Lack of Smartphone Support??? - HTC Excalibur

Am I just not finding it or what? When I had a Treo 700w (Pocket PC) I could find free themes and useful software all day with out a problem. Now on my old T-Mobile SDA and my current Dash I am hard pressed to find software and Home Screens for the Smartphone Edition. Either they aren't free or they do not display properly (especially now on the landscaped Dash). In some cases they don't even function properly. It seems that even the paid home screens are just plugins and you have to do your own xml. If you know of a good site for decent, and functioning home screens and software (paid or free), can you please let me know? Google can't even seem to help me with this one...

ALL info's you need are in this forum. I understand reading english sometime is difficult but...
Resume and easy start
Plugins
Facade is a good organizer software, fizz weather is good too if you ride a motorcicle to go to your office everyday... home screen is something complex in smartphone world
Background image
could be a simple nice picture or also a template were some plug in fit (as an example if you want a box were messages, e-mail, missed calls are shown you have to design it in the background image and insert x,y, wide, info's in \Application data\Home\xxxxxxxx.home.xml to have all shown inside.)
If you change the background picture also the BOX disapper
Software and plug-in
Any software showing something usefull has it own home screen plugin.
Add plugin info's inside the \Application data\Home\xxxxxxxx.home.xml file (as shown in SW manual or shown in xxxxxx.home.xml example provided with the software ) to have it in the home screen
THE PROBLEM begins if you have more than a single plugin to show, and you want to have a PERSONAL home screen, or if you own a LANDSCAPE phone, like S620 or MOTO Q
you can find here a good tutorial
http://www.modaco.com/Tutorial_Creating_XML_homescreens-t233425.html#

Thanks for Sergiopi's answer. I have been with pocketpc version WM5/ 2003/2003 for too many years. This is the first smartphone I got and I am frustrated tweaking it too. Many friends of mine from PPC to excalibur as well and I think smartphone is a nightmare for them too.

well for themes u can visit http://ekopapers.com and for other app u can chq out www.freewebs.com

Weather app?

Hi i was hoping that somebody could make a weather app that could use the weather from this site http://www.yr.no. Its a norwegian site but the weather data can be translated to english.
Alternatly is there a way to get this data into HTC Home?
btw here is a link to a page that gives the links to use for the xml file. http://www.yr.no/verdata/1.3316805
I would try SPB Traveler
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/traveler/?en
It has the option to insert different weather sources. I haven't used the feature so I'm not sure if that site you want to use will work. Have a read in the Traveler forums though, maybe they can help:
http://www.spbclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=60
The app is great, very customisable and can have lots of cities on the Today screen at once, I have 8 All with the local times and weather at the same time!
Thanx will give it a go
WeatherPanel
I personally found that weather is the most configurable tool, but you can't map to a specific site, the only draw back. I've used it all through Sweden and there wasn't a city that did not work. This program is free and you can configure it to look and fit any size screen. Works great with spb mobile shell, to help save valuable screen space. You can also add different radars of your local area if you have a local website that updates them. You can even put web cams of traffic in your set up. The other draw back is you need to do some manual set up with the program, skins and Icons but is well worth it. I like it so much that I've disabled HTC Home weather. With this Skin I'm able to do all the functions without using a stylus and only a thumb....
Yeah, seconding WeatherPanel with PhatPhinger. It's absolutely incredible, I use it inside of Spb Pocket Plus (Mobile Shell is a real resource hog with a lot of borderline-worthless features) on my Titan/Mogul and I have been met with great success.

I found the same thing with memory hogging with spb mobile shell, however: once I took the spb mobile file out of startup (no more memory hogging) I just use the shell. I've also us cLaunch to launch all applications, settings and tools.
Well i could not figure out how to include a xml file i spb traveler. So my inityial question still remains. Is there anyone that could make or know of a prog that will fufill my needs?

New "Activated" Winterface version

Hello all!
For quite some time, I've been playing around with different interfases, looking for the one that would best fit my needs.
A few may have skipped my net, but I've been through WAD, Pointui, Ifonz, Winterface, etc etc, and believe me, etc etc etc
None of them seem to be the "all inclusive" I needed until after many weeks, decided to stick to Winterface, primarily, thanks to the work of davehutch and oscarbum with their Stickerface and Tenius themes which made Winterface a bit more palatable.
Yesterday I came across an article at mobility site which spoke about a Winterface version for the i-mate (http://mobilitysite.com/2008/12/vito-powers-i-mate-go/).
In a nutshell, it's a new Winterface version made for the i-mate, but here's the thing:
1) It's a 100% free version (aka, activated)
2) From what I've seen, it works on any wm5 and wm6 device
Why bother? Ok... Here's why: I understand that the "black" themes are having their moment, but the truth is they are unreadable in daylight conditions. And as crazy as it may sound, I use my phone outdoors.
So this version has BIG chunky icons on a white background which makes it very easy to read and see with all the Winterface benefits.
I'm sure the likes of oscarbum and davehutch can come up with some new icons, but this is the refreshing change I've been after some time.
Enjoy and let me know how you went with it.
** Added the cab for your reference **
fantastic, I never liked the small buttons of winterface when using my mda compact iv, it was too difficult to get them to work since the screen is quite small for a vga device.
works great, I can't thank you enough
Hey, no problems. I'm glad to start contributing for a change!
hey man thanks for putting up the .cab file (been looking all over for this) but do you know if it'll do fine on a QVGA or VGA
Works fine on QVGA, even works on WM2003.
Only caveat with this version is it's not full screen and it is so easy to close Winterface by accident. I raised this with Vito and was advised to upgrade to the newer version.
That said I have tried to live with it but have ended up going back to a modded SPB MobileShell as it shows more on my home page.
How can you make this 'today-app' be the one always shown if you start instead of TouchFlo?
I have the Touch HD/Blackstone
/edit
nvm.
Someone told me that it's not a today-app xD
So it won't be a home screen for me.
Default Today Screen??
Is there a way to make this interface the default today screen, I keep accidentally closing the program

[IDEA - REQ] D-Pad and VGA-fix in one program

My idea is to make a program that acts like WVGA-fix, that is, reducing the display area ( by 160 pixels in height) in order to make VGA applications compatible AND, at the same time, using the space gained at the bottom for a virtual D-Pad.
That would make many 3D games compatible and playable (becuase of the D-Pad) but also applications like Realcalculator or the SPB suite.
Does anyone want to do this? I'd donate at least 20 bucks and I guess there are lots of other people who would appreciate a solution like this.
Nice idea, but what's the point in the WVGA screen then? Might as well get a Diamond!
also thought about that. tgere is someone working on it. search for the d-pad sip thread.
the idea is to program an emulator, wich opens applications in a 640x480px Frame this way its simulates a VGA screen. the 160px left can be used for virtual D-Pad. when pressing a button on the virtual D-Pad, the direction has to be send to the frame - to the application / game.

If you want to go as far as having an on screen virtual keypad with the OS running at a lower resolution to accommodate it, I imagine this would need to be done through a replacement screen driver much like NYDITOT. If you've ever used NVD, you should know what I mean. They use a generic replacement for the screen/display/keyboard driver that then allows the OS display to be run at any resolution and then scrolled.
But since it replaces the entire screen driver (ddi.dll) with it's own generic version, this method is also a performance hit for more graphical apps like games. If someone can figure out something better and easier, go for it. I imagine you would only need to hack with the touch driver if you wanted an invisible on-screen dpad or something.
And it should look like this http://upload.csrune.com/files/dpadsip669.PNG ;-)
It's just another keyboard...
Hello, sorry to unburry this topic, but I consider the concept is of premium importance.
First of all, I think it should have nothing to do with resizing the screen, as it would just complicate the process and slow down the programs...
Games and other software using the HD's missing pad are generally already VGA (if not QVGA) sized (considering recent WVGA games can use the touchscreen or the accelerometer), so they already display black unused sections on the screen (and by the way, a lot of useful apps, such as WVGAFix or Hou Ming's Force Hires already manage the lost margin and/or resize QVGA to VGA).
So it should only be about using this otherwise spilled and already existing dead zone to display a pad.
There are tons of applications for such a pad, and not only games !
Just browsing through directories can just be so painful without a pad, as Windows Mobile massively relies on its presence.
For instance, you have nice thumbnails showing when you parse pictures, but they are rendered useless, as you can't browse through them ! As soon as you select the next one with stylus or finger, it pops opened (well, popping isn't really the appropriate word, if you consider how slow the process is )
Then the best way to browse a directory, is to open the SIP keyboard, but of course, not the Microsoft one, as it has no arrow keys (remember : Windows assumes a pad is present) : you have to open this nice, but oversized HTC one, you know, the one that has arrows, but no Ctrl key, and therefore is unable to copy and paste !...
As keyboard arrows do work in any situation, I really, really think we all lack a simple 4 direction pad (plus "action" button, the other four classical buttons being physically present, phew) that would take no room on the screen, and help us browsing files and menus, or playing games.
The virtual pad should be available in the keyboards and other input devices list, exactly the same way the others are.
Ideally, we could imagine a tiny one that would overlap the central button and take no room on the screen, but just occupy about half an inch in the center of the lower bar, plus the usual SIP input choice arrow, in order we can still change keyboards at will.
For older VGA ou QVGA games, a larger and more finger friendly version could be imagined, either just a thick line of buttons, or why not, a larger pad, as shown on Wolfenzi's nice picture.
Just consider that a lot of virtual keyboards are available, so It doesn't seem to be something impossible to do !
It would be just another keyboard, just having only 5 keys, and nothing else !!!
I actually really can't figure out why nobody seems to be interested by such a simple yet useful idea...
Oh, and as Maati, I'm ready to remunerate anyone who'd do the effort, too.

Well, not as I see it, and support the need for such a utility.
This utility would allow older (no longer actively supported?) applications what were design for VGA and control (only!) thru the D-pad, to still work.
Of course, new applications will be written to fully use WVGA, and have control thru means other than the D-pad.

hail to this simple, yet working solution.
and even include gestueres perhaps like windows and resco keyboard has.
why is it that we dont have this yet than??
sorry for my bad english
Hey, there's even worse than our good old Touch HD !
I recently tried a Touch HD 2 a friend wanted to show me (actually the guy who sold me his Touch HD ! ) and now there's an even biggest problem with HTC Sense (or maybe just Windows mobile 6.5) and the capacitive multitouch screen !
The good old scroll bars on the sides of the windows have been replaced by a thin line popping a slider when you press on it...
But, now it's all but precise !
As your finger now touches an entire area at the same time, it becomes almost impossible to scroll precisely to a desired position in a long list or directory (just try to go where you want in the Windows directory, and you'll go quickly mad) !!!
Maybe it would be better with a stylus, but there's no stylus provided with the Touch HD 2...
Or maybe it would be better using the arrows keys... The ones that should be on the pad if it was there...
Now you know why I told you that story !

TouchFlo & Manila2d and screen going white questions

Hi All,
First of all BRILLIANT website ... keep the good work up guys ... please bear with me with a few question that i have no idea about. Thought i'd put this all in one thread rather than 4 different ones:
1) Does it actually matter which cab file (i don't know what you call it ExtRom? please let me know what exactly you call it so it's easier for me to search for in the future) to use with which version of OS? Currently i'm on WM6.5 Build 23004 WWE R7.1 and i think i downloaded some can file from WM6.1 or something
2) Where can i find TouchFlo for WM6.5 Build 23004 WWE R7.1?
3) I installed the HTC Manila2d on my XDA iis but can not seem to find it any where, do i need to install something else besides this to be able to view the application
4) Most of the time when the backlight goes off on my XDA IIs, i press the power button to bring the screen back up only to find that the screen has gone white and then i have to reset my XDA a couple of times ... to get it working i have to make sure that i'm constantly working on some app for a good few minutes before i leave the screen light to go off
Would appreciate if you can help me with this. Many thanks in advance.
1. yes it most certainly does. if you had upgraded to wm6.1 and tried an extrom of wm6.5 you would probably be disappointed that some of the programs like internet explorer, office or wm6.5 specific stuff wouldn't work. the extrom is a bunch of cabs to install certain programs after a hard reset. that's why you should have a look inside the extrom and maybe google some of the cab names and decide, whether you relly need them or not. for example, if you never use java, mss, or pdf documents, leave jbed, arcsoft and adobe reader out of the extrom and save a lot of space on your device. in general, the rom chef gives a link to the extrom, fitting the rom best, but i think the last official extrom, released by a chef was with xplode's 21202. that is the one you want to take for the newest internet explorer and office and other useful stuff.
2. what? touchflo in general means... nothing. there are 3 aspects of touchflo: touchflo3d (=Manila2d), touchflo cube and sometimes touchflo is also referred to, when it comes to finger friendlyness and touch scrolling.
to be short, the touch scrolling is always on in wm6.5 and it is also quite finger friendly. about the rest... forget it.
3. you know, manila 2d is sooo 2008
manila2d is, as you might know, opticly comparable to an animated version of htc home with a bunch of extra features, and also, like htc home (or the above mentioned touchflo cube) it is improving the today screen of wm6 and wm6.1 devices. it might also work on wm6.5, but for that to be even remotely possible, you have to lose the titanium home (default today screen plugin of wm6.5, with the sliding and all...) so go to start->settings->today->items and unselect windows default and then manila might work for you, which still begs the question:
why would you want manila when you can have titanium?
manila is slow & outdated (if you ever even get it to work, most versions won't do on the BA), while titanium is new, modern, highly customizable, hip, trendy and most important of all, works extremely fast on the BA.
4. ok, assuming that you already checked the backlight and power settings, that leaves a few other things to check:
- does it also do the white screen, if you press the power button in the first place, to switch it off and then turn back on?
- did you do anything in the upgrade process differing from "the book"?
- did you try a hard reset? if you just upgraded, you have nothing to lose?
even more stuff would come to mind, but first post back if any of the things are done so far.

Hi Chef Tony, mate honestly i really do appreciate taking your time and explaining this what was once all french to me. Ok i totally get the idea of ExtRoms and Cab file. So assuming that if i use one of the 6.1 cab files on a 6.5 it should work correct?
Apparently i downloaded Manila2D from this forum, installed it but that didn't work ... i went to start->settings->today->items and unselect windows default and but it comes up as blank screen (home screen) and also i could see TouchFlo as an option and when i select that it takes me back to the home screen saying "Tap here to activate TouchFlo", no matter how many times i tap, nothing happens. So correct me when i say this, this TouchFlo which was showing up on the options is actually a Manila2D app right? I saw a video last night on youtube which said TouchFlo on XDAiis (sorry but can't find the exact link to it) and it looked something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJFBifvgSgA i mean the interface and the screen tapping.
As far as the screen is concerned, it never used to do this but since i've upgraded to 6.5 it has started to. I followed the exact same process what the book said because i'm the sort of a person who follows the book and nothing besides that ... besides i've hard rest it as well but that still did not help. Ok here's what happens (i think), when the device is battery powered, it will white screen when the device is not used for a few minutes (sleep mode or whatever you may call it) but it does not happen when it's on external power because it's always on any way.
in general an extrom from wm6.1 would work on wm6.5 flawlessly. but as mentioned before, the versions of the internet explorer and office changed dramatically. you should include the newer cabs there.
this tap here to activate touchflo is exactly the manila, and normally it should start up then, but as mentioned before, there is no guarantee, every version would work with the BA, but i had a version once, that worked in general, it was just a little slow and some features wouldn't work, which is perfectly normal. you should have a look at this thread and maybe try the versions given there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340932&highlight=iolite
also you'll find other neat stuff there.
if you really want manila as your GUI, maybe you should try a nice wm6 or wm6.1 rom, because manila is really sucking cpu and ram, and with most wm6.5 roms those resources are optimized for titanium and even with titanium switched off, they just consume more hardware than wm6.1 for instance. it will run better then.
but your last sentence there is confusing me. what exactly do you mean, when you say white screen? is it actually showing all white, with backlight, or is it more like the display is off, a pale grey without backlight? if it is the first option, it seems there is actually a tiny problem there, could be together with manila, back in the day, when i ran it, i experienced sort of a third boot splash screen with manila installed and the device would take forever to boot up, soft resets were a major buzzkill then.
if it is the 2nd option, then it is perfectly normal and you can go to start->settings->system->power and set the device to never switch off on battery power, but instead just switch off the backlight.
last but not least (ok, i should have written this above): the video you posted!
the first 48 seconds don't show any manila stuff, that is called s2u2, slide 2 unlock a keylock app, you can download for free, from another forum member here, called A_C, on his site here: http://s2u2.ac-s2.com/ (all credit to A_C)
i wouldn't exactly count on the photo and video function to work on a BA either, as shown about 1:20
at 1:50 the youtube app is not part of manila either, but you can download something like that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385227 or the official one here: http://help.youtube.com/support/youtube/bin/topic.py?hl=en&topic=20991
i really wonder what the last app was, he showed, since i don't have sound at the moment, i can't tell whether he mentions it maybe, but probably doesn't matter anyway, because you are not looking for a paint clone, but for a nice GUI
hope this could bring you a little bit further in getting your device customized. let me know, whether everything worked out as planned.
Chef_Tony
Hi Chef Tony,
Trying Titanium on Xplode's v7.1 but cannot get my normal Today plugins selected - Pocket Breeze, Device lock, Comms, and a Programme Bar.
Is there an easy way to do this? (In M2D customisation you can set the Today page plugins...)
Thanks.
the titanium blocks everything else.
when you go to start->settings->today->items you see, by default, there is a list of a lot of plugins, but the only one that is checked is the titanium home, there called "Windows Default" for instance date and time is unchecked, which does not mean, you don't see the time in your today screen as a clock is also part of titanium. if you decide to work with m2d or other normal today plugins, you need to uncheck Windows default and then you will have access to the old today screen with the static, yet small, list of items. and then you have the opportunity to use all your today plugins. if you want to use titanium home and have plugins for that look for "titanium plugins" or "chome plugins".
and the plugins of titanium can be monitored, sorted and (de-)activated in "titanizer"
all those things in " " can be found in the forum, just have a look in development & hacking section or use the forum search
