I wouldn't say I love Microsoft, but they do have the market for computer software and I do have quite a bit of their hardware, the MS stearing wheel been a fine bit of kit.
I have used Windows operating systems since Windows 3.1 to the present XP (Vista any day now). I have been using a PocketPC for the past few years with software ranging from Windows Mobile 2003 to the 2005 version, all under licence from the vendor I bourght the phone from.
Whilst the pre packaged software on my PDA is all good and well I have had a much more productive and fun time using my device since I stumbled across XDA-developers.com website, usefull information, people who are in the same boat and development on the software to only increese the usabillity of it.
This is the reason I started this thread.
Everyone that own's a PocketPC/PDA has bourght it. This means that once the device has been bourght you have paid for the Microsoft licence of the installed software.
When you buy a copy of Windows for your home or business computer you have a few differnet ways you can install the software, there are lots of third party bits of software you can install, so you can customize the way your computer is setup.
Microsoft are gonna make xda-developers.com to take down the files that are posted on this site.
I believe that as we have all payed to have the software on our PDA's we have the right to have any version that we want, modified or not. Yes, we shouldn't have versions that haven't been "officially" realeased on our PDA's but even with those there are people who have got the ROM's and made them better.
Microsoft should be quite gratefull that there are people out there to make a bit of software they have developed even better, why should it be any skin of there noses for a bit of software they have allready been paid for!!!
Microsoft can't stop new ROM's been realesed on the internet, if Vista is on all the torrent sites there's no way they are gonna stop a new Windows Mobile ROM appearing.
To conclude...Microsoft should know a good thing when they see it. XDA-Developers.com is that!
Well laid out. I totally agree with you. What M$ doesn't understand is that more roms will start to fly around on un-monitored sites. These sites will lack the support provided at xda-developers and customer complains will sky rocket through the roofs.
Like jack bauer say... "Damn it M$", we need our own Chloe O'brian (a mean betatester)... YOU GUYS!
LONG LIFE XDA-DEVELOPERS!!!
You are right !
M$ have a basic problem in their buisness concept ... not letting people have the freedom that they need and want to upgrade and evolve their OS
And that's why (i believe) people are starting to switch to other OS like OSX or linux.
I am very much afraid that it will also start happening in our mobile decives with symbian and others ...
because although WM5 (and 6) tend to .... crash, hang, or just not work, in my opinion it is the most versitile OS there is .... plenty of programs for it ... and plenty of programmers making new stuff as they go, and that's without including ROM maker which are a whole highly respectable group on their own.
I believe that it is our decision to upgrade, as well as our legal right(for the OS' price is no doubt included in the device's retail price) BUT people must have no right to complain after screwing with their device or worse (bricking it).
And in that respect i agree with M$.
So i propose the middle ground, asking M$ if writing a diclaimer here on XDA that users must go through before downloading and/or upgrading their device will do, and hope that they accept.
if not ...
find a legal loophole, because I for one am not willing to give XDA up just yet !
sorry if i bored you guys, but that's just the way i feel about this whole thing.
UPGRADE ON !
heh.
I have never been one to defend Microsoft, but from reading their letter carefully, it would appear it has more to do with the mobile operators putting pressure on them. Two things I would like to say in response to this.
1) If the mobile operators and manufacturers would employ developers who were even half as quick and resourceful as the developers here, they might actually have sold me a phone that worked properly to start with, unlike my SPV M5000 which was crashing on a daily basis, even with their latest ROM, until I updated it with a ROM from this forum. Had I not been saved by this this amazing forum, I would have demanded a refund, Orange would have lost money and I would have moved to a different company.
2) People who update their phones with ROM images from this forum should know better than to seek support from their mobile operator after having updated their ROM. They should have known that they would not like this.
Now we all have to suffer.
They'll have to face't!

I have never gone to my mobile operator nor the phone support service center! I have not a single doubt in my mind that I know better than the "technician" sitting behind his desk claiming to fix my PDA whenever it hicks up!
This forum and only THIS FORUM, helped 100K of people to fix their own PDAs and even created a wide knowledge to those beginners who knew nada about roms or tweaking pdas!
But sorry to say that OS developers have gone too far this time and as it was rightly said, the tighter and tougher they become the more roms ther will be out there even more than they can imagine, since it is a challenge they've started, they'll have to face't.

What an amazingly constructive comment you made there...... I would say that this is just a part of life and there is nothing we can do about it. To be honest we all knew this course of action was inevitable.
This action is corporate companies trying to protect there product - can you really blame them for that....... Money makes the world go round and all that...

Hi has anyone seen the Iphone ad running in the UK at the moment which has a handy app on it called the tipulator.
This is a simple calculator in which you type in the total amount of your restaurant bill then how much in percentage how much you want to tip then choose how many people you want to split the bill between and it tells you what each person has to pay.
I'm sure this would be pretty simple to build on the WM platform - has anyone seen anything like this?
Ye I second that. Would be a good idea.
I just use me brain. Time I got the HD app to do it, I'd have figured it out in my head!!
Just wondering if you even searched on Google? Because in less than 2 minutes i found these.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-tips-calculator-v1-0.html
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-tip-calculator-and-bill-splitter-1-0.html
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-simple-tip-calculator-v1-0.html

Or just the normal calculator...
Hmmm sounds like another excuse for iPhone owners to get their phone out and bore people stupid with how wonderful they think its is... the resturant as well as the pub now...
I'll stick to me head.... probably good but how difficault is 10%?

wow - you need a special application to calculate total bill x 1.1 / people? What's wrong with the calculator?
I knew iPhone users can't think for themselves but we're supposed to be the smart ones.

Some people are obviously very lazy...
there is an iphone app for absolutely everything , and most of it is pointless, like the spirit level which is actually just the gsensor calibrate screen on the touch hd , there may be apps but good quality apps is what matters so let them have there mass load of rubbish, once we get a few 3d games we'll be laughin
We have freekin excel in our pockets you can calculate almost anything!
F Me! You are a miserable bunch of b*stards
I think its a pretty good idea. There are plenty of people out there who do not know how to reprogram a WM phone. Sory I'll rephrase - not SAD enough to know how to reprogram a WM phone!
So a neat little app like the tipulator is probably quite appealing.
"Oh we can't have that *geeky chortle chortle* why can't you write a few formulae in MS pocket excel" - Jeez, give me strength!
If I went out for a meal with a group of people and someone used excel to calculate the split, I'd think they were a complete tosser, and tell them so.
But then most of you aren't old enough to go into a pub let alone go out for a meal and not have your parents pay for it.
So I'll "third" the proposal.
stop making waves!
of course i am not expecting from someone that is preaching us about laziness to bother and make a search so i did and found in less than 15 seconds this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=499829&highlight=tip+calculator
see, i used the search button and made the great effort of typing 2 words: tip calculator. well, i'll do anything for a little peace and order in this forum

Firstly if your asking for help then ask for it don't assault the people who could be programming this for you!
Secondly excel does exactly what you want it to do, if your too stupid to write a simple percentage calculation then your too thick to own a WM phone!
Thirdly I'm a comfortable programmer, I do it as part of my job, but I do have a life, I'm surrounded by good, intelligible friends, I enjoy power kiting and surfing, I probably have a much better life than you!
Fourthly if you think someone's a tosser for using a WM application (Excel) to calculate the tip then you MUST think they would be a tosser for using an identical application that someone's put on their device but with pretty pictures so rambling buttock scrapings like yourselve can use it without confusion!
Finally learn to use the search facillity it's really very simple, I also hear Google do these searches aswell!
So don't sign up to a developer forum calling all the developers misserable Bas*ards!
Don't retalliate with a barrage of insults when people try to help you!
And don't post without searching!
Oh yeh and I'm 22 more than old enough to drink in this country!

don't feed the troll! an undeserved effort to try and explain something to "his kind".
he doesn't know to use google and u are asking him to use excel??!! imagine asking him to make the calculation using his head....lol! another rude a..s hole!
did you guys miss my post in the previous page? I posted a bunch of tip programs.
I dont think anyone really wants a "tipulator" cos its useless. More useful would be the bill splitting thing that they showed on the iphone advert. I know its another thing from the iphone n stuff....but that is actually gd unlike half the apps from the apple store.
Has anyone got anything like that already? if yes then pls share with us!
What the major difference between WM and Iphone os..is that the WM is a computer..and Iphone is just a phone with alot of features..
It's two completely different things..and it seems that MS(prolly because they can't stand watching apple getting mo money then they R) with their new WPhone7 decided to abandon pocket computers and start to make phone only OS..and it's pretty disappointing.
personally I love WM platform because it is a pocket PC..not just a fancy phone with whole alot of things inside..and it seems it's over now..they just don't care about us(prolly because we to smart to pay for every lil thing so we're not really profitable)..
SMH.......thats the problem with windows mobile NOW! nomatter what you do, how much your phone can do...its NOT a computer.....windows mobile now is not a computer and nowhere near it, and microsoft has finally realized this as fact which is why they are moving n another direction....wm-ppc-are not PC'S
in fact you cant stand still on that idea... about not a PC but PPC ancient times when Windows CE comes to town everybody knows the OS a "Pocket" PC, cause it can handles: I sharing, desktop remote, exchnage in WM5, PDA features and... the most important thing as "windows is" the multitasks we knows and fell in love with WM due to that, and now many of that will dissapears... why? due to the NON File explorer and Windows features. The Development will be on two fronts now WP6.6 and WP7 will starts from zero again.

Ofcourse PPC is not a PC..but very close to it..
I think even if they wanna make the totally new os..they shouldnt abandon this one..for exemple Y not develop both of them..
XDA is the biggest internet community in this matter..and what i c the most..is disagreement with new MS politics..but since they(MS) just dont care bout it..they'll will lose some of their loyal clients..
But unfortunately..we don't have mush choice..since one or another of big brothers is gonna dictate their terms..n thats a bad thing about the monopoly..

You are in right OP.. Windows 7 is very ugly, and only reason why I like Pocket PC,bcs he is PC in small package...Last good windows been 6.0/6.1... After this Microsoft make serious ****s...Windows 6.1 dont have many things...But he is far away best OS for mobile devices.I used Iphone/Android,and after many testing Win 6.1 is REAL os with must to say....best multitasking.I like Start menu,I like `PC icons` and I like programs for 6.1...I dont want to use Win 7...Win 6.1 have many popular PC apllications, and have all what I ever will need.Windows 7 look like some ugly Iphone....(and yes,Windows is better os than Mac : )

ok, seems everyone hates win7 here... its not that bad.if the phone does its job, its good. i am buying a phone. I'm not going to develop a website on the phone. i have pc for that. but i can listen to music, surf the web, play a game, whatever. the problem with iPhone is that everyone has it. main reason i bought htc mobile. why not steal everything good from iPhone and windows and put it to good use :d
I dont hate WP7 nor loves it, only time will tell what its going to look like. But what i dont like about WP7 is how it is become more look like "others" -read overly simplified popular flashy gadget rather than techie stuffs. WinMo is vastly more advance but i guess being friendly and simple sells more than advance and complicated. Gotta love the iphone, hahahah it is so boring but for what it is, it serves well.
Well i still love WinMo.
WP7 sucks...
hi guys, let me tell you what is going to be the WP7... it is going to be a windows device with iPhone look-a-like in side- NO THANKS!!!
I personaly dont like where things are going for windows mobile, and I believe alot of loyal wm users will turn back on WP7.
Almost forgot... I cant bare loosing my multytasking...
WP7 compare to WM is a step backwards, not forward, that was a sick, profit driven decision made by Microsoft which gonna cost them dearly...

Actually PPC is much more PC than many of us believe.
I remember my first PC form 1994. It was poor Pentium I 66MHz with 16Mb RAM and 450Mb HDD.
Now my wife's Xperia has 528MHz CPU, some memory and a "pitiful" 4Gb storage SDHC. Also X1's 800x480 is almost as good as my first 800x600 CRT.
Which one is more PC? If compared per watt?
I'd like to see WP7 and WinMob multitask OS in parallel.
Hi, this is more of a opinion question than a 'question' question. Hopefully the great devs in the forum see this and find a way to port it. Please vote in the poll and if you have an opinion to say please write them. Just respect other members. Your opinions such as "why would you want a port?" Aren't really Nessecary.
Thanks
Most of your options don't make "sense", so I can't vote!
Whilst it may be possible to port WP7 to the Desire hardware, your first two poll options are to port WP7 to Android which is nonsensical!
Personally, from what I've seen of WP7 so far, there is nothing that makes me want to move away from Android at present, but that doesn't preclude it happening in the future. However, if I did want to move to WP7, I'd almost certainly buy a phone dedicated to it rather than attempt to cobble together something on an Android phone.
Regards,
Dave

even if it was possible, which it's NOT, none of the developers here would do it as its ILLEGAL, we dont own a LICENCE for wp7, it would be no diffrent to distributing PIRATE copy's of windows 7....
indeed, most of us here bought an android device because we wanted to customise our phones or because we got tired and annoyed with other OSes(especially WM, urg...!{yeah, I know I have the HD2, it pisses me off...=.="'}), but if there are any developers porting WP7, I'd like to see it emulated only.
Oh, I didn't know it was illegal. Guess no one would port it then. But maybe a good emulator would be nice. I wish I had bought a HD2 now...
Given that Windows Phone 7 is not Windows Mobile, it would probably technically be illegal to run it on an HD2 too, though since you'd have effectively paid some kind of licence fee to MS, they would be more likely to turn a blind eye I guess!
It's by no means certain that it would be any easier though!

Dave

that would be down to microsofts discretion, previously they havent made much of an issue out of us porting newer versions of windows mobile to, older windows mobile devices, and imo i dont think they would start now, ie porting wp7 to the HD2 ect.... but i cant see them sitting back and letting people port wp7 to a device with no microsoft licence all together. they didnt get to be the biggest company in the world by letting things like that slide
Why would you want to anyway?
Personally I don't even like the look of WP7 interface. Some nice features but it just looks a bit naff to me!
