Hi all,
I currently have a xda mini and is looking forward to upgrade to either an artemis or the hermes. I really want the artemis because of the gps reciever but the problem is that im currently living in china. are there gps maps available for china? if not, would it be possible for me to make my own map? how hard is it for me to make my own map? how much time would it take to make my own map?

Mapking has some Chinese city maps.

I guess Mapking is your only option. To make a map would take a huge amount of time and effort.
By the way, I used Mapking recently and it worked well.

Hi, Just recieved an XDA Orbit and i'm wondering which GPS software you think works best on the device. Now i know that most people think that TomTom is the best GPS software but i'm looking for something that works well on the orbit.
I need the GPS software to be able to support postcodes!
So the ones i can think of are:
TomTom 6
Co-poilot
Desinator
Any others? Whats do you think works best.
BTW: I'm in the UK if that makes any difference.
Tom Tom 5
I am using TTN5 and I find it excellent. I have used the TomTom range from the old Routeplanner days and the early versions were flawed, but TTN3 and 5 got their act together and maps were updated. TTN6 did not add any revolutionary functionality and TomTom didn't offer an upgrade price so I have stuck with TTN5 and a subscription to Pocket GPS World to get updated camera and POI downloads.
I use TomTom 6 and in my opinion, its the best out there. Co-Pilot is really good too, got that free with the phone - but just prefer the TTN6.
TT6 works well
Destinator PN also
Destinator 6.1.1 sucks on Orbit/MdaIIIc, losing GPS and freezes
other gps software not tested
I use Route66 on my Orbit. Drove 850 miles each way from Boston to Dayton, OH without a hitch. As a matter of fact, it saved me at one point when I was having car problems. Used it to find the nearest Hotel's in the area.
Hi,
I use both TOM TOM 6 and Memory Map, both of which work very well.
Regards
Last I checked iGuidance was incompatible.
I use TT6 works really well, my only problem is that maps are 95% uptodate, which is fine most of the time, but I find in London it doesn't know if a street is now one way, or its now a bus lane, or you cant turn left on Euston Road and have to go into congestion zone and then forget to pay and have to pay the £50 fine
Hello!
Reading such comments make me feel sad...oh lord!
Navigation programs are meant to support you on the road so you don't have to spread a roadmap across your steering wheel and being distracted from traffic, not to replace your eyes, ears and most of all your brain.
Could'nt resist had to say that.
...bye
I have TT 6.2 {7130} and IGO 2006. Works fine.

I use Destinator 6.1 with Iberia map (when I'm in the mainland, no Madeira maps yet ) and it works OK.
It captures GPS signal almost instantly and it's quite accurate regarding positioning.
Regards,
Have used TTN5 & TTN6 I prefer TTN5 as it is simple and quick to use. It would be perfect if the maps were spot on but close enough to keep me happy.
May have to use TTN6 when new London congestion charge comes in but its the one I would recommend.
Hello
I want to know which software is the better for the GPS of this xda, actually the only software that works with this is the TomTom, but no maps are available to my country. What do you recommend?
Thanks in advance
diegogerx1
you should tell us your country first otherwise it makes no sense
i've got igo working perfectly on mine!
You can use every navigation software which is available. In a first step you should check if your country in included. In which country you are living???
i agree every satnav software should work.............. then it just boils down to the availability of the maps you are needing, regards
Hello I tried the Tomtom and works fine, the problem is that I cannot save POI and routes without maps of my country (My country is Colombia). I tried also Pathaway and don't works I don't know the reason, I configured the port COM4 and speed 4800 bauds
Thanks for your help`

Whilst all of the WM5 GPS software will work you might have problems getting maps for the main stream navigation apps. Something like Ozieexplorer might be easier to set up as you can use your own scanned maps. This would not give you routeing instructions however.
i have been wondering about which software is better for Nav. and real GPS locations. ROute 66 (which by the site, they say Dash is not compadible) or CoPilot? is it worth buying the receiver they offer, or any others in particular? thanks!
The 2 free apps, Google mobile and Windows Live Search, both work well. Google is bit harder to make work because you need to mess with the registry to make the port available. But either one does a good job. WHat you wont get with these freebies is turn by turn spoken directions.
I use Live Search on my Dash with a Globalsat BT GPS receiver. Works great.

ok, cool.. thanks for the info.. what is the difference between the google maps just using your phone wi-fi and have a gps reciever? do you just get real time of a location?
what about using maps? i have route66 u.s.a maps but no software though! is there a way to load just the maps and use it with Live or Google?
i have the software but no maps!!! We need to trade
i dont even know how load the maps (if possible) without the software..
Hi all, I've been looking for an alternative to tom tom, preferably one with updated maps that don't require you to buy a dedicated unit because for some reason they are not realising a a new wm client...which the new maps require...
So I got garmin mobile xt, loaded it on my phone, with 2008 europe map, and first of all I was disapointed that some things like new housing estates that have been there for the past 2 years are not on these maps, although theres some more roads than teh tomtom ones i noticed, also, its painfully slow, I haven't actually tried using it as a navigation system yet as I find it annoyingly slow just browsing the map, even the menu's seem slow, the detail is amazing that it gives you, but it just seems tooo slow, I'm using battery status, tried overclocking it, but it makes no difference.
I'm wondering if the fact its one huge map (1.4gig) is a problem, or if its jsut the software, I'm subscribed to garmin for updates, and regulary checking the website for updated versions, but no such luck as of yet, I would love to use this app, But just find it to frustrating at the moment, I've also read that the garmin calculates routes much more suitabably than tomtom, and the multidrop function is also quite good, which is the only reason I looked at the garmin unit.
Also anyone here use co-pilot 7? I've been thinking about buying this if the maps are better than tomtom, and if its as comfortable to use as tomtom
iGo is quite good... not sure what the German maps are like. http://www.i-go.com its specifically made for PPCs.
Hello,
I have an ATT 8525 and a little usb HOLUX GPS reciver. It seems to work with a little demo app that shows # of satelites, srenght, etc. But, I can't find any street navigationn software to go with it.
I thought I had head of people rrunning TomTom or Garmin on these things but I have not found any software through any channels. All I want is the funtionality of the cheapest TomTom.
Does any body have aby ideas on software a a GPS (Holux) enabled 8125
Thanks PK
If you have an unlimited data plan, you could try google maps. It's not fully like tom tom, but quite usable for navigation.
Thanks.
I unfortunatly do not have the unlimited data plan. I' look into it but I think it was mmore han my DSL.
I had it in my head you could use a pocket pc version or somthing. I had a TomTom stolen 2 weeks after I got it. I like to consolidate everything into one device.
Thanks again. PK
Yup there is a pocket pc version floating around out there. If you keep searching, you'll find it.
And that works eh? I've seen it from specific phones, but not anything univeral sounding. I found a post here about someone having lots of trouble with tomtom.
Mentioned as good was a nav. program called (among other things) "I go8" wich looks o.k., even has "tyne " listed as compatible. Can't find a price for it though.
Thanks again
I use tomtom 7 on my 8525 with an Holux gps receiver and it works perfectly
Thanks, I'd prefer tomtom. Is it just a pocket PC version you used?
PK
I prefer using iGuidance. It's great, a lot faster load times, and it also tells you what side your destination is on....
But they're commercial softwares, so you have to purchase it.
Any other way is illegal, and should not be posted on here, from what I remember, xda-developers doesn't support Pirated software.
Cheers!
Thanks my friend, I look into it. Have to admit I never heard of it...but who am I. As long as they have US maps, I game.
Regards, PK
Quick edit: Went to there site, they have a demo ride....navigating through my proverbial back yard. Answeres one question...
I'm looking for a software with italian maps. Tomtom is quite "heavy" for my 8525. Anyone knows any other software?
Have a look at I-Go8. Very eurocentric and designed for phones and the like. I don't think they even make a box.
