O2 XDA EXEC UNLOCKING - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Now here's a strange thing! I have recently downloaded and upgraded my O2 XDA's firmware with the latest version from O2, filename Xda_Exec_Upgrade_v1.30.162 (this was released circa mid-April 2006).
Whilst I was having a search both on this and other forums for unlocking software for the same model, I came across a link back to O2. Imagine my suprise when I found that the file was no longer available and had been replaced with a previous release!!!!
Well, the phone has been fairly reliable, needing perhaps just one reboot or less per day and it has been having very extensive use. I wondered why O2 would pull this release? Then I thought, hang-on, found a T-Mobile SIM and installed it.
Guess what??!!! (you've guessed, you've spoilt my news....)
The phone is unlocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I don't know of course was whether the XDA Exec phone was unlocked to start with, but certainly my previous XDA IIi WAS locked by O2.
Can anyone else confirm on their non-upgraded or upgraded device please?
Regards
David

As I understand it the o2 Execs sold in the UK are not locked. The T-Mobile and Orange variants ARE locked (worse luck - I have the T-Mo MDA Pro).
Yours will never have been locked.
Cheers,
Phil

What Unlock Code?
mmm, I think I'll sit down and have a nice mug of Ovaltine.
Yep, quite correct, it appears that o2 XDA Execs are supplied unlocked. Also the latest firmware IS still available, but there is an old link which only points to the older firmware.
Here's the new stuff:-

Blackberry and Qtek 9090

Hi All
I've been looking at getting a Qtek 9090 for a while now and I have seen lots of postings talking about the t-mobile mda iii supporting blackberry etc and maybe the odd posting where someone in the UK has got a xda2s or 9090 to do it using a particular rom.
Can anyone say that they have witnessed a 9090 with ANY rom on it that supports blackberry in the UK with Vodafone?
I'm really keen to get this going as it should be my ultimate device!
Thanks
Will.
Blackberry support has to be implemented at the provider end, as well as with the client software. Does Vodafone have Blackberrys?
Chris
Vodafone UK supports both Blackberry Internet Service (formerly Blackberry Web Client) and Blackberry Entreprise Server.
For BIS pricing Check Vodafone Blackberry Price Plan
As for the Blue Angel software, T-Mobile's Germany ROM supports the Blackberry Connect. Confirmation can be found here.
For a list of supported devices check Blackberry Connect. Scroll down to the paragraph that says Available Operating Systems and Devices.
Hope this helps.
I'm using Blackberry from T-Mobile UK. Using the ROM supplied by T-Mo UK Customer Services. It only works with their radio ROM, which means no radio upgrades possible. Push emails are great, but this version doesn't seem to be able to handle attachments (larger than a few kb).
Ok, thats all fine - we already have a vodafone BES server etc using standard blackberry handhelds and also nokia 6810 mobiles.
The real question though is - although t-mobile have got the MDA iii working with blackberry abroad (and with their radio rom) - is it possible to install their radio/roms etc onto the 9090 successfully?
I need to get the device (whatever I get) sim-free, and I am having trouble finding an mda iii sim-free in the uk...
Thanks
Will.
The T-Mobile ROM is available on this site:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Upgrades
The BlueAngel is available SIM free from eXpansys.com and I got mine considerably cheaper from justtelecoms.com and it comes with the BB ROM already installed.
JT also do it on 1 year and 2 year contracts
Ok, thanks for that.
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=QTEK_9090 is what I've been looking at getting
Can I presume that it is perfectly possible to install the t-mobile roms onto a qtek 9090 and then unlock to any network (as I'd need to use my voda sim)
Thanks
Will.
I beleive the Q9090 from expansys is already unlocked and yes, you can install any rom.
The JustTelecomms option comes with the correct rom already installed and they will sell it sim free for £330 and unlock it for only £15 or you can use the free unlock tool available here on xda-developers.
Can we all assume it will work? Yes.
Can we guarantee it will work? No.
I have bought the XDA IIs on this assumption. Due to lack of time the device is still in its box.
In the meantime I am still using my Blackberry 7230 but soon I will get my hands dirty and start playing with the XDA. If you're willing to wait a week or two then I'll let you know of the results.
I called justmobile and they don't take credit cards!!
Any other suggestions?

Anything on unlocking exec?? PLEASE? WE'RE DYING! :)

Who has MDA-Pro can apparently ask T-mobile to unlock the phone for free / for 25 Pounds.
I-mate - unlock Jasjars.
as for Orange no idea yet.
And O2 - Can't / Wont / Dont wanna.
any one knows who can unlock execs? even a shop that actullay takes money!!
search

and try searching in the forum for the device it's called universal and it's upgrading it forum had many posts about the subject
Hi,
I am not sure how useful this will be to you, but my XDA Exec was already unlocked when I bought it (Direct from O2).
Mine was purchased in the UK, I don't know if it will be the same for those bought elsewhere?
Are you sure that yours is actually locked to O2? It might be the case that it is not locked at all. Have you tried inserting a sim from another network to see what happens?
Best of Luck.

Ditto
My O2 XDA Exec also is unlocked from the factory, tested with Orange & Vodafone SIM Cards successfully

Question regarding O2 Exec (please help)

I am interesting to buy an O2 Exec from Ebay UK.Some of the devices are listed with O2 simlock and some others are listed as unlocked.I'm located in athens,Greece so the phone will be working under greek mobile carriers.I would like to know if i will buy a phone with O2 simlock if i will be able to unlock it(easy and free) and use my greek carrier's sim.
Sorry for my poor english
Kind regards from Athens
I can't fully answer your question, but I received my XDA Exec last Friday from O2 and it came already unlocked (I'm using an Orange SIM in it).
Can anyone else confirm theirs came unlocked?
I believe O2 charge around £20 to unlock their devices.
But will i be able to unlock the phone from Greece?
Sorry, I don't know, you'd have to ask O2.
But what I was trying to say is I don't think ANY XDA Exec comes locked and was hoping a few more people might be able to confirm.
That's what i also knew but then i saw this in ebay and now im confused. I need to be 100% sure that the phone must be unlocked or easily(and free if possible) unlocked.
Thanks for answering anyway.
I haven't heard of an XDA Exec that is locked yet to be honest. Also, i'd be a bit wary of buying off E-Bay. If the seller decides to change carriers you could theoretically be left with a dead phone if the contract isn't paid up.
The offers on there are tempting but I phoned 02 to get mine and they've given me 800 free minutes a month on a 12 month contract. I realise in Greece this is of no use to you but I mentioned it just in case and UK residents are looking at them.

I bought an orbit on Tuesday, and I'm using my Orange Sim in it until my number gets ported, so my handset is unlocked.

I have an orbit from an o2 shop. I also have my Orange sim in it untill my number gets ported. Therefore - I'd say they're unlocked!
My experience is that all O2 phones have been network-unlocked. Certainly the last 6 I have had were.

I would like to differ.. The XDA2i I had was locked to O2. I bought a XDA Exec in July. That is unlocked out of the box.. Seeing the discussion on the thread, it seems that O2 have adapted a strategy of leaving their phones unlocked for some reason..
Mine was open on all networks as I am using my T-mobile sim in it!
Playing around with a spare Virgin Mobile simcard with O2 sourced phones:
Orbit unlocked
XDA2i locked
Exec unlocked
Mini S unlocked
iPaq 6915 unlocked
Nokia 6280 unlocked
Motorola Razr unlocked
Well I've put a Virgin SIM in mine straight out of the box from O2 and it works so it's definitely unlocked. The only problem is that it says T-Mobile on the screen for network - odd!
^^They all do that sir
IME unless the phone is Virgin branded it will display T-Mobile (who Virgin lease their virtual network from).

O2 Orbit recommended for US T-Mobile user?

Question for O2 Orbit users, would you recommend buying one (from ebay) for usage on T-Mobile USA's EDGE network? I am currently using a BA with WM6 but really want a phone with builtin GPS and the Tytn II is really too expensive especially as the 3G wont work on T-Mobile.
How has the hardware stood up over time? My BA is almost 3 years old and has a few knocks but still work ok. Thanks for any answers.
As far as i know, O2 phones are open and can work on any network! I have the O2 Graphite .. i ran it on my T-Mobile chip and now i got my THREE chip in it. Sure O2 Orbit will work on the T-Mobile network and you get Wi-Fi as well that T-Mobile stole from us !!
Hi,
My O2 XDA Orbit is NOT open to all networks. This is quite unlike O2 whose handsets are usually unlocked.
I've had mine since August of this year and have never had any problem with it. It came pre-installed with WM6 from the factory.
I've got all sorts of memory-intensive programs installed on it, yet it has never let me down (touch wood!). I'm very happy with it.

hey, i've got the T-Mobile MDACIII, had it for a year now, and never had any problems! still using original ROM and all holding up ok! never had to do a hard reset either
