Hi guys,
Some of you may have seen my other thread. Basically, I can't boot my phone into recovery due to a broken volume down button and so I'm looking to get that button repaired. Can anyone advise of either a good Desire HD repairer in Melbourne, or elsewhere in Aus that I can mail too? It's an industry with a lot of sharks and dodgies, so I was hoping someone on here might have dealt with a good crowd and could pass on a recommendation. I'll certainly post my feedback after dealing with them for everyone else too.
Thanks in advance.

A broken volume button can be annoying but there are many other ways to get in to recovery if that's the only reason for getting it repaired.
You could download 4ext recovery control app. There's an option to boot in to recovery from inside the app, and you can even use the new touch recovery so there's no need to use the hardware buttons.
Or if you're comfortable with adb commands, "adb reboot recovery" works.
As for phone repairs, I used Phone Doctor and they were really good. But i'm in Sydney. Not sure if they have a store in Melbourne.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445357
There's the original thread discussing it.
Believe me, sadly it seems the only option I'm left with. It appears USB debugging was turned off, I can't get the phone to do much via USB cable. I've tried ADB reboot recovery - no dice, it doesn't see the device. Probably should have been clearer in my original post that it's not just about not being able to boot into recovery, that in of itself wouldn't bother me, if my phone wasn't in a boot loop . Therefore I'm guessing it might be too late for the stuff you advise.
I'll have a look at the things you mentioned but yeah, nothing else has worked so I think it may have to go down the hardware repair road. If you can advise anything you think might work in the phones current state though, I'm all ears and I would be as grateful as all get out.
Cheers for the Phone Doctor tip. What are their prices like? Cheaper is obviously better, though I don't mind paying a bit extra to avoid dodgies. Some of the reviews I've seen for mobile repair places on google are frankly scary! Don't suppose you mean these guys? http://www.fonedoc.com.au/repairs.php Similar name.

hey mate you might have already taken your phone somewhere, sorry about the lack of reply. the place i went to was actually drphone.com.au, they fixed it on the spot but when they put it back together it didn't exactly look seamless. what can you expect though right?
i don't know about the places you posted quotes from, but i would recommend going in to the store to get it done, don't send it anywhere cos you never know when you'll get it back.
also i had a quick read through your other thread, it seems like you've tried everything you could have, and a hardware repair is what you need to do.
On the off chance that your adb setup was the problem and not your phone, try this zip I've attached. It comes from leith51's radio flash guide, but i use it as a quick start for all adb commands. (credit to jkoljo as well)
Unpack the zip anywhere on your pc, doesn't matter. Go in to the folder and click "Start here", it will open a command prompt. With your phone plugged in, type "adb devices" - it should give you a printout of the phone's serial number. If not, the phone isn't recognised and you're back to getting it repaired. But if it did work, the next step is "adb reboot recovery", then full wipe, install a new rom.
Good luck!
edit: removed zip, find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10259622&postcount=1
Thanks heaps dude, appreciate the time taken to reply and REALLY appreciate you taking the time to read the other thread to see if you could help. Hoping I can learn enough stuff to be helpful to others down the line rather than just leeching, this seems a pretty good community here.
Not sent her away yet no, I'll give that file a go and let you know if it does the trick.
I think I may go with the Fone Doc guys, they seem pretty legit compared to a lot of others I've seen, gonna do a bit more research first though. Sadly I can only find two reviews for them and they're fairly contradictory of one another, lol; http://www.truelocal.com.au/business/fone-doc/caringbah
Tried your version of ADB - unfortunately with the phone either on and stuck in the ICS bootloop or off, adb is still not picking up on a device. Cheers much for the attempt though, it really is appreciated, looks like I'm not fixing this without forking out cash though. Considering I paid $100 for the phone but, I can't complain too much .

No worries, I leeched a lot at first too but this forum is great, I've learnt so much in a short space of time so now i'm trying to return the favour, so i'm happy to help out.
Sucks that it really is a hardware issue now. But mate, if you only paid $100 for the phone just go for it! the repairs could be $200 and you'd still be coming out ahead!
I'd be interested to know how it goes. Hopefully a new volume rocker fixes it for you
I had some research yesterday, yet I still can't find a proper answer to most of my questions about the following subject. Hoping some of the experts here can contribute some of their knowledge and hopefully I will edit this thread to a guide, or at least spare others the need for wondering around the web as I did.
Well, Few days ago I turned off my phone, and it wont turn on or response to any physical key combination, usb connection (Except for charging the battery) or even that famous Samsung jig (301KΩ Between pin 4 and 5 on the usb connection). It is not recognizable by any device while connected through usb interface. It is permabricked. The worst thing that can happen to a phone while the hardware is intact.
Although the name indicates otherwise, some things can be done in order to get the device working again.
It is a process in which the phone's main bored is exposed, than a special device (e.g riff box) is connected to certain areas on the pcb that were made that way for the initial configuration of the phone back in the factory. The pinout of the connection varies in each model, but the interface is the same and called "Jtag". Than, that device connects to a pc through usb interface.
So the first step would be to get that device and to connect it to both pc and phone's motherboard through a certain pinout that is mostly hard to get. You'll need a driver for that jtag flashing device and a compiled file which you would like to flash in to your phone. I don't know if that file is specific to each model or to the certain chip the phone is using (Can different models with the same chip be flashed the same way? Reply if you know and I'll edit it here).
By what I know, after flashing that file the phone will be accessible through usb interface for further flashing of the rom.
Alternatively, There are some companies that offer that kind of service. I couldn't find any who work with T989, and prices for that kind of service.
I would like to have as much information as possible and maybe eventually I'll be able to get my phone fixed. In that case I'll add some photos and document the process.

1st off, it's "taboo" not tabu. Secondly there is already a pretty good amount of threads that have covered this in detail, I'm certain because I have posted in them. Lastly, please SEARCH the existing threads before creating a new one; the answers to all your questions are already there.
1. Thanks, Changed to "Taboo".
2. I searched, I really did. I went all over google with many key words and covered up this forum as well. All I got is some articles about the jtag protocol, which is good for knowledge but too general for the application I need, and some threads in which people writing that their phone is bricked and asks what to do about it. Not a single post is about how to fix that independently, and what does it require. If you could give me link to these threads you say that covers up the subject, I'll delete this thread at once.

don't pay attention to that guy he like to troll every where he goes. Try to google search for mobile tech or Adam Outler, and check if he get the Jtag service for our phone. If I'm not wrong the charge for the Vibrant was $50.00 plus shipping and handling. I hope you can fix your phone.

Do you know what caused the brick?

Searched, and yet no result. Sending the phone to the U.S is quite risky. I have no idea how they're intended to pack it before sending it back. I would rather doing this in Israel.
I saw on ebay several devices associated with Jtag. the price starts from 10$ for a simple usb dongle, through 30$ devices, which is the price of most of the jtag devices I found, to the 150$ riff box that is associated with phone unbricking.
By what I know Jtag is a simple serial protocol. I just need sort of "bridge" to translate the logic 1's and 0's with the right voltage level and certain clock speed to a usb interface or even RS232. How expensive can that be?
I also contacted several ebay sellers which offer a jtag repair service. they all answered this model is not supported.
I would go to Samsung labs in Israel and see what they can do to get it working.
I just thought to invest 20$, get that sort of device and to get it done by my own.
Another issue is the pinout. The pinoput of the Jtag connection is not shown in any website, so I have no way of knowing how to connect on this specific PCB.
Last thing I need is that new bootloader I can flash, and a software to flash it through. Where can I download it?
About the reason for bricking the phone, I have no Idea. As I said, last time I've installed new rom was more than a week prior to the incident. I've used some overclocking app mostly to underclock my phone, cause it drained the battery like hell before, even while it was running on stock and after changing the rom several times.
I also used some usb otg device which worked normally, but was not plugged to the device even few hours before it was bricked.
Hopefully we can figure out the cause of these permabricks so we can prevent it from happening to more people.

I gotta say, this is quite alarming. That the phone can just hard brick itself like this spontaneously.
I've had some scary experiences with the phone myself. Like a couple of random reboots that required the long power press for the phone to power back on. At least it always came back on.
I'm also from Israel myself so a similar scenario can bring me to the same situation as you.
Good luck with getting any kind of solution.

did you look for a service manual?
- the manual may cover schematics for jtag device.
Been flashing phones since the Razr and never bricked a phone I couldn't repair myself. That is until I tried to flash my GSII back to stock through odin. Sent it to Samsung and they had to replace motherboard. Now I'm a little nervous about using odin.

Did you solve your problem?
I was looking at using QPST
QPST is a program often frowned upon here at xda. It is commonly used to flash phones, and has little to do with android coding. The software is made for Qualcomm (or by them) and this device has a chip from them in it. This has tools for building and installing bootloaders and partition tables. Our device after a hard brick (and still serviceable by JTAGing) has a com port open still and if you load the driver in windows you will see a port number as others here on XDA have said. The driver allows ODIN to see the device but not connect. QPST does connect, but I have not attempted to flash anything to it since I have not built any files to load. I'm kind of stuck creating the needed xml that makes the partition table and headers and file that are to be loaded to partitions. This is really a softbrick, in my opion, but nobody has the knowledge for this level of building and coding, with this tool, here at XDA. If somebody does, it may make those selling JTAG services mad, but that would mean we could fix our phones on our own. On my own, I'm a few weeks away from this solution, with some help from people here that know how to write xml for partition tables and can help me locate files for a build, I can generate the files, test them, make a write up and post the solution in just a few days.
By the way, this is a multi-device solution in the long run. We get one fixed and we can start on the others with this same issue, where the only life left in the device is the Qualcomm download mode driver showing in windows device manager.

Please consider me Novice in JTag field, Do we need different boxes for different devices, i have seen several videos on Jtag,I have sent mail to their US distributor bcoz unfortunately we do not have any in Canada. What's the success rate on these devices ?? Do we have any instructional videos or any support how to use RIFFBOX , just want to make sure if i would be able to use it before i make my order
I have just realised that you don't tell us if you have warranty... if you have it then use it. Cause the way I've told you before probably will void the warranty.
----
I don't know how it works in your country but here in mexico, there are several External Service Centers (not official) they repare anything, softbrick, hardware brick, change the case cover, dialpad, etc. but it has a cost. If you buy the box just to repair your phone I think it will cost a lot of money to you since this boxes works with a lot of models of different brands (they are expensive) and you need technical knowledge about how to work with them.
In my case, the Service Center first tried with riffbox (cheaper and fast way) and it worked to turn on the phone in a couple of minutes, it was indicating there was bootloader broken so it worked when tried to rapair it but since my emmc memory was kinda buggy, it died the same day, so i left it again to warranty on the SC and they then tried with jtag this way they told me is like the "hard reset" since wipe and make again the partition system and install all the stuff, now works pretty well but they make a warning to me abut future deads because the final solution and the real one that needs my phone is to change the motherboard (they don't change just the emmc).
But if your emmc is ok, they probably just need to use riffbox maybe jtag but your phone will surely be ok again.
the cost for the reparation should be about 30-50 USD
If you don't know where is one of this external service centers on your town, try searching on google about riffbox, jtag service center in -your town-.

Thanks a lot for this much knowledge about this product. I always help my friend fixing their phones and some of my good friends pay me for that. Its kind of part time job for me. I am just crazy to try something new in this field so I am not worrying about money part right now. That is why I am just seeking information how much it will cost and from where i can get information how to use this box. I guess we need lot of new things to learn before i start using it. Please let me know whatever u know about it, I am gathering knowledge from google too and other websites , Your help so far is very much appreciated. Please let me know what else you know about these riffbox or jtag ?
I've seen some tutorials saying the G4 is easily repairable, but I have some specific questions about repairs. The WiFi module on my phone is completely dead, and I want to try to replace it somehow. This guide shows where the module is, and what kind it is. Has anyone attempted a similar repair? Is it even possible? Where did you get the spare parts? Should I just try to get a whole new logic panel from a different G4? Does anyone have tips?
I tried adding links to the guide and the specific chip, but the spam filter blocked me out.
broadcom com/products/wireless-connectivity/wireless-lan/bcm4339
ifixit com/Teardown/LG+G4+Teardown/42705
It's going to be very difficult to get a single broadcom chip. Most of the time they're only sold in big quantities exclusively to corporate bodies or educational institutes. But let's say you got one. I'd urge you to use a BGA station or have it replaced by someone who has experience in using such a device, OR, do it like this guy here. It may show an eMMC replacement but the procedure is exactly the same.
Getting a new mainboard is also not very easy. Not only is it very difficult to find one, most of the time, smartphone logic boards have to be rewritten with the correct IMEI/SN/ESN or whatever. If you're lucky, you'll find a seller that offers such a service for a small fee.
I don't recommend getting a used mainboard in any case unless the seller is a trusted dealer. In such a case, you have to take care of the IMEI and SN stickers on the back of the phone. Make sure you attach them on the corresponding devices.
So, I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S9 (T-Mobile) from some random stranger online, And when i got the S9 it did not come with anything else but the phone which immediately raised a flag for me.
When i tried to set it up it asked me to connect to the internet to set up, And once i connected to the internet and clicked next, I then found out it was google locked? It required me to log in with the previous owners email, When i contacted the owner he did not respond at all and i assume he stole it from someone else and sold it to me. I started to search around the internet and found a video of a person unlocking it in some way with Odin3 so i tried to do what he asked and nearly got a virus from it which left me unable to trust any other videos or sites, So I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help me some way to unlock and use this device, I tried going to a phone store near me to try unlocking it and they said it would cost me $120 usd, But i was sure i am able to do this at home by myself for free, But i'm not quite sure what to do without getting any malware. So if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated
You could try flashing stock firmware using Odin. Look up your model number on Sam-mobile.
What you are asking is the same as "I stole a phone that is FRP locked, help me gain access"
We have no way to know if you bought it or stole it
If you bought via eBay or similar, contact the site owners, if you used PP or a credit card, open a dispute and get the transaction reversed
If you did a bank transfer, you have details that can identify the seller, start legal proceedings, contact the bank
If you bought online, you will have some sort of digital footprint to find him
And at the end of the day, you took the risk buying unprotected like that
What *Detection* said, this "random stranger" didn't just show up on your computer, you had to find him on a website. If what you said is true, then there is some type of digital footprint. If it was on Ebay, then you have a way to possibly get your money back. Next time, demand a screenshot of the IMEI and do a quick search to find out if the IMEI is clear. If you bought a stolen phone, then your guilty of buying stolen goods.
I know a a method to unlock/bypass it easily but u can google it. like many of the other users are saying, you could have stolen it and trying to get a partner in crime. Just get a refund or ask the person for the info temporarily and then he/she just.change their pw quickly. It'll notify them when u have sucessfully unlocked the device. Good luck.
What's your conscience telling you? Do a trace, get a refund, and return the phone to its original owner.
Thread closed.
FRP (Factory Reset Protection) is done for something and we at XDA do not allow discussions to bypass such security systems. Even if it's for good reasons in the end we don't take that risk.

It simply means that you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with the legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users and those that write great code.
