had started this service out to TYTN users and figured i should spread the news around to some of the other boards. if you guys are looking for push email, please get in touch here's what i posted in the tytn forum:
I'm now offering exchange mailboxes to users (subscription based service). right now i see two, one by austindkelly in the wizard forum (he's disappeared for over a month and looks like he doens't offer his service any more) and one by denial in the kaiser section ($5/month). I thought I'd offer up a similar service starting with the hermes group (cheaper of course) with a few extra tidbits of joy...
- supports iphone exchange services, saves a heck of money over apple's mobileme service!
- outlook web access (with the advanced interface)
- 1gb quota
- both SSL as well as standard port options
- *IMAP access* - you don't even need outlook, syncs flawlessly with your phone.
- *MAPI* outlook access - hook up your outlook on your PC to sync with my service which in turn syncs with your phone. no plugging in ever needed!
- alias included (get your own email)
- changing your password through outlook web access (one-way non-reversible encryption).
I figured it's a bit of an overkill having my own exchange server that's serving a single account (i.e. mine). so why not open it up!
Price is $10 for 3 months, $19 for 6 months.

And yes, will give you unused credit money back etc etc if you're unsatisfied for whatever reason. I'm really not in this for the money, it's more to utilize something I spent hours building up, plus to cover the costs of my internet / server hardware.

free accounts:
will provide 10 rotating free accounts at any given time for test purposes, will base it off of usage. so if you use the free account, i'll keep it up indefinitely, if not then account will be removed after 14 days and given to the next person in line.
Free accounts do not have MAPI access, have 50mb storage, have no aliases either.
Depending on utilization I may increase this 10 free account limit.
few people are asking about synching from multiple sources...
from my understanding i can only give you one alias for your accounts, which means you can't select your "from." however you're free to forward as many accounts as you wish to the account i create for you, but you can only send from one "alias."
another multi-synching thing people are asking is whether you can sync calendar with your desktop and email with my service. sure!! its best that way in fact - that's what i do. i have my outlook on my desktop which has my calendar, contacts, and only sync my email via push on exchange to my server... you can even take this a step further and set up IMAP access so what you see in your email client is the same as what you'll see in your pocket outlook... if you delete from your desktop, whoosh it disappears from your PDA too
mail2web.com offer free exchange with push and 1gb limits. Been using them for a year now and there pretty good. You can also enable their email aggregator. Thisis where it picks up pop3 mail from your other mail accounts into the one.
They also offer a subscription if you want some enhanced services but it is more than yours. Used to be $2 but they more than doubled the price Not so bad for me though as Im in the UK and the exchange rate is good but still, a huge leap.

i used mail2web for a couple of weeks when i first got my phone their free service, however, does not support aliasing and I didn't want that. so my options were to either pay $5 a month or just set up my own server. i of course went for the latter!
the aggregator is an unnecessary feature if you ask me. any email provider that allows pop access would also allow forwarding access. forwarding would just be much much faster (i.e. instant) versus pop where you have to tell the aggregator to download email every x minutes.
but yeah, anyway, choice is always a good thing
MAPI (i.e. desktop outlook) access is now enabled
still plenty of resources to use up so drop me a line if interested!
going to take the server down for about 15-20 minutes this afternoon for a quick reboot and offline backup. planning for 3:00pm GMT. please be patient, hopefully it should be done much much faster!

Also - I don't think that my ISP actually supports email forwarding (BTYahoo/BTInternet) ... so does you support email collection yet ?

I've been using Chamelion's mail service for about a month now...
I have an exchange server for my work mail, but just needed a fast, clean IMAP server, with no ads and resonable storage. I also get no mobile signal at home, so connect over wifi in the house, and push email rewuires a GPRS connection to work.
I have my mail polled by my device every 10 minutes, and also have an IMAP account set up on my Outlook on my work system, so I have a consolidated personal email account at Chamelion's servers. I've forwarded my personal domain mail to the server, and created cname records on my personal DNS for imap.mydomain.com and smtp.mydomain.com to go to chamelion's, so my mail setup looks totally like it's my own server!
RECOMMENDED TO EVERYONE!

Quick update regarding update in the server!
I know I've had some VERY avoidable downtimes this past few months. Because this is running on a laptop it has been unplugged from the power / ethernet while its been moved.
however good news! I've just purchased a replacement - a nice server
Specs - dual core AMD 5600+ with 2 gb RAM, 820gb storage (for those attachments ).
i'll do the switchover soon as i get the machine, should hopefully take 10-15 minutes as i just need to image the drive across.
once i get the machine i'll push up the trial accounts to 15 or 20 so if you're interested i'll post here when the migration is done and you can drop me a note

been getting a few PMs recently about whether i still offer this (maybe its the iphone crowd finding a cheaper alternative to apple's crazy crap service!).
yes i do and i think users can attest to the fact that since the upgrade to the new server been up and running at 100% since june!

quick note - yes there was a 3 hour outage between 5am and 8ish am on saturday; sorry about that. seems my ISP went down, given how short the outage was and how this was the first one in god knows how long i didn't bother spending 1/2 an hour on the phone with them figuring out what the issue was will chase it up if it happens again though!
can someone who has successfully set up outlook 07 with my service PM me with the settings they've used? i need to get some instructions on my site on how to do it, and i don't use exchange 07 myself...

This Blackberry stuff everyone is chatting about is puzzling me..... :?
Now, I have never owned one, or for that matter seen one.. so my questions are:
1: What does this thing do that is so special?. I know you can get your emails delivered to it, but you can do this with the XDA via gprs/wifi.
2: What is this Blackberry plugin/software for the XDA(IIs)? does it give the same functionality as a Blackberry?
Sorry if I sound a little dumb, but I have never taken the time to look into this product and I thought this would be the ideal place for a sensible answer!

The blackberry device is like a PDA, but with the ability to receive emails from a blackberry enterprise server (BES). This server pushes the emails to you as soon as the email arrives at the server. All email clients (by en large) query the server to see if there is email and the get it when the server says that there exists new email. With a blackberry you get the email instantly (no need to keep querying the server).
The blackberry software is supposed to allow you to get that push email access on your palm/pocket pc
personally I dont like RIM devices, they dont support non-latin characters, and I have no need for push email. My job doesnt pay me enough to have access to me 24/7

Push email is very handy even if your job does not pay you enough to be on call 247! I spend a lot of time away from home, so use my XDA to check my personal emails as well as work! Although the IIs does not support (Yet!) blackberry you can try the duality software from Smartner. This is simple to use, and is the nearest thing to push email until the BB client becomes available. www.smartner.com

The smartner software polls the server every few mins. This costs me quite a bit over gprs, so I always connect manually when I need to. (I can change it to poll auto every 15, 30 60 mis etc.) BUT, with the smartner software it synchronises with my pop server, so if I delete from my pda it is also deleted from my pop server etc - this is what I like.
I was expecting the smartner software to have email "pushed" to it. But it seems to poll (like I said above) every few mins. Im not sure if this is "real" push email?
I have noticed Microsoft Messenger can stay connected for ages with very little data exchanged untill I get a message. I was expecting this to be the case with smartners push software.

The biggest benefits are for corporate email users...
1. Push email (faster and more efficient)
2. Calendar / unread mark synchronization
3. Attachment viewing (the most popular file formats are all supported)
There really is nothing else that is widely deployed that does these things (or at least does them well and is an excepted corporate standard).
In the absence of the Blackberry client software, I'm using IMAP mail, which I find to be ridiculously slow when compared to my old Blackberry handheld.
So all emails have to be routed through the BB server then?? (sorry im a bit ignorant in these matters). Just interested because I run my own email server in my office (mdaemon) and all email gets routed through that and distributed to the various people in my office, so if someone wanted to use blackberry we wouldnt be able to use our mail server as well??
If you want to access internal corporate push email you have to connect the Blackberry Enterprise Server to a mail server, it supports 3 mail servers: Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino or Novell GroupWise. If you want to access Hotmail, AOL, IMAP or POP3 you have to use Blackberry Web Client on the device which I presume is pull.
The nice thing about blackberries is they support one-handed operation like a mobile phone and have a keyboard. PPC PE should really get it's act together in terms of one handed operation.
I've setup a cheapo version of "kind-of" push email - a perl script on a server that polls a POP3 mail server every 10 minutes and sends out a txt message with subject and some of the body, can't handle HTML emails yet though.
No doubt A2DP/Pushmail is an excellent feature available with Universa but at the same time is the worst thing to pay some extra money on monthly basis to use it.
Can anybody find/help to suggest free pushmail service providers?
I may be a foolish person to ask this question but anyway want to save some money which I believe everybod wants

I think mail2web one is free? Not sure. I went with the £4/mth 4smartphone.net one, just in case. It's fecking superb.
Don't be so sure... There could be websites that could offer free Exchange Accounts in order to send you advertising emails and stuff...
Something which a lot of people would be willing to accept in many cases...
I am using http://www.vgsmail.com/ppc/ with my IMAP account, and everything is great. You only pay it once, and you can use it to receive Push email from any compatible account...
There aren't of course the advantages of an Exchange server, but it is an excellent solution for anyone first time learner you wants to see the possibilities offered by Push Email...

This only applies to the Service VGSMAIL which was a email Provider. It does NOT apply to the software for PPC which is something completely different.

I'm testing a exchange server with my own adsl connection. some people say you only need 20 mb traffic a month for pushmail, so i think 15,- will be far to much for this service.
the only thing you will need:
- adsl connection
- domain (7,- for a year)
- a computer that doesn't eat much electricity and is up for 24/7
- MS 2003 + exchange server (may be expensive....)
the only thing that will be difficult is to make good backups.
save the money for the domain and sign up at dyndns.org, it's free and made for changing IPs :wink:
As mentioned elsewhere in this forum, mail2web LIVE is an e-mail provider who will push e-mail to your phone FOR FREE. I only signed up today, but it's working perfectly so far...

I signed up for a FREE mail2web LIVE account. Sent an email from Hotmail to Yahoo Mail (set to forward to mail2web) but not seeing anything on my QTEK 9000 (with latest ROM update)
I thought mail2web LIVE is FREE?

I assume you've set up your mail2web "Exchange Server" in ActiveSync on your JasJar?
Once you're logged in to your mail2web account, you can get the settings that need to be entered into ActiveSync from "E-Mail Settings" link on the control panel:

Put the user ID and server address into AS and choose to update 'as and when' new mail arrives, and you're up and running...
any of you guys come across this app.. it's for getting push e-mail without an ms exchange server.
question: has anyone got a way round applying this to hotmail? i think the trick is to get outlook to accept hotmail and then use this app.
also, i'm running on vista so this isn't yet compatible.. anyone aware of a similar app - i can use with my hotmail - that'll do the trick?

I have had a quick look at this app and it seems like a good thing to me - bearing in mind I've seen other push email accounts charging £15 a month.
I have a couple of questions though, someone here might know the answer.
AIUI the email is delivered over GPRS so you need to be connected all the time.
so the first question is what sort of data gets transferred if you are connected all the time but not actually downloading anything? for example if you look at your broadband connection, even when you are not using it, small amounts of data are sent/received periodically. over the course of the day this could quite easily add up!!
next question is, although I have an O2 Orbit, I'm not actually on O2. I have a temporary T-Mobile sim card while I wait to start my new job and they give me my new phone (I'll just take the sim out and put it in my orbit). I have only seen an option to set up the configuration for O2. Can the GPRS settings for other networks be entered manually? or will I have to remove all the O2 settings that are installed after a hard reset to enable me to do this? (not something I really want to do)
In answer to the other comments about mail2web and mail2wap. I have been using this site for years and years, the only thing is you have to connect to the web and then check your mail....you might not have any but you still have to pay to connect and transfer data. Hence the push email is a better idea as you KNOW you have mail as opposed to checking in case you MIGHT have some with mail2web.

My understanding is that the free Mail2Web Live product uses the older Always Up To Date technology. i.e. it sends you a silent text message when new email arrives which triggers Pocket Outlook to connect by POP or IMAP and get your mail.
That is not a push mail product. It is a triggered pull. Not bad for free, but one should be clear it does not include Direct Push... unless something has recently changed (please feel free to correct me)
Mail2Web also offer Personal Exchange, a paid hosted exchange service which has Direct Push. I personally did not like their service as I was unhappy with the Junk mail filtering they use, but their most basic hosted exchange service with Direct Push is extremely cheap... though not free.
so, let me just make sure that I understand this correctly....
the mail2web live product whilst not being a true push service does advise me that I have received an email by sending a silent SMS which tells my device to connect to the net and sync with the mail2web server to get my emails yes? (assuming I am somewhere where I have wifi or internet access)
that doesn't sound too bad....as basically what I am after is something that tells me I have an email when it arrives in my inbox. All I need is a text message telling me who it's from and the subject. That way I can decide whether I want to connect to the net and pick up the email or whether it's something that can wait.
is there anyone who offers a service like that? (I think hotmail do but I don't want to use hotmail)

Sorry to the Mods if this is getting off-topic (realize this is an Artemis - Emoze thread... please move if appropriate!)
Goota be honest, it is a few months since I used any Mail2Web service so I can only report on my past experience. I recall they had fairly responsive/informative support by email and recommend you ask them directly.
I think Always Up To Date (AUTD) doesn't work quite the way you describe... not that it is bad at all, and it may well do what you need. Anyway, how it works is you would be installing a little application on your device which can recognize a special hidden/silent text message from the Exchange Server (you cannot see or read this message). It just tells you device that there is new email, that is all, Then your device switches on (screen goes on, comes out of suspend) and does a an email logon as if you had opened the relevant Pocket Outlook email account and hit the send/receive choice. It then logs on from scratch and retrieves your email (just headers or everything will based on your settings).
The good is this is may be free and can work on a pre-WM5 device. The downside is that it is much slower than true Direct Push and uses more battery. With Direct Push a handshake is already established with the Exchange Server and when you new mail arrives it drops into you mailbox within seconds without your device even needing to come out of standby. You just hear the audio alert of email arriving (depending on your prefered settings).
I tried the least expensive paid Exchange Service from mail2web. It was only about 2 USD a month with no contract so I am not complaining. I personally didn't like that, for me, it incorrectly marked almost every single message as Spam and I could not adjust this adequately unless I upgraded to their most expensive Exchange offering... which costs about the same as other similar services.
I am trying out the 1 and 1 Exchange service at present. OK, not fantastic. Probably we should have a thread specially for a good email round up... likely there is one already and I should probably be posting there....

What you need is WM6 with Windows Live!
I have a Wizard running WM6... just got my XDA Orbit on O2, WM5 :-(
On WM6, the MSN service is replaced with Windows Live, and that allows you to configure a hotmail account to sync up automatically or at specific intervals.
You can do it in WM5 using the MSN messageger with an ID linked to your hotmail acocunt, but you have to be logged in to messgencger for it to work.
If anyone can extract the Windows Live component form a WM6 rom....
I recently tried another application from qore.
The idea is that you get your emails forwarded to a service that texts you when you get an email (in my case T-Mobile offers this service). The application intercepts this text (you receive no notification, it's all done in the background) and triggers a send/receive on the email account specified on your unit. In my case connecting via GPRS and downloading my emails.
sadly, it seemed to interrupt random texts and since it's done in the background, you don't even know that the text has been intercepted. I was getting angry phone calls from my mates asking why I hadn't replied to texts, that I hadn't even seen!!
Push Email
1. Register a Hotmail account and use the included Microsoft Pocket MSN software it works!
2. Register an account with http://www.consilient.com it's free and allows push mail from many services...

Is there any particular reason why you'd want S/R every minute?
It would have a pretty major impact on battery life, and also potentially cost a lot more in data charges, because even if there are no messages, there would be some handshaking/polling
If immediate access to email is needed, you would be better to subscribe to an Exchange Hosted service, giving 'Push' mail, calendar and contacts. Costs about £40 per annum, plus about 4MB data per month for the connection (which is less data than 1 minute polling would use)
I didn't know it can affect battery performance. I use web n walk so data charges aren't really a factor.
I just want to receive emails quicker than every 5 minutes thats all. I don't get this direct push technology email stuff?

In WM5 I put there the EMAIL2SMS email address that my operator gave me, and when I receive an e-mail, the exchange server of my operator sends me this special EMAIL, that is received like SMS, that tells my phone to connect to the exchange server and to sync. No need to sync on particular time, or the connection to be always on. In WM5 this option is in ActiveSync>Menu>Schedule>(a second blue link under the "peak times" link).
I don't know I explain this right, but if you ever used this future on WM5, you should know.

No need to sync on particular time, or the connection to be always on. In WM5 this option is in ActiveSync>Menu>Schedule>(a second blue link under the "peak times" link).

That is an old implemention of 'Push' email, and is not supported now that later WM5 (MSFP) and WM6 supports proper Push email direct to your inbox.
You would need to speak to your provider for more specific instructions.

There will be a battery hit, though I'm not sure how much.
To keep your own email addresses, you would need to pay for a Push Email subscription, and even then, I think you can only use one of your own addresses, so probably not for you.
It might be an idea to look into WebIS Flexmail. Apparently it can handle push using IMAP accounts. There is some info Here in a thread on 4WM. Towards the bottom are some posts by Alex of WebIS explaining it.

Hi Everyone,
There has been a lot of discussion about the best way to use email on a smartphone like the Tytn. Does everyone use the IMAP protocal for best results?
Personally, I get A LOT of mail for work and I would love to find a way to get the mail I want but not have to deal with junk mail and other emails that are automated on our side workwise.
Any suggestions?

if the email server supports IMAP then use it....
Or to get full functionality, rent an exchange server mailbox from someone like 4smartphone (for about US$50 per annum) and get push email etc.
IMAP generates a lot more traffic than POP3. Just fetching a single
mailheader (send/receive when there is 1 new mail) yields over 10 kB more
traffic in IMAP. As my one subscription is limited to 10 MB/month, thus
using POP3 makes much more sense (speed could also be an argument,
altought even in GPRS it doesn't differ that much). Conseqently, I have
different entries for the same mailbox (currently: 3 IMAP, 1 POP3).... but
this also has to do with my question:
How do you guys work with different outgoing mailservers?
I have duplicated my mail account 4 times: once for each outgoing
mailserver I want to use. I then just make sure I have selected the
correct mailbox prior to starting a new message. But this hardly is an
elegant solution (I have to fetch mails for all of the accounts to keep
them up to date). As the different mailservers have no log in, I cannot
use them when not accessing via that particular provider. I have been
looking at some mechanism to hack the hosts file, but the tool
"pockethosts" isn't very well suited for this purpose (and haven't found
anything else).

Hi, I'm currently using 3 email addresses on my phone plus the sync with my pc.(and home pc)
All I've come up with so far is to set all email pop/imap to only download headers, (and 2 of them only set for the last 3 days only),then I need to "select" manually what email I want to read and download them, the rest I leave for outlook to look after on my PC.
At the end of the day I finish up with a lot of "unread" emails on my phone, BUT once sync'd with pc they are all copied across anyway, just in my "outlook" folders, not my phone email accounts, if all that makes sense.
Any replies of forwards on my phone from any email includes my signature "email" that I prefer to use.
ie seperate work, personal etc

I went to Gmail. Now it front-ends 4 different POP3 accounts, and with the spam protection it has it saves me from deleting a lot of crap. Only downside is that although I can read all my email on my Hermes, I can't really manage my Gmail account the way I want from the native mail client on the Hermes. No worries, I can always use the Mobile Gmail java app or go through IE to the mobile Gmail website. It's working for me...ymmv.
