I am very happy today... I have a solution - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

For the past few years, I have been contributing to MS for WM or CE development. I have been suffering from missing phone calls, slept in for work, losing files and important messages etc. I finally found a solution today and I am very happy with it.
I bought a SonyEricsson W880i, a light and slim phone. I can finally fit my phone in my pocket. Or even if I hang it on my neck, I don't have to worry that I will become a girraff. I can now listen to MP3 with a stereo headset.
If you want to be as happy as I am, please go to the mobile store today and look for a real phone.

I have got a real phone, it is called a Hermes. I can navigate around the world with it, use it any country, watch movies in top quality, surf the internet, etc, etc. There is much more available to use than on a candy bar. I have no problems with alarms, calls, lost files or messages. I think you have taken a backward step, but 'you pays your money you makes your choice', but what has this got to do with WM6?

What's this have to do with WM6.
Here I'm diligently reading the WM6 threads, and have to get my time wasted with something that should have been put in the general forum.

please provide basic review of functionality for newbie

HI,
I'm new to this forum and new to the phone, I've ordered mine.
Although I'm fairly tech savvy, I am a web developer, middle level technically proficient in VBA and so forth...
I ordered and decided on this phone because of the PDA, Organiser, pocket pc and of course the phone.. basically all that is advertised.
But i'm beginning to have serious and grave concerns.. can people of this forum enlighten me..
The importtant feature of this phone for me beside being a phone is:
1. can it competentnly and reliabley syn with outlook
2. is there any issues with Excel as I will be using quite a bit of this on the road...
I won't have time or inclination to mess wtih the code or add new stuff. as i need this phone for mission critical business needs and hence can't have it bneing unrealible...
i hope i havne't made the wrong decision to embrace technology (although I know some of the more complidcated features or nifty features may have isssues)....
is this phone worth while and does what it says it does? or have i wasted a lot money
It synchs brilliantly with Outlook (I'm synching at home with Outlook 2003 and at work with Outlook XP\Exchange), way better than any other smartphone - mainly symbian - that I've ever used.
The Excel is good (if not brilliant). It works as advertised. Whether it will be suitable for you depends on what you want to use it for. It doesn't contain all the functions of the full excel, though it always surprises me just how many of the more obscure functions it does contain (PMT is the most important function I use, and is included). However, if you are looking to use Excel for graphs and charts etc, then you are going to be disappointed.
Anyway, if you've ordered it, you usually get a 14 day cooling off period during which you can return for a full refund.
Excel isn't bad, but if you're working on advanced spreadsheets then you should definitely look at PlanMaker from Softmaker.de. This is a simply stunning package that is what Excel should be...
Cheers,
nick.
thanks for the review.. one other thing.. noise when hangs u
i've heard from other users that there is a notceable and unpleasant tone when it hangs up..
man.. the amount of issues that is raised, itrs so bloody scary, can this phone still be used as a phone?
some have raised issues of not receiving even a call or an sms...
this wholly defeatst he purpose of this device entirely!!
can people comment? under what circumstances does it not work, are many people messing with the phone with installing new software or what?
Well I am a heavy user of my XDAII. I use it for txt, voice call, excell, powerpoint, word, acrobat, games, and too much of the Windows Media.
I compressed the Video Karaoke VCD's or DVD's to my SD. I always sync with avantgo. I use Internet Explorer to view or approve transactions in our Office Linux Web based ERP solution wirelessly via bluetooth.
I still recieve my messages and calls so don't worry. But remeber, be a smart user. Since this is a Windows platform, you have to Soft Reset after openning a lot of applications or install the Omega One Battery Pack Software to end unwanted or running applications so that you do not have to perform a soft reset.
I hanged up 2x in my early experience with this device because I used up most of the internal memory. I learned my lesson now that all apps must be installed in the external memory.
I always made sure that I have 60 mb free of internal memory so that it will not hang anymore. This 60 mb free serves as the working memory of my running programs or apps.
Hope this info will be useful to you.

I have 2 XDAII, 1 for me and 1 for my wife. We are both heavy users and so far no problems.
Are we just lucky or what?
Another thing if you only want a phone then this device is not for you. The XDA is an overkill if you only intend to use it as a phone.
For me I treat my XDA more as a Portable Personal Computer (Pocket PC) that happens to have a cellular phone capability.
Additional comments. If you are a comfortable user of Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP and understand the Operating System very much, then the XDAs is for you.
If you hate Windows and prefer Linux or Mac OS then you better use Palm Treo, Sony Ericcson P900 or 910i., or other Symbian OS.
Windows Mobile based Smartphones or PDA phones to me are for advance users who understand the system very much. Otherwise you will keep on complaining that it is hanging, crashing, slowing down, etc.
My wife also give me these problems before so I have to teach or train her how to understand the Windows System. Now she is on the advance type of user and does not give me headaches anymore.
Personally I have tried the Nokias, the Sony Ericssons, and the Treos. I was never satisfied by those devices as the applications were limited based on my usage and other interface in the office. I have to use 3rd party solutions just to make them work. Some of them specially the Nokias simply won't work.
In fact I work with Sharp and our Linux based PDA takes a lot of tweaking to work with our system and it has no GSM phone capability. So Sharp decided to switch to Windows platform so that Zaurus will sell.
Personally I will not exchange my XDA II or any Windows Platform PDAphones to other devices.
My XDAII easily integrated with our system without any 3rd party solutions. Remember we are using Linux in the office and the XDA II is connected to the system via bluetooth.
I have to agree with rayt, there are enough people around (myself included) who are using these devices day in day out without any problems (other than the occasional, well documented, bluetooth glitch) to show that the device is fine.
I really do struggle to understand the mentality of some of the people on this forum who have spent weeks and weeks complaining about how awful their devices are.
All they have to do is perform a hard reset and use the device for a couple of days in a clean state. If it doesn't crash anymore, then the problem was third party software or how it was set up. If the problem persists, it's a faulty unit and should be returned for a replacement. It's that simple. It's almost as if they enjoy being a victim!

Thank you! If your bluetooth glitch is hotsync or internet pass through, I made a solution for this. Go to this link at, http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=13387&highlight=.
I made a detailed instruction for the bluetooth. In fact my XDA is a virgin, meaning the OS is a factory original with 1.66.00WWE.
I dropped my XDA on the concrete floor 5 times already by accident so far no hang-ups except for external housing scratches.

Yes, thanks oh so much for all your comments and tips and tricks,
I'd appreciate anyone posting to give some advice on how to use this,
so as i understand, install only programs on external memory,
keep it clean, don't mess about too often and use soft reset or download a software as one suggested....
I was beginning to feel very worried, that htis is some large rip off given its a huge pie in the sky ask for a company to put together what everybody is now thinking.. convering pda, phone, pc.... i know they are trying to break grounds, but heck, the stories we here on this forum,
its like its a unmerchanable product.. and a class lawsuit should be preppared....
keep the tips going
if you know how to use desktop windows xp then you should automatically know how to use the xda II and as far as keeping it clean is concerned if you wanna really keep it clean then you should buy a sd or mmc memory chip and install your programs on that so that your pda remains with full memory and does not get slowed down and stuff....

It is not an unmerchanable product! And a lawsuit must not be abused and unnecessary.
I have to remind that the product is not for everybody and I have to repeat again that it is intended for advanced users, Techie, or IT literate people.
You said that you were a web developer and in VBA. Now I want to ask you a question, can you name any Phone other than Windows powered that can run your VBA scripts? If there are any I will be glad to try them again.
I am not a loyal Microsoft User or Developer as I am also into Unix, Linux, and Mac OS. It only happened that my XDA solved my problems in the office without any 3rd party applications or tweaking.
I think this discussion is going somewhere else like what the EU government is doing to Windows. They sued MS because of the many funtionality and usefullness of windows like the antitrust case in the US.
Now tell me are you willing to buy the Windows Reduced Media Functionality because of what the government said so or are you willing to stand or go for a System that is complete and inovative at athe same price?
If you don't like it return it and don't insist on it. Buy another PDAPHONE device with a different platform like Symbian, Linux, or Palm OS and try your applications. Only then you will know that the Windows Platform is the right choice and is not a ripoff.
I sold my Nokias, Sony Ericcsons, and Treos as they did not work or fit for our systems in and outside the office.
The last 3 phones can't even perform my Hobbies done in VBA. These hobbies are satellite tracking, planet tracking, astronomy, and anything related to the solar system. These hobies run on my XDAs and my XDA tells me the weather conditin 5 days in advance.

The best communication device in the world?

I purchased a TyTN (T-Mobile Vario II) around six months ago and I was pretty pleased with it. It wasn't perfect (for example, I couldn't re-connect to the Internet without a soft reset) but it was pretty good.
After a lot of hesitation, I upgraded the radio (1.41) and OS (Black 2.5) about a month ago. A couple of days ago I upgraded the OS to Black Shadow. Tonight I added the SMS "fix".
I now believe that I have the best communication device in the world. Seriously. It's wonderful. The functionality is outstanding. I can do almost anything I could possibly want to do with a phone/PDA. E-mail, texting, surfing, phoning, Skyping, gaming, voice recording, reading (Word, PDF), presenting (PowerPoint), photography etc. Did I mention Internet sharing? I can now connect my laptop to the 'Net from almost anywhere in the world.
The only drawbacks that I can see are that it looks a bit like a brick (only because it has a full QWERTY keyboard - which I love), the battery only lasts one day at a time, and it can be a little sluggish at times.
Nothing else comes close and whenever I look for something better I always come away seriously disappointed - and that will include the iPhone when it comes out. We're probably using iPhone v2 (3G, programmable, video calling, Internet sharing, Office compatible, etc.) right now.

Here here!
Enough people ***** about their phones in these forums. I for one am glad to hear a success story once in a while.
I think it's a great phone, perhaps the best of the last generation, but there are new toys coming out that show incremental improvements in the technology.
But it's the programmers and hackers that really make Windows Mobile devices fly!
And, re "The best communication device in the world?", surely this is the wife's evil glare? Never fails to get the message over to me, tout suite

Else I will never get to replace a new one every few months!
Yes, it's a great phone!
...but we still need to file that original post under "NooB-gasm"!
Perhaps we could start a special "H-TaCy" thread for these posts.
Just kidding.
You know, in this day and age with so many Prematurely-released feature-rich gadgets, the marketing teams usually win the consumers over and poor tech support kills all the hope of the devices reaching their potential. I've been had by ASUS a few times on PDAs/phones.
It's really nice to have a great group of people like we find here (who are putting in all the grunt work) who can help us GET OUR MONEY'S WORTH (SO RARE THESE DAYS!!), especially on the language-change issues!
_My_ thanks goes out to HTC for making good products and to the FOLKS HERE for making it great! It's quite possible he sort of meant the same thing. When the vibrator stops working, he may one day realize this.

Lol... be nice guys.
I have to say I was quietly smiling to myself when I heard about the Iphone's 3rd party development support - through Safari widgets. Yippee
I've said it before and I'll say it again - the Windows Mobile phones are great because people like the endless genii on this board make them great and customise the hell out of them.
HTC makes nice hardware, and the two together work well. Many OEMs make nice hardware now, look at the Japanese only devices for true innovation. But, Hermes is a nice, stable device. Shame about the GPS, it would have been near perfect (for its generation).
V
Perfect without GPS
Perfect? Well.... Well if it was faster, had 128 MB of storage. Had room for SD and MicroSD (4GB please) and if it had GPS, maybe it would be approaching perfect.
Now Heather Graham is perfect! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001287/
May I have a cookie too?

I agree with some of this... ample RAM and an 800Mhz CPU would suit me. Add GPS and a 5MP camera and it would be my perfect device.
Ohh yeah and a mini projector built into the top of the phone so I could aim it at a wall and project my films so I had a larger view!
I would like the top projector on the device to project on air rather than the wall as well as would like TyTn to perform as a new "surface" where u can just put any bar coded device on its screen and have all the contents sorted out...plus I would also like it to work as a fax and also GPS and so the list goes on and on...
In reality, I use it only for the voice calling and nothing else... and for that my nokia 3100 was perfect with 7 days plus battery life....
Sorry for the rant...

EDIT: oh, and I want my money back too...the title of this thread is absolutely 100% untrue, in my case anway
Well, I think it's fantastic you got a phone you enjoy using! Everyone should enjoy using their device. However, this begs the question: Why are you posting in the Rhodium section about how much you hate the phone, when this section is mostly (if not completely) filled with people who like their Rhodiums and like Windows Mobile? It's great you got a device you enjoy, but why are you telling the people who like their Rhodiums?
Just because you didn't have a good experience with the device, and didn't like it, doesn't mean the rest of us feel the same way. Most of the people who bought the Rhodium bought it because they like Windows Mobile, they like the form factor, they like something else about the device, or they don't really care at all. For a poor, suffering Rhodium user who must bear the pains of owning such an awful device, I can say that I'm actually quite happy with it

ROTFLMFAO!!!!
I had the Moto Cliq AND the Samsung Behold 2...both droid based phones, both sucked ass...I went running back to WinMo and am so happy I did. I can go a few days without charging my device...both droid phones I had to charge LITERALLY every 4-5 hours!! I can customize my device, tweak the hell out of it, and if I so choose, run a cooked rom made to my liking...not so with the Cliq or Behold 2 (not saying it won't be able to happen, but back in November, hell no). I too am quite happy, thrilled really, with the horrible device known as the Rhodium!! I guess what they say is true...ignorance is bliss.
BTW, the troll got its ass handed to him when he challenged the 3 billy goats gruff.
My daughter has the Cliq after the G1, and I also have the 3G Hero before buying the Nexus. I went through 2 Nexus and they are identical despite what the tech told me - the speaker blows, I missed more calls with the N1, and the speakerphone is hopelessly poor. I would have loved it but every chance I get I go back to my Tilt 2, especially when I need to sync notes & tasks from outlook.
Having said that, I am somewhat concerned with the HD2 as the HW is quite similar, I can deal with pink center spot from the cam, but the speaker/ringtone level is important to me....
dislike. someone can lock thread. i will admit that there is something to android. and as android dual booting improves i may have it as my primary os on the phone. but as for the hardware, nothing seems to beat my rhodium. i look forward to rhodium android but i wont switch for a nexus one.
I once said "windows mobile sucks" and quickly ditched my mda and scooped up an iphone...i got rid of that crap within two weeks ( no multi-tasking, editing of documents ect).
after trading the iphone on craigslist for a g1, I soon realized android needed some serious growing up to do ( no intergrated exchange support at the time, no editing of documents). I then found myself digging my mda out of the drawer and sliding my sim card back into its warm and familiar slot...
sure, wmo has its quirks, bugs, and annoyances, but living without the wmo goodness is something I shall not do again...
p.s. I'm not forced to use an app store or market place to correct those pesky quirks, bugs, and annoyances either...
What's crazy is that I would hit so many nerves win his thread. Last I knew this was an poen forum. I liked my Rhodium, but there came a time when I could not ignore the fact that the base OS is old as HELL!!!
That said, don't get angry guys, this thread is for those thinking of switching. With so many of you, dedicated and adamant, I am sure they wont be missed. And you may say what you wish, but there comes time where we must become productive, with our phone being a tool, than being a productive tool for our phone. Come on guys? You posted in a forum full of 'above-and-beyond' winmo users, with acrimonious tone about how you think the OS is horrible for everybody, not just incompatible with your personal needs....and you're surprised to have gotten some charged responses...?? I think the protestants tried that with the catholics once, might want to ask them how that went, before they all realized there was plenty of room here for everybody's preferences, without having to disparage others' *ahem*
I'm guessing you also probably believe you're actually getting that 4MB+ downlink speed on your 3G that you've proudly posted there
Do me a favor, and you have to be honest. Come back in a month and list all of the problems you have had with your new phone along with a list of the problems you had with the Rhodium. Also, list the pros and cons for your new device and the Rhodium. If you're going to renounce the Rhodium (much less in a Rhodium forum) and want to convice others to do the same, at least have some info/data to back it up.
rename the thread atleast. Wasted time waiting to load this thread to read crap i dont care to read. Stupid
Can you list some specific pros and cons?
A Windows Mobile phone is only as useful, or useless, as its owner.

You dont tinker with your NEXUS? Really?... You dont go through the Android App Store looking for apps that might be cool and useful?
Are you really trying to persuade someone to switch phones? Why do you care? I mean really... what would it benefit you if even one person agreed with you enough to switch phones?
Your just trying to get a rise out of readers here. Be honest... I dont fault you for it... as long as your honest about it.

Really there's nothing to talk about until Mango and the new devices that will bring. Everything has been said already, the same arguments have exploded again and again. It's just a waiting game now.
I used to be more active in the Captivate section ... But it was because there was always the hope that something would come out that would fix the lag, GPS etc. Fortunately with my Focus, everything just works. It's kinda nice haha.
Yep. Patiently waiting for Mango.
Nice to not be alone being satisfied with WP7. I am only waiting for my carrier contract to end so i can switch and let the call issuess drop. I love my Omnia 7, i really do, its the best phone i have to date (Used HD2 and was happy then). But the Edge problem with Samsung Phones in generall is a annoyence.
Still i come here to hope for some small things. I still want my flashligt 8Camera led) app like HTC without hacking.
Used to hack phones a lot before, but with WP7 it´s not that importent.

This thread just sums it up. Everything on WP7 just works. It's so fluid it doesn't need to be tweaked. Everyone waiting patiently for Mango ;-)
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I wholeheartedly agree WP7 does almost everything I need my smartphone to do but it will not play audio books. I have them on my phone but I cannot save my spot. It treats an audio book like a mp3. I tried treating it as a podcast but Zune then fails to see it. I am stuck using my damn Nano.
This is a big missing item for me. Combine that with the lack of vendor support and I am getting frustrated. No audible application. No HBOGo application. No LogMeIn ignition. I even boycotted audible and told them they lost a customer of over 5 years until they step up and get my my WP7 app. No luck so far...
It seems WP7 is still not considered a player and that is very frustrating because overall this phone rocks!

There's an app for playing audio books that supports bookmarks. It's called Audio Bookmark if I recall correctly. There's definitely a thread about it here on XDA.
[Edit]
Found the thread about it: clicky

I won't give up hope that there'll be an update through Zune or some sort of ROM for officially developer unlocked devices. If not, heck, I'll have to wait for the official release. Either way, I'm looking forward to it.
i'm saving all my rants until mango gets its first delay.
i'm saving my rants until mango doesn't fix notifications.
Isn't it Great!!!!
Yes, the naysayers, doom sayers "it's not my old WM6.5 whiners" and "WP7 is a fail" sayers are gone. I really miss the latter, they were comic abusers of the English language. I challenged all of them to return after Mango and apologize for wasting space here and wasting our time with their frustrated, comical rants. They are gone because the news is universally good relative to WP7. Aquisitions, alliances, features etc. have all been good and in fact, much better than any of us had dreamed. It will turn out that WP7 is an OS and UI to reckon with. I am very pleased with my Focus and was one of those WM 6.5 tweakers and flashers who initially thought I missed all of that wasted time spent waiting for a new ROM to flash. No need anymore and don't want to be there ever again.

You may want to look at Overdrive. It's Audio books from your library. I just installed it yesterday and looking for my library card to check out my first Audio book.
Thanks Guys.
Unfortunately Audiobookmark and Overdrive both only support mp3 formats.
Although I am glad to see Overdrive is now available - it is still not really useful until they implement WMA support. Almost all the audiobooks I checked out and are interested in are in WMA format, aaaaaaargh.
I did find a very kludgey workaround. I load the book onto my iPod. I then pull it off using iDump which gets it on my computer in a m4b format. I change the file tag genre to "Podcast" and then add it into Zune.
That finally gave me the ability to listen to my audiobooks as podcasts which allows me to use bookmarks in an audiobook checked out from Overdrive. A bit of work. Not sure if it is worth it to not use my old iPod.
Its quiet because there is literally nothing going on with WP7 right now. Nothing.
Until mango. When it gets here, there will be a burst of threads and new arguments.

Well currently there is absolutely nothing to talk about isn't it? It's still the same crippled OS with no Marketplace for most countries, no native letters and proper maps for most either, until Mango comes this fall - easily 4 months away. Plus not even one more new phone since launch. No customizations either. So what to talk about?
The user base here is pretty much limited to people who just "patiently wait" for upgrade. Those who didn't want to compromise their usage already switched to something else.
I am really curious what will be WP7 situation after Mango with unstoppable wave of Android and new iPhone. Really really curious how Nokia/WP7 will appear because honestly all other OEMs didn't REALLY meet my expectations.
So summing this up: exiting times ARE ABOUT to come, so it's hard to repeat endlessly future plans here.

One new phone then (HTC 7 Pro) the others being existing phones ported to new carriers. He's right about the rest.

KaiOS fourm?

I recently discovered KaiOS phones and I a love the SIMPLICITY of such a striped down phone as my every day walking around phone. This may put me in the same annoying camp as those hipsters that ride fixie bikes but, I just hate how the main-stream smart phone ecosystem is just designed to glue people to them so they can never get off them for a whole minute and see the world around them. I would still keep a smartphone (with an aftermarket ROM) around that I can use it on WiFi or I can swap-out my sim card into it, but would love just to use my KaiOS phone daily text and talking.
Is there already a forum here that I missed to discuss KaiOS phones? If not, are there plans to make a forum on XDA for it?

Did you find any. I would like to participate in your forum of KaiOS.
Too bad there is no KaiOS thing yes. I wanted to see if I could run it over a feature phone that came about the same time as KaiOS.
I saw apps, and KaiOS seem fine, of a use. So far the KaiOS' shop has much better applications, that cover more needs, and are relevant.
By the quality of its apps, it stands out. And they're all slow and clever....but well.....I think a forum is needed. It's been some time I use a feature phone for security, ecology, minimalism, ease-of-carrying etc....but well I wonder if KaiOs could be ran, it looks like some people are able but I am not sure.
Does anyone knows if you can play videos on browser on kaios phones?Because i don't want that to be possible!
