Dash/S620, pc connection-usb and be ready to hit connect the 1st couple of seconds after pluging your usb connector into your phone, and give it 10-20 seconds to actually connect. If you wait to long to hit connect, the phone will start syncing with the computer. Won't let you tether.
RE-read post, missed thar "WinMo" remote part. My bad. Don't own Win 7. Don't know what that is.
Question: Is there an active wifi where you are ? From your post it sounds like "yes"
You do not need a wifi adapter. You do need a USB cord.
I tethered with edge for a bit, but then got to thinking. Try Wifi. It worked, but be quick.
Neither one is super fast but Wifi is definitely faster than Edge. Better than not being on the net at all. Occasionally it'll cut out, just unplug usb, get to connect screen, plug in and hit connect. Should be set.
As a side note: I also tried tethering with G1. Xferd pc driver to Vista from G1 but computer says it can't find the driver. Gave up after 2 hours.
G1 tethering works great on XP though.
Hope this helps. Good Luck. Really cool when it works.
Are you using a wifi tether or just usb?
If wifi, what program/version are you using and where did you get it? I got the ICS usb tether working, but my version of wmwifirouter.cab won't even install on the dash. cheers

I'll have to break out the Dash again and let you know. It's been sitting for weeks since I repaired LCD screen and flashed my TMO Wing. Can't seem to stop playing with it.
Give me a little time and I'll get back to you.
You do have a wifi modem, correct ? I was using usb.
Right, just to be clear, my goal is to set up my Dash to receive it's edge data and transmit that out as a wifi signal that my laptop will pick up and connect to the internet. No USB connection. I'm getting an ipad eventually and this is all to avoid that stupid 3g garbage they're hawking.
I tried a program called wmwifirouter.cab but was unsuccessful. An ad-hoc wifi network was created by my phone and my laptop was connected to it but couldn't connect to the internet. And my phone kept crashing.
Any ideas? Thanks

Well, in your case, I won't be any help. What I did was run a 2nd computer off of my Dash with a Wifi Modem.
XP in another room with a wifi modem attached on Comcast, Dash on wifi and usb to Vista computer, since I didn't have a 25ft ethernet cable at the time.
Was running Vista-Dash-wifi modem-XP to comcast so I could run 2nd computer without being hard wired.
I'm familiar with wifirouter cab. It let's you use your phone like a hotspot, correct ?
In all my searches for various things for the phones, I thought I saw a different application that did the same thing. Possibly might even have it. I'll check and upload for ya if I find it. Have hundreds of cabs/zips to search. Let you know.
Possibly google it and you might find it yourself. There's a program called: WalkingHotSpot online for $24.99 if you don't mind spending. Dash isn't listed as a supported windows device but looking at the other phones listed my guess would be it should work. Try their DEMO version, see if it works.
Good Luck.......
2AM and I was just wondering......When you received your phone, you also got a usb cable with it, right ?
Why don't you just usb Dash to laptop and use "internet sharing" ????
My plan is to set this up for an iPad, which doesn't allow internet access over a USB cable, so USB tethering is out, has to be wifi.

Do you have a home computer ? If so, get yourself a Wifi Modem and set up a home network. $40-60. Although Comcast sold me mine for $20 and I get to keep it. I can get all 5 phones on the internet at the same time, not that I need to. It'll also be so much faster then running thru Edge. Besides the fact video's don't play for crap tethered running through Edge. Just a suggestion.
My opinion stands concerning Apple. Get ready to cough up more fees for internet (ATT). They're doing away with unlimited data. Did you see their prices ?
You'll never catch me with ATT.
I just put WMWifiRouter on my TMO Wing 6.5. let you know how it worked. Setup went fine, so far.
did you try downloading the actual .cab from WMWIFIROUTER.COM it's only a trial for 21 days, the "Free" versions don't work on the dash i've tried many of them.
once you install and get it set up be sure to write down the Access ID and Password it gives you so you can connect to the WiFi signal beaming from your phone from your PC. It works for me to tether a WiFi connection from my Dash to PC though I prefer the more stable Internet Sharing USB to PC and I have an Unlimited Data Plan.
WMWIFIROUTER also lets you tether a connection from your phone via bbluetooth.
I use WMWiFiRouter and its a life saver. It lets you pretty much tether any connection to any other.
Just yesterday I was at a meeting in a resturant with some clients and used it to hook my netbook to the internet and used bluetooth as the connection to the phone. Yes, Internet Sharing can do that, but it has alot more it can do too.
You can use Bluetooth, USB (it shows up as a USB modem), or even set it up as a WiFi Router.
Very cool program and it works perfectly on the Dash. I love it.
I never tried the trial version. A friend of mine showed it to me, so I just bought it. It's under $20. Well worth it if you run into that situation often.

How to tether your phone to PS3/Xbox/Wii etc.

Hello! after posting about tethering to my PS3 and getting no replies I kept messing around and figured out a great and reliable way. I'll be explaining how to do so for anyone who's curious.
Things you'll Need:
-Android Phone
-Computer or Laptop (this guide is only for PC because i don't know Macs)
-1 ethernet cord
-A Router
-PDAnet, or any USB Tethering app. PDAnet is what i used for this
Setting up Process.
-First, enable USB Debugging on your phone.
-Download PDAnet here
-Follow all of the install instructions, it will ask you to install it on your phone, click yes and it will doit for you.
-Once it is completely installed on your phone and PC, it'll ask to run. before you click yes, disable your current incoming connection, then click yes.
-Click "turn on PDAnet" on your phone and windows will automatically connect to your phones 3g/4g. your laptop/desktop is now tethered.
-Open network and sharing center (windows 7). Click Change Adapter Settings, right click on PDANetbroadband connection. Goto Properties.
-Click on the "Sharing" Tab.
-Click the check box that says "allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection"
in the drop down menu click Local Area Connection.
You're now ready to hook up your router.
-Take an ethernet cord (preferably the one that came with it) and hook one end up into your desktop/laptop.
-Hook the other end into the internet port of the router. (it's generally the port that a regular modem would hook into if you were setting up a router)
-Turn on your router and youre good to go
your router is now making wifi from your laptop that's getting it's internet source from your phone.
Nice little guide m8. How is the gaming experience using 3g? I have never attempted to try this and would expect it would be frustrating to play online on a 3g connection.
Actually I played fine on 1mbps back (had to block everyone off though so it won't lag) when I had that type of Internet, but I use 20mbps now gaming has never been the same.
Since its about ps3 add me psn: N33DL3S9325
works fine for me. ive played league of legends and skyped at the same time with no issues.
and battlefield 3 with no issues so far
and will do man, i'm jehc92
I routinely get at least 20MB/sec down and 10MB/sec on Verizon 4G with my GNex. In fact, it's even better than the AT&T high-speed internet I spend a small fortune on every month.

why not get down for some Verizon internet? Let them rape you all da way! Why share some of that love with AT&T? I also enjoy blazing fast 4G... But alas it is capped at around 4 Gigs... what a rip off..
just to add if anyone wants to try this, it may take a few minutes to start working for some reason. i was telling my friend how to do this, (cause hes getting raped by at&t internet and has unlimited data) and his 3ds/ps3 wouldn't connect for about 10minutes then it started working.
Jehc For those having issues trying to update their xbox360 via tether . I was getting errors while trying to update due to the low MTU the work around is to download the updates to a pc then transfer via usb . Follow the instruction in the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933498 .
I have windows 8 and in my sharing tab I don't have am option for Local Area Connection

S4 tethering to a Draytek router

Anyone know how I can attach a Galaxy S4 mini to a Draytek 2820n router?
I'll give a bit of background that might explain why I'm trying to do what I'm doing.
I'm a heavy internet user. I need to download medical image files that are 300MB at a time on a frequent basis, as well as wanting to do usual downloading from iPlayer, Sky etc, plus app updates and all the usual keeping computers up to date. I live somewhere that I cannot get a decent ADSL connection (download speed is about 256Kb/s) never mind fibre. However, do have a good 3G (HSDPA) connection with three.co.uk. Have a Draytek 2820n router so I can use a 3G dongle via the router's USB so in essence the whole house has a fairly rapid internet connection. Only problem is that three's mobile broadband plans limit you to 15GB cap per month.
I've got a Galaxy S4 mini on monthly contract which gives unlimited (All You Can Eat) data and allows tethering.
I've been able to successfully connect wifi devices to the S4 via wifi tethering and use the internet but it's a pain having to switch wifi connections if say I want to control an XBMC server on my LAN, for instance. What would be ideal is to have the router distribute the S4's internet around. I can't just put the SIM in a mobile dongle as three have a way of blocking that (something to do with IMEI recognition) and I don't want to risk trying it.
Anyone got any ideas how I might be able to go about this. The Draytek router has various settings you can put into the 3G setup - I've attached a screenshot. I've tried various things but nothing works and I'm not sure how to access the router's debugging output. I set the S4 with USB debugging on in the developer settings. Wondering if there is something I can do that is fairly straightforward on the S4 so that I can try some generic dial string settings on the router to see if that works. I'd read something about putting the S4 into USB Kies mode but I don't seem to have that option.
My other thought was I might be able to leave the S4 in wifi tethering mode and somehow bridge this with my router but that would probably screw up my LAN DHCP assignments as I'd have to switch the router DHCP off and then I would be limited to 10 connections.
Sorry it's a bit long and complex. Any thoughts anyone?
