AARGH!!!! Hard reset problem - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Hi
I have just had a really bad thing happen to my XDAIIs
I disconnected it from the USB Power/Sync cable and it did a hard reset!!!
So Now I have to re-install all my apps etc, which are currently 3000 miles away in UK (I am in USA this week).
Apart from the obvious inconvenience of spending an hour or so getting everything setup as I want it again, wht caused this to happen.
On a side note, what's the "best"backup software to use to help mediate against this happening again.
Cheers

Ouch nasty :-(
I keep hard resetting mine by accidently pushing power button as I push stylus in (just the way I hold it). :-(
I'm using Sprite Backup:
http://www.spritesoftware.com/home.html
Sorry again to hear about this :-(

thanks for the advice - I'll look at sprite
I have not managed to do a hard reset by pushing the power button, how do you manage to do that?

Well when I do a reset, I hold the device with my left hand and the thumb on the left hand side and my fingers on the right/top right.
But then as I go to push the stylus in the hole I always have to tilt it up to find the hole (strangely the microphone won't reset it) and in doing so I automatically move my index finger to the top to stop me pushing the device straight out my hand with the stylus and it always rests on the power button.
As I push the stylus the entire device moves and a little... and voila.
It's obviously just me as never heard anyone else having this "problem", but must say I find it a bit annoying and always have to try and remember to move my finger first!
Hope that made sense?

I think I figured out what you're doing, but I can not get my BA to hard reset when doing this, it just powers off

It should do!
If you're pushing power button WHILST pushing the reset hole/button with the stylus that should perform a hard reset (as that's the only way it's supposed to do it - apart from removing battery for 20+ mins!)

Ahh - I now understand what you're doing to hard reset; I had misunderstood before.
I rarely need to soft reset now that I've removed O2 actived & connections.exe (thanks to this forum)

Happened to me
The other day, I was to be on the phone for about an hour (Siemens SX66) and decided to plug the car charger in to save my battery for the day. Got in the car, plugged in the cable to the phone but did not have the other end in the 12volt outlet. At first when I looked at the phone, it appeared to do a soft reset, then I realized it was a hard reset. No explanation on what happened. My fingers were no where near the power button and I did not push the reset button under the phone. Thankfully I just did a backup via activesync, so I went back into the house and restored. Took over an hour, but my phone was back to where it was from 2 hours ago. Only 2 apps I could think of that would cause this is Spb Pocket Plus OR Phone Alarm. My newest additions to the phone.

At least I'm not the only one who has experienced this type of problem - it might be some sort of "spike" when connecting/disconnecting from the external power connector because my problem occurs just as I disconnected from my USB power/sync lead (not the cradle, just a flying lead)
I've now bought a copy of Sprite and am backing up my XDA on a daily basis. Only takes a few minutes. I'm going to hard reset at the weekend & try to restore a backup.

I too have experianced a hard reset many many times. On saturday evening the battery was full. Sunday morning, it was dead, plugged in the charger and it reset. Sometime i have caught it early, for some reason somthing seems to make the battery drain very fast like 100% to 20% in minutes, and not even in use, but powered off.
Another problem is the backup battery is naff, if i remove the main battery, even for a split second, it resets. Apparantly a common fault, and summat to do with the rear switch not making good contact.

You could be on to something here. I remember that my XDA was plugged in to my laptop via a USB2.0 port on a PCMCIA card. I have since found out that this port DOES NOT provide sufficient power to charge the battery (I can see it discharging) , so I must ensure that I use the USB1.1 port on my laptop's motherboard which I know can charge up the XDA. My settings are to leave the PDA switched on when connected via external power and so it could have easily drained the battery overnight and when I removed it in the morning *POOF*

Smashed Dash - Won't Power on - Help! Need Data Recovery!

So my phone fell out of my car in my driveway and apparently I ran it over when I backed out, now it won't power on and the screen is broken.
I've replaced the device, but I'd really really like to get the data off my old phone. The battery is still good, as I've put it in my new phone and it works fine. When I plug in the run over phone, the LED for charging doesn't come on, and when I press the power button, it doesn't turn on.
When I got home and realized that I ran over the phone, the home screen was still a little visible on the cracked screen, and frozen, so like an idiot, I yanked the battery in hopes that it would still power on, but it won't.
If I could just get it to power on and plug into my computer so I can get my data off it.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
So Activesync doesn't kick on when you connect the phone to the computer?
If no sign of life is visible, and your data is absolutely crucial, then the only thing to try would be to buy a phone that you can take apart, and replace if with the guts of your phone. As long as the main board was not damaged, the memory should still be intact. Try eBay or Craigslist for a phone someone is selling for parts (like one with a broken screen or something, but which still makes and receives calls).
Good luck.
Most likely you will not be able to do that anything man sorry...

Power Button only works if dash is plugged into charger.. Otherwise phone is perfect

Weird, huh? I thought this was an interesting issue and that maybe some of you more experienced pda tweakers with some electronics background might have an idea what's going on.
I recently got a "backup" Excalibur on ebay from a girl who said it was "broken". Nonetheless, I figured it was a good deal for parts considering I won it for only $10.50.
When the phone arrived I was surprised to see it looked to be in fairly pristine condition all around (better cosmetically than my own anyway). So I popped in a freshly charged battery and pushed the power button. Nothing. I pushed and prodded for different lengths of time for a while and it actually did manage to power up one time to my surprise (the battery power did show as being fully charged). Thinking this was odd I turned it off again and tried to repeat it again with no luck. After a while I gave up and decided to try with the charging cable attached.
Viola! Started right up no problems. After unplugging from the charger the phone worked flawlessly and it holds a charge just as long as my main phone (I usually have about half to 2/3rds charge left on my OEM battery at the end of the day). The phone charges with no problems as well.
Anyway, I've gone ahead and wiped out the T-Mobile ROM and installed the HTC English-Spanish 6.0 ROM just like my other phone (love this ROM - it's a later build and slimmed down compared to the last T-Mobile .8 Rom plus it's faster, supports HCSD, Voice tags, advanced JOGGR etc.. ) and it works beautifully with this strange exception.... I always need to plug it in if I need to turn it on after a complete shutdown. If the device "soft-resets" via a program such as spb backup it will start up fine without needing to plug it in, however if for whatever reason you power it off via Quick list or long press of the power button, you will need to plug it in to get it to restart. I've had it for about a week and it's a real gem and workhorse aside from that one issue.
Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause of this? I can't complain since I bought the phone for just $10.51 (with free shipping! but it's driving me nuts just thinking about what could be the cause. I've scoured the web looking for similar cases but I haven't found anything similar to this.
Is it possible that the phone is supposed to hold a "power up reserve charge" in a capacitor/diode to give it the "umph" to turn on and maybe my diode is bad or damaged? <--- please keep in mind that that sentence came from a guy who knows nothing about electronics but remembers his dad telling him not to touch that broken TV set on his work bench because "it holds a mean charge even though it's been unplugged for a couple hours"... so be kind
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys
Interesting development...
I've managed a workaround for the problem so I can do a cold start.
1. Remove the Battery
2. Hold in the power button
3. Snap in the battery while holding the power button
4. Release the power button 2 seconds after the battery is popped in.
Works every time.
Still, I'd love to hear some advice from someone who's a bit more electrically inclined.
Now onto my new problem...........
I've suddenly lost the ability to active sync on this phone and it all started right after I entered the network SIM UNLOCK CODE.
I've done several total resets and even put in old spb backups and a backup from my other Dash running the same rom which activesyncs with no issues. I've uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync. Still, this phone no longer connects, while the other does. The one variable I have is that the issue began right after I got my unlock code and SIM unolocked the phone.
I'm fearing that the issue is this...
My other phone was network unlocked while running the T-Mobile stock ROM. I then upgraded to the HTC ROM later with no negative affects. THIS phone was network unlocked AFTER I'd run the HTCunlock program to install the HTC branded Spanish-English 6.0 ROM. I'm wondering if the process of network unlocking doesn't play nice with a ROM designed for a different device ID?
Anyone have any clues what could be going on and whether there's anything I can do to get Activesync back to working on this dash? I really enjoyed using this phone to test out new ROMS and apps before putting them on my everyday phone.
Thanks

FS Pocket Loox N520

Hello. I have a very big problem. My Pocket PC, a Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox N520 has been bricked. It occured this way:
I purchased a new battery (quality one, for FS). I started it, it went fine, I connected it to my PC and borh linux and windows had seen it as device. Then, after a few hours I wanted to hard reset it. Tried 10 times, no succes and now, when I try to start it it get's stuck at the image with the climbing people, no booting, no usb recharging. I really don't know what to do and I need your help/advice.
I tried the following. Hard reset, soft reset, battery replace/removal, linux won\t see it with lsusb command, tried to reburn rom but it's not found as device.
Thank You!

These Looxes (I have N560 with extended battery) sometimes get stuck if the battery voltage is too low, i.e they are nearly out of juice. If you have the original battery, have you tried running it from that? Whichever battery you use, make sure it is fully charged. It could be that the new battery had not had a full first charge? It may even appear to be charging but has not fully held its charge and has been running down. I have had bad experiences with Cameron-Sino batteries, which appear to be working but in fact are not holding their charge.
I am clutching at straws but it is worth a try? These are pretty rugged devices. I would not give up hope yet.
Exactly Sir! The battery was not fully charged when the problem occured. I will try what you said and post the feedback. I also hope is not dead, yet.
Thank you and if you have other suggestions I would be glad to hear them.

No other suggestions. You should charge it on the cradle though and not be tempted to try to turn it on at all until it has had a few hours of juice/charging. It should not make any difference but to be sure use the cradle and not a USB socket in the lead. The mains charger has a greater output capacity than USB supplies and it is likely to give a better charge rate. Be warned, the N520 may not show any signs of life at all while you are doing this long charge. I would leave it over night and try again to hard reset it, or indeed even use it, next morning. Most new batteries, even LiIon ones, need a longer fist charge and it is not recommended that you use them until they have received their first over-long charge.
I tried a full recharge on my pda, over night but no success. Still, when I power it on, it doesn-t boot. I don.t know what else to do.
I think i should rewrite the ROM. Can anyone help me with that?
Please...
Ummmm it does sound like you may have a hardware problem?
The following site has in the download section the Fujitsu Seimens ROM burning program.
http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...snum=1&ct=result&prev=/search?q=newplow&hl=en
Someone could point you to the ROM image for your N520? Newplow's site has software which can switch devices in the FSC range but I cannot remember if the 520 is catered for?
I wonder if it is stuck on the climbers boot screen whether the burning progrram will work either, as you have to use a PC which can communicate via USB with the device, even if only as a "guest"?
Have you also tried ensuring the device is completely powered down by removing the fully charged battery for say an hour then re-inserting and trying again to start? Are you sure the battery is fully charged - have you measured the voltages on the battery pins with a voltmeter?
Ok. I can't even burn the ROM, the device is not recognized on both linux or windows. Nothing. Anyone knows if its possible to repair it or it is forever briked and I can throw it away? Or maybe keep the parts? GPS receiver ?
Please respond. Thanks!
Just had the same problem today. I was flashing my N500 from WM6 to WM5 and the god damn setup crashed. Now I can only see the climbers and thats it. No hard reset or boot screen combinations work
Something spooky going on here!????? Two crashed Looxes...
I repeat, if all hard and soft resets have failed, the only remaining test is to completely remove the battery and any power source for a long period of time, just in case some residual charge lingers in the electronics/chips. I would suggest several hours, perhaps overnight. Then care fully re-insert the battery and try again. If this fails, I am afraid your device is well and truly bricked.
The only other little trick is to look for the proper operation of the little switch which resets the device when you slide the cover back on. On the Looxes this is operating by a small pip on the back cover. You should try the device with the battery firmly pushed in and the cover off. Then try delicately (it is very tiny and delicate) to operate the switch. Look at the screen while you operate it? It is a simple spring loaded micro switch. It should have a similar effect as a soft reset, taking you back to the climbers screen. Worth a try. I have had problems with it putting the device into a odd "stuck" state from which there seemed to be no way out with normal soft or hard resets.
There must be an engineer somewhere who might attempt a repair????? I was an electronics engineer some years ago, but have long since hung up my soldering iron, otherwise I would offer!

Galaxy Nexus Power Button / USB Connection Problem

Hi there,
I apologize if there is already another thread for this kind of issue but I really have no idea where else to post this. I am a complete newbie when it comes to phones but would like to know if there is anyway to help me solve my problem:
My phone is a galaxy nexus with I believe 4.2.2 JB. I've always had problems with my phone randomly resetting/crashing and wasn't able to find any solution to this problem. However, today when I was out shoveling snow on my driveway, I realized my phone was a little wet as I forgot to zip up my pocket and so my phone reset (remained on the Google) screen and would not boot up (It happens quite frequently that I thought it was just like any other reset). So I was a little impatient and took out the battery. When I tried to turn the phone back on, the power button was completely unresponsive. I thought I'd give it a second, take out the battery and sim card and reboot it but to my surprise nothing happened. I ended up looking through the forums for some solution to my problem but I don't know where to begin and what to do.
I have tried the method of plugging in the USB cable into the phone (without battery) and putting it back in. The phone is still unresponsive and to add insult to injury when the phone is plugged in the USB cable to the PC, the PC does not recognize the phone and keeps beeping (the kind that lets you know its disconnected or just cannot read the device). Right now the phone is in a bag with rice just to make sure that the phone had not suffer any water damage, but even when it was in my pocket it wasn't extremely wet..
I believe it may be the device but am not sure what actions I can do on my behalf to solve the problem. Is my phone completely gone or is it still able to be saved? Would I need to bring it into a specalist to see if they can help me out or can I do this myself? Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read!
Cheers!
Edit:
Also just received an OMAP4440 while phone was plugged in... Does that mean my phone is done?
Any help?

The same consequences, came to my gnex, when I cleaned it, with too much liquid... Now the most unprotected parts from water of the phone are the usb port, of course, and the power and volume button. To solve, you have to open the phone (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+Nexus+Teardown/7182) and clean the contacts of the power button, for the usb port, you have to replace all the part for a few $ on ebay... (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Gal...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item2c66d9064b)
Use at you own risk:
A friend of mine was kayaking and had his Samsung galaxy s3 dunked in the water for a while. it was totally wet and the screen wouldn't run on at all.
He baked t in the oven at 200 F for a couple of hours and things went back to nornal. he also stated that he has done that before and it worked every time.
Think of this as a last resort if you are unable to change the usb ribbon as stated above. Also make sure you google this solution extensively to get the right temp and the right amount.
Good luck.

How do I simulate a battery pull when a hard reset won't even work?

ok, so what happened was, my gtabs8.4 suddenly blinked out looking like the GPU failed. I tried holding the volume down + power for a good minute and nothing, many times. what finally worked was letting the thing sit and get dusty for a couple weeka while the battery fully drained. so, since it's a sealed device, how do I simulate a battery pull without actually pulling the thing open to do a real battery pull?
You can open it, it isn't sealed. This might help you get it open:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Galaxy+Tab+S+10.5+Battery+Replacement/50302
what I meant is, it's more sealed than a device designed to be opened by an end user. I don't actually own the proper tools, and don't always carry a screwdriver either. if nothing else, I'll just have to buy a kit.
I can probably say with confidence that I have bricked this device many many more times than yourself and have had to hard reset countless times.
Only once has it ever failed to reset when it dropped into sdcard mode.
Many people use the wrong key combo, up instead of down or wrong sequence. I'm not saying you didn't use the right combo.
However I would say it's highly likely a one off if you couldn't reset.
Not only that the one time it didn't work for me, it took about a day from full charge to deplete the battery and reset.
Unless it happens again I wouldn't worry about it. A software crash shouldn't lock you out from a hard reset and if it does then the unit is obviously faulty because of hardware.
The only way is physically removing the battery connector otherwise.
