hello,
somebody know a means of adding 64Mo RAM to have on the whole 128mo RAM in a HTC Universal???
next week I'll get an motherboard with 128Mb RAM soldered on it. Would try to make Uni recognize them.
Great news
Hopefully you guys can figure out how to add more RAM into this device. Please post a result.

Wonderful.
Perhaps, in not long time, we could have 128 MB of RAM in our machines

It's not easy to do solder ram chip in uni, you should need an X-ray machine to check the connection.

I know a site where they could make the solder.
The difficult thing is that the Universal one recognizes the new ram.
I wish that mamaich discovers the way to obtain it.
What the name of THE site.... Please
Umm dont you guys recognise sarcasm???
Oh dear..
It is a company of electronics of Cordoba (Spain), they are GPS importers. They had a serious problem with a complete lot of defective GPS and bought the machines necessary to solder the Chips correctly.
I must speak with Paco and ask to him if can make this work for me.
The company is called Litsur.
Mamaich
What is the progress of making Universal recognise a additional RAM ? Do we have any positive result ??
Please post it when you have it ready.
Thanks mate
Additional ram, or a replacement.. Both sounds good!
It's not so pleasent to see "Not enough memory" warning...
I've got the motherboard, but this week I don't have time even to install it.
any news ?
waiting on you mamaich, with baited breath.
Any news on upgrading RAM / ROM yet. As I have no fear about taking this one apart again to mod the guts!
I have 2 motherboards of Qtek 9000 ... one that is functional and one with USB connector ripped off. Can I take the ram from one and put it to the other?
no news. I'm too busy now in real life

Yes you did read correctly.
The htc hermes does have a GPS
chip it's circuits, however
the chip on all release platforms have had the chip deliberately disabled in the following manor.
1.drivers removed from the roms
2. crucial pins left unconnected
3. a few support components left out
4. antenna pins and support connections for both an internal and external antenna left nonexistent .
It's very unfortunate as I spent the better part of a month looking between the thread here and on 4winmobile only to find that the best of the best hardware hackers had failed to come up with a resolve due to usually lack of tools required, components difficult at times to obtain, and the almost 98% chance of unrepairably damaging the main pcb or the surrounding components in which you would then be left with the preverbial brick of which there is no safty net or special bootloader to save you. thusly I gave up and finally just did what most get when they buy or get the hermes withco pilot. I bought a good bluetooth gps receiver and loaded software for it to be used by. in this case it was tom tom 6.
I feel for you in this one as it would have been nice if the hermes was like the artimas [ie: o2 orbit, t-mobile mda compact]
and had it built in. But alas the is no technical resolve that can be achieved as of now for this other then to go bluetooth external receiver.
*hehe chalk one up for the noobs referring to the senior vs new members to the board which I find funny as I may not post as much as others but I know more then what the rating suggests heheh*
my question is why would high paid asian techs leave some gps chip that would not be used
that is not business like at all
just like carriers leaving ot the front video camera, and still charing ridiculous prices for the unit !!!!!!!!
Does anyone who lives in the USA have a story to tell on how they went about upgrading their Uni?
Let me get this straight:
There is no one in the USA that has gotten the 128mb upgrade?
guess not?
PPC Geeks does work on the Uni, ie. mini usb replacements, motherboards, and VGA screen replacements as well as some motherboard repairs. I've asked them about it and have not heard a reply from them as of this time. I am sending my unit to them to replace my mini usb port and hoping to get the 128 MB done as well; maybe if enough people ask them about it we could get it done?
Oops I think its PPC TECHS not geeks.
I am in Canada and have a uni with a damaged mini-USB and am also interested in the 128mb upgrade...do you have details for PPC Tech or PPC geeks or whatever its called
Cheers

Qtek 9000 Upgraded Memory 64mb to 128mb
I just got my "Qtek 9000" back last week from PocketPCTechs on Monday which they upgraded from 64mb to 128mb of ram. As far as recognizing 128mb of ram which it does which I tried flashing with Beasty & Laurentius 2.09.01 only if you use the cooked roms that support 128mb of ram. If you do not will only recognize 64mb of ram since it is missing a Nk.exe file that makes device recognize 128mb of ram. I am using Jason's latest rom which only recognizes 64mb of ram. I am anxiously awaiting for his next rom release that supports 128mb of ram since this is the most stable cooked rom out there with all the bells & whistles on it.

So B&L ROM worked or didn't?
thanks for the link
PPC Techs
I just wanted to take credit for getting them to put the upgrade on their site. I called and emailed about 50 other places before they said yes and added it to their site. I know a whole ton of places to buy the ram but finding a place to do the reflow seems like the hard part. I'm glad they said yes. Interestingly, the first day they added the upgrade to their official list of upgrades with a link, the price was 25 bucks less. I waited a week and the price shot up. Still, they include the ram, warranteed it, supposedly tested it, and they even sent it back to me rushed delivery, so they get my two thumbs up. They ask that you post about them somewhere, and I was going to, but I came back to this thread and the rest of the world has found them as soon as they added it to their upgrades. Do you know what this means??! HTC Universal is capable of being technically superior to a whole lot more phones for a whole lot more people, and is at least 2 years less dated. A lot of people buy the Iphone (apple) because it costs around 350USD and has superior ram to the Universal and good press, but I got my latest Universal for 200USD on ebay and the ram was 149USD on PPCTechs, and Universal has a faster CPU and a more customizable software base. Yay for competition.
PPCTechs ships with B&L
I ordered the upgrade by phone before it was on the site and it works great so far. As far as ROM's are concerned, they flashed B&L onto my Uni before sending it back.
Between the 128 Ram, and the 16 Gig SD card, why would anyone want an iPhony?
Why don't have someone can up my Uni in Thailand?
I'm trying to track down some of the ram chips the Infineon HYB18L256160bf-7.5 they are an obsolite component now, so if any one knows where I can source these ICs for that would be great. I have the equipment and skills to fit BGA's, I actually run couses on it, so if I can get a reliable source for these ICs I maybe able to offer an upgrade service.
Hi, there appears to be a couple of threads on this topic: Htc Universal Memory Upgrade. and 128 Mb RAM on Universal
It appears a company called Retronex has been used for supply and soldering, but WizP mentions a company called Xel in his post found here.
Their website is http://www.xel.co.uk/
Hope this helps, and let me know if you are going to upgrade Uni's as I'm looking to do this.
Thanks for the info, I had almost given up on sourcing the memory within the UK. I have contacted the guys at Xel and they have be very helpful. They have a good stock of these chips and I have ordered and recivered 2 of them.
My plan is to get some time next week to strip out the MBD from my Uni and rework the BGAs. I'll keep all those who are interested posted of my progress. Once I have done this I will also be able to let you know if I can offer this as a service.

Hi to everyone and happy monday
I would like to update my JasJar to but... where can I find the required 128Mb expansion?
Cheers
Good morning to all,
For all of you wacthing this thread wanting to know how I have got on with the 128Mb upgade to my Uni. It is good news I now have a 128Mb Uni , not without a few tense moments though. I got the 2 old M-RAM chips off with no problems, but when reaplacing them with thew new ones a couple of solder balls didn't go down right on one of them. So I had to remove it, re-ball it, and replace it. Luckly it all went well the second time.
The second tense moment was after I re-assembled my Uni. It was doing a good impression of a brick , however this turned out to be just a flat battery.
So once changed I switched it on it booted up and is now showing 128Mb of RAM. I haven't noticed any great jump in app loading speed yet, I may need to tweak something in the ROM not sure yet (using WM6.1 RAN V7.6).
I'll keep you posted, on stablitiy.
Watch this space, upgrade servise coming soon.
Well done D.Apsley - you may want to look for ROM's with no page-pool. See here for Ranju's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=367448&page=129#post2154517
I am not sure of a huge speed increase, but it would mean for me that I could run my GPS software without having to clear out all programs fom memory (usually need's a reboot before starting the software).
Re Upgrading to 128mb. help !!!!!!
i've had a phone conversation with people from Retronix. they can do it they even can provide parts. but i've got one big problem. i'm not british and got big problem to understand scottish accent / or language. so if i could ask anybody from this forum to contact them and ask all detiles and then post it here. tel no to Retronix 01236433345 ext 310. thank you for help rgds. Seb.
Results of 128Mb upgrade
Well i've been runing my Exec with the 128Mb for a week now and all is well. I have not noticed a massive change in speed, but I'm now able to run several app's at once without any system slow down or out of memory compliants.
I'm now going to offer this service to other members, but I need to work out the logistics of it. Namely costs and type of service, meaning Full Service, all parts supplied just send Exec and payment, returned when done, or Rework Service parts not supplied, send Exec, parts and payment, returned when done.
Will do screen repairs if I can source LCD and/or Digitiser.
Also looking at repalcement srevice for Metal LCD Cover plate. Has any tried to remove one.
Hi D.Apsley
I want to upgrade my Qtek9000 by my self I already order the chips and I have the ability to replace BJA components, also I have the HTC Service Manual if you want I can upload it.
As I know the only thing I should do, is replace the two BJA's and solder one 30Ohm resistor, please let me know if I need to do anything else.
Also I can get you the place that I ordered the chips maybe you can buy from them also.

That is great news!
Now some questions:
1. Will you accept customers from sweden, and if so what will the price tag be at?
2. Do you think it is possible to uppgrade to perhaps 256 MB instead of 128?
(That would be even better)
3. Do you give any warrant on your work, for instance, if I send you my device for an uppgrade and you accidentaly brick the device! What happens then?
Thanks in advance!
1) He hasn't figures out a price for the UK yet - so obviously not for 'foreign' customers.
2) We know 128 is the max.
3) We know the guy is doing because he can - not as a business - so how do you suggest he could offer a warranty?
Hi All,
If someone wants to buy the chips I have two places that you can get them, both of them have the chips on stock and are very nice guys.
1. Mail : [email protected] his name is John. Company web site http://www.hkyixin.net. The chips price is 8$ for etch chip he accept PayPal and he send it buy UPS you should ask for the delivery cost.
2. Mail : [email protected] his name is Lois. Company web site www.aaahkelec.com. The chips price is 6.3$ for etch chip he accept only Western Union should ask for the delivery cost.
I'm already ordered the chips and I'm going to get them on Monday next week. If you have any question regards this I'll be happy to help.

Memory upgrade service available
I will offer an upgrade service to all those who are interested, I can provide the chips as well if required. I will be asking £50 (GBP) for labour and equipment use + return shipping costs. The chips are available for £18 each + shipping, from Xel Electronics Ltd., now I don't mind ordering the chips for you, at cost. I'm offering this as a service not as a business, so I cannot provide any form of warranty and there is a risk of permanent damage to the Uni. I thought I had bricked mine at first, it turned out to be a flat battery. This hardware is delicate. For anyone outside the UK I’m happy to do the work, but we will have to sort out the Shipping and payment on an individual basis, probably best to PM. As I will doing this at work after my actual job I cannot guarantee a fast turnaround.
I will do other types of repairs, LCD Screens, Digitisers, Keyboards, Case swaps. This is because I have the tools to do the work.
I should mention I have found somewhere at claims to have Genuine replacement housing in both Black (£42.95) and Silver (£39.95) go to http://www.mobilefun.co.uk
DIY instructions anyone?
Is it worth my while posting DIY instructions for the memory upgrade, it might give you nightmares once you see what is involved and the cost of the equipment.

Hi,
I know exactly what is involve with the memory replacement and I already have the chips, I'm going to do the upgrade soon, please confirm that I should replace the two BGA ram's and add one 30 Ohm resistor. I have an automatic BGA replacement machine at work.

I just followed the instructions give on the 'Upgrading the Ram on your Universal to 128 MB' link on the HTC Universal wiki page here in xda-developer.
But basically yes remove the 2 x 32Mb M-Ram BGAs, Clean the pads, replace with the 2 x 64Mb M-Ram and solder a wire link across the 0402 pads. I've not come across the 30 Ohm resistor mentioned in any of the instruction, but shorting the two pads works.
Oh by the way there is a small battery on the underside the MBD near the M-Ram BGAs watch out you don't damage it.
Thanks for the tip's.

Hi,
There is no problem the new chips are exactly the package so if you now who to replace BGA's there is no problem. But you should be very very sure that you know who to handle BGA's it is not that simple. What equipment are you going to use?

Problems with reusing BGA's
The problems with reusing the BA chips is that they will have left some of the solder behind on the BA PCB. These solder balls are define specailly for the job, the solder balls used on the M-RAM chips are 400 Mircon lead solder balls. If you are to reuse these chips on another PCB (upgrade your Uni) then you really need to replace these solder balls with new ones to ensure that the BGA will solder down evenly and reliabley if you have one solder joint that does not connect you Uni will not work. You should also X-Ray the BGA's to check that they have soldered properly.

I'm in a very funny position. I have enough BA angel ram chips since I have contacts at a great dealer for cellphones (Windows Mobile Dealer) . The sad part is no one in India seems to know how to get it done or is ready to do it for customers who can even provided the chips. Id hate to send my handset outside my city, but dont have an option. For that matter no one in India seems to have done it here ... or no one with enough recognition to trust
I have a person that make some ram replacement mods for a few ASUS pocket pc's (gsm service) and I will go for an upgrade as soon as possible, here in Bulgaria the procedure costs 25 euro without the chips, I already have a BA board with ram chips
Check out the http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_128_Shop page there is details of someone in Pune, India maybe they can help.
Hi,
I have two Universals, one which works perfect and the other with the display cracked. So, is there any way that i can extract 64megs from the one uni to make the other device run on 128?
Whats the most updated and easiest procedure to do this....any links? Thanks so much...
cheers
UPDATE:
Never mind guys...just realized the unis come with 2 32meg ram chips....and there arent 4 slots i guess. Man, got to stick with the 64.
Are there any online stores i can buy 64megs ram chips? Also, anyone who does this upgrade as a service (In the US or in Singapore?)

Yes
Have a search on Universal section there is a thread where a Hong Kong store sells tha 2 X 64Mb to convert Uni to 128mb!
Then you can sold them to main board and 128Mb!!!
Good luck and tell us how all went!,
It seems like the store which offers ram upgrade in hong kong is "Octomobile.com" but their site seems to be down
I wonder if they've wound up...or are just temporarily down at the moment.
Any other place i can do this? Maybe someplace in Singapore...?
thanks!
